John and Ken couldn't have been more pleasant to deal with. They prove there's nothing like small-town service!

I have lived in St. Mary's County for over 15 years and drive by Tom Hodges car dealership almost…read moreevery day, and until yesterday I had never actually visited. I contacted the dealership with interest in a used Subaru Outback. After speaking to representative, I received a call from the owner, Tom, shortly after. The discussion was friendly and honest. Tom was genuinely interested in making sure I was satisfied with the vehicle. I arranged a meeting the next day to come take a look at the car. Long story short, I ended up purchasing the vehicle with what was easily the best car buying experience I have ever had. Typically, negotiating the price of the car is a strenuous and unenjoyable experience. Working with Becca, Jeremiah, and Tom, we were able to come to a very fair price without the unnecessary back and forth. Not often do you feel that a car dealership is being fair in their pricing, but they were at Tom Hodges. The transaction was quick, the staff extremely helpful from the sales team to the admin folks, and most importantly, the pricing very reasonable. Not only will I be purchasing future vehicles from Tom Hodges, but I will also be getting my Outback serviced there as well. Next time you are in the market for a used car, give them a try. Enjoy a much smoother transaction than most of the other dealerships in the area.

Unfortunately, it took a couple months for a proper diagnosis. The smell continued to get worse and worse, and made the vehicle unsafe and on a drivable for my four children and my wife, I reached out to the owner asking if he would cover the expenses because if I would have test driven that car in person I would've never purchased a car. There was always an excuse. I guess a lesson learned. Even a small town dealership that's been established for a long time. Doesn't have much empathy for an out-of-state purchaser. So $790 later, at least the issue was fixed and my children are saved and not getting exhaust blown into them through the vents while they're in the backseat I guess there was a reason why I was never offered a warranty until many emails later that I kept requesting it((all-time stamped and documented)

I brought my SUV to this shop for repair as it is a local business and I try to support local when…read moreavailable. My mistake. The first visit entailed a month and a half long wait to have an air conditioning problem repaired, only to have the A/C fail the first time I used it (100 degree + day, of course). Back to the shop and after another extended wait, (another month) I finally received a vehicle with a working A/C. Okay, stuff happens. After a breakdown on the road, I gave them another opportunity to fix a second problem with the vehicle, bad move. The car was laid up for over a month this time and there was a complete lack of transparency as to parts availability. One day they had the part, the next day they didn't. Additionally, the part that it took them over a month to get wasn't even the correct part, they had misdiagnosed the problem with the car. Luckily by this time, even I had had enough and the vehicle was towed to another shop where I was informed that the repair that Campbells was going to make would not have solved the problem and, I would have spent $1000.00 and had a vehicle that still wouldn't run. The second tow bill was money well spent and thankfully the second shop, Affordable Auto Repair in Fredericksburg, was able to repair the vehicle in a timely fashion, and offered a parts warranty on the repair. Thankfully, I had a second car to use while the other was needlessly detained at Campbells. Needless to say, I won't be recommending this shop to anyone in the future.

I went to this location after seeing the vehicle I wanted on their website. Upon arrival I was met…read moreby Donna A from sales. She was very personable and quite the salesperson. They appraised my vehicle, and offered me what I thought was a fair price, but I wanted to think about it and promised I would contact her the next day with my answer. I called the next day and told her I would take the vehicle. Donna took all of mine and my wife's info over the phone and said they would have the paperwork ready when we arrived, I made an appointment for 6pm. Unfortunately my wife was running late from work so we didn't get there until 7pm. Problem was by then they were very busy, two sales people and only one finance person working (on a Friday night). By the time we got in the finance office it was almost 9pm, but he was quick and efficient. So we leave the lot and by now its late and we are very tired. When I get up the next day I inspect my newly purchased vehicle and find a lot of dirt I missed the night before. (Did I mention it was raining lightly the night before so I didn't go over the truck with a fine eye to detail?) The interior had dust and dirt between the seats and their was grass and dog hair under the rear seat. I contacted Donna and explained what I found and I was not pleased. She immediately spoke to her manager who offered me a free detail. I refused the offer but asked them to speak with their detail person because a less than agreeable customer may not be as forgiving. I have dealt with this dealership for years for service on several vehicles and have always been pleased. I believe they were just overwhelmed this night and did the best they could to make all of their customers happy. As of this writing I am happy with my purchase and I am hoping their service department continues the high standards that I have gotten used to. Ricky H.

I understand I was a walk-in customer, but it still took 4 business days just to diagnose the vehicle, and the overall repair process lasted nearly two weeks. Communication throughout the process was frustrating. Every update had to be requested by me, and when I called during the second day I was told oil changes were taking priority over diagnostics. When I asked for estimates, I never received a proper written quote -- only blank emails with numbers and little explanation. The dealership eventually found broken/cracked EVAP lines, a leaking purge valve hose, a leaking ESIM, and failed motor mounts. The motor mount repair fixed the knocking issue, which I appreciate. One thing that really bothered me was being charged for an oil change that I neither requested nor was informed about beforehand. While I knew I was getting close to needing one anyway, it should have been communicated and approved clearly before being performed. Situations like that make customers question how often additional services are added without proper discussion. While the repairs appear to have resolved the issues, the customer service experience was disappointing. For having my vehicle for almost two weeks, I expected better communication, proper written estimates, and at minimum a basic wash/vacuum before returning the vehicle. Overall, the repairs seem fine, but the service experience and communication need significant improvement. Update*** noise is still there not quite as pronounced but still there..
