I love wandering around Canoe. Their theme, if you will, is design: products that were designed so well that they can hardly be improved upon. For some items, this means they are constructed or made in the same way as they have been for decades, if not centuries! For example, they carry Botot, a toothpaste first made for Louis XIV in 1755. They carry home goods, hygiene items, classic children's toys, office supply items, the list goes on. This is a store to check out when you're shopping for someone who is hard to please; you're bound to find something unique. For each item there is an card that gives the product's design year and country of origin, as well as an informative description. If there is a downside to this place, it's that only so many products meet their high standards, so the merchandise doesn't change that much from one visit to the next. I went to Conoe today and there was a sign on the door closed. The lights were on and one of the owners' walked out and delivered a package to someone in a car. I asked if they were opening for the holidays and he said "we have been closed since March." He was very sippy and rude. NOT GOING THERE FOR ANY SHOPPING!!! read more

In true Portland fashion, they had one that was imported from Japan and made from cypress to help thin the forest. I also found a notebook for a promotion gift to give a friend. Until today, this was my favorite store in Portland. I have bought dozens of their products and routinely recommend the place to friends. My girlfriend and I returned here today to buy Christmas gifts. She was immediately drawn to an assortment of wooden serving boards. As each board is unique, she carefully picked out the one she liked best and had it wrapped. Immediately thereafter, an employee set out several others. One of them caught her eye as particularly beautiful. After much deliberation, she apologetically asked an employee if she could have this one instead. Admittedly, this was an annoying request, especially on a busy day. We expected an, "I'm sorry, but our policy is that we do not re-wrap gifts" type of response. This would have been utterly reasonable and we wouldn't have given it another thought. Instead, when the employee let the manager know of our request, he sneered and said, "That's ridiculous," going on about it for all the store to hear. We felt humiliated and more than a little awkward, but decided to make our purchases nevertheless. As the manager rang us up, he proceeded to lecture us on how he needed to "protect" his employees from unnecessary work - a fine sentiment if you're a union boss sticking it to the corporate fat cats, but less so to the guy buying your $30 cast iron bottle opener. His demeanor was dripping with disdain, like we were horrible people. After a tense exchange, he eventually apologized. This was appreciated, but as I handed over my $120, I couldn't help but think that there must be cheaper ways to be treated like shit. read more

This is one of the most unique and expertly curated stores I've ever been too. While they boast a wide selection of housewares, personal accessories, and grooming items, there is nothing overwhelming or disconnected about the shopping experience here. All the items' designs are described on white note cards. It's refreshing to know where your items are produced and to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into producing them. Their leather goods are affordable and luxurious and they have beautiful gifts including glass bowls, perfumes, and kitchen items that cater to multiple price points. Condescending rudeness never works well with customers. The moment I entered the store the guy darted over like a True Blood vampire and swooped my coffee out of my hand - no eye contact - no "excuse me but we don't allow food or drink in the store" - just an " I'll take your coffee and put it up on the counter". (He was really lucky it was not my first cup of the day.) It was so abrupt and cold - I felt like a 5 year old caught carrying a dripping ice cream cone through the Met. I murmured this to my friends who had begun to browse. I felt like leaving immediately but I decided to be patient and walk around with them while they shopped. If the man had have politely alerted me to their policy and kindly said " I can take care of it for you while you shop" all would have been fine. Delivery is everything. That would have been the end of it except that when my friends were making their purchases and I went to retrieve my coffee I noticed another customer standing next to me with a coke. I then took issue and asked why it was ok for her to walk around with a coke whilst I get my coffee removed? the guy was indignant and quickly livid - True Blood vampire time again. "We can't police everybody and it clearly says NO FOOD OR DRINK on the door! We have extremely expensive stuff in here and - Blah! Blah! Hoity- Toity Blah" Well obviously it does not CLEARLY say no food or drink on the door as I did not see it. Hey guy - You need another sign inside for those of us who missed the subtle, chest level one on the outside door. I will admit, I lost my cool and raised my voice before I left - but this guy - who I think is the owner is a complete jerk. Their retail etiquette needs a major upgrade. read more

Incredibly poor service, great stuff. I went in on a Saturday morning with my daughter, who was planning to register for wedding gifts here. She tried to interest the sales staff (there were two people working, NO ONE else in the store, and they were busy chatting with each other) to explain the registry and also, Heath pottery, but got nowhere. I've actually probably never been ignored so thoroughly. We left, likely never to return! The owner AND staff really need to value giving service more. It's ridiculous to ignore customers -- especially when nearly everything in this shop can be found and purchased elsewhere. read more

