I was on a pleasure trip in the area. My wife found this place for breakfast. What a find. This is a meeting place back in time. We got there around 9:30. It was very busy. Everybody knows everybody here. They were all chatting and laughing amongst their own table and friends sitting at the next table. I sat at the counter because there was no seating in the main area. I waited, but it was busy. Then, someone came up and poured me a cup of coffee. I asked her if I could place an order. She said she can't take orders. I thank her. It turned out she was one of the customers. I later walked over to thank her (her name was Sherry, I found out later) for the coffee, she said, 'We help each other out over here'. The food, I think the owner forgot to change the price of food on their menu here since the 70s. Maybe because of the number of people in the restaurant. It does take a while for the food to come out. So, if you are in a hurry. This may not be the place for you. I think the cook is the owner. You can't hurry love. My wife ordered the western omelette, I had the sausage with a short stack. The food was very good. If you want to travel back in time. This is the place for you! read more

You will find breakfast costs at prices you used to pay in the 80's and just as good. For about $5, it's a great deal for bacon, eggs and hash brown with coffee. The area is absolutely beautiful as Milford sits on the Delaware River near nature and quiet, yet in inviting surrounding with an old steel bridge leading to PA just on the other side. This is a local local local joint with no frills attitude, loosely put together cups from various brands but what appears to be a loyal local clientele and occasional travelers that pass through. You will experience rural North East America here. Average age of the customers is in their 60s and 70s and older. But the experience is unique and hence the five stars. The prices also are unbelievably low. If I lived here I know I'd be a regular as well. What a little gem of a breakfast spot! The cups/mugs don't match. Neither does the silverware. The decor is from the 70's? But that may be the last time I saw prices on a menu so low. I had a cheese omelette platter and I wanted to try the pancakes, so I ordered a short stack. It was the biggest short stack I ever saw. We were a party of 8. Everything was cooked by one woman busy at the grill. Everything came out correct. Everyone liked their food. The service was friendly. It was cash only. My omelette platter (with toast and potatoes) and a short stack of pancakes and a coffee with refills was less than $8. Oh, I'll be back. Highly recommend! read more

4 stars because my expectations were realistic. This is the one of the most unique dining experiences I've ever had. I had been hearing about this place for years, and we FINALLY got to check it out. I don't even know how to describe it that would make my review different from the others. it's hardly even a restaurant. It's more like somebody's big kitchen and dining room. On the morning that we were there, it was Ma, a server and a cook. That's it. I had to laugh at just how no-frills this place is. The plates are all mismatched. The coffee mugs were those free promotional things that companies give away. I think mine said 'Pfizer'. LOL. There is no huge kitchen. There's a cooking area that is plainly visible when you are checking out. They have a fridge, a stove, a grill. The place really is full of locals, and I do mean FULL. The parking lot is jammed, the place itself is jammed. And it's really small, not much elbow room. Our breakfast was okay. It was unremarkable, not really any better or any worse than anything we would have ordered at a diner or restaurant. Except the sausage. There are two kinds of sausage: there is the flavorful, fatty kind that has lots of texture, and there is the bland kind that has no texture. They serve the bland one :-/ Oh....and another reviewer was spot on...the coffee really is awful lol. It was so stale, I couldn't even take a refill. Service was great. Ma is so friendly, and the young woman who was also serving, was friendly. I didn't have any issues with wait times for anything, so maybe I was there on a good day? After we left, I had to laugh out loud. Breakfast for 2 was less than I would spend on myself at McD's. I might return, although the purpose of the visit was more to experience it for the place itself, than as a culinary experience. Having experienced it, I don't feel compelled to go back. My advice is that you experience it for the experience itself. Try something that is no frills. Ignore the snobs that were expecting silver utensils, cloth napkins and a gold hand painted sign on the front porch. Just go and relax. read more

