"Little pitchers have big ears," the old-timers used to say, bewildering the whippersnappers. Wait, we're talking "little pitchers" as in Ron Guidry, Tom Gordon, Tim Lincecum, Marcus Stroman, and so on? Nah, these "little pitchers" are paloma-like Jalicesense cocktails served in little clay cups called "cantaritos." Regrettably, I've never tried one. Anyway, in a town that (IMO) has been going downhill for a while when it comes to dining, the modest pan-Latin Cantaritos Cafe is one of the better restaurants to open in Athens post-COVID. In my experience, they've done a great job with everything: breakfast burrito, a Venezuelan (I think?) breakfast sandwich of some sort, massive heavy (a little too heavy, maybe) arepas, all terrific. The menu is huge. Prices have been reasonable, but it's been a few months since I was there. P.S. The review preceding mine by two chronologically is a disgrace: "I love this place," but one star because a single employee on a single occasion didn't adequately kiss her pinkie ring? Let me start by saying I love this place, their food and drinks, and normally don't have any issues. 7:10 am - all lights are on, open sign is on, door is unlocked, and no hours on the door that I saw. Went in and lady just looks at me. I said, "I just want to get coffee." She said, "dont open until 7:30." I said well, you just lost business and shouldn't have your open sign (on the side of the building to draw in traffic) on or door unlocked. I don't understand business' mentality anymore. If I owned a business that served coffee in the mornings and someone came in 15-20 min before we opened because I had my sign on and door unlocked, I would say, "it may take a few extra minutes because we aren't open yet, but what can I get you?" Thats how you keep happy customers. Instead, you turned me away losing that sale, gaining this review, AND I will reconsider next time I decide I may want to eat your food, and just go somewhere else, also this review could affect others coming there, so affecting future sales. If the lights weren't all on, open sign wasn't on, I wouldn't have come in to have this experience. Business', YOU MUST DO BETTER!!! News flash! There are tons of you for us to choose from. We did carry-out only Food: good but not outstanding A huge serving of rice came with both the entrees we chose. Place has been a few different restaurants over the years but Cantaritos Cafe is a winner. We were seated right away and brought a small bowl of soup to "warm up" on this 65 degree morning. It was very good. Our waiter Angel took great care of us throughout the meal. I got the poblano omelet and added chorizo as a meat. I ordered the potato hash as a side. My wife ordered the Philly cheesesteak omelet with potatoes. Both dishes arrived very quickly. My poblano omelette was delicious. I added a couple of their hot sauces to enhance the eggs. My wife loved her Philly cheesesteak omelet. It was filled with a lot of meat along with grilled onions and pepper covered in cheese. They have a very big menu for breakfast. read more

We were happy to see this place opened a little bit later on a Saturday night after celebrating 420 all day at a brewery a couple of miles away. We had snacks all day at the festival so it was really great when the nice lady put the two bowls of soup in front of us. My wife can't eat wheat so I got hers! I paid her back though and gave her my frenchie fries that came with my loaded Cubano sandwich. My sandwich was great and a sloppy mess which I really enjoyed. My wife had something, rice, egg, meat and plantains, I think. She said it was really good. Service was very good and nice lady brought us a treat at the end. What a pleasant surprise! We were in the mood for brunch and stumbled across this gem! We were greeted with a nice warm bowl of soup that really tasted good and set will on our tummies as they'd been a little upset. The food and service were great! Meg had the huevos rancheros and I had the Pabellon and a side of arepas. They were all really quality dishes, but the Pabellon shredded beef was amazing! A must have! I ordered off of the favorites menu and my quesadilla with cheese, poblano peppers, onions, and scrambled eggs is so amazing. I had the Sandwich Cubano and my wife had the Philly Steak sandwich. I ordered the Cubano with no avocado. I even said it twice and made sure the waiter understood. It arrived slathered with a yellow green mishmash of avocados (aka baby poop). I raked that mess off as best I could and tasted the sandwich. Not good. The pieces of meat were dry and tasteless and the cheese (provolone maybe?) was tasteless. The Philly Steak sandwich was the same ---dried out meat and tasteless. Even the green peppers were mild and of no distinction. They do serve a lukewarm brown soup as a starter (gratis). Zero stars for the food. Service was very attentive--But my food still arrived not the way I ordered it. One star. Ambiance was okay, but all I could think about were the really good restaurants that have been located in this same space before this one. It is a clean restaurant. Two stars. To be fair, I have never had anything from their breakfast menu, but based on today's experience we will never go back. read more

I was genuinely so shocked to see the extremely negative review on here. The food was AMAZING, and there was so much variety. Plus, all day breakfast!! The staff was super kind and attentive. We tried chilaquiles, mudaros, huevos rancheros, crepes, pancakes, arepas, pupusas, and some other side dishes and it was all phenomenal. I liked it! It's in the plaza with the dollar general market. Doesn't look like much, but the service was really efficient, and the food came out quick. We had servers checking in on us regularly. The food itself was amazing. I got the quesadillas with poblanos and a fried egg, and it was awesome. Really, really good flavor and I didn't feel like it needed anything. I asked for a little bit of hot sauce anyway, and they gave me some of their house sauce. It made the flavor explore even more! This is a pretty new place, so I think it's still low-key, but it's definitely going to do well if it keeps up like this. read more

I had a medical test which required fasting, so I was in need of coffee and (hopefully) breakfast close by and Cantaritos Cafe was handy. Hubby and I decided to give it a try. Parking is plentiful in the Homewood Hills shopping complex. We were seated instantly and coffee came quickly. My breakfast was delicious and plentiful, as I got a quesadilla with scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon and fruit. Hubby was more adventurous, getting the "desayuno tipica." He liked it, but wasn't nearly as enamored with his breakfast as I was with mine. But, he had not fasted, either!
