This local coffee shop is tasty and has great company. I will say though, I think the baristas need a little more training. Specifically with making iced Americano. It's important that you fill the cup half way (or less) with cold water and then dump the hot espresso in. After that you can add a bunch of ice. [I was a barista for ten years and trained many people]. We've been coming here for years and order the same thing But we never know how the drink are going to turn out as of lately. I think the baristas are just dumping the espresso on the ice and then adding water? The problem is getting a luke warm "iced americano." The last thing that I will add is that one time my breakfast sandwich tasted like cigarettes. This is a nice little coffee shop, looks like a good place to hangout, study, do work or just meet friends for coffee. I stopped in about 10 minutes before closing time and got a iced mocha and a raspberry white chocolate chip muffin. The coffee was pretty good, the muffin was okay. It was a bit dry but still tasted good. Service was decent, helpful when I asked for directions to the shop across the street that I blindly wandered past somehow. While the apology is appreciated, it is insulting to be called a liar: in particular, the thermos had just been washed when brought in (which is how I found the blue piece in my sink). I have conflicting feelings about Capitol Grounds. The baked goods, sandwiches and breakfast items are decent. Nothing to write home about, but nothing you would complain about either. As far as their coffee goes, I have only had their lattes, breves, and the drink called "Capitol Chill." The coffee drinks are not the best I've had, but they are good enough that I gave CG 3 stars instead of the 2 that were my initial rating. The Capitol Chill is the one item that I would dub excellent. It's an ice-cream drink blended with coffee that is perfect in the summer. The venue is comfortable, albeit small. In the summer they have outdoor seating with umbrella-shaded tables which is quite nice. The indoor seating is limited and it's difficult to get seating during busy hours. This is not the place to go for intimate conversation, but is suitable for casual get-togethers. The real problem with this place is the service. The staff, on average, are brusque to the point of being rude. Their desire to cash customers out as quickly as possible trumps customer service and general courtesy. One such example is that I once attempted to pay with a gift card that turned out to be one of their old ones that didn't work with the new system. The associate ringing me out didn't know how to process the tender, and the manager who showed her how to do it acted completely exasperated with being asked to accept an older gift card. They are consitently unwilling to make substitutions or take special requests, and when they do so, it is entirely without grace. read more

I have been coming here over a week. Before today, I hadn't stayed all day by a long shot and plenty of regulars here stay for hours at a time, not buying more than two or three items, and aren't being told their trouble. Yet today, after reporting to a waitress that a guy was in there with a DOG (a bloody health hazard), I was suddenly told by said waitress that I was gumming up the flow of traffic* merely by sitting at a table like all the other customers who stay for hours at a time (I am not even usually the longest-staying customer). Again, I am not ever usually there the entire operating day like she was so quick, and incorrect, to complain about. Today was merely an exception to the rule due to the weather. I am homeless and so I can't just go home to get dry clothes. I have to wait to leave a given place until it stops raining or at least lessens a lot so I am not sleeping and traveling in wet clothes. She even had the audacity to complain that she could hear me when I was talking to someone. Um DUH, no shit, lady, IT IS A PUBLIC CAFE of course you are going to hear people!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention the prices are outrageous. I wouldn't pay these prices for totally organic and it's definitely not. Four bucks for a single donut, almost 13 bucks for a single, SMALL burrito without a single side, ten bucks for a SINGLE SLICE of avocado toast, etc. The only thing worth the price is the coffees and are even those worthwhile if the staff/service is so "entitled"?? * I could understand this broad complaining I was gumming up the works if I was walking around all the time, hitting up strangers for talk, etc. All I do is occasionally go out for a smoke LIKE I AM REQUIRED BY LAW TO DO. But all I am doing is sitting at a table overall. I don't see how this entitles this broad literally, yes, going out of her way to COME OUTSIDE while I was smoking, to complain to me about my behavior. After a hard day of skiing what would be better than a nice mocha or hot chocolate.... Well the answer is one that tasted good and was served quickly. I don't think I am too $tarbuckified to no longer appreciate small independent coffee shops. I liked the ambiance and setup of the shop, but I found the wait to be to long. I think it took around 10 minutes to get two drinks. My mocha wasn't very mocha like and there appeared to be more milk then anything. My other half got a hot chocolate which also tasted like nothing. Similar to Starbucks they have cute names for drink sizes like conservative (the smallest) to liberal (the largest). Also, I found that the other patrons were glaring at me. I wasn't dressed like a yuppie in fact I looked like I had just come from the hills, but still no love from the Capitol Ground patrons. read more

