Had an amazing experience had Camelia. Every dish we ordered was delicious. We sat outside in the lovely patio. Service was phenomenal. Would definitely be back!

I've enjoyed having a spot like Camelia in Los Angeles with a bit of fusion flair. This was our second visit and though it wasn't as memorable as the first, it was still enjoyable. The pot pie is easily the can't‑miss dish being the most memorable dish during both visits. On the second visit, we tried: - Black Sesame Parker House Rolls - Broccolini - Grilled Oyster Mushrooms - Croque Madame with ham katsu (gruyère, mornay sauce, shokupan, cornichons) - Pork Chop - Duck Frites - Abalone & Bay Scallop Pot Pie (king trumpet mushrooms, "snail butter"). You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu though I will say the duck dish I had enjoyed more on my first visit; this time around it leaned noticeably salty, which took away from the dish I enjoyed before. Service is friendly and the space has a bit of an understated, comfortable feel, but intentional. It's the kind of place where you settle in, enjoy the food, and appreciate the details. I love the thoughtfulness of the dishes. Though a few inconsistencies between visits, still a spot I'd return to, especially for that pot pie.

We had reservations so we sat right away. The place was basically full inside and outside already right at opening so service was kind of slow. It's dimly lit and loud since there were so many people there already. We were ready to order everything by the time someone came to take our drink order. It's happy hour 5-6pm so half price oysters and discounted highballs. 1/2 dozen oysters were great ! So fresh and creamy Uni and bluefin tuna toast was extremely disappointing. $28 for 2 tiny pieces and it wasn't very flavorful and the toast was soggy The seabass was average again not really worth the price. The mashed potatoes were sweet kind of weird Abalone and scallop pot pie was phenomenal !!!! I could eat 10 of these !! If I ever come back I'd skip most of these items and just get way more oysters and another pot pie

Camelia, a restaurant tucked away on corner street on the outer edges of the Arts District. I came here to take advantage of my $150 restaurant credit through my Chase CC and luckily Camelia had open spots a day before they expire. Overall I thought my EXPERIENCE was solid and the FOOD was decent. Let me break it down. I'll list from best to worst. The pot pie was the standout--it came out piping hot. Medium chunks of scallops and bits of snail. Has a creamy and tart/sour taste from the lemon they serve. The bread on top was flaky. Would order again. 6 dozen oysters (during happy hour 5-6pm)--I haven't had oysters in a while, but the were the best I had in a while. They come with a yuzu type sauce and a tomato based sauce. Both were good. These next three I'll group them together as good/decent but nothing special. The mousse pate was packed with flavor, wish the bread was crispier. Spaghetti I can make this better. Burger was okay with lots of melted cheese and (I think) carmelized onions between a brioche--wish this had more in it. The worse thing was the broccolini. I'm not sure why this is even on the menu. If not for the pot pie, the food alone would be a solid 3. I bumped it up to 4 because of the pot pie, the delicious (and stiff) drinks, and the overall experience.

Came here on a Sunday night and it was packed. This is a hip, unpretentious restaurant that gave me a Seattle vibe. Service was friendly, attentive but not intrusive. We started with chicken liver mousse toast with blackberry mostarda and yuzu daikon. These two small crostinis are just enough to whet our appetites. We initially ordered the abalone scallop pot pie and Japanese sea bream. The pot pie crust was melt in your mouth flaky. The filling, consisting of tiny diced cubes of abalone, baby scallops (whole) and king mushroom had a mild, buttery taste. Frankly, I felt that the filling was quite scant, albeit tastes good. The sea bream had a crusty skin on top and the flesh was flaky. The sauce was really good. We ended up ordering the black sesame rolls so we could sop all the sauce from the plate. Anyway, we were still hungry so I ordered the pork chop and boy, was it good! It had a breaded crust of honey mustard goodness. It was cooked perfectly tender and somehow has absorbed the flavor of the seasonings. Anyway, we enjoyed this meal and will definitely be back.

