This is a pretty restaurant, and it was very close to where we were staying. It has a nice vibe to it. We enjoyed our meal here. The food was good, but it was very heavy. Portion sizes are pretty massive. My dining partner got the meatloaf dish. It was absolutely ginormous! We were in an Airbnb without a full kitchen, so though we took it with us, he never did eat it. It was heavily glazed with something he did not like. Had it been glazed with a little lighter hand, he probably would not have minded it. But he did not like that flavor at all. The mac & cheese was good but again heavier than he likes to eat. The seafood dish I had, on the other hand, was very good. It had plenty of pieces of lobster in it, as well as generous portions of shellfish. The broth was also excellent. As this is a pricier place, we only made one trip during our 13-day stay. It is worth a visit here, and you'll likely get enough for a second meal. There were lots of good choices on the menu. I originally thought to give this place 5 stars based on my dish, but due to the fact that my dining partner did not make any effort to eat the rest of his meal he took home because he said he didn't like it enough, that took a star away. read more

I'm going to start by saying I was extremely excited to try Canoe and I don't think I've ever been so disappointed. The only positive part of our meal was the appetizers. We were seated immediately and our drink order was taken quickly but took a long time to come out. Our appetizers came out quicker and honestly were amazing. We ordered canoe bread, grilled cheese and tomatoes, crispy orange chicken, and sweet and sour calamari. Everything was delicious and I wish we had stopped at appetizers. Next came salads; two of us asked for extra dressing and half our salad was gone before it arrived. We also had to ask for another round of drinks even though our cups were empty. Dinner took forever to come out and only six of our seven meals came out. We tried to wait for the final meal but it was taking so long and our meals were already cold, they came out cold. The final meal came out and the salmon was raw. My guess is they forgot about the salmon and tried to make it quickly. We sent it back and they literally threw it back on the grill but let the side sit. Every dinner was cold and the two steaks were over done and cold. Our waitress, Melinda, never once asked how it was. We again had to ask for another round of drinks which again took an absurd amount of time to come out. Here's the thing normally at this point I would have left but we were there celebrating my birthday and everyone wanted to stay for dessert to celebrate. Dessert was even more disappointing than our main meals. I ordered the cinnamon roll and it tasted store bought and wasn't even warmed up. Our table also ordered the carrot cake (more like half frozen spice cake), the chocolate chip lava cake (no lava), and the triple chocolate cake (meh). Again the waitress never checked in. We finally had enough and when I saw the waitress I gave her a card to run so we could be done I honestly thought it was going to take her forever to bring us the bill and luckily it didn't. $505.65 before tip. $505.65 and the majority of our meal was terrible. $605.65 after tip which was 20% and 100% not deserved. The cherry on top was a manager never came by after we sent raw salmon back and they left it on the bill. Personally I don't care so much about the money but the fact that a manager never came by is mind blowing. That's restaurant 101. We live on the seacoast of NH and have an abundance of restaurants to choose, but when up in the Lakes Region this is one of our favorite places to eat. We have always had good service and the food is creative and always well cooked. We enjoy the peach & burrata crostini as an appetizer. I often get their mixed grill and always have enough to have leftovers. The prices overall are more affordable than home. The dining is next to the lake and, while there isn't much of a lake view through the trees, the ambiance in the restaurant is relaxed. read more

Regretfully this place is losing its excellence. My seared ahi tuna was cold and I could tell it was prepared ahead of time and put in the fridge. The chowder was runny and tasted like milk more than anything. The salmon was overcooked, the pasta with short ribs was all mushy (the short rib tasted good) For 2 people this costed $150 with tip! Absurd considering everything was not up to par! Where is the quality control? What a lovely surprise! While staying in Center Harbor, we didn't feel like driving far and this restaurant came recommended. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some cocktails before dinner. Hubby had the last shot of Blanton's, and they graciously gave him the decorative horse from the bottle. I ordered the tenderloin medallions with the cheesy hashbrowns. The medallions were cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the hashbrowns had a beautiful gruyere cheese in them. Hubby had the seafood special which consisted of pappardelle pasta in a beautiful mushroom sauce with the most gorgeous and generous portion of scallops and shrimp. There was also warm bread and butter to go with the dinner. Service was great and the value was amazing. Highly recommend! read more

