My friend and I stopped by Calypso on a Saturday night for a fun night out. The last time she went to Calypso was during the Summer and there was a DJ and people dancing so we assumed that was the vibe all year round. Unfortunately, there wasn't a DJ but the music was great! We walked over to the bar and the bartenders were super cool. They gave us drink menus to look over and I love that they have mocktail options for those that don't drink alcohol. I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini and after the "included gratuity", my drink was $15, which was bit pricey. Overall, the night was great and we enjoyed ourselves! The longer we stayed, the more people started coming in and even though it was a bit chilly, some people decided to hang out in their outdoor patio area as well. We did have to park on 11th street and parking was $2/hr but it was worth it. If you're looking for a fun place to grab some food and drinks while vibing to some great music, head to the Calypso at the Oceanfront. read more

Well visiting the area for a end of summer mid week stay and wanted a bit of food and drink and found The Calypso. Our food was very good. My club on sourdough was really good and the nachos with added brisket were OMG great. Again all the food was really good. We had a few drinks from the bar and my old-fashion was right on point. As for the location: it appeared clean and well kept. Even the ladies room. We sat on the patio area, over looking the beach. Great View. As for staff: very friendly, served us well. So I do recommend this place in the area. I hope they take are of you as well as they took care of us. read more

Calypso was nicer inside than I expected from judging the outside for the past several years. A neighbor loves this spot for Sunday football and I can see why, the bar was bustling with several TVs with all the games on and tons of people gathered around enjoying a friendly atmosphere of football and rivalry. My husband comes here from time to time for guy's time to have some drinks and watch the games - he brought my daughter while I was at the Neptune Festival so I met him here and they were very nice to him with her while he was there waiting for me. Always makes a big difference. They have tons of seating inside and lots of large and spacious booths and a nice bathroom and patio area. read more

We stopped by Calypso to get a quick bite to eat and some drinks. Ok, so one person out of the three of us got a quick bit to eat, but all three of us had drinks. We visited on a Saturday night (in March), and i was surprised that the bar/restaurant was BUMPIN. If I didn't have an early morning the next day, I probably would have stayed around to vibe and dance to music from the late 90s and early 00s. ;) It was a bit intense because to get to dining area of the bar/restaurant, we kind of had to push our way through all the folks dancing and having a good time. Thinking back, there might have been a second entrance, but I don't completely remember. Overall, our experience was fine with the slight exception in that our server seemed to have a bit of an annoyance that only one person out of the three us ordered food. On one hand, I can understand the annoyance (a little bit). However, on the other hand, all three of us were ordering several rounds of drinks. So, it's not like the two us were just sitting at the table drinking water. read more

My boyfriend and I came to Calypso as it was a 2 minute walk from our hotel. We hoped for a quick and delicious meal, but our experience fell short. My first complaint is Calypso's many different entrances. We entered through the side closest to the street and were not greeted by anyone, even though there were two people standing behind a desk. We saw a sign saying the hosts were at a different entrance, but could not find this entrance for about 5 minutes. Finally, we asked a waitress where the host table was, and she said "it's in the back", which really did not help much. Eventually we found it and were seated. About 10 minutes later our waitress came. She informed us that they were out of sodas, pineapple juice, and that they could not boil anything, so boiled shrimp, veggies, and other items were off the table. She was nice, however, after we placed our order, we did not see her until she brought us our bill. A food runner brought us our food and our waitress never asked us how we were doing or anything. My boyfriend finished his water within a few minutes of receiving his food, but was never given a refill. As for the food, I ordered the fried shrimp tacos which I liked. It comes with two tacos and a side. Unfortunately each taco only came with two shrimp, so I was slightly disappointed. My boyfriend ordered a burger, but said it was average and plain. The restaurant has a nice view of the ocean, a live band, and a bar. The band played a lot of classic songs, which made the experience slightly better. Lastly, the prices were not bad, except for the automatic 18% gratuity, which I feel enables below average service. This gratuity is for every table, no matter the amount of people in the party. Overall, not a great experience. Would not recommend this place if you are looking to eat under an hour and a half. read more

I am vendor at the Neptune Festival this weekend and had a terrible interaction. Staff a bit disorganized. Didn't seem like the crowd was anything too chaotic. I went into 2 different doors and was redirected to somewhere different twice. I just wanted a take out order, but I was made to feel like that was an inconvenience. I'm visiting the area and heard great things about the food. Unfortunately I will never find out. read more

Stopped in here during my bachelorette weekend after a stroll on the boardwalk. We put our name down on the waitlist but prior to be called, seats cleared at the bar which is where we stayed. The bartender was prompt with our food and drink orders & gave me a couple of free shots which was very nice. The patrons were also very sweet and a couple bought some rounds for my girlfriends and I. The place was very lively and got very busy throughout our time there. We were told that all crab and steak was not available. Ordered a fish Po Boy and bbq sandwich. Someone came out 30 minutes later and said they didn't have the bread for a PoBoy and would substitute with Brioche. After 30 more minutes our food still hadn't arrived and no one had checked in on us. Terrible experience. read more

You don't need a reservation but there are some waiting times around 7 to 9 pm on Fri and Sat, but there is a TON of space available in the restaurant. If you are thinking of eating here, I would put in your name as soo n as you can and then take a good walk along the board walk of VA Beach. I ubered here, so I don't know if there is good parking around, but if you park at beach parking and walk around the beach to the restaurant, it is honestly the best thing you could do around this area. read more

