I have been wanting to visit Canal House Station for years, and I finally had my chance this past weekend. They were very sweet and happily accommodated our 7mo old daughter with a highchair (and buttered rigatoni!). Our reservation was a 6:15, and we were promptly seated in a beautiful part of the dining room. They had vases full of garlic scapes, peonies, hydrangeas. The decor and ambiance was beautiful. On each table, they had a small vase of fragrant herbs. The dinner is $95 and three courses. We chose from an entree list of duck confit, hake, and summer risotto. We chose the hake and duck to share, The first course was an herby salad with little gem lettuce, bacon, and crispy croutons. I love an herby salad so this was very delicious. The hake with hollandaise sauce and asparagus was good perfectly, it was a really delicious, plump piece of fish. The Eaton mess for dessert was fabulous. Berry preserves, berry sorbet, vanilla ice cream, and merengue. A winning combination. I definitely recommend as a destination restaurant along this cute Delaware River town. PS it's BYOB! read more

We were visiting the area and I was excited to eat at this restaurant to celebrate my birthday. The space is lovely, the servers attentive and considerate. The food, however, was something of a disappointment; for a restaurant with this many accolades and a very small menu, I would not expect the confit to be dried out or the sole to be dry and mealy. This is truly one of the most special places in NJ. Melissa and Christopher are so talented....I am a big fan of their cookbooks and have been following them for years. They purchased the Milford train station and renovated it so beautifully. The artwork and furnishings/lighting is so beautiful. We have been here in the summer, when the garden is plentiful, and today, a cold December early Sunday dinner of braised beef cheeks in Cote du Rhone....a chestnut chocolate cake.....pork terrine and deviled eggs and a beautiful chicory (Castelfranco) salad with other treats....... My husband and I had the lunar dinner experience at Canal house. Food was great and setting was lovely.

What an amazing experience! Met a group of friends here recently for the Sunday Dinner (fixed menu and price) and fell in love with the food, the atmosphere and the staff. The Food! I was hesitant about some items on the fixed menu because I had never eaten them before. Got over myself and found that all food when fresh and prepared well by the experts here is great. All dishes (even the pate, my worry) were soooo good! The flavors were excellent as well as texture and presentation...all on point. Also, each course was about the right amount. The staff: low key, friendly service but present throughout the meal to handle any type of request. I highly recommend this gem for a special experience, especially with a group (small or large) that really enjoy fine food. read more

Food: Absolutely delicious. I walked in thinking I accidentally walked right into the kitchen however they have a open kitchen sitting area that allows you to be super close to where the cooking action occurs which I think is so mesmerizing and makes the experience all the more amazing! A party of 4, including myself, came here for the brunch option of crispy bacon and endless piles of buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes were absolutely delicious and fluffy! Even though we came for breakfast, we ended up eating some lunch specials too such as the fried chicken on a brioche bun w/ an egg and green salad, and of course dessert too, which was the apple tart! All of the dishes were spectacular and we were already making plans to come back for dinner! Cost: The endless piles of pancake was $13. Very very generous and a great price for the quality you're getting as well. The cost of the other dishes were extremely well priced and I personally thought the quality of the food went above and beyond what you were paying. Environment: Absolutely beautiful open kitchen sitting area. I know they have tables outside and I think further inside the building however I had the pleasure of being able to sit just a couple feet away from all the magic that was happening! Service: Great service, very kind and we never felt like we were being rushed out. Chris and Melissa were very welcoming and Chris came around and checked up on us and enjoyed our 'healthy appetite' haha! Uniqueness: This place is definitely unique. The food is made with love and care here and those feelings definitely gets translated to the food that is served which is all so very delicious! Very few places wow me the way Canal House Station has. We must have driven by this place so many times and never knew it was here. It wasn't until we saw them up for James Beard award that we found out about it. Housed in a train station from an era long gone, the building is so well kept and appointed on the inside. The restaurant is broken up into a couple dining rooms with a large kitchen prep area visible to the public as you enter. We went for lunch. We ordered one of everything on the menu...the Deviled Egg appetizer, Cod and Smoked Whitefish chowder, Green Salad with Vinaigrette and Brie, Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich, Panko Fish sandwich, Grilled Ham and Gruyere sandwich, and the ice cream dessert. The only item we did not order was the Apple Sausage/Gruyere omelette that was a lunch special. The Deviled Eggs were delicious. Topped with Anchovies (more a pickled anchovy, not the super salty italian style) and smoked salmon. Creamy egg yolk mixture inside a tender egg white, just the right flavors, not too sour, not too salty. The Green Salad was a bed of radicchio and Belgian endive with a light vinaigrette. By itself it would have been a little bland, but it's served with a slice of dark bread with a generous slab of good quality brie cheese. A bite of the greens mixed with a bite of the brie and bread...just about perfect. The cod and smoked whitefish chowder was maybe the best thing we ate. Flaky cod with slightly smoked whitefish made for a good combination with the bacon and chunks of potato in a creamy soup that tasted so light, it was hard to believe it was a chowder. The sandwiches were great. The panko crusted cod sandwich was a nice fillet, the crispy chicken was a boned out thigh in a crispy coating, and the grilled ham and Gruyere was a great nod to the classic hand and cheese melt. The chicken and fish were on brioche buns which were perfect. All the sandwiches came with Deviled Eggs as a side. Even better. The ice cream dessert was amazing, creamy vanilla bean ice cream and a slightly bitter dark chocolate were very complimentary. There was not one unsatisfactory bite in this whole lunch. My only disappointment was that the Country Pate wasnt on the menu for lunch...I was told the menu changes daily...Nice. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the service, table setting, and space inside were top notch. My only suggestion is that the music can be a bit loud if you're near a speaker...but you can turn it down. Here's the kicker...1 of everything on the printed menu....the bill was about $87. Are you kidding me? We had enough food for at least 4 people. We're coming for dinner soon, but if it's anywhere near the lunch experience, this is going to be my favorite place for food. The clean open kitchen, the thoughtfully decorated dining rooms, well placed flowers and fresh fruit or vegetables arranged to be beautiful all give the feeling that you are leaving the business of your life behind and entering into a space where quality and beauty reign. I've eaten here four meals now, and have enjoyed every visit. Just moved nearby and heard so much about this establishment, thought we would give it a try. What a treat! Beautiful environment, pleasant and attentive service and even better cuisine! We were at the Spanish menu dinner and didn't disappoint! Tastefully prepared prawns to start, excellent gazpacho followed by duck and chorizo paella with peas. Delicious! 10 Stars! We made a last minute decision to go to lunch. My daughter and I arrived about 15 minutes early but was seated immediately. As you enter the restaurant, amazing smells waft over you... making our mouths water. We shared the Chicken Soup for our appetizer. That was a huge mistake ... wish we didn't because it was soooo good! Very light, tasty and perfect for a cold winter's day. We also ordered the Fried Chicken on Brioche Bun. A Classic! Probably the best fried chicken sandwich you could have. We had the Gravlax on toast. I love the bread, crunchy and perfect with the lox. For dessert we had all 3 offered. Not that we were hungry but because it all sounded great We had 3 scoops Ice cream -: vanilla and hazelnut. I am obsessed with hazelnut gelato and seriously overdose on it whenever I visit Italy. I think I have a new obsession. That hazelnut ice-cream was just crazy good! Had the Almond Cake with Tangerine also the apple cake Both we loved! If you like almonds, this cake is light with the right hint of almond extract -- not overpowering! The Apple cake was beautiful to look at and eat. It was soft, crunchy on the bottom with apples on top and a hint of salt and lemon When asked how the food was -- our response was 10 stars! This is one of the best kept secrets! I never would have heard about it had we not been staying at the Bridgeton House (B&B across the bridge). The restaurant is beautiful. We made reservations for lunch when we arrived on Friday and for Sunday dinner before heading back home. Both experiences were different, but equally great. Incredible 5 course meal in an artfully decorated, beautiful old train station right on the Delaware. Id only learned of its existence this past week when I saw it in the 2019 James Beard nominations for outstanding restaurant. It was outstanding indeed-- from the friendly staff, to the warm, welcoming inside with freshly picked flowers in each room, to the delicious food. All was wonderful. We hope they win. We visited today for lunch (aka Sunday Dinner). Menu is prix fix-- you don't choose anything. The food tasted especially fresh. Thé chocolate tart was amazing. I thought I'd tasted a hint of bergamot. So delicious!!! We are a bit far from the restaurant, but will certainly be back some day. read more

