I tried a few before reading good reviews of Capella and deciding to give Lisa Sexton a try. Upon our first meeting, Lisa was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made sure I was comfortable. After giving her little direction, Lisa brought out the best features of my hair, and updated my color to look more natural than my natural hue. I have been going to Lisa for over a year now, and each time she surprises me with her subtle changes that instantly update the look I've grown bored of. Lisa also does hair extensions of which I am the proud owner! I have never felt better about myself... if you're thinking about getting hair extensions Lisa is the way to go. I highly recommend Marlee! After doing some research and calling into the Capella salon to see who is the next best thing, next to the Curl Dr, Marlee was recommended. We both arrived early and she got started right away. She asked me what I was looking to do; I asked for more of a circular shape to my natural hair and she immediately got to work with the scissors. She was quick and she made the work seem effortless. Marlee provided me with advice and best practices on how to use certain products on my natural hair. Needless to say I love love love the way my hair came out and genuinely appreciate her advice on how to take care of my hair. She did an amazing job! KAREN is one of the things I miss most about LA! Before finding Karen, I was paying over $150 for a cut at a WeHo/BH salon. I have straight fine thin hair, so any flaw in a cut shows. The prior cuts (I asked for long layers) left me with face framing layers that created a "moon face," a la Jennifer Aniston in "Friends." Karen was not only professional, but also timely, super friendly, and most importantly did a PHENOMENAL job on my hair!!! Prices are reasonable, and there is free parking behind the salon near the pet store. She also cut a male friend's hair and did an excellent job. Ive found her cuts to be consistent- no "one hit wonder" hair cuts. Of all the salon's I have been to, from Philadelphia, NYC, LA, DC, + SF, Karen is hands down the best. read more

Yesterday I went to capella salon ready to spend a whole lot of money on my hair for the first time. I am biracial and have really curly hair that gets damaged from straightening it. After not getting my hair cut for a few years for fear of a terrible experience I decided to try out the deva cut by Andrea. And I LOVE IT!!!! She listened to what I want and styled it perfectly. I felt like she was so nice to my hair going curl to curl. She also gave me like a 30 minute wash! That was to die for!!! I just came here for the first time recommended by several of my friends who don't know each other. They all go to see Shai who is really good but he was booked about five months out. After seeing Jody's instagram, and seeing that they do similar work, I decided to go see her. I couldn't be happier. My curls have never been so tamed or hydrated. This is my first time not having a relaxer so I'm still learning my hair. She educated me about my hair, shaped it and trimmed it (I haven't had a trim in 2 1/2 years). I was worried she would have to cut a lot bc of my neglect but she didn't and said it wasn't too damaged, just dry. Anywho, I'll stop rambling. I'll be bringing my daughter in to see Jody next month. I am very pleased otherwise my experience from the customer service, timelines (2 hours), the outcome, and overall experience. It's worth the money. read more

