No frills higher end optical store with a very knowledgeable, skilled and patient optometrist. They have attentive staff and all the brands ranging from $100 frames to Tom Ford. I'd been coming here for a few years, but my plan recently dropped vision coverage so I went to get an exam from my new opthalmologist to go online to get glasses from one of those e-commerce companies. The glasses didnt work for me and I had to return them. It was so bad it made me willing to pay out of pocket just to get checked by Dr. Mui. My prescription comes out perfect each time and he carries a very wide range of frames for a lot of budgets. Pretty awful experience. Overall, I was looking for a set of glasses to fit my budget, and I got the run around and was shown expensive overly priced frames and all sorts of additional lenses that wouldn't really make much of a difference but were simply additional add ons. All the while I couldn't help but feel that I'm doing business with some type of crime syndicate. Place is very expensive, but they try to pawn it off as exceptional service and weird boutique practice. For goddsakes they don't even have the standard machine to screen and test for glaucoma which all the critics have said. Just a really negative experience from customer service to my overall examination. The optometry place is EXTREMELY predatory with regards to pricing (which they don't disclose), and you have the good fortune of knowing that there are many other optometry places conveniently located which are not as price gouging. Make sure you know your insurance plan coverage. Even then, they go beyond range bound prices what your insurance plan will cover. But it isn't just the overpriced minimal services they don't seem to be embarassed about. They offer NO screening for glaucoma, which is pretty much standard at every OPTOMETRY office for your eye visit. The optometrist is so-so more of a talker than a professional. The opticians/associates are the worst...they really push overpriced frames and add ons for lenses that you don't really need. Just be really wary about what goes on in there !!! You would think that they would not pull their shyster/gangster behavior on those local to the area, but they do. Definitely NO recommendation for families seeking optical care. And for those new to NYC. Despite it being a walk-in on the street and convenient...there are many other more affordable optometry places once you leave Canal Street. For those who do not have any insurance, Canal Street Optical is a fair place to do business with as they are fair about selling you glasses as they can give you a discount on frames. Lenses and contacts might be another matter. However, if you DO have insurance, Always ALWAYS check your medical AND vision plan. I have Aetna as my medical coverage and they provide Vision Discounts. Lo and behold, Canal Street Optical is a participating location so yay. I also have VSP for my vision coverage. When I arrived, I showed them both my Aetna and VSP information (just a print out from their website as you don't necessarily have to carry a membership card for services: they look things up via your Social Security number). Anyhow to be honest I wasn't sure how I should proceed in trying a good deal as when dealing with a lot of Asian businesses, they would generally try to not have you pay a co-pay and instead stick it the most to the insurance. Therefore I proceeded with the transaction without the Aetna Vision Discount. Without going into the numbers in detail, the amount it'd cost me for my glasses would have been $418. With VSP and some bargaining, $340 with an estimated $150-$180 back from VSP. With Aetna Vision Discounts, VSP, and no bargaining $327.80 with an estimated $157.60 back from VSP. Did I get cheated? No, not really - particularly with the quality of service I recieve from Tony. When the door in the back is closed, you'll always get a professional recommendation on what type of eyewear and/ or corrective vision you require. read more

Would not recommend. Some of the Staff were not friendly, Optometrist was ok. Equipment is not state of the art. Exam only given for eyes for fitting of lens. No test for glaucoma ,union exam also pays for glaucoma test as well, etc. Every other place I been too they performed test. I purchased a pair of progressive eyeglasses from here a year and a half ago. I had an eye examination with Dr. Tony Mui for reading glasses. He was very honest with me. He told me that my prescription for both nearsightedness and farsightedness was so light that I did not need to get a pair of glasses. He warned me that my eyes would adjust to the new prescription. However, since I do a lot of work on the computer I decided to get glasses with the blue light blocking feature. I was previously suffering from eyestrain and eye pain from computer work. After I started using these glasses the pain disappeared. The clerk helped me pick out a frame shape that was suitable for my face. She gave me an honest opinion about the different frames that I tried on. She told me what looked good and what didn't. I bought a pair of Dolce & Gabbana glasses. The quality is excellent. The price for the progressive (bifocals) was very reasonable. I am happy with my purchase. read more

1.5 to 2 stars My family and I have been going to Canal St Optical to see Tony for many years. However our last few transactions have been, to say the least disappointing. Hoping for a change in glasses styles, my sister visited Canal St Optical back in February. The associate helped her choose these beautiful Ray Ban glasses frames (which she adored) which left her eager to start wearing them. Fast forward 3 weeks; after picking up her glasses and having them adjusted to fit her face she left the store noticing her vision was a bit blurry. She played it off, being assured by the associate that this was just the adjustment period. However after wearing them for a few more days and still experiencing blurry vision (which led to a few headaches), she went back to Canal St Optical to see if they could figure out what was wrong. Long story short, it turns out that the optical center for the lenses were not in line with her line of vision and how the glasses fit on her face. When asked if there was anything Tony and his associates can do for her, she was told that there was nothing they could do (seems like since she already paid in full, they didn't care too much about fixing the problem). She doesn't recall which associate she spoke to, but that the associate was neither apologetic or empathetic to the fact that my sister could not wear these glasses for longer than 1 hour before getting a headache. Furthermore, she remembers that the associate had made a rather snarky remark 'next time you should just choose smaller frames.' Needless to say, she left the store close to tears. After 3 years of saving up money to purchase new frames, she was left with a dent in her wallet and essentially unusable glasses. Our family lives in Queens and we make the effort to visit Canal St Optical in Chinatown as we are long time customers and have seen Tony for many years. We are currently re-examining if our loyalty to small businesses like Canal St Optical and Tony is worth the effort if their associates are not in line with ensuring the happiness and health of their patients/clients. Lastly, my father has recently purchased a pair of glasses from them (Early Feb). He was quoted a 2 week wait time. After not hearing from them for 3 weeks. He reached out via phone and was told there was an error in the order and he would have to wait another week. He called 2 weeks later to check and see if his glasses were ready for pick up and was told again that there was another error with his order. While I know COVID happened and they are now temporarily closed, he doesn't know when he'll get his glasses (if at all). read more