We dropped in for lunch today. I am not someone who typically does reviews but I feel compelled to give this a rave. The vibe of the restaurant was low-key with a rustic atmosphere/elegance and Beatles music playing in the background. The service was professional and friendly. The food appeared to be simple - it is, in fact, prepared with a deft touch - lovingly prepared and stunning to look at. And it tasted great. The deviled eggs with anchovies and smoked salmon appetizer were "to die for." I asked to take some photos and I felt welcome. We had a fabulous experience having Sunday dinner at Canal House Station! The ambiance was elegant and romantic in a beautiful venue! The service was top notch... gracious, attentive, not intrusive. And the food was absolute deliciousness in each bite and the plating and presentation were spectacular! This is a top restaurant anywhere and especially appreciated in New Jersey. Nice ambiance, good service, firiendly, but the dinner did not live up to the hype, especially the entree. Our heirloom tomato & toast was tasty, however, the toast was shoeleather tough - could barely cut it. I was afraid it might go flying off the plate. We were surprised the entree was turkey. It arrived as three or four ~1/4" or so slabs of cold breast. Could have been from any deli! The sauce was just ok. The pesto pasta was good. Desert was nothing special. Not worth $95 per person! In our case $190. (We are good tippers and still left 30% - not the servers' fault.) We could have spent that and had several wonderful meals at many of the great restaurants in the area along either side of the river. read more

My birthday dinner yesterday (prix fixe) was one of the best meals I have ever eaten! We spent a leisurely two hours savoring each course (kitchen even sent out complimentary fried zucchini blossoms). It is no surprise that the chef owners have written several cookbooks- they are masters of the craft. This restaurant is in a league of its own in this area of PA/NJ. They offer an exceptional culinary experience in a beautiful historic setting (at a very reasonable price point). We cannot wait to go back! read more

The canal house station was what I was expecting in the sense of getting fresh courses, each spaced out generously. My dining experience was quite long, as expected, so I would go only with lots of time on hand (2+ hours). The restaurant was beautiful, and the drive to it was also nice, passing mostly farming houses and large plots of land. It really gave off the family feel which I love and the workers kept traditional waiting practices which also added to the antique atmosphere. All of the food was great and incredibly fresh tasting. The staff were all so kind and engaging and really helped make the experience special. Overall, I can't really find anything to complain about besides the length of the meal, but I was prepared for waiting so it was no big deal. Would definitely go again if Im in the area, was an overall great experience! read more

The decor (which would become a theme for our entire experience) was minimal yet divine. That's just Melissa and Christopher -- they make the ordinary, extraordinary. Onto the menu. Unable to choose just one, our party of three split five dishes. We ordered the French onion soup, endive salad, homemade pate (who knows how to make that?!), fried chicken sandwich, and the polenta + porchetta. Without giving a detailed review of each item, lets just say that each mouthwatering dish was as tasty as it was visually appealing. We quite literally wanted to lick each dish clean.
