If you'll notice in the pictures her hair was beautiful to begin with but needed some refreshing and a good haircut from someone who knows how to cut curly hair the right way. I was given this hair cut as a graduation present and waited 3 months to get it done. I was disappointed with my hair cut not because it looked bad, because it was nothing that I wanted, and I was shamed the entire time I was in Shai's chair. It started off with him getting upset with me because I washed my hair the night before, since my hair takes an upwards of 5 hours to dry I couldn't take it in the morning and show up with dry hair, and I do not own a hair dryer. He listed off other professions that do not get 'such disrespect'. He said you wouldn't show up to your gynecologist without taking a shower right before right? I understand that he may come across a lot of people that he thinks are being rude by not 'respecting his profession', but as a girl who has never had her hair professionally cut, ever, it's an honest mistake to think that your hair being dry for a dry cut is more important than the amount of hours ago it was washed. I told him multiple times that it was my first time in a hair salon. He also accused me of ignoring multiple phone calls to tell me how to care for my hair before coming in, and I told him it was a surprise from my dad, so I didn't get any calls. He proceeded to yell at his receptionist from behind me about how they need to do better at what he asked. So great, now I'm in the middle of the salon, everyone can hear him yelling at people and it's all my fault that they're getting in trouble...Then he went on to asking me what I did to take care of my hair and I let him know that I didn't have anyone to teach me how to take care of my hair because no one in my family had hair like mine. He went on shaming me for my hair choices, even after I said well I'm trying to take better care of my hair. Then when he asked me for reference photos I said I want to go short, like above the ear, but I don't know what will be flattering on my face. I showed him some photos, said I just wanted to emphasize my cheek bones, and he just flat out said 'no, show me some long ones'. I showed him the 2 long hair photos I had and then he said 'ok' and started cutting my hair. I understand that maybe I didn't sound so confident so maybe he didn't want to hack off my curls that take forever to grow. But maybe instead of just saying no, he could have explained I'm not comfortable doing that, and I could have defended my view. But when a professional who is giving you short unamused answers tells you flat out no and moves on to something else it's very intimidating to argue. I mean, this guy is going to have his scissors in my hair. The entire time I felt uncomfortable because he worked with a frown and I tried a few times to have some light hearted chit chat but he didn't converse very much. The ladies who washed and dried my were extremely nice. They taught me about my hair, what I should look for in products, signs of damage, how to properly massage my scalp, got me tea, conversed and asked me questions, etc. If it wasn't for that part I think I would have left in a rage. These hair cuts are NOT cheap. After drying Shai fluffed my hair and had another frown because it was curlier than he expected because of course, I didn't have my hair properly dried. I didn't mind it because I wanted shorter hair, but he intended it to be longer. After leaving the salon my hair was great and stayed curled for days longer than usual. I told myself, I guess I can deal with it and it just gives me 3 more months to find better reference photos because apparently non of those sufficed. Of course salon magic does not last and after washing it and not having a professional hooded drier my hair was only a fraction of an inch shorter. Sure, it looked fine and it was a better shape, which I did want, but it left me very bitter. Now I'm looking for other salons that will actually listen to what I want. read more

I'm a girl with curly-wavy hair and after dealing with years of hair stylist cutting my hair so that it *only* looked good when straightened (fried), I decided enough was enough. I had to find a curly hair guru. And boy did I find one. (spoiler alert) My hair turned out FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Venue: The salon is modern yet inviting. It is SUPER clean. Oh and the best part: the chairs you sit in while you they wash your hair are MASSAGE chairs! YEERRZ! Hairstylist: I had my hair done by the Shai Amiel. I was actually pretty nervous to go to Shai for my hair because I was very aware that he does fancy shmanzy celeb haircuts on a regular basis.......and I worried that he wouldn't care about my peasant hair. BUT nothing could further from the truth. From the moment I met him, he was INCREDIBLY down to earth, friendly, and genuinely interested in helping me with my hair disaster. He was very attentive and immediately checked with me to see whether I wanted to keep my hair long or whether I was ok chopping the length if it was needed. (having survived numerous hair- massacres at the hands of stylists, i thoroughly appreciated this). OMGosh!!! Cecii Ceci Ceci. Obviously, I've have had curly hair my whole life. I've either had to relax my curls flat iron and press or cut my hair down to an inch to mange my curls. The deva is my new go to style for my long hair. The stylist Ceci, did I say Ceci? Is such a professional. She answered all my questions even the ones I didn't know to ask. Ok so this is the first review I have ever wrote. Its not really my thing but I just can't help myself anymore. I'm going to try and keep this short so I'll make a little list. !