Coffee was okay. The older man at the counter was HIGH AS ANYTHING. Not weed high, but shaking on hard drugs high. He could barely figure out my simple plain iced coffee order. I have been to Capitol Grounds a couple times on my trips to VT. It is the perfect coffee bar for the only state capitol to not have a starbucks.* The bar itself is old and dated. There are some spots where the paint is pealing and there are mix-n-matched chairs, but all-in-all, it has good coffee. I have had their espresso, which is tasty. Their hazelnut lattes are delicious. And their capacinos are standard fare. They have a full menu of sandwiches, but I have yet to try them. The prices seem a little steep. For one of two coffee places in Montpelier, I would definitely suggest a visit. Check them out for the lattes, which if you get a small (only 8 oz.) you will not be disappointed. * I am not sure if this is a fact or an urban legend. read more

There free wi-fi service is very nice... it is unfortunate that the rest of the package is not so good. Many Yelpers rip on Starbucks and I can understand why. Nevertheless one would think that independent coffee shop owners would at least take some cues from what they get right.... like how to arrange a shop, move people in and out and so forth. Don't get me wrong. Capitol Grounds is a comfortable place to sit and surf, but don't make the mistake of ordering an espresso (sour) an ice coffee (just plain weird, like they mix different roasts/blends together) or try to get in and out of their in a hurry (how can it take so long to toast a bagel). My favorite coffee beans made in VT. Senate Blend is particularly good with yummy results in my stovetop espresso maker. On the coffee drink side, the vanilla lattes are excellent. Capitol Grounds also makes great soups, especially the gazpacho and the beef chili. The service is always good and often great. read more

I visited here for the first time EVER yesterday, and I was satisfied overall. My boyfriend and I both got smoothies (his-strawberry&banana, mine-4berry) that were absolutely delicious. Delicious blueberry muffins and sandwiches. They make a good Maple Latte. The cafe is bustling at all hours of the day both during the week and on weekends so it can sometimes be hard to find a spot. I believe the owner is the friendly gentleman bringing out the various goods as they are made. Some days the muffins are decidedly different, which makes me suspect there is a backup muffin maker... The only downside to this establishment is the service. Generally it takes a long time for any prepared food item as well as speciality coffee drinks. I would also like to see shorter gray haired lady behind the counter show some enthusiasm for life. No matter the day or customer she remains a sour, frowning orb of negativity. I was calling because a patron picking up a catering order was double parked on the main road blocking traffic. I like the place overall. The coffee drinks are good, the baked goods aren't bad. The breakfast sandwich was not mind blowing but it was quite decent. I hit it most every day when I'm in town. The staff has always been very nice and pleasant, certainly a very local, friendly crowd. I find the prices to be a little too expensive but not obnoxiously so. The $5 credit card minimum; however, is mind blowingly annoying. I'm coming in to get coffee and wake up. Like most people these days I carry a debit card and no cash. I want to swipe my card, get my coffee and be on my way, not have to figure out something additional that I have to buy to get over $5. This morning when a friend of mine and I went in we ordered drinks and food we needed to wait for. We were over near where the self-serve coffee pots are when an older woman stomped over with what looked like a crate of half and half to put in the small fridge under the coffee counter. I had just mixed my coffee and was headed back to where we were going to wait when I noticed she was bent down still putting the half and half away, slamming each container as she did. Then when she was done, she stood up, slammed the fridge door and whirled around (I was waiting to get by still) and HIT me in the leg with the crate! I was shocked and surprised, and it hurt! She mumbled something and stomped off, what the hell?!! The people behind the main counter were nice when we ordered and the food and coffee is great, but damn, there is no excuse for acting like that. You can also pick up several bakery items to hit the hunger spot. Free wifi is available, just ask the staff for the code.
