We had dinner at Canton Village in Livermore, California, and it was a wonderful experience. My aunt, who lives in Livermore, brought us there since it's one of her favorite restaurants, and now I understand why. The three of us shared the House Special Dinner, which was a fantastic spread. It included fried prawns, egg rolls, barbecued spare ribs, Mandarin orange beef, prawns with snow peas, honey walnut prawns, and house fried rice. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The honey walnut prawns were especially memorable, and every dish had great balance and taste. The variety made it perfect for sharing, and we left very satisfied. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the overall dining experience was excellent. It's not exactly light on the wallet--the price is $32.95 per person as of March 2026--but considering the amount and quality of food you receive, it felt like a very good value. I really enjoyed this place and i think i found my new fav local Chinese food spot! I did one of the combo dinner meals where the minimum is 2 for most combos, but they also offer 1 solo combo as well. I think the combo i choose was $26/pp. In the combo it comes with two entrees, i got mongolian beef and replaced the kung pao chicken with sweet and sour pork, it also came with the soup of the day, fried rice or chow mien, and fried prawns & pot stickers. Yummy and perfect for 2 people! They also have extra add ons if you have 3 or more. Everything was delicious, i enjoyed all the onions and peppers in the beef and the sweet and sour pork was also notable in this meal. The fried prawns i wish the batter was a bit seasoned but the sauce helps. The service was great, we came a little before closing so we were like 2 out of maybe 10 people in the restaurant. The ambience was bright like traditional canton restaurants as well as booths and regular seating. I revisted this place for a lunch special later down the week and it was still great! I've eaten there for years. It used to be amazing. But lately it's gone downhill. Sizzling pepper steak was tough and warm no flavor. Sesame chicken had some good pieces and some that tasted spoiled (spit them out). Chicken fried rice was okay and the eggplant was marginally good. Dissatisfied and won't be going back anytime soon. There were no other customers present, and his tone made me wonder if we imposing on them before they were officially open. So I asked if they were open? Lol. Then he softened his tone slightly by replying yes, and asking for how many? I noticed as others arrived he didn't ask the same question and definitely not with the same "what the hell do you want" tone. Rather he greeted each of them with "hello, table for 2?" Hmmm. Ignoring that for a bit, we were hungry, and in preparation for placing our order we asked a question about a menu item - to which the server snapped at us - telling us basically that any "authentic" Chinese restaurant would prepare the item the way they do. Wow! Really? Again it was his tone. We contemplated leaving at that point but decided to try and make the best of the situation since we had done our research, liked the reviews, and already had our sodas, etc. In hindsight we shouldn't have stayed. The food wasn't bad except for the bbq ribs. They were extremely tough, full of fat, and we couldn't eat them. Even though we took leftovers we dumped them because of the memory of the experience. Honestly drove by this shopping so so many times never really noticed Canton Village until I had to pull over for a phone call. It's next to Trader Joes, Round Table and Michael's shopping plaza. On to the lunch and first impression. I was greeted right away not busy at all and got sat at any table I chose a booth close to the front. I was in the lunch special time slot so it that was a bonus . One thing noticed right away although the tables were clean they didn't have any condiments or hot sauces etc only one napkin and utensils spoon and a fork. Iced water was given right away I had to ask the server woman for black pepper, hot sauce because it wasn't readily available on the table . The Kung Pao shrimp was asked to be little spicy but it didn't have the dried out whole black/red peppers like it's supposed to. I have had better tasting Kung Pao shrimp in Downtown & in Pleasanton on Main Street .The egg flower soup was alright but overall the meal was just average Americanized Chinese food to me. Lots of to go orders were being picked up. They have a large banquet room, plenty of parking . Most important the value of the luncheon will probably have me come again to try another dish maybe at dinner time. We stopped by this restaurant on the way to Sacramento instead of going to the Ale House and boy was I disappointed. Rice