I went in by myself on a Thursday evening, as I was in Lubbock (and at TTU) for work meetings, and sat at the bar for a beer and dinner. Three employees -- servers and bartenders -- were working the place, as it was summer and school wasn't yet in session, so while most tables were filled, the bar had empty seats and a couple of tables were still empty. TEN MINUTES I sat at the bar before I was even acknowledged, and that was because the two guys next to me, who'd been there at least that long themselves, finally asked for menus, and so I said, "I'd like one, too." The guy got me a menu and I decided on what to order. Set the menu down, and another 5+ minutes went by while the servers dealt with other tables and even other customers at the bar. Now, we are 15+ minutes in, and finally the guy who got me the menu asked if I wanted something to drink. I ordered a beer, where he could have TURNED AROUND to enter it in the register and pour it from the tap, but he went to another table and I didn't see him again for another 5 or so minutes. At that point, I'd had enough, and I left. I would have enjoyed trying the pizza and enjoying a beer there. The place had a cool vibe and the food looked and smelled good, from what I could see from neighbors. But the dismissive attitude of the staff who must actually have looked THROUGH me (I was at the very center of the bar and I'm pretty sure I'm not transparent) and having been ignored for about 20 minutes was enough. Went down the road to Flippers Tavern and had a wonderful experience there! Sorry, but if you can't even acknowledge your customers when you're busy but not slammed, you don't deserve my business. Maybe it's because I'm an Old Dude and not a young hipster or college student, but it was disappointing and frustrating. Bottom line: skip this place, especially if you're over 35 or so.

The sauce was particularly off-putting and gave me a different kind of nostalgia than I thought I would get eating here. It reminded me of eating Chef Boyardee vlin microwavable bowls as a kid. I was told that after taking the leftovers home and trying them the next day, they were even worse reheated. I didn't have that misfortune myself as I was done with it after the meal. The service was adequately good, but there was no crowd like I would have expected, and it's easy to see why. I'm fully aware of the reasons things may have gone a different direction (specifically downhill) at One Guy's and that there are now more options in town. I just hoped that this location still had some of that pizazz that made it special. Sadly, I was disappointed.

Our first dining experience at Capital Pizza was a bit of a mixed bag. From the time we walked in it was clear the restaurant might have been a bit understaffed. We noticed many dirty tables and there were only two college-aged waitresses serving the entire dining area. They were sweet and tried their best to keep up with the demands, but it was evident that they were overwhelmed. It took 21 minutes just to get our drinks. When the tea finally arrived, it was disappointing- it tasted like dirty water. Then, it took 44 minutes before our meals arrived. Unfortunately, the salad we ordered was missing. After pointing this out, it took another 12 minutes before it was brought to our table. While we were grateful for the waitress's kind demeanor, the overall service was painfully slow. As for the pizza itself, it was quite good, with a yummy crust. However, the long wait and the service mishaps left us questioning whether the experience was worth it. Not! read more

This place is good enough to make a lactose intolerant dude keep coming back. The place itself isn't greasy- clean enough to see your reflection in a table, last I checked- but it is a quintessential greasy spoon. There's a variety of beers to suit anyone's taste and match with any of a cornucopia of great pizzas, and if it has a fault, it might be described as too popular: last time I went there, it was full to capacity. we love having a neighborhood bar and the word gourmet is thrown out there to hide the fact that theres really nothing gourmet about it. Half the ingredients we want to add they never have. Recommend calling ahead since the pizza takes MUCH more than the 15 minutes the servers say it takes. Wi-fi is a joke. Faster at the coffee shop. Probably 3 stars all around 4 stars because its the only bar in tech terrace. read more

She has been hyping up this joint forever and during this trip to her hometown, we ended up there on our first night we were in town. On the outside, it looks like the typical university food joint that could be at any university town across America. It was small with a few tables and booths and had stuff across the walls that yelled TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS so loud that it could be seen from the ISS. Apparently, the owner is a big fan and possibly an Alumna of TTU. We ordered the hand dipped mushrooms and onion rings to go along with our burgers. Little did I know what an experience the two appetizers would be. Lets just say that I have NEVER has such wonderful shrooms and rings ... ever. Thats saying something. The mushrooms are not the typical soft, mushy ones that many places serve out of the Sysco bags ... no, these were easily identifiable as button mushrooms even through the crispiness of the batter. Firm, sliceable and easily skewered by a fork to be dipped in ranch sauce. In short ... they were lip-smackin good. The onion rings, dipped in the same batter, cooked in the same oil and served at the same temperature were just as delectable. They were thick sliced sweet yellows that held their toothiness throughout the frying process. Just the bite into it was yummy, sweet and crispy ... all at the same time. These reminded me of the onion rings I used to get at Tookies down in Seabrook, Tx during the 70's and 80's. For my main, I chose the "Hotter than Hell Burger" with crinkle fries. I like hot and spicy and expected it to actually be hotter than it was. The sliced jalapeño and habanero spread were present and did the job of letting my taste buds know they were doing their job. It just wasn't the knockout I was expecting from a burger place serving university students that would eat really spicy stuff on a dare. Don't get me wrong, that burger was really good, just as my Wife said it would be. That statement is truth, not hype, but hotter than hell, naah. More like hotter than heck. My biggest disappointment was the limited selection of good beer. Light beer, cheap lagers and Mexican standards. Would it hurt to put in an IPA or a Stout? Overall, the staff were wonderful and answered any of the myriad of questions I had about their fare. It was an actual experience for me, especially after all of the hype my Wife told me over the decades. Usually, after a big span of time, places from our youth let us down. Spanky's is NOT a place like that. I will be sure to make it there on the next trip to Lubbock ... even if my Wife isn't with me. Ciao, Darrell