/ I was so excited to get my hair done by Shai. I had been following him on IG and I will admit that the name "curl doctor" sold me. 2/I was a little shocked when I found out he charged $250 a head but I was already sold on the idea of him doing my hair. 3/ The salon it self is very nice. 4/ Shai is his biggest fan. Right away he spoke about how many followers he had on IG and how good he was. 5/ I got the dry cut ( in theory it made sense but in real life its a VERY BAD idea. He asked me if I ever wore my hair straight and I said sometimes. He gave me a dirty look and asked to see my IG. He found a pic of my hair straight and said "no good'. I thought it was because it was bad for my hair. NOPE. Its because once you get the dry hair cut and try to straighten it, it will be completely uneven. 6/ The man does not listen!! He thinks he knows whats best for your hair and will do what he wants. I told hime it took me years to get my hair that long and I'd like to keep it that way. HE CHOPPED IT OFF!!!! 7/ When I washed it and styled it the next day it was so uneven. Dry cut my ass!! I could go on and on about this. Shai, Shai, Shai! This man has magic in his fingers! I went in yesterday afternoon to have my color and heat damaged hair cut my the Curl Doctor himself. This was literally the best hair appointment EVER! So here's the nitty gritty: I had my virgin black, 3B/3C hair dyed in December 2013 (I don't know what I was thinking) and did not like the way the color looked on my now wavy hair. As a result, from that time until February 2014 I applied excessiveheat to my curls (blow dryer and flat iron) which damaged my hair even further. I had straight pieces of hair mixed in with wavy hair. Thank God for social media- I found Shai on IG and promptly booked my appointment. The entire staff is friendly and incredibly helpful. Shai is warm, extremely knowledgeable and honest. He asked me what products I use in my hair, gave me a crash course in choosing quality products (which was SO insightful), and asked me how short I felt comfortable going with my hair before going to work. Shai and his assistant Taylor answered all of my questions and showed me how to achieve my curly look at home. I was nervous to see my hair after the cut as I had so much damage in it. Let me tell you- Shai gave my hair LIFE!!! My stringy, lifeless hair was now bouncy and looked phenomenal! I've never been more excited about the results of a hair cut! My friends and family could not believe how amazing my hair looked! A few of my girlfriends even asked if he had used a curling iron on my hair! With pleasure I replied, "No boo, that's my hair! I would never let anyone other than Sascha touch my hair. Not only is she an amazing stylist, she is a really wonderful person to boot and brightens my day every time I come in to get a cut or color. She always listens attentively and does exactly what I asked for. Plus, she's got a really great eye and offers up the most helpful suggestions when I'm feeling indecisive so I always leave her chair feeling great about my hair. She's fantastic with color--has done really fun stuff to my hair with wild colors, as well as natural tones. She also gives me the best haircuts for my face shape, and really knows her way around a pair of scissors and a buzzer. Shai did an AMAZING job with the curl by curl haircut. I am a curly girl who ALWAYS straightens my hair. I have been interested in a while in getting a curly cut however was pretty scared to actually commit to it. I read a lot of reviews about Shai and finally decided to go for it. I was pretty embarrassed when I walked in because I knew how damaged my hair was and thought Shai was going to instantly judge me and make me uncomfortable. He did the exact opposite. He explained to me WHY the heat was making my curls so damaged and gave me much hope that I could bounce back from it with proper care going forward. He made me feel super comfortable and really listened to direction of not wanting too much cut off (I ended up changing my mind and told him to work his full magic and am happy I did). Shai was patient, answered all of my questions and his complete love and infatuation with curly hair made me appreciate and love my curls even more. The outcome was AMAZING. Greeted by the host, was offered tea, water or coffee. Waited about 10 minites before i was seen. Shai was very warm and friendly. Educated me about my hair and products I was using. Cut my hair curl by curl. One of his assistants took me back for a wash etc. only con about her was she finger detangled my hair root to ends. Which I'm more comfy ends to roots. Other then that great experience. I thought the process would take about 2 hrs + but was there 4+ hours. Parking was free and easy for me luckily. I loved how my hair ended up. I went in for a haircut today with Kristen and let me just say, her attention to detail is PHENOMENAL. At Capella, they do the scissor over comb technique and even though it's more work than just whipping out the clippers and going to town, the cut looks way better and it grows out beautifully. Kristen is a great conversationalist and has been with the salon for 8 years, so she really knows her stuff. I sought out Capella because I recently chopped my hair and it looked like an awful and flat triangle (unflattering is putting it very mildly). After seeing so many favorable reviews that cited Lena's genius, I made an appointment in the hopes of her