Came to celebrate our anniversary and had a great experience at Camelia. Cocktails (3.5/5): while they were good, we felt that they were lacking in alcohol content and tasted a little watered down. Oysters (5/5): great value for happy hour and they were tasty. Bluefin tuna toast (2/5): for the cost, the quality did not match and it didn't have much flavor. Chicken liver toast (5/5): highly recommend, I normally don't like chicken liver but I loved this one. Japanese Bolognese (3.5/5): solid, but nothing too special about it. Abalone pot pie (5/5): one of the highlights of the meal, could have eaten one by myself! Duck (4/5): it was cooked well and tasty, loved the fries that came with it. Overall a very nice spot for dinner, highly recommend coming earlier to catch their happy hour deals. Good music, nice ambiance, perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. Not sure if we would pay full price, but using our Chase Sapphire Reserve benefit was worth it!

French Japanese! Looking over the menu, this place might seem a bit pretentious with the heavy use of fancy ingredient names and French terminologies, but the food is generally pretty recognizable and tasty. Chicken Liver Mousse - It's like, interesting. Very small appetizer of sorts. Chicken Liver on a tiny piece of toast. Bite-sized. Realistically, might not feel worth the $14 price tag, but heck, we're also here to have a culinary experience of sorts, right? If you don't care for liver and you want actual substantial food, then you can probably skip it. Pork Chop w/ Hot Mustard crust - It was very good! Pork chop was very juicy and delicious. The exterior crust was crispy at some points, and it lead to a very delightful texture. The entree is also tastefully complimented with slices of peaches and fennel. I was very pleased with it. Sweet Potato Gratin - To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of sweet potato. Despite that, I thought it was still pretty good. It also pairs really well with the Pork Chop. Mines came out a little late after I had already finished the Pork, but I still had some pieces of the Pork Chop's crust layer which paired *really* well with the Gratin. If you love sweet potato, you will definitely enjoy this. If you're so-so about sweet potato, it's still pretty good. Abalone and Scallops Pot Pie - This was my favorite. Honestly, if I could order a bigger bowl that was twice the size filled with twice the Abalone and Scallops, I would be over the moon. I love both ingredients, and the "snail butter" complements really well with them. (Snail butter is the same thing they would use with escargot, only without the escargot. I think it's butter with parsley, garlic and shallots) There's a slice of lemon too you can add as well. I alternated bites of the puff pastry lid and the seafood filling, and when I ran out of the latter, I'd dip the puff pastry into the snail butter. It's really good! The service was very friendly and on-par with what I'd expect from a fancier restaurant. My sweet potato gratin was supposed to pair with the pork chops but came out a bit late (even though these are technically two separate dishes) and they were super apologetic about it. I didn't really mind it (although it would have been nice) but I could tell that they are trying to hold themselves to a higher standard because of the interaction. Honestly, I was pretty impressed and while it didn't blow my mind, I wouldn't mind coming back if fate dictates.

Liked the ambiance, high ceilings, and their overall setting. Went ahead to sit at the bar...the bartender was super friendly and welcoming. I was surprised that hot towel 'oshibori' was brought to me - very nice touch! I love oshibori! I asked how their burger was...his response was it was the first item he decided to take back home since it was really good, well, I'm sold! Ordered happy hour beverage as well - they looked to be good deals. Both the burger and fries were tasty and perfect with aioli! While the bar seating was filled up while I was eating, the bartender paid close attention and knew the timing to ask for refill. ;) Anyhow, I enjoyed my weekday happy hour experience downtown LA!

I want to first start off thanking the staff, especially Patrick and Rebecca for an incredible experience. Everyone had amazing hospitality and attention to detail. We did the tasting menu and it showcased variety of flavors. We added some additional dishes. Our favorite dish was the Jimmy Nardello peppers. The flavors were out of this world (I would eat that everyday if I could). Every wine that was recommended, paired so lovely with every course. It truly was a special dinner. Thank you all!