is the main staple in any Asian restaurant and this was one of the worse plain rice I've ever had in my life of eating out. How can they not know how it make rice?!? First it was not piping hot as rice should be coming out of a rice cooker that stays warm. It was dry, hard, separated, and mealy. Now I've had all types of rice and this was VERY poorly cooked. Whoever cooked this one pot of rice should read directions on how to cook it or how much water should go into the rice cooker. This is not rocket science. I asked the young girl working there about it and she asked if I didn't want it...? No, I want rice, otherwise what would I eat my eggplant and Mongolian trio with? I asked why is hard and not hot? And she said they only had one pot of rice. Not sure what that means but hard cold mealy rice ruined this dinner. Who can enjoy eating anything with hard separated pellets that don't soak up any sauce be considered a good meal? Jasmine rice of high quality is fragrant, light, fluffy, and soft. Rice of any culture from Spanish, Japanese, or basmati is the highlight of any cuisine. Either learn how to make rice correctly, add more water, make a fresh batch but don't keep serving bad old rice. Ask ChatGpt or watch YouTube but to serve this rice at any restaurant establishment is plain awful. No wonder it was not busy on a weekend evening. Mongolian dish had way too many onions and not enough protein. Canton Village is a solid Chinese restaurant in Livermore! I'm so glad a friend introduced me to it. :) I recently visited for dinner on a weeknight and had no trouble getting a table. It seems like they do a lot of their business via takeout. The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. I ordered the Mongolian Beef at the waiter's suggestion. Rounded up 3.5 stars. The first time I ordered takeout from here years ago (pre-pandemic), it was a 40 minute wait. I decided to try them again after seeing good Yelp reviews. The food was ready on time. It's conveniently located near Trader Joe's so I was able to get some groceries while the food was being prepared. The best dishes were the General's chicken and the sizzling rice soup. The cha siu bao tasted a little artificial to me and the chow fun noodles stuck together a bit. Love Canton Village! When we first moved to the tri-valley, testing out Chinese restaurants was a hit and miss. Canton Village, however, has always been consistently tasty and we've enjoyed every time. Their menu has a variety of a-La-Carte options, but I especially like the pre-fixe dinners. You can choose a dinner depending on what dishes you want and party size. We usually order the Szechuan dinner for 2 and it's more than enough food to last us a couple days. Last night, (Christmas Eve) I took our family to the Canton Village for our annual Chinese Dinner gathering. We have done this for years. Although they were extremely busy and our wait time for our food after ordering was much longer than normal, when the food arrived it was steaming hot and cooked to perfection! DELICIOUS!! I'll be honest, it was a madhouse in there being such a popular spot and I we were a little concerned but somehow, they pulled it off! Staff is super friendly and great service. Food was average, not exceptional but we would come back due to the nice environment and friendly staff. The food was not too salty or sweet. Cashew chicken was pretty good. I like how there was bamboo shoots, water chestnuts in it which was refreshing. We ordered the 2 person meal with sweet n sour pork, cashew chicken w fried rice. We order from here on a weekly basis. This is also our go to when we have company to feed. They are tasty, consistent, and well priced. They are conveniently located in the center of Livermore so sometimes we just pickup the food ourselves. I recommend the Mandarin Chicken or the Green Pepper Beef lunch special. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4. Not my first choice for a quick Chinese lunch plate, but it's on the short list when my go-to place is closed. Bonus: they're open for lunch on Sundays and still offer lunch plates on Sundays too. Portions are sizeable. I ordered the broccoli beef lunch plate, and my lunch buddy had the Mongolian beef lunch plate. We should've read the menu more carefully as the default sides are fried rice and chow mein and a crispy wonton. We would've preferred all steamed white rice instead of the fried rice/chow mein combo. The waiter did not confirm the default sides were ok, but that's our fault for not reading. The lunch plate also included hot and sour soup. The soup's hot and sour properties were tasty, but overall too salty for us. (We still scarfed it down!) It was also a thicker soup and we would've preferred if it were thinner. Also, something