Stopped in as I was attending a trade show at the WI center, and even though I'm local I wanted to change up my work day. Upon entering Canary it was already loud and chaotic in a sorts, similar to an overcrowded bird cage(if we want to keep on theme). There were no open seats and I honestly didn't know how to order a drink nor who worked there. Luckily someone had just left and I grabbed their table. I took their dirty dishes to the counter to try and figure out how this place worked. A man behind the counter who was actively working on making a beverage approached me and took my order. I didn't pay, but he ended up bring me my drink, food order, and bakery item. I had to ask him for water and silverware/napkins because they had none to help yourself to-- which is an area for improvement, especially with what appeared to be only one employee working. I inquired about the wifi password, the password worked but the wifi did not! I brought this up to the same guy who took my order and he said: yeah a lot of people are on it now, try restarting your computer.....well let's just say that was not a very productive morning. Surrounding me were several people on live Zoom/Teams Meetings in addition to a 5 person group meeting which all contributed to the loud noise level. So I basically took in the plants and enjoyed my coffee and food. Expect for the muffin was a waste of calories, it was super dry. They do not have matcha, which I found interesting for a coffee shop of their caliber. I had to go back to counter to pay for my items, which I found extremely odd for todays mannerisms-- given I didn't receive table service. I don't think I'll find myself returning here to work ever again, only for chatting and coffee. It's nice to have another option for visitors to the area given the amount hotels nearby, but I guess as a local I'll stay away. read more

Came for the avocado tartine. They were already out by 10:45. I got the last of the cold brew. Settled for the ham and gruyere tartine but it was a disgrace. Thick cuts of cold ham and unmelted cheese with too much mustard. When asked about having it toasted properly was dismissed and told the bread was. It was very lightly toasted. Especially displeased since waiting for it took forever (why since it wasn't properly cooked), so no lunch break and starving. Prices were also a bit too high, service slow and a lot of dirty tables. read more

Great little coffee spot in downtown. When I stopped in late morning on a Friday, they were slammed. A line to the door and just 2 people working. They worked as fast as they could but the line moved slow. Once I got my cofffee, a brewed cup - black. It was very good. If I had more time in town, I would have returned. read more

I came here to switch up my study spot since I am back to studying for my second licensing exam. DRINK: I ordered a 12oz caramel latte (total of $6.75). The latte art is gorgeous. The caramel was lightly mixed in and the drink wasn't too sweet. I really liked my order. SERVICE: Overall, the service was prompt. Of note, for coffee shop studying, you will need to purchase something. Luckily, everything here is very affordable. The staff was super friendly. PARKING: I paid $7 to park in one of the lots right by the coffee shop. Unfortunately, free street parking was limited. WIFI: This is where Canary lost stars. The WiFi connection was horrible. I was only there for an hour before I got kicked off the network and couldn't get back in. It made my studying extremely difficult. I ended up having to go back home for more reliable WiFi. VIBE: Around 10 AM, the coffee shop got way too noisy. I had to bust out my headphones and that didn't really help. This is more of a social coffee shop rather than a study spot. read more

Cute hipster coffee shop near the Hyatt and Fairfield Inn. Highly suggest skipping the local Starbucks and trying this place. The Milky Banana drink was unique, and packed with Banana flavor. The Egg Nog drink tasted good, but was a very small serving for the price. I wish the sizes were listed on the menu because I was a bit shocked with the price for what I got. Caramel cappuccino was very good. Nice and frothy. Definitely recommend you check the place out, but ask questions to make sure you get what you want. I was visiting from out of town and needed a spot to do some work. This place had good reviews and was close to my hotel so checked it out. I got a cold brew and lemon poppyseed scone. Both were great! The baristas were friendly and it had ample work space. I sat at the bar area so I had more space. The only thing I didn't like about the space was being solicited for money while in there. I can appreciate that they give a free cup of coffee to the homeless, but I personally don't like being asked for money when I'm a place of business. Just not a good look. It's happened to me in coffee shops in Chicago before and been handled more appropriately by telling the person that solicitation isn't allowed at the business. Other than that, a great little coffee shop and I'd likely stop in again if I find myself in MKE again! read more