Came here for dinner and I was quite impressed with the food. Service was also top tier as well. Each dish came out in a timely manner and was well coursed out. We got oysters, HH bubbles and highball, pot pie, broccolini, prawns, croque madame, duck, and pork chop. Honestly the broccolini and croque madame were just okay to me. But we really enjoyed everything else we ordered. The duck was definitely the highlight of the meal though. We were too excited and forgot to take a picture of the oysters, duck, and pork chop. The server also recommended me to try their espresso martini, it was infused with pandan and it had the flavor profile without being overwhelming or too much. The restaurant is cute and intimate, definitely a good date night spot in the area.

Service and ambiance was good. Food was also really tasty as well. I docked one point because although the food was good, it was a little too salty. This was a common theme across all the dishes we ordered. I generally enjoy foods on the saltier side, but if I thought it was salty, it would probably be too salty for others. Definitely get the pot pie, it was the star of the night. We were able to find street parking, but there are also parking lots nearby that cost around $5 an hour.

Besides the toasts, all the dishes were way too salty. Also, the spaghetti noodles were undercooked and crunchy. The duck breast was tender, but then again, way too salty. The dishes are interesting ideas combining French and Japanese cuisine, but the execution was a miss. Food aside, there was a seating hiccup. We had to be seated outside, even though I indicated I'd like to be seated in the standard "indoor" room on my opentable reservation. Per the restaurant, standard includes indoor and outdoor seating together. It should be made clear on Opentable if that's the case. Their manager, I think named Patric, had wonderful service and was a pleasure to have around. I guess he was the only highlight of this restaurant lol (ironically not the food)

Branzino - delicious sauce and well cooked!
    Michael K.

My wife and I enjoyed the food and service here. I recommend the branzino, spaghetti bolognese with a Japanese twist, and sweet potato gratin. The croque madame was nothing special and can be made at home for a fraction of the cost. It was interesting, and likely a coincidence, that the restaurant sat all the Asian people at one side of the restaurant. Very peculiar... The fella bussing tables had WAY too much cologne on and it was overwhelming every time he came by to grab our finished plates. Our tables are too close to the neighboring tables as well so when the staff come to take orders and stuff, their butts are right in our faces. It was a bit too close for comfort at the booths and I can hear every word of the neighbor's conversations even though I didn't want to.

The indoor seating was bar tops only and their tables are outside in the makeshift patio, since they are located in a shopping center with Yum Yum Donuts. We didn't love how in order to park in the lot we had to pay the $17 valet fee even though there were plenty of spaces. I feel like that service should only be mandatory during peak dining hours. Anyways, the host and hostess were both very nice and walked us to our table. The host/our waiter for the first half of the meal made some recommendations and shared what the daily special was. To drink, I had the Spritz which was good - nothing to write home about, but it got the job done. We started our meal with a fresh baguette and homemade butter which was divine. For our main meal, we shared the heirloom tomato salad, trout almandine, and "Big Mec" with frites. The heirloom salad - although simple - was refreshing and had a perfectly balanced dressing. The trout was the start of the show. Crispy skin, crispy almonds, and SWIMMING in butter. The Big Mec was also quite good, but I think at that point I was a bit too full to enjoy it. But the meat was cooked well, and the sauce they drizzle on top was tasty. No dessert since we were stuffed. It was truly an indulgent meal. Of the French restaurants I have had in LA, I'd say Petit Trois was memorable. I think if I were to go again I would visit their Sherman Oaks location solely based on the ambiance.

We were told the Big Mec was the move for a first visit. So rich, so delicious. I've honestly never had a burger quite in that category before. We had the steak frites too and loved it. The whole thing just felt like a great lunch. Taking our time, hanging at the bar, nowhere to rush off to. Only thing missing was a glass of wine, which I'll fix next time. Very excited we finally made it. Can't wait to come back.