My best friend is a Girl with Curls. One year, when I lived in New York and she flew in for a visit, her other friends and I chipped in and got her an appointment at the Deva salon as a birthday gift. Since she lives in L.A., she searched for a Deva-trained stylist and ended up at Capella. I've lived here now for a total of 5 years and never once have I had a haircut that put that bounce in my step and that smile on my face! They've always just been adequate. My sister-in-law is a stylist and I would always try to wait for her to cut my hair, but since we live on opposite coasts and I need more than a couple cuts a year, I've had to visit several LA-area salons. In total, I've been to 8 salons. Frustrated, I asked my curly-haired friend for the number to her salon, since she was so loyal and her cuts and colorings always looked great, even though I don't have curly hair. It's thin and mostly straight. I received my best cut, by far, from Adrian at Capella. I hold all my stylists up to the standard my sister-in-law set, and Adrian met it very easily! I sat down in her chair with an overgrown, badly-executed, A-line cut that had been finished off with thinning shears. Did I mention I have thin hair? The previous stylist even left one side of my hair about 2 inches longer than the other. Rather than go back to her, I just dealt with it until my next cut. I was expecting to have to lose some length in order for Adrian to be able to "fix" my hair issues, but she managed to pull off a beautiful, easy-to-maintain, symmetrical, a-line cut that still frames my face and which definitely put a bounce in my step and a smile on my face! I'm sad that I have finally found her and will only have time for one more haircut before I relocate to another city! Parking is easy, Starbucks is next door, and everyone I came in contact with was super-friendly even though it was clearly a very busy Saturday. I would give it 5 stars, but I'm reserving that for my sister-in-law. :) For those of you with curly hair wondering who cuts my best friend's hair, I believe her name is Megan and from what I understand, she is Deva-certified but has limited availability, so book early! I went to this salon for the first time for a balayage highlight. I had gotten highlights at different salons many times but I was never totally happy with it, it would always come out this weird orange color. I am absolutely in LOVE with the highlight I got at Capella and I've gotten soo many compliments on it. I've been wanting to go dark again for months but I just can't give up these highlights. I can't remember the name of my stylist which is a shame, but I think it started wtih an S, might have been Zsofi! The customer service was also great! Came here to brag about Dani who took my hair from truly gross and weird to amazing. I had a... tragic thirteen year long relationship with box dye, and after a full year of growing it out and not touching it with any color, I was able to reward myself with a new lewk from this young master. Dani wouldn't touch my hair previously because of the shape it was in, which is an important thing to note because it shows that she cares enough to be honest about what your hair can handle and not let you jump into something and risk further damage. After a year of root growth I went in to see her to start my blond journey. I showed pictures of what I wanted, and instead of doing exactly what I asked and not discussing it again, we had an ongoing conversation about my end goal based on how my hair responded to the chemicals in real time, and I ended up with something I loved even more. Listen to the pros, people! They've seen it all and probably have a better idea of what you want than you do. I love this salon! My texture went from damaged frizz to ringlet curls. I've been twice so far. For my first Deva Cut, I worked with Madison. She was awesome, super experienced (about 7 years at Capella). She made me very comfortable with the amount of hair we needed to take off (but I was also an easy client, open to whatever it would take to get my hair on track!). She worked to frame my face, and the cut from start to finish was super fast. After 2 months, it didn't grow in as well as I expected it to. The cut was a little boxy and I had trouble styling it after a while even though my ends were fine. After 4 months I went back. I would have gone back to Madison but she was booked so I saw Janaye. Janaye was a touch less experienced than Madison (in years) but I think because of that she took more time / care with my hair to make sure it was absolutely perfect. She worked to get every single dead end. She also took more time (without asking) to explain how to style my hair differently, walk me through the different options and ways to frame my face, explained the difference air drying vs. sitting under the dryer makes on hair texture, how to achieve more or less volume, etc. She asked me what my long term hair goals are and came up with a strategy on how to achieve it. Most importantly she explained that Capella Salon's policy is that if I'm even a tiny bit unsatisfied with the cut I can come back within 2 weeks for a re-trim (not that I needed it). I left feeling more knowledgable and that I really had a stylist that cared about my hair. I'll be going back to Janaye, but Madison is great too! read more

I haven't been here in almost two years but decided to write a review because I know that when I got my deva cut here it was the best decision ever. They educated me on how to properly care for my hair and the cut that I received helped me grow my curls out into a nice healthy head of hair. I've since had to start all over due to damaging products and heat that I added to my hair but I'm on my way to healthy curly hair again. She has been doing my hair ever since. I have had her cut, color, and perm my hair and always been happy with the results. She is also very sweet and has great energy. I've been seeing Madisen at Capella for about 4 years. She is incredible with my long, blonde, thick hair and understands cutting even an inch off can be hard for me. She is fabulous at keeping length but shaping and giving my hair new life. My hair cuts are nothing short of glorious and I usually walk out looking similar to Victoria's Secret supermodel hair. I've seen her finish up appointments with many types of hair, and both men and women clients. She is also very good with color, blow outs, doesn't push products but will give product suggestions if she thinks you could benefit from it. I highly, highly recommend her. read more