fixing my botched bob. Not only did she take the time to discuss my ideal look (and realistic expectations), but she also instructed me patiently and thoroughly as to how to achieve this look once I got home. She artfully cut my hair and it emerged beautifully. I literally NEVER KNEW my hair was full on curly! That's what happens when a curly girl has hairdressers who peripherally cut curly hair instead of expertly cutting and especially UNDERSTANDING HOW to bring out the hair's natural texture AND its true, best look. In addition to being a highly skilled, well informed stylist (and clearly inspired and passionate about her work), Lena is a fantastic human being. If there were a way to give negative stars, I would My appointment, MY FIRST EVER AT THIS SALON, appointment was Saturday at 11:30. I had called the day prior, and the appointment taker asked for a 75.00 payment, this to be deducted from my final bill. No explaination why, no quote as to the final bill amount. She asked questions about my hair, saying finally Kristine would do a dry cut since, and I did say this, I had hair that would benefit from this type of cut I show up at 11:30, see a sign that clearly says no children, unless they have an appointment, or for safety reasons dogs. Second thing I see is a child. On the couch, with her toys strewn on the couch. I!m told Kristine will be right with me. 11:35, 11:40, finally at 11:45 I am told she's parking her car. She WASNT going to be right with me, she wasn't even there, for a first time client, she didn't care enough to show up on time, 11:50 she sails in, half assed apology, the kid is still on the couch, with her toys. I walk over hair that doesn't match either of the people who will be my neighbors. She asks if I want anything to drink, I'm HOLDING A STARBUCKS CUP. I change, show her an idea of what I want, she says lets get your hair washed. I sit there so pissed off, I can't speak. Finally, I say I was told it would be a dry cut, so far she hasn't even touched my hair to get a feel for what with what she would be dealing. She then says we can do that, if you want. I WANT a stylist that is respectful of my time, and has a clue of the appointment that was made. As I have typed many times. THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME THERE, I went because the reviews were good for difficult type hair, I'm beginning to think they were bought, and paid for reviews. I don't get up, then say, first you were late, then there is a child, now you're telling me different than what I was told the night before, I also tell her that this has started very badly, and I don't have a feeling this is going to get better Not even another half assed apology, she says yes, let's get you a refund. THEY HAD ALREADY CHARGED MY CARD FOR THE 75 DOLLARS. She walks up to the desk leaving me sitting there, and no one, not even the desk people apologize. No one. NOT ONE PERSON GAVE A DAMN THIS WENT SOUTH. I ask for the salon owner, I am told he's not in (on a Saturday???). I was given his name, and email. Not one damn offer to have him contact me. Not one damn offer I thought about keeping this off yelp, but it has now been 8 hours, so no one has contacted him to say A FIRST TIME CLIENT WAS TREATED BADLY, they don't care, I don't care. I will continue, if asked, to tell this story should the salon come up in conversation. Never, ever, going back, recommending, or going to have further discussions on this. I have been going to Shai, the Curl Doctor, for almost 2 years now and my hair is the healthiest it has been in years. I was guilty of using crimping irons, pressing combs, blow dryers (with attachments) and my hair suffered because of it...it was lifeless. My hair lost its volume, so I decided to go heat free. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. That's what you get from Eyelash Guru, Shani Amiel. I've seen a 100 dollar eyelash work, and it is not pretty. When I realized I wanted the "I woke up like this" look, I did my research. I don't mean go on yelp and just read the reviews other people have written... But, literally study the materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach to a conclusion. When something so delicate like the eyes, you bet your ass I'm going to find out every little thing there is about eyelash extensions including the shape, size, length, color, weight, brand, and of course the person who is going to do it! Duhhhh! After carefully doing my research, I found Lavish Lash Trainer, Shani Amiel who has her own business in Studio City (Capella Salon). I could not be happier with the result! I'm pretty much hairless everywhere, and my lashes are even more hairless, unfortunately (damn Asian gene). It takes one talented person to sit there for hours separating EVERY. SINGLE. LASH. Thanks to Shani, I finally do "wake up like this"!!!!! I've received so many compliments saying how fantastic and natural they look! Shani totally took control from the moment I told her "I want it to look natural, but still look fab at the same time". She mixed a few different sizes, and colors to really blend it with my little baby lashes so that it doesn't look like I've cut strip lashes and glued it to my eyes, lol. Believe me, I've seen a lot that look like that, so be aware of the places you go to especially, if they're doing it at a nail salon. I returned to Capella to have the infamous CG cut. My stylist was Marlee. She's very warm hearted and skilled. My hair had an awful shape. The ends were thin, a few curls at the back hung long while the middle was bulky a clumped and the front looked weird every which way I parted it. I guess the appearance somewhat resembled a mullet on 4a hair. It was just an awful shape. Also very tangly with all the thin and split ends. Marlee took 1 hr to cut my hair. The shape is so great now. She told me the back part was all different lengths and that I had a ton of split ends. I started to get nervous be it sounded like she was saying I had bad hair and I thought she was going to just f it up cutting it. She didn't. She did a great job and it now has a more asthetic shape. It's so cute. I wish it were longer but whatever hair grows back. The ends feel thick and healthy and it's much easier to part my hair now wet or dry. I will say this, although it is a great cut I think the prices are too high but that's life. read more

