I pretty much stick to the basic menu, but over the years I feel like something's have changed as in the bacon seems cheaper, and for an order of eggs they pile the cheese on which is too much for my taste. I stopped by for a late lunch while en route from PGH to New Jersey. I wanted to stop for lunch in the vicinity of Harrisburg, given that it was the halfway point of my trip, and I wanted to avoid the dreadful fast food options that proliferate close to highways. A billboard on the Turnpike reminded me of this place's existence (I'd been once before), so I decided to make a foray off of the Turnpike to get some decent non-fast food. While I saw sorely tempted to order a breakfast dish, given that it's a diner, I decided to go with a sandwich instead. The Yelp reviews alerted me to the fact that the crab cake melt is a popular choice, so I asked for it, even though I couldn't find it on the menu. The waitress informed me that it's usually offered as a Fri. special, but she checked and the kitchen was willing to make it for me, so I decided to order it ($9.95). As part of my order, I also had a cup of potato soup, which reminded me of Eat 'n Park's potato soup. Given that I attended HS and college on MD's Eastern Shore, my standards for crab cakes are higher than most people's. I'd classify Capitol's rendition as okay, but not necessarily good. It was served as an open faced sandwich with slices of white American cheese melted on top over inexpensive wheat bread. While the crab cake was filling, it didn't have lump crab meat, and I could tell that it had quite a bit of filler. Then again, this is a diner in PA, not a high-end restaurant in MD, so I suppose I should have expected this. The tartar sauce helped give it some flavor, however, and appeared to have been made on site. While I wasn't particularly impressed by Capitol's crab cake sandwich, it was still a step up from anything I'd have had at a rest stop. Therefore, I'd say this diner is worth a detour off the Turnpike if you're in the mood for a decent meal. It was 7 pm on a Friday night. The place was busy but not packed and I was asked for smoking or non. I chose non and found myself in an open dining room with booths lining the walls and tables in the center of the room. There was a large group of people near the back wall celebrating what appeared to be someone's birthday, and the rest of the room was peppered with white haired people and small families. Eating alone, I was given one of the smaller booths from which I could people watch or absorb myself in the puzzles and games on the paper placemat in front of me. I was in town on business and I went based on the reviews of other yelpers. After finishing my dinner, I wish I had ordered breakfast instead. My meal was so bland and unmemorable that I can't even remember what I ordered- even though I remember that two young men and their grandparents were sitting at the table next to me. The food could definitely use some seasoning- but perhaps the bland favors are more accommodating for the crowd that comes for the Senior Discount. I've definitely had better diner food. I do have to give props for the excellent service I had in the dining room, and I will say that the mix in the fountain soda was perfect. If I'm going to drink my calories, at least I want them to taste like they're worth it. If I were in the area, I might go back a second time to try breakfast, and maybe I'd have a better review to write then. read more

I went here for lunch today. It was my first time. As I glanced through the menu, through all the different choices, I decided to get medium well done London broil with gravy on my French fries. (My dad's from Ireland so 'm half Irish so that's what they do in Ireland with their French fries) The portion size was perfect. Not too big or too small. The London Broil and French fries were delicious. The gravy tasted yummy even though it was a tad thick. The waitress was very nice. Always came to check on us. Came here for breakfast before heading to Hershey Park and I do not regret it. As stated, came here for breakfast to "fill up" before heading to Hershey Park to avoid overpaying for their park food. Everything is pretty much diner standard from the menu to the seating. The waitress was friendly and the place was clean. Our breakfast was well made and hit the spot as it was intended to do. Location and Food are great. That's it. It's very close to Hershey and the service was quick. The food was good. We had the country fried steak and 2 orders of French toast (2 slices each) a side of bacon and one OJ, 3 tap waters. Total cost : $35 That's the end of anything good. We are visiting Hershey, my family of 4 which includes a 4 and 6 year old. We are greeted with somewhat of a grunt and then taken to