Well, I can't mark them down for being inconsistent. Every time I have been to this establishment I have been more than disappointed. Tonight they were not busy (4-5 tables outside). We ordered drinks, which came in a normal amount of time. Then we waited. And waited. And waited to order. Probably 20 minutes. Finally we ordered. Then we waited. And waited. No offer for more drinks in all that time. When the food did arrive, one dish was missing. Starving , we dug in. Except for the one member of our party who had nothing. We had a show to go to, so all but them and their partner left for the show. The last two finally arrived at the show after waiving off the food that arrived around 30 minutes after we ate. Ate here for the first time yesterday when we had time to kill before a show at the Colonial. We made reservations in advance as suggested on the restaurant's website, and we were glad we did because the place filled up quickly shortly after we were seated. While we did find service to be a little on the slower side, we allowed ourselves plenty of time and were not particularly bothered by that. Our server was friendly despite being clearly quite busy. We both had the chicken tender basket, and while it certainly wasn't anything fancy, they were probably the best chicken tenders I've ever eaten. The batter was crispy and not too thick, and the chicken itself was some of the best I've ever eaten in terms of preparation. The fries were delicious as well, and we did not find the restaurant to be dusty/dirty or the prices to be horrendous as indicated in multiple other reviews. My biggest complaint, honestly, is that the lighting is very dim and could be problematic for some people. We walked in at 1:45 and were seated right away. We ordered sandwiches, which, according to the menu, come with fries, and we each ordered a side salad. Our food finally came out 30 minutes later, both plates without fries. I asked our server and she said she assumed we wanted the salad instead of fries. Why didn't she ask us instead of assuming? The side salad was an upsell on the menu, she cut her employer short. We did want the fries but told her to forget them as we didn't want to wait another half hour. I ordered the grilled chicken ranch sandwich, the chicken breast had obviously been split as it was very flat. It was also very difficult to cut or bite into. It had been either over cooked or cooked from frozen. I left half on my plate. Hubby ordered a Reuben sandwich which he said was very good, but the corned beef looked đried out along the edges. He is much more forging than I. Although our salads were fresh, pieces of the iceberg lettuce in mine were brown and mushy. This was our first visit and our last.. This was a great find. It was recommended by our nearby hotel, and they were so right! Conveniently located in downtown Laconia...it was a great place for dinner. The hostess and waitress were very friendly and super helpful. (The hostess even gave us suggestions about nearby places to visit during our trip.) we had plenty of hot rolls and some really good food. Both of our meals were great. Really loved my lobster roll and coleslaw. The payment process with a QR code was really easy and convenient. Next time, we'd like to dine outside. My husband and I were here for The Extreme Experience. We did a walk in we had bacon wrapped scallops, stuffed mushrooms which were delicious. This is a great place to eat if you've never been to a restaurant in your entire life...that way you'll have nothing to compare it to. If you HAVE eaten in a restaurant before, well, this probably isn't somewhere you want to eat. On the plus side, the waitstaff was friendly and the ambiance was homey. It was charred black on the outside so that was all that could be tasted was the burned outer shell. Hamburgers shouldn't have shells. I had the baked stuffed scallops. This consisted of 6 medium sized scallops dumped on a bed of plain tasteless bread crumbs that appeared to have been poured out of a box into the bowl. No seasoning. No flavor. I took my mother to lunch here on a weekday. She has mobility issues, and I hadn't done the proper research to know this is not great for those with mobility issues. The handicap spaces are quite a distance from the entrance. The sidewalk is uneven and presents possible tripping hazards. And there are stairs to go down into the restaurant. The lunch menu didn't offer too much for vegetarians (think protein), and the price points were high. The portions were a bit small for the cost. Our server was nice, and the food tasted fine. I could have done without the TVS and Keno. I can't bring my mother back here because of how difficult it was to get her in and out. I'm Not sure I'd come back anyway. read more

Context: This is a family-style restaurant. The four stars - based on that, not based on it being a Michelin starred restaurant. The food was good. Not OMG-WOW, but for out-of-towners going to a show down the street, this was more than fine. Waitress was friendly, and food was tasty. Bacon-wrapped scallops were plentiful and both the bacon and scallops were cooked perfectly: not overcooked and chewy, not under-cooked and raw. They were just right. I was truly hoping to have an amazing local experience but unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The biggest fault was the extremely slow service (30-35min for a simple hamburger) and lack of attention to detail by the chef and wait staff. The hamburger arrived with no condiments and when we asked why, we were told that the chef forgot. What was more disappointing was having to wait another 10min to get lettuce and tomatoes while the sandwich was getting cold (wait staff forgot and I had to go inside and remind them). Wow, first of all, the longest I have ever waited for food. And when the food came, what a disappointment. The salmon portion was tiny, dry, and burned in places. The baked potato was just a dry baked potato - no option for toppings. The "butter" was Smart Balance