Filled to the brim with all the great stuff that you would hope to one day find at an estate sale for $5, but someone actually still makes it, and Canoe has it, and instead of $5, it's $68, but still worth every penny. Row, Row, Row your boat gently down the strEET....to Canoe! Canoe is the type of store that I would someday like to own, operate, or somehow curate. It seems to be filled with smartly designed and high quality items that otherwise have nothing else in common. I was pleased to find that they carry Skin Food a Weleda brand lotion that I adore. Along with a few skin care products you'll find well made dishes, books, tricky bags and totes and even a rich looking condom holder. Imagine that. The minus one star is the fact the prices are high. But in my dream life, when I own the store, the prices won't matter. Isn't that how the end of the goes anyway....Merrily, Merrily, Merrily......life is but a dream. read more

Canoe is a room of beautiful things. Little beautiful and (largely) perfect things. I'm not entirely sure what to call a place like this, perhaps a utility gallery? BIFL emporium? Its a room of exquisitely crafted tools for your everyday life and I want it. Sorry, that can't be right... I want all of them. Every object is Canoe is a thing of such simple beauty. There's that gorgeous, solid-steel ice cream scooper (perfected and unchanged from back in '34), the raw aluminum collapsible fountain pens, the handcrafted leathergoods, and delightfully luxurious shaving products courtesy of Edwin Jagger. Even the condom dispenser is damn classy. Probably one of the most impressive things about Canoe is the loyalty they seem to command after just a few minutes of browsing. So quickly was I sold on the integrity and care they put into finding every product that with each item I came across I had to reconsider how to integrate it into my life. Products I hardly even considered in the past (why would I need a box made solely for tea?) now seemed both viable and necessary. With each good I am just waiting for an excuse to pick up. I'll grow a damn beard just for that collapsible badger hair shaving brush. Hell, if you are just feeling intimidated by the deluge of new awesomeness, just drop in for a refill on your FieldNotes and fisher space pens. This store deserves your attention. read more

I love this store. It's so small and well-curated that you kind of expect everything to be really expensive. But it's not. I did a significant proportion of my Christmas shopping here, picking up a lot of really wonderful, beautiful small things for under $40. Everyone has a different customer service experience, but mine has always been pretty good. This is a beautifully curated store with a broad selection of unique items for the home. The aesthetic is very clean with little display cards explaining the items - where they are made, the history of the maker, how to use. Each item seems to be chosen not just for its beautiful design, but for utility as well. The selection ranges from kitchen tools to personal accessories (jewelry, wallets) and much more. You can find items made from all around the world, including some locally crafted goods. Canoe has a fair range of pricepoints - there are obviously splurge-worthy finds, but also small reasonably-priced items perfect for gifts for nearly any occasion, from new mothers to coworkers. I've been stopping by here over the past 5 years whenever I'm in this part of town, many times just to browse without purchasing anything. I've always found the staff to be incredibly helpful and polite. They're always willing to share the backstory of their goods and it is clear that they take a lot of pride in their shop. Over the years, I've purchased a collection of Heath Ceramics, handblown glasses, a baby rattle, and various other home items. Sorry to be the odd man out here but as much as I enjoy the location, store design and more importantly their products, I just can't seem to get past the fact that the woman who works here isn't very customer friendly until you actually ask for something. I went in with a friend recently and we were the only ones in the store at the time but the saleswoman neither acknowledged us nor offered any assistance until I made an inquiry about a specific item. A friendly greeting goes a long way towards making your customers feel at home, but what we got was awkward silence for a good 6-8 minutes which was even more strange of a feeling in such a small, intimate space. My friend said he always gets the same (lack of) reaction, confirmed by yet another friend who goes in often. To be totally fair, each of them said there is a gentleman who is often working that is amazingly nice and friendly, so I haven't given up on Canoe entirely in the hopes that some day I might luck out and show up while he's working. I love Heath ceramics and was so excited to discover that Canoe has them in stock. I had visited all the vintage stores on Hawthorne trying to find a set of Heath dinnerware with no luck. After Jake at red snapper recommended I go to Canoe, I no longer had to continue my search and was so excited to buy matching place settings for eight. In addition, they had colorful felt coasters and placemats that looked great on my teak dining table - not at all like the cheap plastic ones I have usually seen. They weren't cheap, but I felt like everything was fairly priced. Also, lots of high quality home decor items that make for great unique gifts. read more

Beautiful shop full of unique, tasteful, stylie things from around the world (and seemingly 100% Chinese sweatshop free!) This is my go-to place for lovely gifts or cool things for the household...think heirloom quality stuff that you will have forever (like my beloved Amish broom and Japanese vintage kimono pin cushion.)