I noted: we were given American spoons, not Chinese soup spoons for it. I enjoyed my broccoli beef well enough. The beef was large pieces; the broccoli and beef were cooked and seasoned well. There were some carrot slices too which were a little al dente for me, but acceptable. I did pick out a glob of congealed sauce, leading me to believe their sauce was not made fresh but rather, pre-made and refrigerated ahead of time. My lunch buddy said the Mongolian beef was sweet but that didn't deter her from eating it. The chow mein was good--not too greasy. The fried rice was fine. I wish the crispy wonton didn't come with sauce drizzled on it. Another note: tomato beef was not listed on the lunch menu. I'm sure I could've requested it, but I've learned that, especially at Chinese restaurants, if it's not on the menu, yes, they CAN and WILL make it for you, but it probably won't live up your expectations and will just be a letdown, so do yourself a favor and stick to the menu. read more

When checking out a new restaurant we usually go for lunch and order from the Lunch Menu. It gives us a chance to try one of our favorites & compare its flavor to other restaurants that we like. On our first visit on a Monday, I ordered the BBQ pork with Tofu, and substituted the rice & chow mein for steamed veggies. My hubby had his favorite, Prawns with Lobster Sauce with chow mein & fried rice. Our lunch plates was preceded by a soup. We chose the Hot & Sour soup. The veggies in my plate were crispy, tasty, and delicious. The tofu was firm, not soggy and was the perfect match to the sweet & tangy BBW pork. My hubby just said, "I like this place. This is the Lobster Sauce I like. I'm coming back. This place is really nice & we can have a party here." He was even more impressed by our check at the end of the meal! At the end of that week, we did go back with our daughter. He ordered the Prawns in Lobster Sauce a la carte! We also had a fish dish, eggplant with tofu (my favorite) in garlic sauce, and beef with veggies. Our dinner experience was just as pleasant & enjoyable as lunch. Venue was beautiful. The food was good we ordered potstickers , wings, Mongolian beef,House chow mein, orange chicken, and House fried rice. The service is good and the staff is friendly. But as soon as we took a break from eating because we were enjoying ourselves and having a great conversation, they came and asked us if we wanted a box for to go. I replied we were still working on our food. We order quite a bit of food so we were taking our time on eating and enjoying our food. As we continue to eat and chat, three more different staff members came and asked us if we needed a box for to go. I fell I was being rushed out of the restaurant like you go in eat and leave. There's no time to enjoy your meal or have a conversation while you're eating. I personally won't go back because I don't like to just go eat and leave I like to enjoy my food, and good conversation over a meal. I would understand if the restaurants are full and there's people coming in constantly and they need the tables . But the restaurant was pretty much empty. Pretty good restaurant, but could use some improvement. We ordered Hot and Sour Soup, Kung Pao Chicken, Sautéed Shredded Pork, Dry Sauteed Stringbeans and steamed rice. Everything was nice and hot, however the peanuts in the Kung Pao Chicken were a bit cooler than the rest of the dish and undercooked. I suspect the cook forgot to put them in with everything else. Their coolness and extra crunchiness definitely detracted from the dish. The stringbeans were also undercooked and a little bland. In addition, there were a ton of them, easily 4-5 cups worth, plus they were $14.95, way too many and costly (after all, they're just vegetables). Too bad they don't offer 1/2 orders or cut the size and price. There are other Chinese restaurants in the area and we'll keep looking. read more

Elegant and friendly. Went to dinner last night with my mother-in-law for Chinese food. She suggested Canton. Been at the old location down the storefront many times. This new location is even nicer and fair prices. Fried prawns for an appetizer is my normal go to. These were very well cooked and tasty. My dinner of chicken chow mein was good. Warm, well seasoned, and oh my gosh, so much in volume. Took half of it home for next dinner. My mother-in-low enjoys honey walnut shrimp and she was not disappointed. I would get again. 4/5 Mongolian Beef ($12.95) - The beef was thick and had sauce that tasted fishy so I'm guessing this was from fish sauce. I really hate fishy flavors. Lots of onions in this dish too and very greasy. 0/5 BBQ Pork Chow Mein ($8.95) - This was pretty good, they actually included big pieces of bbq pork which tasted really nice.