margarine. How can this place call itself "Fine Foods"? Stopped by for lunch while out riding the Winni bike trail. Beautiful Saturday, and we got a table outside. Bruchetta appetizer was excellent. I had the Frech dip roast beef, one of the best I've ever had. Wiffy had a fried chicken breast on a pinnini. She loved it. It was fresh chicken and was giant. Since I had evening work in the area, I enjoyed an early dinner at Hector's Restaurant in Downtown Laconia, which serves up American cuisine for lunch (until 4PM) and dinner in a casual and comfortable atmosphere. When I arrived here around 5:30PM, the place was not really busy and was being decorated with string holiday lights, a sign that winter is not too far off. I was greeted as I entered and could choose where I wanted to be seated. I chose to sit in the upper dining area, where there was less foot traffic. I also grabbed a free Weirs Times near the front door to read at my table since I was dining solo. A broad range of menu offerings include steaks, seafood, chicken, veal, pork, pasta, soups, salads, sandwiches, and appetizers at moderate prices, most dinner entrees priced $10.99-$15.99. Prime rib is served on Saturday nights. A lighter fare menu is also offered including fish & chips, hamburger, Philly cheesesteak, chicken fingers, and crab cakes. Daily Specials are also offered and posted by the front door. The chowder was pretty filling and I'd definitely order this chowder again! For dinner, I ordered the New England Style Crab Cakes ($7.99) served with rice and cole slaw, a good price! The food portion was just right. However, the 2 Small Crab Cakes were okay, deep fried brown and crispy outside and soft inside, though mainly minced bread filler, dijon tartar sauce for dipping. The rice was cooked on the soft side and had a decent chicken flavor. The minced cole slaw had a nice cool sweet taste. I did take a peek at the dessert menu which included chocolate lava cake, white macadamia nut cheesecake, grapenut pudding, brownie sundae, Boston creme pie, and Peter's famous mudd pie. I wanted to try the latter, but I was already full and passed on dessert. Overall, a solid good dinner at a very fair price with friendly, efficient and prompt service. Change is usually a good thing but not in the case of new owners (last summer) at Hectors! I took 2 new neighbors there last nite for the worst dinner imaginable. Very embarrassing as we've been eating there over 20 years! Nachos were a big pile of melted goo (cheese?) that were in a big hard clump. Other friend had a tiny little chicken breast (Chicken George which is usually huge!) that she couldn't cut, dry and hard, awful. They comped for the lousy nachos, my dinner was ok but $7.00 more than last summer! We have a group of 10 and go out every Thur and also a high school class group each month of 15-20 people...we will not be going to Hectors, as in the past. That will be our change - a good thing! I've been here a few times over the course of 15 or so years, and it's still my favorite time capsule. Perfecting capturing the spirit of the 90s, on the walls actually hang a lot of local, interesting history. Moving on to food, it has typical NH American fair. This time, I got the vegetarian sandwich without cheese and I added a few olives from my lunchmate's overpowering vegetarian pasta primavera. I was pleasantly surprised by the well-balanced flavors of the grilled veggies, though I do believe the extra olives elevated the experience. I also had a few espresso martinis that were really good! Service is great too and my server was very upfront about what to order and what not to. Prices are obviously reasonable--look at the nonexistent renovation expenses and mortgage likely paid off. We had a couple of locals recommend Hectors to us, so we decided to give it a try. What a total disappointment. We first tried the Nachos ($8.99). Described on the menu as "Fresh fried corn chips layered with ground beef, nacho cheese, tomatoes, and scallions" the actuality was round Tostitos sprinkled with a smattering of beef and tomatoes and some shredded cheese. The Guacamole add-on ($1.50) was a 2 tablespoon portion of food-service grade guac. We asked for no scallions, but the plate came loaded with them. We also tried the Ceasar Salad (watery and non-descript) and the Chicken Tenders basket with sweet & sour sauce. The tenders were anything but...chewy, dry, and definitely not house-made, and the sweet & sour sauce was a disgusting, congealed teriyaki sauce that was way too salty. Topping off our meal was a mud pie. The bartender/server (who was the ONLY service person in the place) told us it was a 6-layer mud pie. What we got was coffee ice cream with some chocolate chips folded in that was so frozen that it shattered when we finally cut into it. The only saving grace was that the drinks were reasonably priced. We won't be back. The food here is expensive and nowhere near tasty. Went here for the Mother's Day Buffet. Had never been before. The food was excellent. Roast beef was perfectly cooked. My husband absolutely loved the sweet and spicy chicken dish. We love going to buffets and have tried many. For the price you won't be disappointed. We've paid more and got less. The desserts were delicious as well. We look forward to eating here again. While spending the week on the lake, we happened here for dinner with the extended family. Decor is rather dated, but overall appearance was clean and kept. The food was passable (fried clams were very heavily breaded but flavorful). However, the main detractor was the service. Slow is an understatement despite a plethora of waitstaff on duty. Drinks were not refilled despite repeat requests, plates from appetizers were not cleared before the entrees were served, and getting the bill again took multiple requests. My boyfriend and I made a reservation for 7 pm for 2 people and when we arrived at 7 there was confusion with our reservation and got asked 4 times who we were and if we made a reservation.