Went here due to the good reviews, but was met with awkwardness from entering: 1-not clear, very confusing on where to go order?... the front, the back, where?.. there was no partition or clear area to go... there were other customers there adding to the confusion.. and they didnt appear to know what to do either. 2-awful, lousy music playing.. idk who picked the selection but it was horrible. worse than emo. downright depressing sounding actually. 3-place was dirty... tables w/ crumbs & remnants from previous customers. messy everywhere including behind the counter where food preparation was happening. And now; on with the critique. so i finally got to place my order w/ the young lady and she informed me they just ran out of regular coffee and she could do me a pour over if i had time (which i begrudgingly & hesitsntly accepted.. but i figured i was already here so what the hay...) what kind of coffee shop runs out of drip coffee?... that is something you should plan for, monitor, and have a thermos/dispenser on standby/ready to go... professional outfits operate this way. but; i hoped the pour over wouldve knocked my socks off, and everything would be fine. And Furthermore the staff was painfully slow, and clearly overwhelmed. it was hard to watch. Canary is a great spot downtown. I met someone for coffee and they suggested the spot - I had never heard of Canary before then. The space is bright and modern, it's inviting and would be a great place to work from or to study. They have a great menu of coffee, tea, and other beverages along with baked goods. I opted for hot chocolate on a rainy day and loved the richness and the beautiful latte art. The barista was very upbeat and thoughtful - he helped me conspire to ensure the person I met for coffee didn't pay for her own! They are one of the few that open past 2PM so you could definitely get some work done in the PM hours if you needed. The food is incredible for a coffee shop; I love the ham and cheese tartine (when it's actually available). The coffee is solid, not life-changing, but good enough to keep me coming back. The service is very hit-or-miss; certain baristas attempt to build rapport while others charge your card as soon as they can then walk away nearly immediately to chat with co-workers (this seems to occur regardless of how busy things are). Ambiance is generally speaking aesthetically pleasing for the most part; however, the music is roaring at 9 AM. It's a coffee shop, not a club; I should be able to clearly hear my friend/acquaintance who is just across the table from me. I can barely hear myself think some days, depending on which barista is DJing with their playlists. With regard to the tartine comment: I visited this cafe three times, all of which were within 2 hours of being open. I was only able to successfully order the highly recommended ham and cheese tartine ONCE. The first time it was unavailable was because they did not have the cheese; the second time was because they didn't have bread . Morning inventory management is sort of paramount to a coffee shop's survival; it should quite literally be your bread and butter. Finally, this is a very pricey coffee shop. A latte and "specialty" croissant cost me about $16. This is a bit absurd, even if it was a solid 8/10 breakfast. The overall lack of continuity is what is having me teeter between a 3.5-4. I hope they actually listen to feedback and learn to be better. Interval already lost my business for quality decline; I would hate to never want to patron this business again. read more

We popped in while in the city and I fell in love with this place! It is pricey, so I wouldn't consider it as a daily shop stop but it's a great treat to have! The French toast latte was special with the torched sugar on top. I also had the cherry hand pie. If you choose to skip the hand pies, that's a mistake! They're wonderful and sell quick! One thing I thought was such a unique idea was the fact that the barista makes the coffee in front of you like a bartender if you're at the bar. The coffee here was amazing, but service and system of how they go about things seriously needs some work. Again, absolutely delicious coffee, but they don't make you pay until you leave the shop - which sounds like a cool idea at first until you want to leave and there's like 15 people in line so you have to wait 20 min to pay your tab... they also pride themselves on serving you your coffee once you sit down, and this sounds again like a cool idea, but because they don't take down names for orders or anything they end up not knowing who ordered what and who to deliver the coffees too. So the product is really good, but the service really needs help and organization. Like others have commented too, there's no bussing station or anything which gets odd and messy when it's busy. read more

