California Sourdough is a no-frills, cash-leaning sandwich spot known for one thing above all else--the bread. The sourdough is soft, slightly tangy, and fresh-baked, and it really carries every sandwich. Popular picks like the spicy turkey get a lot of love for being generously stuffed and flavorful. Most reviews praise the quality of the sourdough itself as the standout, often saying it's the reason to come back. The vibe is more grab-and-go than sit-down, and it can get busy during lunch hours. A few downsides people mention are limited hours, occasional wait times, and inconsistent service depending on the day.

I love that this is a local mom and pop operation. It's super busy yet everyone was so nice. It was hard to choose a sandwich so I went with a Reuben. I plan on trying some of the other sandwiches there in future visits.

Used to be good until new management took over. $15 for all bread and less than 2oz of meat.

This sandwich slaps!! I went right before closing and there was no line. The menu was easy to understand and relatively simple. They give you the choice of regular mustard or spicy mustard and a pickle as well! I ordered the #6 which was roast beef and turkey and it was so freaking good! I devoured half of the sandwich in the parking lot! The place was kind of hard to find. It was kind of facing the street but there were signs to guide you. Price was ~$15 per sandwich which is not too bad since the sandwich was HUGE. I highly recommend this spot for a grab and go lunch!

We haven't been to CA Sourdough in a number of years. We noticed right away they were under new ownership. We couldn't help but compare what we remember then to what it is now with the way the Sourdough bread tasted. The original Sourdough bread was a lot more light and flavorful. This new Sourdough is much more bready and not as flavorful. We ordered a Hot Pastrami and Hot Reuben sandwich and although it was large in size, it was a lot of lettuce filler and disappointingly not very much meat. The sandwich overall was good, not great like before. My belief is that the Original Owners sold the business but not their Sourdough bread recipe. There's seating inside and seating outside. A very small establishment but a pretty well oiled machine.

Cozy deli with yummy sourdough sandwiches, seating options, and quick service! The sourdough (you can get it toasted) has a nice and crackly texture. They offer pretty flavorful meats and sauces, give hearty portion sizes, and are pretty customizable to your preferences. I ordered the spicy turkey and the meat had light pepperiness but wasn't too spicy. It paired quite well with the spicy mustard for an extra boost of flavor. It also comes with a pickle spear on the side by default for some extra acidity and flavor. Overall really solid sandwich perfect for a quick bite. They have dine in seating but I did takeout and the sandwich held up pretty well

Turkey with Garlic Aioli ($15, 4/5 stars)

I appreciate their freshly baked, crunchy bread and garlic aioli! Their hours are very limited so it's hard to grab food here. While I enjoyed my sandwich, the sourdough doesn't quite live up for me personally. I felt this way having been years before. The bread isn't really sour like sourdough and honestly reminds me of a Vietnamese baguette. RECS: + #2 Turkey ($15, 4/5 stars) WITH garlic aioli! The garlic aioli elevates the taste so much further. I love that they use Boar's Head deli meats

I went on a weekday right upon opening and there was already a line out the door! It was semi tricky for me to find, it's on the first level around the side of the building. Although a long line, it moved semi fast and it was a short wait after ordering. Employees were super sweet. There is an option to have them warmed up which I did after the fact that I paid. I got the turkey and pastrami and the tuna sandwich. Each sandwich is $15 and they are hefty!!!! The rolls are freshly baked, you can see them grabbing them out of the oven and see them making the sandwich. Each sandwich is half a sourdough roll. There is an option to add brown mustard or yellow mustard. All sandwiches come w mayo lettuce and tomato. My only thing is it was a little too saucy for me. I want to try again with light mayo/mustard. There is seating to eat your sandwich along w a little condiment bar. Also seating while you wait for your sandwich number to be called.

This is by far the best hidden gem in san jose. California sourdough offers high quality ingredients that is perfect for a post workout meal. I truly believe this is the best place for sandwiches in the bay area. Big thanks for auntie May For providing great service with a smile.

The Mortadella sandwich is delicious. The potato salad is a great side choice. Bread is amazing. Staff is nice and the place is a comfortable spot for a lunch break. Tables could be cleaner though.

Is it me or did they skimp on the cuts of deli? I love their bread but if I'm paying $15 I don't want less protein, keep it the same as before. I hope the new owners take notes of this before they start losing customers.

