I started following Camacho Garage on Instagram during Covid when I was trapped up in Vermont attempting to single handedly keep my little Diner alive. It took me a full two years to actually make it here. That was this past winter and I made some ERRORS when ordering my food that first night. Somehow I missed the fact that the tacos come 2 each and my CRAZY sever/bartender let me order SIX FREAKING TACOS after I'd already eaten 2 or 3 other things (I eat to WIN when I go out!!). I'm ashamed to say I couldn't do it y'all. I hate to be defeated by food! LOL I decided I needed to come back and do a better job of ordering before I reviewed. And here we are, like 6 months later. That's how long it took me to make it back. But I did! Before ever tasting the food at Camacho Garage I knew I wanted to come here. I mean I love tacos. Actual tacos. So there's that. But Camacho Garage is an actual garage/service station. The spot is SO FREAKING COOL. The buildout kept so much of the original service station aesthetic and then time warped it back to when owner/executive chef Arturo Franco-Camacho's father was raising his family working as a mechanic. I LOVE all the physical STUFF inside this place. The beef taps that are actually wrenches. The old cigarette machine (NOT with cigarettes, they are evil!). The bathroom stalls that are reclaimed metal. Fantastic freaking vibe. The entire place is centered around an oval bar in the middle. I am a bar diner. I love the fact that Camacho revolves around the bar. Every detail of the design inside Camacho Garage has been thought about and the right choices were made! But we're here to talk about food! Right? The food at Camacho Garage is based on Mexican Street Food/Tacos. So, already winning. You've got starters, salads, small plates, large plates, additional sides and an extensive Taco menu. There are vegetarian and even vegan options! You can just get some tacos. Or! Like me, you can make a plan in order to eat as many things as possible and then execute on that plan! I started with Guacamole. You can add all sorts of amazing things to your Guac. I added. Nothing. It is next level. Delicious and the presentation is fantastic. I had Traditional Mexican Salad. My other loves to add oranges to salad and, for some reason, I always avoid them? I think I've been making poor salad choices. This salad is jicama, pea shoots and little (Mandarin?) orange slices with a lovely, light dressing. DELICIOUS. I ate all the little orange slices. Then! I had Mushroom Birria Tamal small plate (corn masa, mixed chiles, birria broth, corn esquites, cotija). I don't eat beef, pork or poultry, so I never get to eat Birria anything. I was EXCITED to find vegetarian Birria. And it is DELICIOUS. Even a little spicy. At this point it was time to order tacos and I knew to pick ONE. I got the battered cod. Tacos are served on housemade corn tortillas and PILED with the most delicious Pico. The cod was hot and perfectly crispy and a wonderful texture contrast with the pico and the tortilla. These are huge. These are messy. I used my fork to make sure I got every bit of every thing that fell to my plate. Okay, I was full. But you know when you want to push just a little "past full"?? I ordered the Tijuana Caesar Salad. I. Love. Caesar. Salad. I ordered it the first time too. But! That time I failed to notice the Romaine is grilled in this salad. I ate it. I happen to HATE grilled Romaine. This time I requested it not grilled. This is one of the better iterations of Caesar Salad I've had. The Blue Corn Masa "croutons" are better than any crouton you've had... I had a glass of White Sangria and a glass of Red Sangria. My total bill was $100. I was officially, uncomfortably full. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and was quickly seated in their covered outdoor seating They have a space that is "outdoor" but becomes indoor due to the large window doors being able to retract up like "garage doors". The atmosphere is really nice inside service wasn't bad. It wasn't the fastest but it was adequate and our server was friendly. They have really nice long heaters installed in the space and they were blasting higher than necessary that day. My friend and I were sweating by the end of the meal. We ordered Half order of oysters I did not have any of the oysters but my friend enjoyed them. Gordita with potato and chorizo(3/5) It's kind of a messy sandwich made of masa filled with potatos and chorizo. The masa pocket definitely tasted like it was made in house which was a bonus. I took a bite of it from my friend and I could tell this dish can become very heavy if you eat it all as a meal. It is a good dish to share though. Tacos de Birria(3/5) This taco comes with 2 homemade corn tortilla that definitely tastes homemade and stuffed with a few chunks of beef that were pretty tender. The beef consome is super salty but it pairs well when you dip the taco in because the beef was didn't pack as much of a punch by itself. Cocktail Ceviche(4/5) The