With apologies to Steven Wright: I went to a restaurant with a sign that said they served breakfast at any time. So I ordered French toast during the Renaissance. So it is at the Capitol Diner. It is great that it's a diner, and that you can get breakfast on the cheap with all the coffee you can drink 24 hours a day. But the food is really just fine. Personally, I thought the potatoes and french toast were weak. We ordered the potatoes extra crispy, and we got some story from the waitress about not being able to get them extra crispy, but here they are just a little bit crispy. I do believe she was looking out for our best interest, but still. And I believe french toast should be intensely eggy, and not just lightly coated in an egg batter... even at a diner. Incredibly overpriced, $4 for a small mug of hot chocolate with no refill, and $4 for a lemonade that was half water. Took 20 minutes to get a new cup of coffee after the first one tasted burnt, and our waitress tried to give us food meant for the table next to us. I spent the weekend at Hershey Park with one of my best friends and she was so excited because we were near what she deemed the best diner ever. I was really surprised by the ratings and reviews on yelp because I had a good meal here and my friend, who's come on multiple occasions when driving through PA absolutely loves it with nothing negative to say. I ordered the eggs Benedict which was really good. There was so much hollandaise sauce I was able to mix into my homefries which was delicious. My one friend got a waffle with fruit another got the croissant sandwich, and the last ordered pancakes. Two of us got the capitol fries as their side which is something I highly recommend. Capital fries are loaded with gravy on top and honestly I don't know what's in the gravy but it is super delicious. Menu options include anything a traditional diner would have. I looked forward to a diner staple, chicken pot pie, and luckily, so I thought, it was tonight's special. Disappointingly, it the worst chicken pot pie that I have been served in a restaurant. First of all it was a "pie" with no pie shell . Instead it had soggy thick noodles. Secondly the chicken was as touch as leather. Lastly there was a limp tasteless liquid in which the rest sat . As far as diners - this one is pretty standard. However what stood out to me over other local diners, resulting in four stars, was the cleanliness of the Capitol Diner. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We didn't have to wait for refills and she stopped by the table frequently enough. Side salad was iceberg lettuce with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. The chicken and rice had large chunks of chicken but we wish we would have ordered a bowl rather than a cup. Buffalo chicken wraps had a good flavor with a generous portion of chicken. Great breakfast-I was really hungry and ordered too much food. The place looks like a juke box or old time pin ball machine. I ordered corned beef hash and eggs with house potatoes (sliced) and sausage gravy. Just a ton of food. I took out about 3/4 of it. Good coffee too! Good diner food done in the traditional stock way. Reliable choice. I got the Capitol special, which is two eggs, two pancakes and a meat. The eggs were pretty good. They had a uniform mouthfeel. Exactly what you'd expect from a diner. The pancakes were very generic. Quite bready and uniform in mouthfeel with little complexity in fats or crust. The sausage was super salty and greasy. Once again, exactly what you'd expect. This place isn't going to win any James Beard awards, but it's not a bad choice for breakfast. The food was all decently executed. read more

This is not a place to go if you want a quiet spot to reflect on the weekend's events with your colleagues and friends. The place is packed and loud. They make the most of the dining space because I don't think they could add any more chairs to the big dining area without creating problems with carrying food around. Even the booths are intimate affairs. In the off-hours, it is fine, however. The Capitol Diner has a big menu and you can count on the food to be prepared well. Some people like personable, friendly service. Me, I'm not a fan of chatty service full of personality. That's an extra point for this diner as our order is always the start of a tactical operation rather than the start of a spectacular culinary adventure. Of course, the wait staff might approach a trio of dusty weirdos in trenchcoats smelling vaguely of sulfur and goat's blood with a little more caution than your typical family of four. It's my fault, really. It was convenient to our client's hotel (The new Indigo on Eisenhower) and the client hates Bob Evans "with the passion of a thousand blood-gorged incubi" (I told him he should put that into a Yelp review.) He had to make his flight out of Harrisburg and so - Captiol Diner was the only option for us. Lady Matilda, Captain Carl, and I had JUST secured the old French manuscript for our client before dawn in the basement of an abandoned Steelton row home. Unfortunately for us we had to dispatch several Guardian Wargs and a zombie pit bull, so we were less-than-lemony-fresh upon delivery of the artifact. Our client didn't care. He was barely sober and would be unconscious again soon after being poured into his seat for his trip back to Boston. The server was a little reserved with us, more than usual, I guess. But the eggs were fluffy and the bacon crisp. The client enjoyed his baked oatmeal. This place was so gross. Our waitress was not friendly. Our food was awful (see picture of the open faced turkey sandwich). The gravy was an unsettling yellow. So gross. Both me and my co worker were left with multiple trips to the bathroom after having eaten there. When I went to pay, the cashier rudly allowed someone to pay before me, simply because she was paying with cash. She wasn't just leaving the $40, she wanted change. When it was my turn to pay, there was no "how was your meal" or "thanks for coming in". This was a terrible experience from beginning, to end. Resist the Shiny exterior of this place. Have been here many times and the food is always good. However, they recently decided to no longer carry Sweet & Low, for me, the only Sweetner that gives iced tea the flavor I like. No other Sweetner does that. Am I being persnickity? Yes, but, as I'm paying for my food and drink to be prepared the way I like it, I have that right. Now, we usually have Sweet & Low with us, but we had run out and had not replenished our supply. We made the assumption that Capitol Diner would have it. If you disagree with me, I really don't care. Son and I went to Capital Diner for something different. We started with Capital fries, which is fries with gravy and a slice of American cheese. It looked soft and brown but my 15-year old loved them. It didn't look like a lot but it filled him up, and he only ate half of his lunch item consisting of southwest chicken wrap and onion rings. Onion rings were not crisp but look delicious. I got the Philadelphia chicken salad, which was pretty decent as it had fries on top. bottom line. Typical diner, somewhat reminded me of the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster, PA. Came here with a group of friends and everyone was satisfied with their breakfast/lunch! Two of us had pancakes, another had an omelette, another had eggs, and the fourth had a chicken sandwich. No complaints and everyone was happy with their food. Even though it was packed and had a party of 6, we only waited about 10-15 mins before being seated. We went on a Sunday and even though it was packed, I still got a spot. The wife and I were attending conference "up the hill" at the Red Lion hotel. Their food offerings and restaurant availability left much to be desired, but we found the Capitol Diner on our first day there and had most of our meals there during our stay in the city. The food was very good, and prepared as we asked. Service was top shelf, with the servers remembering who you were as well as being prompt, friendly and professional. The setting and decor was above that of the diners we ate in during the 60's and 70's. One of the worst meals I've had in a loooong time. We ordered french onion soup, pirogies and steak salad. I sent the pirogies back, they were dried out and hard as a rock. When she asked what was wrong with them, I picked it up and tapped it on the table. I told her that a pirogie isn't supposed to do that. The soup was ok and the salad was gross.