“Thank you for sharing your feedback! We’re glad to hear you love our bread, and we take every comment seriously. We follow standard portions for our meats to ensure consistency, but we’re sorry if it didn’t feel that way during your visit. We’ll… Read more

What is preventing them from opening on weekends?

I heard they are now open on Saturdays.

Question for the new owners, did the bread recipe change? Did the old owners change it when they sold it to you?

Bread changed years ago. The original bread supplier went out of business during COVID.

March 2025- new ownership? Things seem different this last visit!

Yuppp. Original owners sold it and retired. I miss them already.

Can you call in your order? Or is it walk-in only?

Yes. They prefer you call before they open at 11:00 am. The earlier the better. You don't have to wait in line. Proceed to the cashier with your name, pay and they will make your order.

Is this place better than jersey mikes?? In regards to sandwiches

    Yes

Is the sourdough bread dairy free? I know it can be made with either milk or water...

    No!

Did they recently change the bread served? Seems more like a really doughy french bread now.

I thought so too. But less doughy and more crusty. Need to go back to validate. Wasn't sure if it was an one off or indefinite change. Either way, still amazing bread.

Is this the same owner as Freshly Baked Eatery?

Can you offer crispy bacon to any sandwich?

    Yea. For an additional charge.

    Is it still cash only?

    Yes

Are they open on MLK (Jan 20)?

What is their 'special sourdough spread' made out of?

It's actually mayo & either regular or spicy mustard. The spicy mustard (not really spicy) is the Best!

Do they have gluten free options?

    Not that I know of

    Are there non-sourdough bread options?

Yes. They have other options like rye and wheat

The location of the store seems a little far away because it's in the corner by Safeway's gas station off to the side, so I imagine some people miss it. So keep an eye out for it next time you're in the mood for some hot subs. Chris, the owner, was so kind and explained everything to us. He was patient, informative, and professional. It's nice to see owners work at times and treat their customers so genuinely! So thank you, Chris! The store is honestly decorated so well. There's details everywhere on the wall, and it's all dedicated to San Jose culture and first responders. The ambiance felt local and cool. Now for the food, my husband ordered the Build Your Own Sub with Pastrami and it was delicious! I ordered their new and off the menu French Dip sub with aus ju and IT WAS SO GOOD. Highly recommend to get it now while they have it! Special notes: - All subs are served hot! - They have a hot sauce bar with unique sauces all leveled off from (1-10). 1 = mild and 10 = spiciest! Affordability: both of our subs came out to be around $20 for two large subs. Some people may view the prices as pricey, but if you get a large sub it's definitely worth it. Check out the photos for reference (I don't think the photos do the large size justice though because they are HUGE) and give Firehouse Sub a try for yourself!

Smoked Turkey breast, Honey Ham, and melted Monterey Jack cheese, served with lettuce, tomato, onion, no mayo for me, and deli mustard with a pickle spear on the side. The sub were just okay for me, nothing amazing. ~ Firehouse Steak & Cheese (Large) - 3/5 Looks much better in the brochure. It's fine, tasted OK. Nothing to brag about, don't let the sando sit around. Make sure you finish it all at once or it will get soggy... may be its because of the oil and vinegar dressing I opted for? Not sure... The wheat bread is a tad too sweet for my liking and the white bread is just plain and flavorless. I do wish they provided options like Sourdough or Dutch Crunch, which also happen to be healthier for you. I wanted to complain that they were expensive but then realized that's how it is everywhere now. That food inflation is no joke... I'd stop by if nothing was around. Not so sure I need to try other items on the menu.

Heard rave reviews so we had to stop by when in San Jose! Came on a weekday afternoon and boy there was a line but we were determined. It was all worth it! We all got the banh mi dac biet (cold cut) and I split a large with my sister, which was super filling and nicely priced! Firstly I was a big fan of the baguette bread, I like the texture and how it's crunchy. The cold cuts were thickly cut and they were generous with the amount. It was so thick I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to bite it all at once lol. There was also a good amount of veggies (do chua, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeños) and I thought the amount of pate was perfect as well! All in all, super delicious, would recommend and I would definitely go out of my way to come back here if I get the chance!
