They recently had strawberry soft serve that you could cover in crunchy stuff (like the strawberry shortcake bar you get from an ice cream truck) and it was amazing! The shop is really cute, and Cal's has very good ice cream. Service was average. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because the prices are too high for inconsistent portions. As a first time customer, I was surprised to see a "small" which is supposed to be 2 scoops, but really I got 1 large scoop. At the register, it was clear there was a discrepancy in the size I got. One employee asked another employee if the second flavor was in the cup, and I stood there puzzled... if it isn't obvious then the scoops are too small.. when I got to the car, I had to look under the top scoop to find the "scoop" underneath, which essentially hugged one side of the cup, and was not close to a scoop. We found this place traveling home from vacation. It had more flavors and I've ever seen at any ice cream place before plus it's homemade so it definitely peaked my interest. I didn't know what a lot of the flavors were, but the girl who is working the counter was happy to explain each one to me. I had a cookie dough Oreo ice cream that was absolutely delicious. The small was absolutely gigantic. My wife had a sundae and the hot fudge was as good as her favorite place down the Cape. We will definitely be going back here and trying other flavors. Cal's Creamery, I believe, is a new addition to Reading. I went here about a month ago with my partner and her friend while out seeking some ice cream nearby. It was a nice little find. The ability to sit outside or inside is always appreciated with the seasons changing and it was a nice night on this occasion. The design of Cal's gives it that red barn on a farm aesthetic. The location would be a nice spot aside from the people it seems to attract as I found myself and those with me getting many weird looks from the other customers like we "didn't belong there" almost. I guess if you're not a high schooler or tech bro that is considered weird? Seemed to be the two types we saw there and both groups were rude. Even as we left in the car we got looks which was dismaying at the very least. The ice cream was good. I received a chocolate shake. While the staff were nice, they did take quite a while. There were a few points where I noticed them standing in a circle towards the back as a line piled up outside the window. After ordering it took about 10-15min for us to receive our orders despite people only being served one by one. While the ice cream was decent, the service experience was middling and the crowds that show up there aren't particularly respectful or nice from this experience. It just left a bad taste in our mouths despite feeling positively towards the ice cream. read more

Every single time I am in this store. The teenage workers are pretending to be washing things while the line is out the door. Tonight no exception. 4 people working. One serving a line of 12. THIS IS ALWAYS THE CASE. Teenage friends come in...the friends go behind the counter -helped themselves and their friends. This happened three times with three groups of friends and they all got free ice cream while the rest paying customers wait in line watching these workers only pay attention to their friends. If you are owner: The teenagers you have hired are lazy. They are not working. They are only there to give out your ice cream for free to their friends. Didn't have any of the flavors I really wanted - banana, banana chocolate chip, pb crazy cow, pb oreo, nutella, cow tracks. So I get crazy cow with pb sauce. The ice cream was so full of HUGE chunks of Oreo and brownie, pieces so big you're chewing on them for 5 minutes, it was unpleasant. And not enough pb. Didn't even finish my sundae and certainly not because it was too big. Asked for a 2nd small sundae with strawberry sauce- she says they don't have a strawberry sundae. I point out the sign that says "Sundaes" followed by a list of sauces including strawberry. She says yeah, strawberry topping and I repeat the ice cream flavor with strawberry topping sundae. Wow!! I had a hankering for mint chocolate chip, totally expecting it to come in the shamrock green color it usually comes in. It came completely white, which is a great indication that there were no artificial dyes used in making the ice cream. After tasting, I was SO surprised to actually taste real, delicious mint! I'm not entirely sure how they make it, but it's definitely homemade and they are obviously paying attention to what they're putting into their stuff. You can't necessarily make ice cream healthy, but these two steps have removed a big portion of junk out of the equation. The ice cream is clearly homemade, and it is creamy and delicious. The service was quick, and the prices were reasonable for homemade ice cream. I got a small and I couldn't even finish it, if that gives you any indication on the portion! I had Dracula's Blood which was a cherryish ice cream with maraschino cherries. It was delicious. But Blueberry Crumble and Crazy Cow were overloaded with sugary add ins. Cow had brownies and cookie dough. Crumble just had too much sugar in the crumble. I'll be back to try more traditional flavors, as the quality of the ice cream seems good overall. This is a fairly new place, but the queue tells you a different story. They have a lot of parking space. It was a cold, windy but sunny weekend afternoon, still I waited for 20 minutes to order (yes, queue was long), To be fair, it was on a Saturday. My friend and I came here in hopes of trying their baklava ice cream and were disappointed to find out that they didn't have it. Rather than leaving empty handed, we ordered a kiddie scoop of Nutella chip. It was a good thing we decided to share because even the kiddie scoop was large for us! I've spent the entire summer working on ice cream, so I'm very demanding when it comes to appearance, flavor, and texture. This ice cream, despite having a rather mild Nutella flavor (not that it was an issue), had such a unique, almost addicting texture. It was slightly slimy and pulled; it definitely tasted homemade. Just had the strangest experience with one of the rudest staff members this evening - a young / high school-aged girl with brown hair and blonde highlights wearing a hat and hoop earrings - who did not even take my order and decided to confront me in the most outrageously rude manner. I ordered a vanilla cone with Oreos with a nice professional girl and paid. My husband then left with the wallet to wait in the car while I waited for the ice cream. A third staff member handed me the ice cream cone but without the Oreos. I reminded them ("oh you forgot the Oreos"), no big deal. She had trouble getting them on top and just handed me them on the side in a cup. No biggie. I go to head to through the crowd to the car and the girl with hoop earrings and blonde highlights loudly goes "you need to pay for that." in a very rude and condescending tone. Everyone turns to look. I was confused because we already paid so let her know we had done so. "No you didn't pay for that topping." I, again confused, said that I'd ordered it with Oreos and already paid? "You did not pay for that topping" she insists loudly and sassily with an extremely smug look / smirk and looked me up and down. Everyone is staring at this point as if I just walked out of a Target with a television that I stole, instead of an ice cream shop worker trying to muscle a customer for a 20 cent topping that THEY apparently rang incorrectly. Even if somehow I had actually not ordered the topping initially (which, to be clear, was not the case) why wouldn't it be a neutral topic instead of this weird public accusation and attempt to belittle a customer? It was truly the weirdest experience. I can't imagine a more rude and condescending worker on such a power trip over something so insignificant. Slammed the precious Oreo loot down on the counter and left since I was not going back and forth to the other end of the lot to get the wallet to re-pay for the topping they did not ring in correctly the first time (or were just charging me twice for). If I hadn't already paid for the ice cream itself I would've handed that back to her too. I truly hope this is addressed as someone really needs to talk to this girl. Until then I'm all set. If this is how she handles an ice cream topping transaction then I wish her and her attitude all the best in her future workplace. She's going to need it. read more