I love this place. It's so cute, in a quirky-trendy way. But it's also a fun and comfortable place to have a coffee drink. I love all the little brightly-colored tables, and the kind of techno-flavored music (I wouldn't love it everywhere but it works here.) I like the location, smack dab in the Third Ward but also tucked away. I like the friendly people behind the counter. I have not tried the baked goods but think I would probably like those as well. The coffee shop is always warm and welcoming. They have the usual menu of coffee and a few non-coffee drinks, along with some seasonal specials. The main menu is on the wall and then the specials are on the little laminated menu. I recommend the seasonal drinks. Even the pumpkin pie spice latte, that most "basic" of seasonal drinks, is elevated and doesn't taste prepackaged. Canary would be a good place to get some work done or do some (social-distanced) socializing. I make a regular stop when I do downtown errands. read more

The barista was handsome and friendly, though he wasn't particularly helpful when I asked between a choice of two drinks would be sweeter. I was fine with the Honey Nut Cheerios latte that I went with, though I don't know that it was all that reminiscent of that above-average breakfast cereal. Prices were a bit high as well, but I know it's difficult competing with the mermaid so I won't fault them too much on that front. I've heard great things about some of the pastries they offer, but on the afternoon we visited, there was nothing left to try. read more

I ordered a flat white from Canary Coffee Bar and based on the reviews I was certain an excellent cup of coffee would be served. Unfortunately, what transpired was a total failure and mediocre experience. Firstly, I ordered a flat white and the price came out to $5.75 which is certainly on the higher end for this drink because I have the same order at every coffee shop I visit and travel the Midwest frequently. When the drink was served the cup was only half full which one could say was foreshadowing. Beyond that anywhere that charges this much for a half full flat white should know this is a medium temperature beverage and the coffee was piping hot. Even after the initial disappointments I was hopeful the coffee would be delicious and unfortunately it had the horrible taste of wood chips with soil undertones. In a nutshell, this place is a rip off as several other coffee shops will give you an infinitely tastier coffee that is of course served full, for half the price. read more

Love the ambiance at Canary Coffee Bar! A lovely spot to sit and read or work for a while. It can get a bit busy but typically does not seem too crowded and is just busy enough to not ever feel empty inside the shop. They are open through the evening too making it perfect for mid afternoon spot to hang out at. There are about 10 tables or so and I have never had a problem grabbing one on weekend afternoons. They have a variety of baked goods that all look delicious. I tried a savory scone (bacon cheddar jalapeño) and it was really good -- not too dry with good flavors. However, I wish I could have had it warmed but when I asked they said they didn't have anything to warm it in. I've had the house coffee before which is good but most recently I tried a chai which I was unfortunately disappointed by. It had very little flavor at all and was just watery/milky tasting. I will definitely be back because of the environment but I will probably stick to the more basic menu items read more

I like how the cafe is simply all about coffee. I tried their cold brew during their opening week and got a seasonal latte recently. The cold brew was smooth and chocolatey and had a slightly heavy body. Good enough. The seasonal latte was beautifully done. Foam and oat milk were rich and at right temperature (very important to me when it comes to latte, cortado and cappuccino). I could tell the espresso was strong as I could still taste it from other add-ins in the cup. The seasonal latte was well balanced, not watery, not over sweet, but still very flavorful. Parking may be a challenge since it is downtown. But don't miss it if you are in downtown - it is definitely one of the best two cafes (the other one is Kickapoo) in the downtown & Third Ward & Fifth Ward area. read more

Super cute and trendy coffee shop - I only tried their cupcake latte but it was very tasty! They clearly take a lot of pride in the art of coffee. I can easily see myself hanging out here and studying for an afternoon. The menu was a bit hard to access/read so I think I missed some of the more interesting options available!