Food was great as it always is! Highly recommend any of their multiple steak offerings or any comfort food dish such as the meatloaf or haddock. Our service was great from the moment we walked in the door until we left. The manager held the door for us as we left. The server communicated about the wait times and specials and had great food/wine suggestions! The ambiance was fun and upbeat, but quiet in other areas! Definitely worth stopping by to see it for yourself! Was also pleased to know they have multiple resturants and locations! The food was amazing, and it is definitely one my favorite places in the mountains. The service was great and our waitress was attentive to making sure we had everything we needed. We were sat down stairs and a large party was seated. They were very loud and kind of ruined the ambiance. I could see other people also bothered by it, and one group even told the waitress about it. I had lunch at Canoe, yesterday (4/16) afternoon. I hadn't been the restaurant in at least 12 years. Other than the place hasn't been spruced up in years, it was terrific. Plenty of food, expertly prepared and great service. What shocked me, was how reasonable the prices were. Back 15 years ago, I thought they were over-priced, but that's certainly not the case any longer. I'm the first one to complain, when I get less than acceptable food at a restaurant, but there was nothing to complain about, with the meals we had. My friend had Petite Sirloins, that were done to perfection, way more mashed potatoes than she could eat and a vegetable. I had the Mixed Grill, which was exceptional. Better than they served 15 years ago and I don't think the price has changed much. Do yourself a favor and stop by for lunch or dinner, you'll enjoy it and be thrilled at the reasonableness of your bill. read more

Had the pan seared Cod fish. Was served on a lobster ravioli and a cream sauce. Had a bruschetta on top, was pretty tangy. I was a bit skeptical but went for it anyway, it was delicious! I would go back and have it again. .my husband had the meatloaf with a Dirac ketchup. The meatloaf was really good, he wished he got the sauce on the side as it was covered on it and just too much. Was served with really good mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked green beans. We started with the shrimp cocktail, was pricey 3 shrimp for 17$, but they were delicious and well worth it. Underwhelmed. I've never been a fan of this place but hadn't yet been there since the interior updating. It was nice to see you can sit at the bar or near the bar on one side, but the other half of the restaurant looked pretty much the same as before. The server was a young guy who seemed new and was trying his best with a great attitude, but drinks took at least 15 minutes to be delivered and the food was also kind of slow. The food was at best average, basic and priced high for the area. The scallops which were properly prepared, a reasonable portion and included mashed cauliflower. I had the mixed grill which included a tasty sausage and steak and turkey tips. These were all cooked properly, but without much flavor. The wine and beer selections were also uninspiring. I'd like to see a bit more creativity in the cooking here or bring the prices down to normal pub fare. Underwhelmed again. read more

Excellent!!! The atmosphere is laid back but classy, not over the top fancy but a nice place to say the least! The dining room and high tops in the bar look over the lake which is gorgeous for sunset. Drinks... 10/10! My boyfriend and I both got the smoked bourbon barrel / cask aged bourbon special with a big ice cube and we enjoyed them! They have a great wine list as well. The second time we went I ordered the Mezcalita which was mezcal, Cointreau and fresh lime with a Tajin rim and let me tell you... I was blown away! The Caesar salad is crisp and delicious with freshly shredded Parmesan. As for entrees, I can't get enough of the pan seared salmon over sundried tomato risotto! The portions are generous and you'll definitely be leaving with takeout boxes! My boyfriend has ordered the steak specials both times and hasn't been disappointed. We went there for my husband's birthday as we were staying down the street at a hotel. One thing I will say is make reservations!!! Luckily we were able to get a seat at the bar cause if not we'd have to wait over an hour. The bartender Beth is great . Very attentive n makes you feel very comfortable n makes you laugh. The food was super good. We had the sweet n spicy Calamari n that was fantastic. The new England clam chowder was very good. The cocktails were delicious. I sat at the bar, where only one person was seated, hoping for faster service. I ordered a cup of clam chowder and a chicken sandwich. The bartender was unfriendly and acted like I interrupted her work, which, at the time, consisted of chatting with the only other customer. The clam chowder had a lot of potatoes but no clams. When I mentioned this to the bartender, she didn't apologize or offer to get me another cup. When I asked for a second condiment to go with the sandwich, she got an attitude. The potato chips that came with the chicken sandwich were overcooked and inedible. I often eat at a bar because service is usually faster, but if I go again (unlikely), I'll take a table. read more