Capella Salon - Shaped ascetically, just what i asked for - Hair Salons Near Me - Studio City, California

So Shai wrote a reply to my review, and offered to restyle my hair, and show me that Capella is better than the one-star experience I had to endure when I was in last. Nice gesture, right? WRONG. I emailed Shai back to take him up on his offer, and HE NEVER GOT BACK TO ME. So his offer was baloney. It's all show, so he can look good here on Yelp. He doesn't really care about customer service, he's just paying lip service to it here on Yelp. And notice how in his response to my review, he oh-so-subtly puts the blame for my bad experience back on me, by saying I should've contacted the salon to tell them about my bad experience right away, instead of posting a bad review? As if, since I didn't contact them, there must be something shady about my experience, and maybe it wasn't "really" as bad as I said? Kind of a slimy way treat a customer you want to come back, IMO. Unless of course you don't really want them to come back. And, obviously, Shai and Capella don't really want me to come back. When I contacted him about coming back, he never got back to me. (Yet he says in his response that I should've contacted the salon if I was unhappy with my experience; why, if they would've just ingored me anyway?) So Capella and Shai get one star for very poor customer service. I wish that Drea, the only decent stylist in the place, worked somewhere else, so I could go to her without having to patronize Capella. Keyonna showed no regard for me or my hair's needs, and was not professional, and Shai doesn't really care about customers' being treated poorly and only pays lip service to customer service. He cares more about blaming customers for customer service problems than making customers happy. Capella is a disappointment. They charge way too much (a cut with tip will cost you at least $150, and you will feel annoyed that you're tipping for mediocre service more often than not) for not treating you right. read more

A TERRIBLE experience at Capella Salon with a hair colorist called ALEX. She was rude, unprofessional and should take a few lessons on basic customer service. Alex had me wait for over 45 minutes and when I asked when I would be seen, Alex was defensive and rude and telling me she cannot rush her client! she turned on me! it was surreal. I had simply asked when she would be ready since I had been waiting for so long. Alex made it out as if it my fault and that I had been late (by 8 minutes and I had called to let the salon know - and they told me not to worry). The owner was no better: he had seen me wait and saw how polite and patient I had been and Alex in turn accusing me. All you guys had to do was to communicate, offer me may be a glass of water and be polite. As it is I am appalled by your terrible service (both Alex and the owner) and will for sure let all my contacts know of your terrible service. BASIC CUSTOMER SERVICE - take some lessons. read more

I got a cut here about 6 months ago so I'll try my best to remember the details. I didn't initially like my cut. I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror terrified that I just made a $175 mistake. But I think my hair has an issue with Devachan products...or at least the way they were used that day. It looked and felt dry. It was a little better when I used my own products and a lot better after I gave it a few weeks to grow out. To be fair by the time I made my way to Shai I had gone too long without a haircut and I had a damaged section in the back from a cold winter in a foreign country. The shape he gave me really helped me to grow out the damaged section. I also felt like he listened to me (a quality that is all too rare in hair dressers) and didn't cut more than he had to. I would go again, but probably not until I can once again justify spending that much on a college student's budget. read more

I love love love this salon! I first met the Curl Doctor (Shai) back in November of 2015 when I had a Curl-emergency! In September of 2015, I wanted to "jazz" up my hair a bit with some color and I wanted cut off my dead ends. So I had ombré done to my hair and I straighten it after so that I could trim it. As most curly hair people are taught, we never cut our hair when it is curly only when it's straight.... Boy was I wrong. After I washed my hair from it being straight for 3 weeks (yes I pushed it to its max)... My curls were GONE!!! Like seriously GONE GONE! I panicked and washed my hair a few more times in hopes of my curls coming back but NOTHING worked. So I decided to do some research and I stumbled across Shai, the Curl Dr. I made an appointment and that's when my curl journey started. Let's just talk about to salon first... Capella Salon is a beautiful and