I had a very restrictive timeline and they were able to schedule an appointment to fit that. Communication with the company was excellent. Very responsive and they kept me updated on the progress. The workers were nice and very professional. I dont know much about chimneys but it seems evreything was done well. I was a little worried because there was a lot of debris (they had to rebuild part of the chimney) when the work was done. And some got into the flower bed that was right under the chimney. I just got my chimney repaired with Capitol Chimney and it looks great! I had a yearly inspection with them and they noticed that the pre-fabricated fireplace box was rusted, so unfortunately that needed to be replaced. The marble around the mantle was something that we wanted to change for a while so we also replaced that. They replaced the fireplace box along with the metal lining from the top to the bottom of the fireplace. They had to remove the mantle and cut out a large portion of dry wall to do everything. The original marble was one slab but they installed white marble tile, which looks fantastic. The job took 3 days. The workers were professional and efficient. It was a bit pricey 11k when all said and done. But given the amount of work done, seemed reasonable. I would recommend them for future work. read more

I needed a repair done to the outside back staircase railings of my house. The base of the railings and my house are made of brick. A friend recommended them to me since they repair chimneys and chimneys are made of brick so I contacted them. They were flexible when I had to cancel an initial appointment due to scheduling. They came when I was available to observe the work and completed it within an hour. Robin and Jesus were very professional and allowed me to watch their work and they laughed at my dry jokes while the mortar was still wet. In the end, the railing was secured and they put in new bricks. They made it look easy. I am confident that they can create or repair anything with brick. Abraham and his associate arrived right on time (both wearing masks), and they were quick, effective and efficient. I also asked whether I might need a chimney cover. Abraham said it wasn't needed, and he told me why - and showed me pictures he had taken of the chimney (while on the roof). I learned that the prior owners had put in a terrific product that closed-off the chimney when it wasn't in use. With that, a chimney cover wasn't needed. Great to know! I prefer family owned businesses. We had a brand new house with a very fancy gas fireplace and only two years after we bought it, the fireplace stopped working. (A huge concern since we had not used it much at all and our home warranty was over). The owner Roger came out and for various reasons, our fireplace turned out to be a nightmare puzzle. Adding to our problem, our home builder had installed a fireplace model that was old enough that it complicated things. This fireplace company would NOT GIVE UP until our fireplace was fixed. They only charged us our initial payment and said if they could not fix it-it would cost $8-10k to replace. We got a second opinion to verify what we were told. We are kind of annoying "we will wait but we will not give up on fixing it" people! Roger and his employees were extremely friendly upon every visit. We probably had one of the most difficult fireplace mysteries the guy has ever seen in his career but HE FIGURED IT OUT. He did not charge us a dime after the initial visit. We tried to tip him and he refused (as is proper when dealing with the owner of a business). We offered gratuities to his employees who worked for hours. Even they attempted to refuse and we insisted! I believe honesty, reliability and work cannot be valued enough-so here is my review. Terrible customer service, communication, and understanding of what needed to be done to complete the job. I had received a quote and agreed to a price to have a prefab chimney and fireplace installed. After the agreed to price and down payment, 2 weeks prior to the job starting they came back and stated they under quoted me and I needed to pay an additional $1500 and on top of that I would need to hire a third party to finish the job on the mantle. Either that, or go with an even more expensive option, still have to pay the extra $1500 and hope for the best with the mantle. They came out to my house in February of this year (it is now October) and took the measurements; this should have been all well and understood and included in the price we agreed to. This could have been communicated ahead of time and set my expectations accordingly. After all this, they would not honor our agreed to price and had nerve to apologize for getting their information wrong thus leaving me in the lurch to find someone that could be trusted. read more

