Came here after visiting the pet rehab clinic next door, Animals Only. It's a hole in the wall taco place with authentic Mexican food at a shopping plaza. We got the carne asada fries and the quesabirria tacos. The portions are pretty big. The carne asada fries was tasty and filling, and they were very generous with the meat 8/10. The quessabirria was very oily. I had only a bite, and I gave the rest to my boyfriend. He loved it, but it was too greasy for me, so 7/10. They have a salsa bar with self serve chips, kind of salty, but still good - 8/10.

I ordered the same as 4 months ago and they are consistent! Loved my half order carne asada fries. The customer in front of me had challenges ordering. He was asking alot of questions and the lady didn't know a few answers and wasn't very quick to respond. He settled on a basic burrito. The restaurant is clean. Older furniture and flag decor looks a bit worn but the chips and salsa bar is still great!!

Was looking for a close by place that was opened late after an event and came here for some good old Mexican food. We had a group of 20 of us and we were the only ones that were there. It's in the Serra Mesa area and a little hidden. But sometimes these kinda places have the best food, and I gotta admit their food was good. I shared the carne asada fries and it was huge! Very good and filled with meat! Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Just Yelp it!

The best carne asada burrito, hands down!! Now that I live in LA area, I always have to make a stop at Roberto's when I'm in SD!! (Now called Cali's & Fries). Been going here since high school and it's still the best!! Carne asada, rolled tacos, bean and cheese burrito, quesadillas, you name it...

Another little taco shop to check out in San Diego. It's a little hole in the wall in a small strip mall near a few other restaurants and a physical therapy gym. It's just down the hill from Kaiser hospital so I came over on my lunch break. The inside is pretty small and there are a few tables outside. There's a nice salsa bar with chips that are delicious with the perfect sprinkling of salt. I love that it's self serve so you can have any much as you want while you're there. The lady working the cash register was very patient and kind. I like how this taco shop has different burrito types based on countries around the world. It's a cool concept that I don't see at many places. I got the ultimate breakfast burrito because I love a good breakfast burrito. It came with ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, potato, and cheese. There was a little too much ham in my opinion and not enough bacon. The sausage was delicious and the egg was nice and fluffy. It was a hearty burrito that I was able to stretch out to two meals and the next day it kept well because it wasn't too wet and not soggy at all. I think it's hard to have a great burrito because there are so many options in SD so this one definitely didn't make it in my top favorites but I'll probably be back to try another option and definitely for more chips.

San Diego doesn't play when it comes to carne asada fries. Cali's & Fries is a great hole in the wall with a self serve salsa & chip bar as well as a huge menu stacked with tasty options from tacos, burritos, rolled tacos, quesadillas, and of course french fries. Parking lot in front has plenty of parking so it won't hard to find a spot. You order at the cashier, pay, and find a table to wait for your food. Service was friendly and kind. The portion sizes were huge and they really are generous with the meat here. You really get great bang for your buck. Carne asada fries - This is a must share item. The portion is massive so we split two orders between 6 of us and there was still plenty to take home. The fries are crispy and that asada meat is juicy. Carne asada burrito- They really don't skimp on the meat here. The steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. No filler or rice here, just simple meat and salsa. So delicious! Would highly recommend the french fries and burritos here. Go check them out!

10/10, wasn't feeling fast food today and saw they had loaded fries. Got the carnita fries and the cashier was incredibly nice. Very authentic flavors and cozy atmosphere.

Food: Enjoyable and made to order. As a returning customer, Cali & Fries is one of my favourites. Service: Customer service is always good. Ambience: Relax inside while eating. Clean. Always clean up after oneself.

    Veggie Cali burrito

Finally a place that does a veggie cali burrito! And it's so good. My boyfriend also said the California burrito is one of the best he's had, with the right balance of meat and good flavor.

Been coming here since it was called El Roberto, so probably 2004-2005. Solid spot with great carne asada burritos, California burritos, carne asada fries, rolled tacos etc. haven't had anything I didn't like. Also, love the salsa bar and free chips too if you're dining in. Tops off the whole experience.

For a place that specializes in asada fries they were pretty gross. Fries were soggy and the meat was lukewarm. Super salty and $18.

Gordo's adobada can compare favorably to al pastor anywhere; however, my experience at this "Gordo" location in Gaslamp has been inconsistent compared to Chula Vista and Vegas locations, due to their higher volume. The smaller space also has less seating, which is a bummer if you are coming here on a busy comic con day. The adobada here, though, is the taco to get. Consider yourself lucky if you get a nice portion of crispy and burnt bits as they offer nice textural bites. Their sauces/salsas are also equally good, and it sets it above and beyond another taquero from Tijuana, Tacos El Franc. Don't shy away from their asada tacos either, as the meat has a nice kiss of charcoal and it's topped with a generous portion of guac. I don't love that prices have gone up to almost $5/taco; however, I'll gladly pay it if they can give me my favorite taco.