well kept salon with a super professional, talented and nice group of people as its staff ... I mean as soon as you walk in they offer you a beverage :) After I checked in, I was immediately greeted by one of Shai's assistants and then introduced to the Doctor... Shai. Shai is super sweet, down to earth and completely understanding. I explained my curl emergency to him and he unfortunately gave me the diagnosis that I wanted to avoid... "You need to have all the dead hair cut" he said to me. I freak out because I've always had long hair and I had no idea how I would look with a short hair cut. He (being the super nice guy he is) assured me that a short cut would look good on me but he also told me that if I wanted my curl pattern back to normal, all the dead hair would have to go... After holding back tears, I told him "OK! I trust you! Let's cut it... " and then he began to cut... But this was no ordinary cut... He cut every "curl" individually... I was so impressed with the precision and to the detail that went into this hair cut. After the cut was complete, Shai's assistant took me to the back to wash and style my hair... After I was done all I could say was "WOW!!!" Not only did he get rid of all the dead hair that was weighing down my curls, he brought my curly hair back to life! Although my curls weren't completely back to their original state yet, I knew I was on the right path and I knew that my curls were in GREAT HANDS! This is just the beginning of my curl journey ... I am going to be visiting Shai every 3 months for a hair cut and I am staying away from heat and bad hair products... I can't wait to see where my hair is a year from now :) Shai... I've been coming to Capella for around 15 years, have loved the stylists I've worked with there, and finally landed on the one that stuck: Lisa! My old stylist moved cross country and I was handed over to Lisa who more than met my expectations. For the last 7 years I have trusted only her to cut, color and style my hair. Every time I come in and she asks me "What are we doing today?" I always answer the same: "Whatever you think!" and she never disappoints. Lisa's cuts are so precise, she actually closes her eyes and feels the hair to know that it's perfect! I confess that my absolute favorite part of my sessions with Lisa (besides her engaging personality and quick wit) is her amazing scalp massage - Heaven! Natali is amazing! She's been my stylist for years and she just moved to Capella. I really love it; the salon is beautiful, very clean and spacious with lots of natural light, and free parking in the back- a big plus! She's an expert colorist, over the years she has taken my hair from brown to blonde and back and every time the color has been beautiful; and most importantly, it never damaged my hair! She really is a perfectionist when it comes to color & highlights, I completely trust her anytime I want a color change. The last few times I've gotten balayage color which is one of her specialties, I've gotten tons of compliments on it and I love that its low maintenance. I have been fortunate that I haven't had too much trouble finding a stylist that can cut and style my curly hair. But when it comes to color I have been less satisfied. I find the color is either too dark and my complexion is washed out or the highlights lift too much of the red undertones in my hair. My visit with Jody was amazing! She didn't have the easiest job either - I came in with years of old color from a hand full of different stylist. This was first time I walked out loving my hair color! The color is golden caramel with enough of my natural darker base. The way she placed the highlights is also very practical for my life style as I wear my hair back often at work and go longer periods before cutting/coloring my hair due to it being curly. Shai was recommended to me a year ago by one of my naturally, curly friends. I noticed her hair was looking healthier with flawless curls everything I saw her so I became inspired to get back to my naturally, curly roots. After having so many Brazilian blow outs and straightening treatments involving heat, I expected that my first appointment with Shai would result in a pixie cut. He was honest with me and told me that the ends where my hair was over-processed would have to snipped but to my pleasant surprise, I left with a cute curly bob, with more length than I expected! Fast forward a year and a half later, my hair has grown and my last visit I had him place highlights. He uses products that are safe and curl friendly and he knows the limits as far as how light you can go without risking unnecessary damage. Finally I've found a hair expert I can remain loyal too. I have been to Capella twice and both times Andrea cut my (3b/c, 4a) curls, both times I have been extremely satisfied. I know that Shai is the Curl Doctor, but trust that he also employs other stylists who know what to do with your curls. I started with Andrea about 8 months ago when my hair was much shorter. Since then, it's grown quite a bit and started to tangle a lot. I went back last weekend and couldn't be happier. read more

Today I got my hair cut and styled by Shai and an assistant. I know it's a process once you go natural, but my hair was heavily gelled and oddly straight/wavy when I left. I felt like different styling or use of another product could have helped me feel like I got something worthwhile done to my hair. I liked my hair way more before I entered the salon! Hopefully some DIY styling will help. Nevertheless, he's nice and careful, as are his staff. read more
