I am obviously in the minority with my rating. I went here because I was hoping to try something a little different and it had great reviews... and I was really close by due to a work meeting. It is pretty easy to find. GPS took me right to it. Since it is in a strip mall, there was adequate parking. The guy who took my order was nice enough. I ordered the deep fried chicken(3rd item under the Peruvian section) and had beans and slaw as a side. The chicken just wasn't good to me. It was stringy and chewy... not what I really look for in chicken. Maybe I should have gone more with the rotisserie style chicken that they had. Came here for a quick dinner with one of my good friends before driving home to Hampton Roads and it really hit the spot. Canastas Chicken really does Peruvian chicken right. Ordering is really easy as most everything here is served cafeteria style. You just go down the line and tell them what you want. I ordered a 1/2 white meat chicken meal with fried rice and mixed vegetables. Omg that chicken was so flavorful and juicy it made me wanna slap my momma! I also loved that their fried rice has egg in it and that their vegetables were seasoned; furthermore, the ají amarillo and ají verde sauces really bought the flavor of the whole meal together once I put them on top of the rice and vegetables. I ordered the two chicken meal and a couple other items to feed 8 people. It was just about the exact right amount. The chicken was so good. Flavored so well with tantalizing skin! The sides were all pretty good. Some people liked the green sauce on the side. Some liked the yellow sauce on the side. I don't really know what they are but I liked the spicier green sauce. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food a lot. If I was ever in Richmond and staying near the airport I would definitely get this food again!!! We love peruvian food and stopped by this place for lunch after a morning shopping at Short Pump. We got their dark chicken (tender and flavorful even without the amazing sauces) and lomo saltado (just ok) I was surprised by how extensive the menu was and will definitely come back to try more of their eclectic items (like beef hearts! Which I love but most places don't have!) Large interior space, plenty of space, and food comes out lickety split (fast casual restaurant where you order at the counter and bring the food back to your tables yourselves). We attempted to call them to place an order around 7:45 pm continued to get there voicemail which was odd since they don't close until 9pm. My family goes to the location and notice there is no chicken in the racks or anything @8:20pm . They then said there ran out of chicken . It was very inconsiderate and irresponsible of whoever was closing to attempt to close early and refuse to at least answer the phone to fore warn there customers . SOOO happy I found this place! Their food is delicious and hits all the right spots! Through delivery services, I ordered 1/4 dark meat with fried plantains and fried yuca as well as 2 empanadas. The chicken was juicy and quite delicious with well-seasoned spices. The accompanying sauces, however, brought it to another level!! The green sauce was cilantro/jalapeno based with just a kick of spiciness that went really well with the meat. Not sure what the yellow sauce was made out of but it was on more of the sour cream/mayo-y side. Its creaminess also complemented the chicken! The fried plantains were very sweet and nicely fried. It was my first time having yuca and I enjoyed it while dipping in the sauces. I appreciate the generous serving of meat and sides they provided. The empanadas were also delicious! Because of the process of delivery, the empanadas weren't as crispy but you can tell they prepared it fresh and hot cause the box kinda melted haha! The inside was very clean and spacious with booths along the wall and tables in the middle. I was really surprised to see such a variety and a very large menu. If you get the house chicken you can pick white meat or dark meat. The meal came with two sides. I am a rice lady and the fact that they had 4 diff types was right up my ally. I went with the green rice cause I've never tried it before. I have yet to see green rice on a menu except at Tazza kitchen. The green beans were flavorful and perfectly cooked mixed with grilled onions. The plantains were caramelized and soft but not overly sweet. The owner was nice enough to give me a lil sample. The side salad was so fresh and had loads on veggies. Try all the sauces it's seriously so good. They have like 4 diff salad dressings which doubled as delicious dipping sauces. I could seriously go on and on! I love Chicken fiesta but this is on a new level. The options are endless and the sauces are killer. If you wanna try something new or in the