My husband and I stopped by this quaint restaurant during our trip to New England. I must say the ambience and our service was really great. We enjoyed the table bread and butter, and my husband enjoyed his seafood meal. I, however, ordered the meatloaf and macaroni. The macaroni was great, but the meatloaf left a lot to be desired. If you like a restaurant where you and your party sit down to eat at 6:00, and aren't served your cocktails till 6:35, then Canoe is the place for you. I know it was a Friday night, in the summer, but still, there is no excuse for that. The management cram too many people into the place, and they just don't have enough staff to accommodate. To top it off, you arrive and find there are NO more parking spaces left. So that means you have to drive to a nearby church and get shuttled back to the restaurant. Can you imagine, talk about a hassle. Who needs that! The food was average at best. And not cheap. Too many negatives, we won't be returning anytime soon. read more

We are vacationing and tried the Canoe for the first time. We absolutely loved our dining experience! Our server Lucy was incredible! She was extremely attentive, on top of all of our needs, and super friendly! We ordered three courses, and they came out perfectly timed. Any time we asked for something, our needs were addressed promptly. We started with the Bruschetta and Burrata. It was a completely different take on Bruschetta than we ever had, and we really enjoyed it. We had an Iceberg Wedge for our second course, which they gladly split for us without us asking. It was a typical and well-made Wedge with generous "stuff" as toppings. For our entrees, my wife ordered the Pan Seared Salmon, which was cooked perfectly! The accompaniments were unique and quite tasty. I ordered the Beef Medallions, which were also cooked perfectly. I ordered the hashbrown casserole, which was tasty and unique, but overwhelmed the beef (I would go with mashed potato next time). The Bearnaise sauce was a little disappointing. I also tried their Coconut Martini, which was quite enjoyable and exotic. The bread is freshly made and served with a yummy honey butter. Their wine list is very affordable. Overall, we left very full and really enjoyed our meals! The food was priced very reasonably. The service was impeccable. We definitely will return in the future and highly recommend! read more

Mimsy and I have had lunch here about a dozen times, because Mimsy can't take going to T-Bones one more time, which is where my mother-in-law always wants to go when we take her to lunch. The atmosphere and service at Canoe are very good, but the food is mediocre. The lunch specials are always the same for some reason, this last visit, I got the fried chicken sandwich, Mimsy got the Caesar Salad. The chicken was soggy, the coating was sliding off. Spicy Mayo condiment was MIA but the cook had sprayed some Frank's hot on it. Came with some messy coke slaw underneath, and a slice of fake tomato on top. Served with a side of freezer-bag fries. I have a bad feeling the chicken had been previously fried and was re-heated in a microwave. Mimsy's Cesar salad was likewise soggy, and she makes a better dressing herself, just sayin'. The mother-in-law got their version of General Tso's chicken, as usual, which she liked, but like I said, she likes T-Bones, too. So she doesn't count. This leaves me wondering, with all the money in the lakes region, why are almost all of the restaurants sucky? But then again, if you're the sort that will dump $2M on a house on Winnipesaukee, with your immediate neighbors so close they can see you brushing your teeth from their living room window, if you're the type that loves roaring around on that choppy lake in your small-dick boat, trying to avoid the other drunk Massholes careening toward you in their micro-penis boats, then you're the sort that thinks Shibley's is one great restaurant, so there's your answer. read more

Very underwhelming and overpriced. First, we made a reservation for 4 for 4:30 and were seated down in the basement even though there were plenty of tables available in the upstairs main dining room, both upon our arrival and when we left. Two of us had the Pasta seafood with Clams, scallops and shrimp and red roasted tomatoes in a light cream sauce. Mine contained six clams, five which were unopened. I told our server, who sent them back to the kitchen. It's common knowledge that you're not supposed to eat clams that have not opened, but instead of steaming fresh clams, they just pried open the unopened clams. I tried one and it tasted off. The scallops were also very over cooked. Rest of the meals were just okay despite the price. Overall, it was a pricey and underwhelming meal. read more