our table. The server came over, asked for drinks and I answered that I wasn't sure because I didn't know if I was going to do lunch to breakfast (it was 10:35am). She says she'll come back and my girls say thank you. She comes back about a minute later and I couldn't find the kids items on the menu and asked her where it was on the menu. And she tells me it's a separate menu and pauses. And then says "oh, do you want one?" Yes, please. She brings it over and it's just lunch stuff and I ask my husband to go ahead and order while I look it over. I say to the girls - are you sure you want breakfast and the server says, "well, the kids breakfast ends at 11am so you just missed the kids breakfast" I pick up my phone. It's 10:40am. I hold it and very obviously look at the phone then back at her and say - it ends at 11? "Yes, so they can't order breakfast." She answers seemingly annoyed. Okay then. Well I know we can still order breakfast off the adult menu because my husband just did it. So I order the kids one classic French toast to share and then I look for the very cheapest thing on the menu and order it. Our food comes. As I mentioned it was quick and pretty good. Apparently though there was a change in how servers are getting paid and taxed because the crew sat at the servers station talking about money and how they can't afford to work there, the tips aren't enough, etc etc. I saw about 3 tables have to come over to ask their server for their checks so they could leave. We got our check, paid the cashier who also was very unhappy to be at work took our check and left. Here's the thing. Writing this out - is it the worst? No. In a time when there is no shortage of places to eat, the food does not make up for how rude the staff is. I would not suggest going here. read more

Ordered breakfast, till we got our food if was cold, eggs, p otatoes,toast, French toast, sausage patty was like eating a ice cream sandwich. Bad food nobody cares. My friend and I would stop buy when we were in the area we loved it. Hot Roastbeef sandwich until the last time. We walked out in the middle of our meal and never went back. The guy telling the waitresses what needs done and he would seat you and give you a menu. He was the most disgusting person I ever saw working in a restaurant. I was eating and looked up front and he was talking to a big group of waitresses and the whole time he was digging in his nose. I swear this dude had a good size nose but it looked like he had at least half his finger in it digging around. I can't believe the waitresses didn't walk away when he was doing it. I should have recorded it on my phone but it made ne sick seeing it and just thinking he handed me a Menu with that hand. We got up and left all our food on the table. After a day at Hershey Park, my family came here for a quick dinner before rushing off to another family event. I was pleasantly surprised that on a Saturday evening in the summer, we received quick and friendly service and the food was good. You never know about diners. Some are worthy of Guy's Triple D while others, not so much. This was solidly in the first category. I had stir fry and it was as good as I could have made at home. As in, the veggies were still green (not brown or mushy) and the sauce was tasty. My kids enjoyed their meals too and our server treated them extra special, despite being busy. Even the wine was acceptable. Limited selection, but hey after a visit to Hershey, mama needed a drink and wasn't too picky! Side note, the parking lot was packed on Sunday morning so we couldn't come back for breakfast on our way out of town. Sad! Mixed bag here. We were a large group (16), so they assigned two wait staff. Sadly, they didn't work well with each other, and some in our group were continually ignored and not allowed to order or be attended to because the staff thought it was the others job. The food was hit or miss. I had the open faced roast beef which was very good. My wife ordered the Chicken Cordon Blu, which was a frozen store purchased meal that was all processed food. I'm surprised they took the plastic wrapper off before microwaving it. The waitress even commented that "some of our food is real home made stuff, sorry you ordered something that wasn't". My wife had only had one bite before she had enough. The staff never offered anything else, or to take it off the bill. I suppose we could have made a stink, but with 16 people in group we didn't want to make things worse. The look of the place was cool, but we went for food. I'm amused by the reviews for this diner... it is a 24/7 diner. Diners are not known for their consistent and superb servers, food, waiting times, etc. Most of my high school memories consist of ending some event such as football games or prom and