We moved into a new home in which the chimneys for the fireplace and the furnace/hot water heater needed work. We knew from our home inspection that the hot water heater was backdrafting and that we likely needed new liners. We found Capitol Chimney Service through Consumers Checkbook and had a great experience with them. They clearly and promptly communicated with us throughout the process about scheduling and the work needed and their crews always showed up during the windows they provided. They had initially said they had to schedule our work a month or so out but then squeezed us in sooner when an opening popped up. The work (new liners, new chimney caps, and repointing of the fireplace) was only done last week but so far it seems to be performing well. The fireplace looks great and has already been put to use. They cleaned and waterproofed my chimney. They did a great job on the chimney, but the sealant they used permanently stained and ruined my roof. If you use them--and you have a roof that can be seen from the street--make SURE that they tarp the roof or rinse it with your hose immediately. I spoke with the chemical manufacturer and they recommend tarping and rinsing because they say the chemical will stain asphalt tile. The manufacturer also said the stain may fade after a year, but it did not fade at all. The company took some $$ off my costs, but I will have to replace the roof--all of it. read more

We are a veteran military family. In November 2014, we hired Capitol Chimney Service to install a stainless liner and replace the chimney crown as the old crown was badly weathered and needed replacing. We paid $1700. When the chimney guys said they were done, I noticed that they were hooking up our woodstove to the liner with our old elbow and immediately asked why we were not receiving a proper tee so the chimney could be properly cleaned and installed. The installer told me that it is not needed and the old elbow was just fine. Since that time, we have had Capitol Chimney Service out to clean the liner, which the guy did from the inside creating a huge dusty mess. Again I asked him why we did not get a proper tee installed, and again they claimed it wasn't necessary. Just this last winter, we had another chimney service come out to clean the chimney. They immediately told me I need to have the crown replaced as it was cracked from front to back AND we needed the required stainless tee in order to be assured of our safety. Since I knew Capitol Chimney Service had done the work a few years before and I knew it had a warranty, I called and told them there was a serious issue with the crown they had replaced and about the missing tee. When the guy for Capitol Chimney Service came, he said the chimney had creosote build up and the liner warranty was no longer going to honored by Capitol Chimney Service AND the tee was not necessary. I knew right away there was a serious issue with the service we received from Capitol Chimney Service, a service we paid over $1700 for 5 years before. I called the office and explained the issue. I was told by the "manager" that a tee is not necessary in most cases, which is 100% the opposite of what another chimney service recommended and every other source of information I read online about how a stainless liner was supposed to be installed. After spending about 25 tense minutes with Capitol Chimney Service manager, I discovered that Capitol Chimney Service did NOT even provide us with the proper chimney crown we paid for initially. Much to my surprise, she came up with every excuse as to why we weren't provided with the service we paid for and made us feel as if this whole affair was our fault. Not a single apology!! I insisted they provide us with the stainless tee in order for us to have a proper installation to our woodstove. It is now February 12 and the tee was finally dropped off and now we are forced to hire another company to come and finalize the install Capitol Chimney Service started over 5 years ago. I do NOT recommend Capitol Chimney Service. They have proven to a veteran military family that they are not honorable and that they do not provide proper timely service. I hired Capitol Chimney in 2014 to repair my chimney leaks. They completed the work and over the ensuing 5 years, rain water leaked into the interior wall adjacent to the fireplace. The reason for the leaks is that Capitol did not properly install flashing around the chimney. I am rating this company A for the work they do and for their prices which seem quite reasonable. I had our chimney rebuilt and the fireplace repaired as well. I will give them a C for organization as the people in the office are disorganized and are not good about returning calls in a timely manner or even answering the phone during business hours. Trying to get any response from the online contact us form proved useless as no one seems to get those. My guess is they are overwhelmed and connecting with contractors via web or email never seems to work-makes me wonder why they even have web based contact forms. Capitol Chimney has cleaned my woodstove chimney for several years and they always do an excellent job. They are quick, professional, efficient, and always show up on time which I really appreciate. Chimney cleaning is a messy job and other companies I've used have left bits of creosote, etc. on my carpet.
