This place had really amazing food and wonderful presentation. The service was great and overall a great dinner. The patatas bravas was absolutely delicious twist on such a simple potato wedge dish. The sauces really made it amazing however, I think the potatoes could definitely be crispier. The croquetas were not what we expected. They were much softer and looser than we thought but overall still tasted great. The arroz negra was delicious. The rice was perfectly flavored anf cooked along with the muscles. Can Font for me is one of those places I was satisfied I tried it once, but wouldn't make a conscious effort to go back. And while I have nothing bad to say, I also have nothing memorable to say, it met expectations of tapas at the typical steep price of such cuisine. Great staff, willing to explain to us everything on the menu and how things are prepared, I personally like my seafood slightly undercooked but they were very honest that paella of course has a baking stage... so while they make sure their seafood doesn't dry out, medium cooked seafood they can't do. I appreciated the willingness to explain all this to me. Decor was modern and bright which added to the trendy feel. Highlight of the night was octopus which I would recommend. Paella was good and I understand the cooking process involved, but boy is it a steep price. In summary I agree with the 4-star average as of Fall'19. I don't even want to talk about this dish anymore. Paella was over cooked. As in, every single piece of seafood was over cooked and the rice was burnt and stuck to the bottom. Shellfish were so over cooked that they were stuck to the sides of the shell and had to be peeled off... shrimp was chewy, salmon was chewy. Just a complete failure of a dish. I will give them 2 stars because the servers were nice, but there HAS to be better Spanish/Iberian cuisine in Portland. The five stars are for the kind manager. We returned to Can Font after a three year hiatus. It was packed, unlike three years ago. Our table wasn't ready, and we were sent to a sports bar down the block. An hour later, we took our seats as a table finally was empty. Can Font was not expecting the apres pandemic crowds, and were having difficulty meeting the demand. Service was good, the Paella Negro mediocre. My assumption: The kitchen was exhausted and overwhelmed. We were comped my cocktail. A very nice gesture. We paid the very reasonable bill, Portland is so much cheaper than Seattle, and left. We decided to walk back to our hotel on this lovely Friday evening. As we strolled west on Northrup, the manager came running behind us extending a $20 bill. He felt bad about our wait and insisted I take the money. I didn't want it, but a scene would be unsavory. I thanked him and we went on our way. Saturday night date nights have gone out the window since the pandemic began, yet with the world coming back to some semblance of normalcy, my girlfriend and I thought it would be good to have a dinner out. She found Can Font on Yelp, we made a reservation and we found that Saturday night date night is back! Can Font is nestled on a quiet corner of the Pearl District and specializes in shareable tapas dishes, great cocktails and a dynamite wine selection. We shared a number of dishes, all of which were excellent, though my favorites were the Iberico ham croquettes and Albondigas. The bartender makes a great Negroni with mezcal, if you ask, and their wine selection had more than a few choices which we want to return for. The experience was made even better by the attentive staff, who had recommendations and was always around when we needed something. They also are taking all the correct precautions for Covid-19, so we felt safe and comfortable during the entire dinner. As the world comes back to normal, if you're feeling a night out, you can do no wrong at Can Font. Just be sure to grab a reservation as the weekend nights get booked up. Happy Eating! read more

I wanted to give this place a five star but there were some misses and some home runs, so let's chat on the menu. The Ensalada de Rucula started the evening off wonderfully. It's a salad, which I don't normally order, but I'm glad I did. It was so tart and fresh; it was nearly the star of my meal. I could've just had that instead of some of the other tapas. The Crema de Setas, a mushroom soup, veganized, was subtle and soothing to the wake up from the salad. The Potatos Bravas were potatoes with a vegan aioli. You can have regular aioli. They were salty and well cooked, a real treat for the tastebuds. There was a mixed reaction to those, but we gobbled them up. The disappointing dish was the Pan con Tomate. Granted we had the vegan version but I felt like I could've made that at home. It was just lackluster. Likewise was the platter of olives. I am an olive freak, but I felt like I could've presented the same dish by buying jars of my favorite olives and plating at my own dinner table. Not impressed. But the Paella Vegana was the coup de grace! We had it for two but you could share one. The dish was perfect on its balance of hearty veggies, rice, and seasoning. I was so impressed with the fullness of it all. I would go back for that and the salad and maybe even the potatas. My fellow diners had the non-vegan options. They