I appreciate that they have the option of a personalized dinner menu which is what my partner got for me, and they even bring you a large envelope so you can take the menu home. It took us some time to be greeted by our waitress. I felt the service was lacking. She was nice, but I felt like we were often forgotten. For our drinks I had a cucumber gin martini and my partner had the Casanova. Both were delicious! For our appetizer, we ordered the Piri-Piri shrimp. It was 4 pieces of shrimp lined up with small circles of flatbread in between each piece, seated on top of a smoky and flavorful sauce. We both loved it! For our main meal we ordered the couscous "Royale," fresh Papardelle pasta, and roasted carrots. The couscous came with one lamp chop, stewed lamb, merguez, and chicken - with a side of sliced almonds and dried apricot for topping, extra lamb stew sauce, and the most incredible harissa. I absolutely loved this dish, it was so flavorful. The pasta was a solid dish as well, and the roasted carrots were also fantastic. For dessert, we ordered the lava cake and I had Moroccan mint tea. The lava cake was well balanced with flavor and not overly sweet. The tea was fragrant, sweet, and the best way to end the meal. Overall I had a nice first experience at The Little Door. I don't think there's much left on the menu that I would want to try. I would love if they added more Moroccan-inspired dishes to the menu to make them stand out! But I feel like I would still come back, and I recommend it as a place for date night or to celebrate a birthday.

More recently it housed LaBrea Bakery and the Campanile Restaurant before Republique opened in 2013. A few outdoor tables as well as many indoor community and private standard and high tables, and a full bar. There are also some seating upstairs, sometimes reserved for private groups. I have only been there for breakfast and lunch and cannot rate the fancier dinner items. My favorites are the Lobster Omelet, the Mushroom Toast and the Croque Madame. I found the Eggs Benedict and the Steak Frites a bit underwhelming. The Eggs Benedict lacked flavor and the steak was a little tough and chewy... I also felt that the Fingerling Potatoes and the French Fries were way too salty. Drinks 4 stars: Full bar, specialty cocktails and coffee/matcha. No mainstream soft drinks. I have had the Ube Coconut Matcha Latte (it was overwhelmingly sweet!), the Tiramisu (it's a drink! delicious), the Green Shake (smoothie, quite good) and the hot Cappuccino (ok). Serving sizes are on the smaller size.