I went here with my family as a kid and teen once a week. I still go once every month or two. It's wonderful! Friendly staff and great food for insanely great prices!! This is popular for high school kids in my area who if already late to school will stop here first since it's the same punishment to be 5 mins late or 2 hours late :p. Warm, friendly and relaxed. Great down home food at unbelievable prices. MA-De's is the last holdout of the "true diners." The staff and most of the customers are locals (many are multigenerational) and greet each other cheerily as they shuffle in and out. It's like walking into a living, breathing Rockwell. This is not an IHOP or Perkins. It is a classic local eatery only open for breakfast and early lunch and is utterly without pretense. I used to live a few blocks away from this well-loved local icon and when my brother and his wife came to visit us from New York for weekends in this NJ backwater, they always insisted on going to Ma De's for breakfast, which basically turned into an all-morning event. It is probably the most casual place to have breakfast other than your own kitchen. The decor is dated and reminds one of tacky paneled rec rooms from the 1960's and I recently enjoyed a leisurely breakfast here with my daughter who has been an avid fan since childhood. The service is always friendly and seldom swift. It started out as a family cafe owned and run by a brother and sister and the cooking area really is very much like your grandmother's kitchen, with each meal being cooked slowly by a single cook - there isn't room for more than one cook. The staff has great longevity - as do the customers. On any given day, 80-90% of the customers have been coming there for decades, and newcomers do stick out a bit as unfamiliar faces in a crowded dining room, but it's not one of those stare-down situations. If you come alone and sit at the counter, your neighbor is likely to strike up a conversation (usually about the slow service). It's a great place for people-watching. Diners sometimes have to wait for a table but can usually find a seat at the counter. The tables are squeezed cheek by jowl and many of the regulars are seniors who really appreciate the affordability of the no-frills menu. With all those hearing aids, it can be a pretty noisy dining experience and you probably don't want to talk about anything too personal that you wouldn't want splashed across the front page of the newspaper. I have no complaints about the food. With so little kitchen space, food can't sit around long enough to get cold so I always enjoy hot food there and the prices are truly in the bargain category. A lot of the regulars bus their own plates afterwards and some even go behind the counter to refill their coffee when the wait staff is having a hectic morning - that's how casual it is. The only people who are irritated by the slow service are newcomers who don't know better and have plans for the rest of their day, but if you want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and your company, no one does it better. The strawberry waffles seem to be a favorite so I will have to try those next time. And I think it really tells you something that a lot of other eateries in Milford have come and gone over the years while Ma-De's has endured. read more

I walked into this diner with my girlfriend and her daughter and felt more out of place here than the time we walked through harlem at night. EVeryone turned and looked at us and stared. This howerever was just a minor issue. We sat and had to ASK for menu's. apparently everyone has ESP here. The one saving grace of my meal? large bottles of FRANKS RED HOT on the counter. I got eggs overeasy and toast, my Fiance got a waffle with strawberry's. Her daugther got SCRAMBLED EGGS! it took 45 minutes for the food to come out! It would have been one thing had we ordered Black Forest Truffle Waffles with Bavarian Chocolate with a side of Columbian Boar Bacon. But no. I wanted fuckin' eggs and goddamn bacon. Your waitress doesnt even take your money to pay. You have to go tell teh cook who then rings you up. Had my Fiance not been watching me like a hawk I would have just left and not paid. Never have I laughed so much while enjoying a meal! This place is like something out of a seventies movie. Its like you are walking into a house that smells like your mom is cooking you breakfast on a Saturday morning before you watch cartoons. The customers know each other and talk to you like they have known you for years, There is a group of ladies that make cakes for themselves, and then just give it to other diners like they are your grandma! This is a chat shop, NOT a diner; keep this in mind when you have plans for later in the morning- get in before 8 am if you want quick, no wait service. We camp about 15 minutes away and this is the ONLY place out of all Milford, Frenchtown, and Upper Black Eddy where we get breakfast. Do not come to Ma De's expecting a meal that is prepared and plated like you are eating at a five star restaurant, as this is like eating in your mother's kitchen when all your friends are over. Yes you probably have to get your own menus, yes you have to go to the register and tell them what you got, and you might even have to wipe off your own table but where else can you get that?! I think it is perfect for a small town. Everyone knows each other and if you have been there enough times, you can even serve yourself your own coffee! They are open 365 days a year and it is probably the cheapest meal out you will ever have!