started out with the Ensalada de Remolacha, which looked so beautiful and I'm told tasted just so. They had the Coles de Brusselas, which was gobbled up in quick order. They had the King Salmon a la Sarten, which looked really appetizing and I take it was filling. They also had the Paella de Marisco. What a great presentation of clams and shrimp and I don't know what else. My friends said it tasted very fishy, perhaps a bit much, but they took home their leftovers so it couldn't have been too much. Superb from start to finish. We were seated outside and our server, Haley, also happens to be the restaurant's general manager. As I'm sure we can all relate, there were high expectations for one of our first restaurant experiences after the lifting of most COVID restrictions. My husband ordered a magia lillet cocktail, which was excellent and very refreshing for the summer evening. My sparkling rosé thing was recommended by our server, and it was right on the money along with everything else she recommended. Even the sparkling mineral water ("Vichy Catalan") was interesting for far more than its novelty value. The meal began with a few excellent small plates: the foie gras was sublime. It had all the earthy, organ-y taste of great pâté but with a nice freshness that balanced it out. The Iberian ham croquetas estan merveillosas tambien. Patatas bravas were a great take on a classic tapas standby with crunchy exterior and delicately fluffy white interiors. We shared paella de mariscos for our main and that was also scrumptious. Can Font means "Open your wallet" in Spanish...jk, but fair warning! Menu shocker was that in order to get a spoonful of that revered paella from Barcelona, there is a minimum Two Order charge (not shown on the web menu) to fire up the paella pan, so you are $60 IN, minimum for the shellfish atop chewy pearls of rice dish. So not to be disappointed, we Opened our wallets and eagerly awaited (25 minutes) the Valencian specialty. Last minute reservation meant an 8:30 PM start. Famished, we ordered an $8 Catalan grilled bread tuna belly with roasted peppers and olives. It's a 2" airy charred bread stack with moist tuna fillet with....roasted peppers and olives. Good but not running back for more. Paella leaned on the salty side, creamy sauced rice with charred gold edges of cod (fish of day) but overdone for my liking. Shrimp is shelled maybe for US dining preference but shell and head on would be more authentic. Langoustines supposedly were in there and a few scant cartilage like pieces of cuttlefish. Worth $60? hella not. How about them Spanish Drinks? $15 for a Spanish sherried Manhattan is our priciest cocktail to date in P-town albeit a good strong balanced double, and $12 for a nice pour of drier, full bodied Rose'. Wine starts at $10/glass. Postre A 90% fail. Not only a tiny portion but pretty devoid of the billed pistachio flavor in either the ice cream or sparse 1/2" cubes of light and airy cake with some similar shaped marshmallows? Chocolate ganache ribbon had a creamy saltiness and divided the plate for presentation but this was $10 I definitely wish I had to spend over, or overspend. Looking at the Happy Hour, $9 is no breeze for cocktails and the dressed Catalan doorstep breads come down to $6. I'm saving for a different tapas house. Next. Of course, we know that fancy Pearl digs with dramatic b&w murals that lull you into wallet submission, tablecloth and attentive service are all part of the draw but the food is just not worth the drive into the warren of zero parking and elevated tab. read more

My family was in town visiting Portland and Can Font was recommended to us by some locals. We were excited to try it but got slightly delayed from our 8 pm reservation due to a super slow train blocking the only path to the restaurant. We tried to call to inform the restaurant but no one answered the phone, literally 10 times! That should've served as the first red flag that service was not up to par. Anyway we were soon seated 10 minutes after our reservation. The restaurant had a clean and modern vibe and we were expecting solid Spanish food to match. We started with a few appetizers but were quickly told by our server, Rachel, that they ran out of Bombas and another Croquetas we wanted to try. So we ended up settling for Pan con Tomate, Pulpo a la Plancha, Croquetas de Verduras and Boquerones Fritos. The Pan con Tomate was disappointing at best. The bread was limp and not toasted or charred, simply topped with fresh tomato pulp that was barely seasoned. Luckily the Boquerones Fritos or fried smelts with their crispy exterior and saltiness managed to add balance to the lifeless bread. There were a few fish, however, which weren't cleaned properly and still featured some guts inside I must warn you! Next came the Croquetas de Verdura which were fairly good featuring a creamy interior and crisp outer shell sitting atop dollops of greenish cilantro-shishito aioli. However the creaminess was rather one dimensional after a few bites. Lastly came the Pulpo- a gorgeous presentation of octopus tentacles artfully displayed with a smear of butterfly pea infused potato purée and roasted carrot bits. The octopus was tender and the dish was delicious overall. After these appetizers we ordered Paella Mar y Montana