I always get the turkey with Swiss cheese (their default) but you can opt for cheddar as well. In addition to cheese, all their sandwiches come with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, regular or spicy mustard, and a mayo spread. You can customize based on preference! I also add the garlic aioli, which is delicious. The real star of the show is their bread (hence their name) -- it's fresh, warm, and makes such a difference. If you can, definitely eat there instead of taking it to go. Heads up: it's cash only (I believe they take Zelle now too) and they're only open Monday through Friday from 11am to 2pm, which is a bit limiting, but honestly it's worth planning around. Since we moved out of North San Jose a few years ago, we haven't been to California Sourdough. Luckily for us, our primary eye doctor share the same parking lot. While this restaurant is only open for a few hours a day, it gets a ton of business. Why? Because they have the best sourdough sandwiches in town. I forgot about how good this place is. It's not a very big place so you may or may not get a table. The to go orders are nicely wrapped making it easy to eat. The sourdough bread is to die for honestly. So crunchy but yet still moist and doesn't crumb like many other breads. So delicious. It's rare that I have salami but make exceptions here. I also love the turkey and hot pastrami sandwiches too. Drove from the other side of San Jose to try this and I was not disappointed! I saw on Facebook that they recently switched to new owners, but I met the new owners and they were SO SWEET and lovely! I got a #8 Reuben with Thousand Island, Sauerkraut, and Yellow Mustard. The sandwich also came with a pickle on the side. This was SO GOOD. I finished it all in one go, though, since it was so good. Also tried the macaroni salad and potato salad. I really liked them! The dining area does have a water dispenser and plastic cups you can use for getting the water, which I really appreciated since I get thirsty easily while eating.