The line can vary depending on what's going on since it's within walking distance of the stadium and convention center, but overall, it felt way more manageable than Vegas, where you can easily wait an hour or more. The food is still an awesome value and tastes amazing as always. The only thing to keep in mind is that the inside is very small. Because of the tight layout, security can be a little pushy about making sure everyone is standing in the right area and waiting in the correct line for their food. I get it since space is tight, but it can feel a bit intimidating if you've never been there before. Luckily, since I'd been to Tacos El Gordo before, I already knew the drill. Overall, amazing tacos and a great spot to hit in SD. I'll definitely be back!

No notes. The Cali Burrito was huge and had a nice bite. The birria is perfectly tender and well cooked so it made all the dishes great. All in all - a nice fast casual spot. That didn't exactly leave us with answers about how their beans are cooked or if they used butter or crema in anything else. there are two self serve ordering kiosks and this place was open late and popping off so staff was busy/too busy to answer questions. it looked like people typically order a LOT of food too. i got one keto taco and a side of beans and my vegan bf got a veggie quesadilla w/o cheese. there is a salsa bar to the side with 5-6 available choices but all of them are marked as spicy. they called my name so i went up to the counter. there wasn't any food on it and the guy was busy talking to someone so i just waited. then he went to the mic and called my name again, saying my order was ready. i was like "hi..that's me!" and then he asked the kitchen for my order. like, what? you called my name twice and my order wasn't even on the window? baby, take a beat. the food looked pretty good! it came out on a tray with pickled onions, sliced red radishes, and a lime wedge. presentation was lovely. the table next to us got these dope looking nachos that immediately gave me fomo. the quesadilla was huge and had a bunch of chopped veggies in it. but of course, without cheese or any binding agent, it all fell apart with the first bite. i was more annoyed with my bf than the restaurant for that, but he said it still tasted good and filling if not difficult and disappointing to eat. mine tasted fine. i've had really great mexican food in sd and i get that birria is a specific vibe, but what kind of place does ONLY birria and then sells the consome separately?

I ordered: * Mahi Mahi Taco: the fish tasted fresh, and I liked the crispy onions on top. There was quite a bit of sauce, which made it pretty messy to eat. While the fish was good, it felt like a very heavy taco overall. * Surf & Turf Taco: this was loaded with steak and topped with two flavorful shrimp. The shrimp had an amazing flavor, and this taco was much more enjoyable and balanced. Overall, the service was great, the prices were very reasonable, and the protein quality was excellent. My only critique is that the tacos felt a little overdone with toppings and sauces when the quality of the protein could easily stand on its own. Still, it's a solid spot for an affordable late-night bite. One thing to note: there are no restrooms available inside the restaurant.

It's no secret that San Diego has tacos in…read morespades and being so close to the border, you'd think that a quest to find the perfect taco would be as simple as rolling down to the nearest taqueria. Except, it's not quite that simple. Many beloved staples have gone downhill, while some newer spots that might boast things like a Michelin mention or multiple locations ranging from TJ to Vegas contain more hype and gristle than tender meat and substance. Enter Chula Tacos. Chula is, and always was, the type of place that makes you forget that you're not actually in Tijuana. While part of me misses their OG Market Street location, seeing them with brick-and-mortars feels hard-earned and well-deserved. This location on Palm in IB is relatively easy to access from the freeway, but parking can be tricky. You can safely assume that it will be busy and you will either have to be very lucky or be willing to find a spot on the street. Out of all the times I've been here, it's always been crowded enough that I've never been able to find a table inside, but I enjoy sitting out on the patio next to the ahumederos. The first thing that hits you walking through the door is how amazing everything smells. The queue to the cashier takes you near a window showing the kitchen where you can see the Chula Tacos team making fresh tortillas, slicing meat from the trompos, grilling up jalapenos, nopales, onions, labio, and tripa. For me, it's not so much a challenge to decide what I want, it's more a challenge to keep myself from ordering everything. My usual is four tacos: two asada, two al pastor (but I've heard that I should also try their world famous keka). The tacos though? Perfection. Every time, the asada is the juiciest and most tender I've ever eaten, the al pastor is succulent and flavorful, and no taco in front of me is long for the world. At $3.50 each, every one of them is absolutely loaded. Three would honestly fill me up, but I always want four. After getting burned by spots that ask around 75% more and deliver anywhere between 25-50% less, Chula Tacos feels like an absolute godsend of a Tijuana-style taqueria and I can't see any other contenders being my go-to. So, when I say "Tacos will fix me," what I mean nowadays is "Chula Tacos will fix me."