This is a long-overdue post. République has been on my must-visit list of LA dining experiences for…read morequite some time. I just never realized where it was since I don't usually make it out to Hancock Park. Then one day, while I happened to be in the area, I stumbled upon it and had one of those "Wait...this is here?!" moments. You ever have one of those places you've wanted to visit forever, only to realize it was much closer than you thought? My first visit was actually for dessert after having a less-than-memorable lunch at Mish down the street. Unfortunately, I arrived later in the day and most of the pastry case had already been wiped out, leaving only a limited selection. The staff recommended the Dulce de Leche Cremadette ($6.75), and I'm glad they did. It was perfectly flaky, buttery, and sweet, with the dulce de leche tucked inside the pastry. The caramel reminded me of the caramel coating on a caramel apple. I also picked up some brownies at the staff's recommendation, and those were fantastic -- incredibly moist, rich, and delicious. Definitely a must-get. I was a little disappointed that I missed out on the majority of the pastry selection, but I was told that the pastries are made in limited batches each day and once they sell out, that's it. So if you're coming specifically for the pastries, get here early. Earlier this summer, I made the acquaintance of an OG Yelper, Joseph A., and we've been corresponding back and forth on Yelp. I happened to know that he's a regular at République, so I asked if he'd be interested in meeting me right when they opened. I figured if anyone knew what to order, it would be him. Joseph was incredibly kind and gracious enough to treat me to breakfast. I ordered his usual breakfast recommendation: the Regular Breakfast ($24), which comes with bacon steak, fingerling potatoes, a demi baguette, French butter, jam, and an egg prepared any style. Joseph went with the soft scramble, and I followed his lead. That was definitely the move. They really know how to cook eggs here. The soft scramble was absolutely divine -- creamy, delicate, and perfectly cooked. The bacon steak was a little on the salty side, but still very good. The demi baguette was excellent, especially with the French butter and jam. Honestly, I could have eaten several pieces of that baguette with the butter and jam alone. The fingerling potatoes were nicely seasoned and quite good on their own, but a few dashes of hot sauce really took them up another notch. I'll be honest: $24 is definitely on the pricey side for what you're getting, especially when you break down the individual components. That said, when you factor in the quality of the food, the setting, and the overall experience, I can understand why people are willing to pay it. We also shared several pastries, and every single one was excellent in its own right. I'm officially hooked on the pastries here. They just don't miss. Service was pretty good during my visit. One thing worth noting is that République adds a 4% surcharge to the bill to help cover healthcare for their staff. It's certainly something to be aware of when looking at the final bill. f you're looking for a quintessential LA brunch experience to take out-of-towners to, République is a great option. Just be prepared for potentially long lines, especially on weekends. I visited on a weekday morning over the summer, so I didn't personally experience the weekend crowds. My only real wait was at the pastry counter during my first visit. I've heard you can expect people lining up before they even open at 8AM, so plan accordingly. The cult following surrounding Walter and Margarita Manzke's restaurant/café is understandable. Between the food, pastries, atmosphere, and history of the building, there's a lot to appreciate here. And speaking of history, the building itself is pretty special. The property was built in 1928 by Charlie Chaplin. It became a restaurant in 1989 when chefs Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton transformed the space to open La Brea Bakery and Campanile. After Campanile closed in 2012, the building was renovated and modified to open up the space while returning it closer to the spirit of its original construction. République opened in 2013 and has been going strong ever since. Do yourself a favor and eat at République. Come for the food and pastries, but also take some time to appreciate the ambiance and the history of this incredible LA property. And whatever you do, get here early if you want the pastries. Once they're gone, they're gone! Don't walk--run to République.

You sit basically in the market, which is fine. The chairs aren't super comfortable but that is the last of my complaints. Service is friendly and professional. The menu is full of delicious things. And the entire experience is just lovely. My friend's quiche and my croque monsieur were so fantastic. Presented beautifully. And both are offered with a choice of salad or fries. And yes, normally I would say salad. NOT HERE. Their fries are properly shoestring, fried exceptionally well and served (as they should be) with a choice of mayo or mustard - even ketchup. They are delicious. I had fresh Orange Juice that was amazing, and my friend got the sparkling lemonade. SO GOOD! I loved this so much. I cannot wait to come back here for one of their cheese boards and wine pairings after weekday shopping at the market. That sounds like an absolutely perfect evening.

I feel like the pesto sauce was a bit overwhelming. Would not order again. Unfortunately, the salmon plate was toooo oily for my liking. Every bite felt sooo heavy because of the amount of oil. My plate was soaked in oil & juices. The potato's that it comes served with were not touched by me. After one bite, I knew I couldn't eat any more of it. Plus, even if the potatoes were good, I think the salmon was so heavy that I couldn't stomach both. The stars come from the setting! The escargot is probably the best I've had. I loved how buttery it was and the snail itself was so fresh and tender. I'd definitely repurchase this on another visit. I even dipped some of the baguette bread (which had the best crunch!) into the butter and it was perfection! For our mains, we got the sea bass with lentils and the Alaskan halibut, and both were prepared perfectly down to taste and texture. Everything about its execution felt very intentional. The halibut was baked with the right amount of breading and the sea bass was pan seared to give that nice crispy texture to the skin. My only critique is I thought the lentils were a bit too overpowering because of the huge quantity, but honestly, everything else was amazing enough that I'm not bothered by it.

Food is always an area that I leave up to everyone's own taste. To me I felt some of the dishes needed more salt but I always enjoy my food from how the chef prepped it so I can try new dishes.