presentation was really pretty and the seafood tasted fresh. They used decently sized shrimp so you can also taste the shrimp and get the meaty texture. Horchata(2/5) I've tried a lot of horchata and this one was really thin and liquidy. The flavor was also very mild. There is a lot of ways to make horchata but most of them are creamier and much sweeter in taste. The food presentation was good and the flavors were not bad but the food is definitely on the pricier side for the portion that you get. Waitress, holding a water pitcher, asked us if we want sparkling or still water. We said "still, please." She gathered our empty glasses and walked away with the water pitcher. What just happened?!?! Picked this restaurant due to it being restaurant week in New Haven. First off, love the location. Downtown New Haven can feel overwhelming at times due to parking and it being busy, and this spot is conveniently located. The building and decor has an old time garage feel. I think in warmer weather, the garage doors go up to the outdoor seating? Not too sure though. I picked from their regular menu and needed to look up what chihuahua cheese was (am I the only one?! Haha). I ordered the Totopo Kit, Mexican Street Corn, Quesadilla de Huilacoche (add chorizo),and the Croquetas de Chorizo. The salsa in the totopo kit had such a KICK to it. I dipped the chip in all 3 salsas and it was so yummy! The street corn also had chipotle Mayo on it giving it a small kick, but my favorite part was the outside crunch they added. The quesadilla was made with a corn tortilla which gave it such a nice flavor. The croquetas de chorizo had such a nice flavor and crunch. Two of them on a plate was definitely enough! I give this place 4 stars due to service. The wait staff was very nice but not so much attentive. I had to ask for water often and waited about 15 min after someone else came to clear the table to be asked about a check. I am giving this place four stars instead of three because once they finally rock-paper-scissors to send someone to our table, they realized they were facing two very hangry women and sped up our service. The place was empty when we got there and we were shown to a table. I watched as the manager asked multiple staff who would be assigned to our table and they each looked, shrugged, and walked away. Finally our waiter came over and brought us waters. We ordered two kinds of tacos (chicken and veggie) and they arrived really quickly. We took one of each and, y'all, they hit the spot. They were exactly what we needed. I had to ask twice for our waters to be refilled and they never were, but we were in and out pretty quickly so it wasn't a huge deal. Been here quite a few times and it's very very good. Each plate has special attention payed to it and it shows. Great Happy Hour specials also with margaritas, beer, and wine specials as well as several food options. The inside is very cool with gas station decor all over. I've got four words for you- Birria Tacos with LOBSTER! Holy fun and delicious. Everyone talks about having a Lobster Roll over the summer, but let's switch it up. This is beyond delicious and should definitely be on your list to try. We sat at the bar and our bartenders Damien and Maria were awesome. I had a coconut margarita with some Coco Lopez in it and it was great! For apps, we tried the Queso Flameado with Mushrooms, Poblanos with Flour Tortillas. You could add Chorizo, Lobster, Chicken or Steak. We went with steak and it was bangin! Talk about a cheese pull! Also tried the Guacamole with Pineapple and Shrimp--- another hit! The loudest place in the whole world is Camacho Garage on a Saturday night. Idk anything about architecture or why this happens. I'm not a physicist (yet). But holy cow the noise bounces off the walls and right into my skull, where my own thoughts are replaced by whatever flavor margarita someone is ordering at the bar. I went here with some friends and its a super cute spot, great ambiance, cool weird Texaco signs on the walls or whatever (who came up with the concept of Tex-Mex auto repair restaurant?) But it's SO LOUD. Like, ear-piercingly loud. Loud enough I went to the bathroom and rolled up some toilet paper and put it into my ears. (Cool trick right? And you rarely lose toilet paper into your skull.) Service can be a little spotty, so if they come over and offer to take your order, just put something in cause who knows when you'll see that person again. Food is very solid, prob on par with Geronimo (I think perhaps owned by some people?). Good guacamole, interesting sides. A little pricey, but that's how it is in New Haven, even in Westville. I went there for lunch with my Dad and he was really impressed so I should prob give them 4 stars but that would be for lunch only, when it's quiet-ish. Its better if you can sit outside, but its just hard to justify a great review when you're literally like "am I going to suffer permanent hearing damage going to a bar?" But night time? Dinner? My only