area GO! The location is within a strip mall but so glad I stopped by to eat here! Inside were about 10 each of tables and booths to sit down and eat, but many people were there to order and take out. I ordered the 1/4 chicken with green rice (cilantro rice) and fried plantains. The flavor on the chicken was excellent and the sauces were a great addition. The cilantro rice tasted great and the plantains were good, although they typically are not something I would order, I am glad I had them. I had the passion fruit for my drink and it was simply from a bulk juice container and although great taste was just simply OK. Canastas has become a go-to spot for us if we're not in the mood to cook during the week. As with most of the Peruvian spots I've been to, the rotisserie chicken is so moist. Sides, too, are typical of what I've seen at other Peruvian restaurants (our favorites are the green beans and fried rice). We've come to prefer ordering the anticucho de pollo (which is served deboned on a stick) so we don't have to pick thru bones. Just keep in mind if you're not ordering off the main rotisserie menu then it takes a bit longer since it's made to order. read more

Alright y'all. Offering up some dissent here. Maybe it was a bad night but our first time ordering from Canastas left a lot to be desired. We ordered the whole chicken meal with three sides and a soda. It's a ton of food and a great value and we were stoked to dig in. However as soon as I cut into the chicken breast we discovered it was still pink and had some bloody spots. Yikes! The thighs were also a bit pink too. So we decided to throw it in the oven along with our yucca fries which were a bit soggy by the time we got them home. I'm happy to report the yucca fries reheat very nicely in the oven. They were crisp and soft in the middle and an excellent vehicle for that delicious green sauce. After baking the chicken for about 20 minutes we finally were able to eat. To be honest, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. The chicken didn't have a ton of flavor and felt like it hadn't been seasoned before roasting. Thankfully we had lots of that yummy green sauce to dip it in. We also ordered the coleslaw and rice and beans. I was thinking the coleslaw would be vinegar based like you get with empanadas or pupusas but it was traditional southern style with mayo. It was ok. Other than the green sauce, the rice and beans were really the only saving grace of this meal. Very well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Friday, 18.11.02: So last night I got a jones on for their Go Greek Salad. When I got to the store I also wanted to try something new, so I ordered -- to go -- the Pork Chops (2 Fresh center cut pork chops marinated and charbroiled to perfection. Served with choice of 2 sides.) with French Fries and Red Potatoes. And two Go Greek Salads. (I wanted to hole up for the weekend with good food.) This time I did eat the French Fries first, and they were still wilty. Good flavor, however, and I stopped at half. Then the Pork Chops. Slightly larger than average; very flavorful with little waste. Experimenting a bit, I spread a bit of the Yellow Sauce on it. Very good. Same for the Green Sauce. I'd love to do the Pork Chops again. Then the Go Greek Salad. Only wanted to eat half. I've raved before about the GGS, but this time the vegetables were chopped too coarsely for my taste, so I had to chop them further. The vegetables (tomatoes, cukes, black olives, lettuce, red onions, red & green bell peppers) were all fresh and flavorful. A good amount of feta, and that awesome dressing. I'll be savoring the rest of the salads all weekend. It's the wilty French Fries and the coarseness of the veggies in the Go Greek Salads that prevent me from giving 5 stars again. After-notes: When I pulled the Pork Chops clam shell out of the bag, I was struck with how heavy it was. So I weighed it, and it was over 2 ponds of food! The amount of food that they gave me was redunculous - easily enough for two meals. They were generous with the sauces, and super friendly. Late post: we went last weekend, everything was so delicious and authentic. I am part Peruvian and missed all these dishes from when I lived in NoVa, so my husband and I drove 30 mins to this restaurant. Let me tell you!!!!!! This place hit all the marks for me! Everything was amazing! The shrimp with the white sauce is spicy but I love spicy food (just a warning for those that aren't). The only item not shown is their shrimp ceviche, it is definitely overpriced in my opinion ($18) for about 8 shrimps, a sweet potato, and some corn. So I wouldn't get that again... even though it was good but just not worth the price. All other items were fairly priced for the quality and amount of food. My family will be returning! read more