I had my scheduled appointment with Shai about a month ago, and have been sitting on this review until I could get a good grasp on the condition of my hair post haircut. For those who have never had a cut with Shai--you must book three months in advance and put down a deposit for your timeslot. I've never been to such a high end salon so this was my first time booking an appointment in this way. I can see why they do it though--so many people want to see Shai, his time is valuable so why schedule appointments to people who won't show up? I arrived for my appointment after washing my hair in the morning and waiting for it to dry completely as instructed. The receptionist told me not to style my hair with any oils or butters prior, the reasoning for which I'll explain later. I was welcomed by an employee and offered a choice between water and tea. I chose the tea, and oh my goodness, after tasting it I knew I was in for something special. It was seriously the best iced tea I ever had. I waited for about ten minutes before Shai greeted me and instructed me to change into a frock provided by the salon to have my hair done. After changing, I sat at Shai's station and got my long awaited Devacut. I've never had a Devacut before, but after going natural for the past 10 years it seemed I was long overdue for this treat. Shai had his station decorated with old medicine bottles, and he had a book on caring for bonsai trees sitting on top of his counter. This made me smile, because it seemed indicative of someone who takes great care in his craft and has a fondness for beauty. The haircut really is curl by curl. He quickly snipped all around my head, taking each curl, stretching it slightly, and cutting as needed. I told him I wanted to keep my length as I'm trying to grow my hair out from a botched bob I got from another salon over a year ago, and I believe he managed to do just that. My hair still has considerable length from after the cut, and I don't miss the bulk he cut off. After an hour cut, I was taken care of by his sweet assistant (whose name I can't remember, but she's the one with the big smile rocking a huge afro) who styled my hair. This actually took much longer than the cut. She washed my hair and deep conditioned it with Devacurl products, explaining each step of the process to me in great detail. Capella salon really wants curly peeps to take care of their hair! I will say that I disagree with a couple things that they did, though I didn't express an opinion during the appointment. First, I read the ingredients on some of the Devacurl products. While they don't contain heavy oils and butters that simply coat the hair without adding moisture, they did list cetearyl alcohol as one of the first ingredients. All cetearyl means is that the alcohol was made inedible, not that the alcohol was made good for your hair, so I skipped purchasing any deva products. Second, some heat was used to dry my virgin hair. I don't diffuse or anything at home, I just air dry, so this took a toll on my hair after my appointment. Don't get me wrong--your hair comes out almost comically perfect after a trip to Capella, but when I washed and styled my hair as usual after the appointment, I noticed my curls were more frizzy and lifeless than before. It took a few weeks for them to bounce back. Is it as bad as mechanically flattening your hair with an iron? No, but it's something to consider skipping if you don't use heat at all to style your hair. The process of just drying the hair was also very long. Good if you want the perfect curls on Shai's IG, but unnecessary otherwise. These personal criticisms aside, it is 110% worth it to get your hair done by Shai, even if it's just once. If you're thinking about going natural, or have been natural for a while and have never had someone take care of your hair as if it were fine silk instead of wrestling it like an old rag, take the plunge! read more

I arrived for my haircut with Carmen 15 minutes early-- she was 15 minutes late. She did call the salon 10 minutes after the start of my appointment to inform them she was late. Meh. She arrived and we got to business. I told her this was my first time getting a color and a devacut. She asked what products I used because my hair was in such good shape. My response Suave $0.99 from the dollar store. She was shocked. She proceeded to do a curl by curl cut and added layers to my length. She choose a chocolate highlight color, which you can't see when the hair is wet. Honestly, she did fine, HOWEVER, I will say my curls looked the exact same before and after the appointment (minus it was shorter and depending on how the light hit you may or may not see color). Would I go back -- absolutely NOT! But not because she did anything bad ... just because I swear this service was not worth over the $300 I paid. read more

I moved to LA about a year ago and one of the first things I needed to do was find a new hairdresser. I picked Capella based on a number of high reviews on Yelp, and was set up with Karen. Couldn't be happier! Karen is a smart, easygoing stylist. I told her how my hair is usually cut (standard men's cut, I suppose -- closely cropped, pushed forward on top) and she knew instinctively what to do. Capella has a good vibe. I recently went in to get my roots done and Claudia did a fantastic job. The location is convenient with a lot of free parking. It's on the top floor of a shopping center and it's a lot larger then it appears from the outside. Claudia's chair is by the wall of windows so it was really nice and relaxing. Claudia knows her stuff she took one look at my hair and started mixing away. My color looks amazing and blends well into my natural color. She also did a rock star blow out, that I totally wasted since I only went home afterwards. Luckily the next day I actually ventured out and got a couple of compliments on my hair. Claudia is incredible and talented plus she's super sweet what more can you ask for in a hairdresser? I highly recommend her. read more