This is my 2nd visit to this place and this time around I was not pleased with how they handle my coverage options. This review is about the optical store employees, not the doctor. Last time I came to the store I used a union voucher. I found out later that my health insurance also cover frames and lens cost so I had 2 options this time. I thought they would help me figure out which of the two I could save money on, or if possible use both to get 2 pairs of glasses. They happily took both items from to me "check" the coverage. First they told me my health insurance only covers $25, which is WAY less than what my insurance policy stated. They said I could only use one, so I had to pick. I was still trying to tell them that they're wrong about my health insurance coverage because I looked it up before. They later came back and blatantly told me they could only take my voucher. Their excuse was since I used the voucher last time, this is the only thing they can take and can't switch to something else. It's complete nonsense that they can't use another option because people's coverage change all the time. I'm not an expert on how insurances and whatnot work at an optical store, but I honestly believe they intentionally made up this "rule" so that I had to paid more out of pocket for the glasses. I know what my insurance covers and they falsely claim something else. The whole interaction was super shady and left a horrible impression on me, enough to get me to write an actual review... DC 37 optical insurance covered less than $30 and has to fill out a form before going to see doctor, I didn't do it and pay out of my own pocket, practically I pay my own eye glasses. The service is good, they explain why I should need this kind of glasses or not, they gave me options this and that, because I just need a reading glass and so I did not do any other testing on my eyes, the doctor is very professional. read more

I've been coming to Canal Street Optical for a couple of years now and it has by far the best service and optical selection you can find. Dr. Tony Mui is extremely personable and takes the time to explain in detail your prescription. He's patient to answer any questions I had. His staff is also helpful, attentive and friendly! They are now open and will check your temperature prior to you entering. They are following all of the guidelines per CDC, as well as wipe down all the machines prior to use, so I was very comfortable in my visit. read more

I went in today to redeem my DC 37 optical voucher and the staff were very helpful in helping me set everything up. There wasn't a whole lot of other customers but service was very responsive. All the staff members speak English pretty well so that was a plus. I was able to get all three services covered by my voucher: eye exam, frames, and lenses. Eye exam: Dr. Mui was extremely helpful in finding out what the best prescription was for me and it was very quick and easy process. He was very nice and easy to talk to. Frames: There's only a limited amount of frames you can choose from with the voucher. They aren't designer frames by any means but I was able to find one that I was happy with. Most of the frames were made of plastic with thick borders causing them to have a very "hipster" look. Even if you don't like the selection of free frames, they allow you to use the voucher as a $20 discount towards your purchase of a different frame. Lenses: The voucher only covers regular lenses without any sort of modifications. If you would like to modify your lenses in any way, then you would have to pay for it yourself. For me, I requested transition lenses (my first time getting transition lenses). They were happy to get it done for me and were very helpful to ensure I get the right ones. They told me that the regular (non-thin) transition lenses would cost me $100, which I think is fairly reasonable. Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the service I was provided and the entire process took less than 30 minutes. Because of the transition lenses, my total bill was $100, but if you don't want any special modifications then everything would be free. They told me to come back in 10 days to pickup my new pair of glasses, so I'll provide an update to my review when I get it. I would highly recommend anyone looking to redeem an optical voucher from the union to come here. read more

My mom purchased a very expensive pair of Versace glasses here only 6 months ago when a rhinestone popped out. We returned to see if any of the staff could, or knew whom to contact, to replace the fallen gem. We received practically NO help at all. The first guy roughly examined the glasses, told us he would need to consult his colleague, and returned to say, quite indifferently, that nothing could be done. Really? Do you mean to tell me that there is zero warranty on this pair of designer glasses? What a load of crock. He said that nothing about the frame itself is damaged so they can't send it in for repair or a replacement. At this point, my mom was seriously considering breaking her glasses in half but another guy came along and told us he'll see what he can do. No guarantees. They'll let us know in 2 weeks... Word to the wise: go somewhere else that will actually provide you SERVICE, not this place that is clearly only interested in making sales (aka taking your money) read more

WELL WELL, so that's what happened to me. I went to this place to get contact lenses and the salesperson didn't even mention there was an examination fee. When i tried to get more detail information and pricing on the contacts, the lady was inpatient. NO HELP NO SERVICE AT ALL. After i finished the examination, I paid one year supply of contact lenses which was almost like twice priced compare to other places. And I waited more than 3 WEEKS to get the lenses!!! TH ATS 3 WEEKS!!, when i tried to call the store , the only thing they told me was that the shipment was delayed. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE TO WAIT 3 WEEKS to get lenses. THATS INSANE!!!!