complaint is that, as a bigger guy, the outdoor metal seats are narrow and have uncomfortable metal bars the dig into one's legs. Everyone that works here is very nice and checked in with you frequently, which I loved. Newer Hispanic and pop music was played. It was enjoyable I came during happy hour and the happy hour menu was very limited so don't expect to get a real good deal unless you like what's being offered. I was told it may have been because it was Yale's graduation week, so I may have to come back another time to evaluate again I had a 7 PM dinner reservation with my friend, but they were running a little behind so our table wasn't ready until 7:15. Therefore we decided to head to the bar to get some drinks. Luckily there were some seats available My friend got a spicy marg and I got an interesting whisky centric cocktail. Both were delicious When we finally got our table my friend and I decided to split a bunch of different things. We went for chips & guac and 3 different tacos: steak, shrimp, and lamb. The guac was pretty tasty and it came with a few large, circular, fried tortillas that you had to break in order to make a regular sized chip (if that makes any sense). In terms of the tacos, the steak taco was underwhelming, but the shrimp and lamb taco were both pretty tasty My friend and I also decided to order their churros for dessert. Tacos are about simplicity, and at times if the approach has too many frills, the appeal falls apart. Not so, in Camacho Garage's presentation. It's been a few weeks since we ate there, and were in a bit of a rush, so we got it as takeout. I'd recommend eating there. The biggest draw, for me, is that they do not stop short on the spice. I'm a 'this-isn't-hot-enough' kind of person, but not here. The dish that had middle eastern inspiration was excellent: a building heat that really packs a sensation on the backside of a bite. It will sneak up on you, and if you're like me, that's not an unpleasant surprise. The birra tacos were good, but I expected a bit more savor from the stew/broth/sauce(?). The sister restaurant of Geronimos and Shell and Bones is obviously going to be great. I have been here two times now and each visit proved to be spectacular. Last night the fire alarm unexpectedly went off. The serves and managers made sure to comfort the guests and had the fire dept. come by ASAP to turn it off. It was loud for 10 minutes but nothing some margaritas couldn't fix :) shit happens sometimes. The guacamole is really phenomenal just as it is at Geronimos. We also got the street corn which was great. It's hard to find Birria tacos in New Haven and was very happy to find them on the menu. You NEED to try them! Outstanding! The decor and atmosphere is really cool with a laid back car garage vibe. We spent 3 hours drinking, eating and chatting with good friends. A tale of two visits...one was great, the second - not so much. And in fact, if the second had been our first? There wouldn't have been a second. Let's start from the beginning. Our first visit - a busy Friday night - two couples. While the service was spotty, the food was great! The Duck Tambores were absolutely delicious. The guac, also good - but SUPER overpriced ($14 for regular, added $8 for lobster...and there wasn't really enough to justify nearly $10 more). My dinner was a the steak special - perfectly cooked and delish. My dinner companions were all happy with their food as well. A fun atmosphere and decent food meant were were absolutely going to come back (in spite of the service - we're not high maintenance people...but had to fight to get our waitresses attention and the food/drink timing was a bummer). Which brings us to visit #2...on Mother's Day. Yikes. A few issues at play, starting with the size of drinks. Why? If you tell me it's a 16-ounce beer, it should be a 16-ounce glass - it wasn't. It was a 12-ounce glass at best. And when my hubs brought it up to the bartender? Her laughable reply was "That's OUR 16 ounce." Sorry...ounces don't change for a particular establishment. Now the food. I'll be completely up front - tacos (Mexican food in general) is like a religion to me. And ever since I moved to Connecticut from San Diego in '95, the dragon I've been chasing? Baja Fish Tacos. So when I saw them on he menu? I figured, "They won't screw it up...they'll be great!" Nope. The TINEST piece of fried fish nestled in a mountain of veg. Serious disappointment. My husband had followed my lead and agreed - royal bummer. We even ordered a steak quesadilla to split (because we were still hungry), but more on that in a second. That's because something pretty unforgivable happened. My son had ordered the chorizo brunch quesadilla - and while it was a wonderful portion, and he reported great flavor...he also pulled a piece of steel wool out of the thing. I'll give the manager credit for being nice about it, but seriously. Steel freakin wool?! Imagine if the person that ate it was 6 not 16. As for the other quesadilla, sad presentation (a blue tortilla just flopped on the plate, hardly any cheese and the steak inside? Oversalted...just a bummer. In all, my poor husband kept apologizing for something he had such hopes for. As I explained to him - "It's the thought that counts...you're not responsible for their lousy delivery." I guess I just expect more out of Arturo. Very fun, lively place in Westville, New Haven area. Friday and Sat nights in the summer spring are crazy with pretty long waits on service but the food is really good. Went a few weeks ago with some work friends and the food was outstanding! I had the Verano salad with steak and my friend got the Steak special...can't remember the name of it but was served over rice and beans with side of guacamole and salsa. She love it! My steak was so tender and flavorful and the citrus fruits in the salad was the perfect pairing to cut the fat and spice on the steak. Just fantastic! I usually get a skinny spicy margarita which are really small but super good. This time had a hazy IPA which was a nice pairing. Really fun place to come with a group of friends on a nice afternoon or evening but likely not the best for kids. read more

My husband and I decided to come here for dinner on a whim after we were in the area and had been wanting to dine here for awhile. We were able to call ahead and grab a reservation for 20 minutes away which was super convenient! We were seated immediately upon arriving at a table outside. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very unique and lively for a Monday evening! We got the queso and oysters for appetizers which I thought were good but not great. The queso seemed like it was more mushrooms/ veggies than actual cheese. The margaritas were great and they had several different flavors to choose from!! For our entrees we got the carnitas and pork al pastor tacos, both were very good. The street corn side was good as well! I asked for mine off the cob which they were easily able to accommodate. We were too full for dessert but the dessert options looked great, especially the flan and the churros! We would love to come back here to try more items off of the menu. I've been eager to try this place for quite a while now and we decided to bring our out of town friends to join us on our first trip here. We made a reservation which I encourage as we wanted to sit in the patio area on a Tuesday, and the only options were 5:00 or 8:30! So definitely make a reservation ahead of time. Our waitress was very friendly and came over a few different times to get our drink and app orders, main courses, etc. For an appetizer, my husband and I got the shrimp aguachile. Flavors were a great mix, definitely what I was hoping for, but no heat even though it says there are serrano peppers. Our favorite ever aguachiles were from a place in NYC where I literally needed a glass of water after every bite so these needed more of a kick. As a table, we all shared the guacamole. It was very good though had a few extra things it didn't need (flowers? seed thingies?) The texture and flavor were great though - just wish the portion was a bit bigger (which is pretty much always the case with guac at any restaurant). For dinner, I got the shrimp ala diabla taco 'naked' bowl which they serve in a bowl of grains, beans, and greens. Overall it was good, though it could have used more shrimp (still not sure why this was $11 and the aguachile appetizer was $16?) and it had *0* heat - this time I was more disappointed. La diabla was no where to be found! I liked the ambiance and menu here but I would say prepare to spend a lot on dinner here. For 4 people, food + drinks, our bill was $235. We debated dessert but the waitress informed us the kitchen had been closed for a while so there went that plan. This is one of the few, if any, places in New Haven that does these kinds of tacos and ceviche-style places which makes them a destination, but I don't think I'd go too often just due to the prices and they need más picante! read more

This place is such a vibe! It's located in what seems to be an old gas station garage. But it's definitely a taco spot! The service was awesome. It was a busy Thursday and we had no reservation but they were able to accommodate us on such short notice which we love! The place was packed so we thought we would be waiting a long time for food and drinks, I was wrong! Everything came out so fast and was delicious! Margaritas....crisp and clean! Is the salt rimmed around the short perfect glass straight out of the ocean?! Super! The interior is transcending. Traditional Mexican Flavors, really tasty, fresh....spicy Service was excellent! Wait staff was extremely knowledgeable regarding the menu, recommendations were spot on! Last but certainly not least....dessert... churros we're the best The best we've ever had. Vanilla bean flecks in the ice cream, chocolate was smooth and coated the perfectly prepared churros-so good. We will start with dessert on our next visit! Thank you. read more