Per usual it was very clean everyone was super nice even the other clients waiting on the couch with me to get their hair done. I just really feel the need to tell everyone about our experience at this salon ! Me and a friend of mine had been following Shai on IG for about a year ,I ended up moving 60 miles away from LA for an assignment so we made plans for her to fly in from Alabama at least 2 months ahead of time putting down out $75 deposit each (he charges $225 per head ) well I get a call the day before to confirm our appointment . We were so excited to be getting our hair done by him . My friend flew in the day before (she paid $500 for a flight ) and we headed out early that morning since we had to drive a distance to get there . On our way there we get a call saying he won't be coming into work because he had been sick for the last 3 days from catching something from his son . And if we would like another hair dresser to cut our hair . We told them we would decide when we got there since we were close by . We were pretty upset at the fact that this was very UNPROFESSIONAL ! We never had a heads up as to him calling out for 3 days (which she could have done when she called the day before ) then said we could reschedule as if my friend didn't pay for a $500 flight to get here to get her hair cut by him . We understand people being sick as we work in the medical field & take care of sick people even when we aren't feeling our best ,but can't excuse Unprofessionalism ! We got to the salon and explained to the receptionist our situation . NEVER ONCE raised our voice ! We told her if we would have called out sick they would probably have kept our $75 deposit and this is not ok to call a hr before an appointment to tell us or anyone in that case , something you most likely knew In advance . So the receptionist now says he caught the flu from his son . My friend has had the flu before so we really didn't want him around us so we decided to let Marley do our hair . He gave us $25 credit and a hair product for free . We were ok with that and thanked him . Marley was super sweet and we ended up loving our cuts ! FIVE STARS for her ! We thought everything was fine until I'm sitting in the chair and scroll online as my hair dries I see a post he puts on IG . talk about someone being tacky and again unprofessional! Are we 15 year old girls ?? He goes online to say how he had clients yelling at his receptionist and it's not his fault he got sick from a CLIENT that came in last week . Wait I thought it was his son . Someone needs to get their story straight . Then he calls to see how everything went after we left the salon . Which would have been a nice gesture if he wasn't bad mouthing us online while we were STILL IN his salon ! He knew we followed him in IG and would see this bc he asked my friend to post a picture and tag him when we got done ! I think I would have gave this place a better rating if the owner wasn't so back stabbing , tacky and unprofessional . He was never really sympathetic to the fact she came from across the country . Never really sincerely apologetic . Some people really do get the big head when they get a name for themselves and he's a prime example of that ! We were really disappointed with him! I am sorry to say I did not have the great experience many others had at this salon. They called me the day of my appointment to move my time slot with Shai 45 minutes later than scheduled. I said "no problem!" - I had taken the day off from work so it was not a big deal. I arrive at the salon, and wait about 30 minutes for my stylist. He was finishing up his client and then had other issues to deal with in the salon. He did acknowledge me when I first came in and took a quick look at my hair. He also showed me where to put on my robe and where to wait for him until he was finished. Once he was done with his other duties, he came to the station where I was sitting and talked to me for 3 minutes. His advice was for me to go home, use some "better products" in my hair, and e-mail him a picture of my hair in about a month or so. He would then advice me on whether or not I would be ready to have my hair cut ... Really?? I think for the $175 ($75 which you pay before coming in, as a deposit) which this salon charges for the super amazing "Deva Cut", they should at least be considerate of their client's time. I wasted the whole morning preparing for the appointment (as they want you to come in with your hair washed, dried and styled) and wasted the rest of a day I could have spent at work. When making the appointment, I explained to the person on the phone about the condition of my hair and how inexperienced I was with any type of curly hair styling. She could have told me then to e-mail them a picture... Even my stylist could have saved me the time I spent waiting for him at the salon as soon as he saw me. I have no idea why he even made me put on a robe. Only gets 2 stars since the salon is really nice inside. read more

I read all the reviews for Shai and thought he'd be great. I was wrong. I went in for a consultation a week before my appt., and I felt like he thought I was nuts and wasting his time. The day I go in, the receptionist shows me where the smocks are and then tells me to go to Shai's chair. I had no clue where Shai's chair was and he did not come down to get me. So I show him a picture of the bob I want and he won't do it. I am not sure if he didn't know how or if he really thought it wouldn't look good on me. He takes all of 15 minutes to cut my hair dry all the while trying to sell me the Deva products in his salon, then sends me downstairs to get it washed by a new assistant who had no clue what she was doing. He then disappears. After she's done washing and pinning my hair she puts me under a dryer for like an hour and forgets about me. I look in the mirror and she's getting her own hair washed by someone. So finally his other assistant comes over and takes the dryer off me and takes the pins out of my hair. It was parted weird and was crispy. So $110 later, I would say it wasn't worth the money. The people were not very friendly, my hair didn't look good and I felt guilty for not buying any hair products. Don't Go Anywhere Else but the Best! I have been seeing Shani (Shai's sister) for a few years for Mink lash extensions. My "after" lashes are long and full and so natural looking, you wouldn't be able to tell they were extensions unless you knew me before I had them. She's the best of the best, and in fact is a certified trainer for other beauty professionals that seek certification in the lash extension process. After going strong for 3 years, I decided I should probably take a break from extensions and see what my real lashes looked like under there. So, I did. And guess what? They still looked the same (no loss of fullness, just short boring lashes). So, eventually, I wanted to get the lash extensions again. Much to my regret, I decided to try a service provider I found online that was offering a too-good-to-be-true flash sale price. $49 for a full set plus the first fill! Since the place was close to my house, I thought I'd give it a try. Not realizing how much it is an art to do proper lashes, I got my deal, and HATED them. In fact, my cheapo lashes started falling off before I could make it home from my appointment! Immediately I called Shani and confessed and made an appointment for a full set. She removed all the gunk and chunks of glue still left on my lashes, and applied a full, beautiful Bambi-worthy set of long, natural looking lashes.