Our server, Jessica, was the only way of light through this dining experience. For $20-$40 a plate, we experienced steak cooked to resemble shoe leather and cold meatloaf and sides. The steak was one of the specials for $36/plate. 3 people in our party ordered it to be cooked from rare to medium rare. All sent theirs back due to the paper thin cuts, well under the cut ounces described in the special, came out well done. Me and another person in our party ordered the meatloaf. This, along with the grilled asparagus with it were both cold. The other person who ordered the meatloaf also had cold food. We are locals, visiting a local business and paying close to $200 a couple after apps, drinks and our meals. We won't be returning anytime soon, unfortunately, and hope the kitchen gets their timing under control. The 2 stars are for the service from our young waitress who kept a smile as we and neighboring tables sent food back as well as the manager's efforts to make things right by comping 3 plates of cold food. read more

Canoe Restaurant definitely has a traditional feel to it. I can tell it attracts the locals who have frequented the establishment for many years. The decor inside definitely reflects the area, which is simple and not overwhelming, which reflects the calmness and simplicity of the area with the lake nearby. My friends and I went here for lunch, and overall I thought the experience was average. Service was a little slow even though the place was not too packed yet. As for the food, I tried a friend's Iceberg Wedge which was delicious and contained a generous piece of iceberg lettuce with bacon, tomato, scallions, and ranch dressing. We also had the appetizer fried calamari dish that was good and that came with a sweet thai chili sauce. As for my main course, I opted to get their staple dish, the lobster mac & cheese. As for my review of this dish, I just thought it was okay and nothing too special. The lunch portion had a very little amount of lobster and I felt I just had a platter of mac & cheese for the most part. I would have rather had a smaller dish of mac & cheese with a little more lobster. I am intrigued on how the dish tastes in dinner platter form (apparently it has 1/4 of a lb. of lobster for $10 more). However, this is a simple mid to high-end type of place and looks to be a very well-established, so I can see why the locals keep coming back here. read more

We went to Canoe last night for my husband's 60th birthday celebration. . Wedge salad was delicious and our dinners were very good . Pork chop and filet were cooked to perfection ! Only complaint is that the potatoes in the "Hash" potatoes were not nearly cooked enough . Server had chef cook another order for us and still the potatoes in the casserole tasted cold and raw . My husband and I were so excited to try Canoe. We moved to the area a few months ago and finally had the time and opportunity to give it a try for lunch today. I WISH I could add some photos of the food we ate. I WISH I could provide a description of the food we ate. I WISH we ate. The truth is, we arrived at 1:15. And, after watching every patron around us get waited on and receive their food (the family we walked in with was served, ate and LEFT), we paid for our drinks and left at 2:22. I don't know what was going on. At first, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt due to staff shortages, but literally every other table received their food in what seemed like a timely manner. Even at the point where I got up from our table to find someone, ANYONE, to help, the bartender and our own waitress just looked at me without acknowledging me before the hostess finally came over to speak to me. And STILL, I may have been able to find a way to give the place another shot, because as I said, we really wanted to try it, but with barely an, "I'm sorry," the hostess didn't so much as offer to comp our drinks. (We had one beer and a Bloody Mary - hardly enough to break the bank.) For the record, at no point during our visit were we anything but nice and respectful to our waitress. When it took longer than it should have for her to greet us and take our drink order, we told her no problem. When she brought a carafe of water, but we had no glasses, no problem. When the plates and napkins she brought were dirty, I tried to help her out because she was obviously mortified. Even when I finally went to the hostess stand because enough was enough, I was disappointedly stern, but respectful. I can't, in good faith, recommend Canoe, mostly because, when given the opportunity to save/fix the situation, they epically failed. read more

He enjoyed it very much, even though it took ages to arrive. I ordered the escargot- I actually had to ask the server what it was because it looked like a deep dish pizza!! The escargot were flavorless and buried under 1/2 inch of bland melted cheese I also ordered the mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta- more like some toasted bread with a side of sautéed mushrooms with goat cheese crumbles and balsamic glaze. Not very appealing or appetizing. Started out kind of lousy , we had an appointment in Laconia and decided we would use the gift certificate that my daughter and her husband gave us while we we're in the neighborhood. I asked the hostess if I could go sit at a table in the bar . After I sat down a women that works there says to me that we only take reservations. It was 4:30 in the afternoon. Why did she have to tell me that when they had no reservations before 7:00. I will never go back there. The waitress was great and got more than a 20 % tip. It wasn't her fault.