coming to this diner and as long as you get the breakfast food, you're fine. I've dined all over and come back here because the breakfast is pretty filling and I don't leave feeling like a greasy POS. If you're getting steak and wondering why it's bad, consider the fact that you're not at a steakhouse. The same goes for anything else! If you have a complaint about something, your best bet is going to the manager and not writing a review that none of the staff will read lol. My husband and I love diners and were thrilled to find one near the Harrisburg airport so we could have breakfast before our flight. What a disappointment! I had French toast which may have been good but was cold by the time the waiter brought back the refrigerated butter and the syrup which also must have just come out of the refrigerator. We like cream in our coffee and used it all with the first cup, the waiter came by and refilled our cups without asking (I hate that) and then had to go get more cream and only brought enough for one cup so I let my husband have it. I was passing through the area and having grown up in the Philly area am a big fan of diner food. I'll start with the positives. My server, Lauren, was fantastic. She was attentive, friendly and did her job exceptionally well. Also, prices were reasonable and the establishment was clean. Now for the negatives. As several other reviews mentioned, the food seemed to be mass produced in a factory environment and just reheated at the diner. I ordered the Hamburger Steak. It appeared to be a frozen patty cooked on the flat top. How hard is it really to just take a handful of ground beef and plop it on the grill, sprinkle some seasoning and then present a nice home cooked meal. Diners are also usually well know for their baked goods. I ordered a piece of Banana Cream Pie to take home. It was horrible. Tasted like fake banana pudding (with no bananas at all in the pudding). Two little pieces of dehydrated bananas were placed on the top of the whipped topping (was not real whipped cream). Seemed like they just picked up a frozen pie at Sam's Club. I suggest they drive over to Perkin's in Camp Hill. Buy a Banana Cream Pie there and then witness what a Banana Cream Pie should be like. read more

For the non-bar crowd, this is a great late night stop for some greasy food and hot coffee. I even met my now-fiance here for our first date over brunch. The Capitol Diner has less of a dive feel than other diners, but still maintains the charm of a bar to sit at, with a dessert display case, constantly flowing fresh coffee, and friendly servers. I bought gift cards to the Diner at Christmas time, and ran into a language barrier with some of the staff. It was a frustrating experience explaining my desire to buy a gift certificate or gift card, but management quickly sorted it out. I'd recommend ordering your bacon done crispy, if that is the style bacon you enjoy...it can be a bit limp here. The same thing with your hash browns/home fries. As strange as it may sound, the pierogies here are great. They fry them and serve them with nice, well cooked onions in butter. If you are looking for a nice breakfast for a reasonable price, this is a good bet. Just expect a busy crowd and a wait if you come in on a Sunday morning. Almost got a 5, but got a 4 because... I've been here once before and got breakfast for dinner. This time I went for lunch with my friends after a performance. The food was great. I got the 10 oz Sirloin with a side of Home Fries and Rice. The rice was seasoned nicely, the Home Fries could use a little more flavor, but here's the reason I give this place a 4. My steak. I ordered my steak Medium Well, which is how I've been eating my steaks and burgers for a while now. Parts of my steak were cooked Medium Rare and not Medium Well, and I didn't get to the rare parts until later in my meal. So I think I'm not gonna order the steak again as other places that are normal run of the mill diners like this one have given me the same problem. Other than that, the rest was pretty nice and it was affordable for what I got. The space is pretty big for big parties too. I will try something else here next time though. My husband and I frequently dine out. We decided to give the Capitol Diner a try since we were nearby and love diner food. We were incredibly disappointed. We completely understand staffing shortages so we never complain about waiting a bit. The potato skins were burnt with a too solid layer of cheese and burnt bacon. The "pepper jack" burger I ordered was underdone with the wrong ingredients. Our waitress was even complaining about the kitchen staff and them being slow. Lastly it was waaaay overpriced for the quality. We will never be going here again and recommend you try elsewhere. read more