This place was right next door to our hotel. They have happy hour specials. It's pretty big with an outside patio. It was raining while we were there and water was dripping the whole time right next to us. The bartenders Brett, Trent and Kevin were friendly and provided good service. We got brisket salad wraps. They were just ok. But some people seem to really like them. My wife was drinking surfsides and they were cheaper there than they are here (and they are made here in PA). Two Stars I'm a local who lives just down the street, and I brought my out-of-town family to the Oceanfront for a few drinks. We went to the outside bar, but since there was no seating there, we walked over to an area with plenty of open tables. A young lady told us there was an hour wait--even though there was nobody else waiting and many empty tables. We spoke with the manager, who explained they use a phone waitlist and call each individual, giving them five minutes to show up. This made no sense at all. We were paying customers only looking for drinks, and we even understood the kitchen was a bit behind, so we weren't ordering food. Still, we were turned away. I was very disappointed with how we were treated by both the hostess and the manager. Turning away ready-to-pay customers in favor of people who may or may not show up is bad business. We decided to leave, and it left a sour taste for the evening. Very disappointed overall. read more

Every time I go In here I'm left with staff that are EXTREMELY RUDE and conceited. At first I thought it was a personal experience with one staff member, but after tonight I know it's across the board. One of the staff members refused to let us use the bathroom after buying food and drinks because it was 1:30am even though they close at 2. At an 18% gratuity charge (for being rude?) you'd think that the woman ,that looks like a man, would be a little bit more understanding that it's state law for customers to use a bathroom in an establishment that sells food, drinks, and alcohol. Just started our vacation, we were here early, check in at 4, so we hit up Calypso's for lunch and the beginning of the football season. TVs were everywhere, which was great, everyone was having a great time..the food here is always great so it's a no brainer...the heat and sweet wings are amazing, my wife usually gets the beef bites...also excellent! Hands-down has to be one of my favorite places in Virginia to be at on Thursday nights. The karaoke host does a phenomenal job at singing and showing everybody a good time. I love this place not only because Karaoke because that is my main reason for going but the staff and everybody is pretty chill pretty dope and service is excellent. Every time I go there on Thursday night. I have a better experience in the week before I 100% think that if you never been here, please go there at least on Thursday nights when I'm there as well so I can sing. I enjoy singing so much. Came here on a busy Saturday for an early dinner. The space is pretty large, but I guess it's also pretty popular bc it was very busy. It took a while for our server to get to us, but once she did, everything came out pretty fast. Service is good and drinks are great! The food is hit or miss depending on what you get. The best thing we had were the fish tacos , so I highly recommend those. The jerk chicken tacos, taste nothing like jerk chicken and the carne asada tacos were lacking taste and flavor. Overall, the place is a decent place to eat, but gets packed and really busy. They have lots of tv screens with diff sports playing in the background. The best part of the restaurant is its location and the size! Food choices vary but they do have happy hour specials which we chose! From appetizers of nachos to boiled shrimp, also a pub burger - we had plenty to choose from. The nachos had few tortilla chips but overall tasty. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and had a nice butter or cocktail sauce. The burger was a bit overcooked and dry - but with enough ketchup and ranch we made it work ! We love coming to Calypso (especially for happy hour) on a nice day sitting outside. You get that ocean breeze and scenery of people enjoying life. You also get a good happy hour with great drink specials and apps that are very tasty! The main menu has a decent variety but do find it to be on the pricier side. We usually find ourselves landing with the happy hour drinks and apps or one of the sandwiches. The winner for us is the drink deals and the great patio that offers live entertainment and a lot of fun. The inside bar is great but find the other seating being a bit dark and with the kids, we are usually gone before it gets wild. If you are looking for a place to get good apps, drinks and live music vibes on the beach, this place is worth a visit. read more

Menu went like this: She-crab soup - delicious! A must have Spare ribs: dry. Minimal flavor, needed sauce Oysters on the half shell: best price in town and delicious! Then came the tacos. Jerk chicken: fairly good but way too dry Brisket: the better of the 2 little bit more moist but still not amazing hence why only 4 stars. Those are mainly for the she-crab soup! Great place to hang out and watch football games! We had family visiting and chose this local spot to watch the Cleveland Browns game . We didn't see the game so we asked and they gladly put it on for us and seated us outside right next to the tv, much appreciated! They have a tailgate menu for football snackies and we took advantage! Lobster macaroni and cheese $8 (only item we had on tailgate menu), oysters Rockefeller $15, chips and salsa $6 and lastly we had the calamari $14!!! A little gem to find in a packed area, and what we needed on our family trip. Their lobster mac was to die for, although me and my dad both had hiccups after so beware. If you're a light eater, I recommend splitting the lobster mac or planning to take out leftovers, it definitely wasn't a one-sitting feat. My mom also raved about the steak bites, which I also tried and they were very juicy. Our waitress Gabrielle F. was efficient and super friendly, even during one of Calypso's busier times we didn't feel rushed at all. If you're looking for a casual dining spot right on the boardwalk this place is it. They usually have live music on the weekends. I highly recommend the crab cake sandwich! They also have a great HH if you're looking for cheap but delicious eats/drinks! They do have valet parking and use to have their own parking lot but I think it's only for employees now and where valet parks the cars. read more