with pork and mussels. Our server asked us how many people would be sharing so we told her 4 of us, assuming she'd bring our 4 plates to share. The pan came out a short while later but we were very underwhelmed by the lack of seasoning. The pork was tender but the mussels were slightly crispy and overcooked, rendering it on the chewy side. The rice lacked the usual lively yellow saffron look we are so used to having for traditional paella and instead was just a drab brown color. But more importantly, where was all the flavor? The paella honestly just tasted like a very average, baseline fried-rice-wannabe with pork and mussels. For $34? Needless to say, we didn't finish our paella but decided to pack it to give to some homeless people on the way back to the hotel. We ended the night sharing a bite of Bizcocho de Chocolate. It was on the tiny side but did impart yummy melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolatey goodness. Our server asked us how it was and we replied it was the best part of the meal! Now if I were her, hearing this comment would have sent alarm bells ringing but she just shrugged and said that was a good ending to a meal. Clearly she didn't want to engage with us to really get any input on the rest of the food! When the bill arrived we were frankly surprised to be charged 4x $34 for the paella when the menu merely listed the price of paella as $34, just the way every other entree depicted had a price next to it (Halibut $34, Filet Mignon $48, etc). There was no footnote whatsoever that indicated this is the price per person? And, the server never explained this fact to us either? So this was rather a very sly strategy on pricing here which we are calling you out on, Can Font! It's pure and simple false advertising and you should be ashamed to deceive customers like that! Next time when we visit Portland and are in the mood for traditional Spanish food, we will elect to try your competitors instead. For flavors rated "meh" at best, unengaging customer service and deceptive pricing practices it'd be a wonder if you'll still be around in the years to come. read more

First of all the service is 100%, secondly the drinks and then the food and finally dessert - 5/5. The entire meal. We booked this with high expectations from the great ratings. When we arrived it was slow, not a huge deal since we ate pretty early. The sangria tasted more like a mulled wine. The jamon was not up to par for what you would expect from a Spanish restaurant - thick slices and cold. Our other appetizers arrived - octopus and vegetables, both were a miss, beautiful colors on the plate, but that ended once we took a bite, it lacked flavor and depth. We ordered two paellas, including the squid ink. The dishes tasted almost identical, and quite bland. The rice itself was undercooked and the seafood was over cooked. The cod was so dry my husband didn't even know it was fish at first. The mussels were so over cooked they were dry and cracked like burnt paper - there was no meat to consume. The manager lady is there to make sure everyone gets the absolute best experience. I strongly recommend sitting at the chefs counter to see how much pride these people take in being at Can Font and being a part of the food they serve!! 2. Food (most important). 1,000,000 / 10. Get tapas... a lot of them!! Get paella!! Everything is so good. One of my favs is the potatoes bravas MUST ADD BEEF! 3. Drinks? Their bartenders are all spirit enthusiasts and sommeliers. If you like to cheat sometimes (I do) bring your own bottle of wine, they'll cork it for $20, order a bunch of food, and your bill will at most be $88 like ours was. Enjoy :) We love coming here. The first few bites were heavenly. But the second and third servings were too salty. It was so salty that I'm taking most of it home and mixing it in with some plain rice. (The seafood was kind of overcooked too). BONE MARROW: If not done right, bone marrow can be very oily. It wasn't here. They managed to bring out the flavor without having the dish be too oily and thick. It was smart to combine it with the mushrooms, because it absorbs the flavor. The sauce is good because it's a little bit acidic. The bread is necessary as well -- you need something plain to accentuate the dish. The bread itself is high quality - a crispy crust and soft inside. Upscale dining in Portland -- think white tablecloths, elegant chairs, big wine glasses. Then I ask if we can sit and eat at the empty counter where the cooks are (and there are chairs!) No sorry. Later that meal we see a guy eating at the counter. So I get over that I'm spending $200 to sit by the door in an empty restaurant. And we order food. Tapas is the way to go it seems. We order. The salad was good and simple, but everything else just felt very average. Potatas Bravas was not like any other bravas I've had -- roasted and fried with "bravas" sauce over the top. Average. Octopus, shrimp and mushroom. Sautéed and just kind of salty & chewy, meh. Meatballs that were like any other meatball I've had. These sauces didn't even seem like real Spanish sauces. They just felt generic. Granted, I'm comparing this tapas place with other famed tapas restaurants in the country (like Chicago's treasured Cafe Iberico), but this wasn't even close.
