We're new to town and we stopped in today for an early lunch and it did not disappoint. We ordered an Avocado Toast with egg, Avocado toast with tomatoes and basil, a maple iced coffee and a hot chai latte. All super delicious in a really fun small cafe atmosphere with great service. My first ever Montpelier coffee shop, and I was not disappointed. I discovered this gem while traveling out of Burlington en route to Boston, and needed a bit of time to relax a bit. This cafe is one of the few in the Montpelier area that seems to be open later during the week (6-7 PM) when some of the other coffee places close earlier. Welcome to Montpelier. Upon entering, you feel as if you are walking into a building with several other businesses. The cafe is on the right side. Definitely an old school design. The seating area has both plush areas, and rigid areas (i.e., the bar seating). For you PC users out there, the outlet plugs are limited here! There is a separate room for wine, etc. Instead of coffee, I chose a strong imported tea instead. The presentation of the tea was different for me- a silver strainer that you dip into your deliciousness is all that you need after several minutes. There are snack options, as well as really good water from the big glass jug at the corner of the bar area in order to cleanse your palate. Customer service here is excellent. I really enjoyed conversing with the two female employees that worked here. Parking is somewhat challenging here (as with most businesses in town), so you'll have to look out for an open space that is metered. The meter goes until 5 PM, I think. I had to park on the street directly behind the building & walked a block or so over to the cafe, yet it wasn't terrible at all. Will certainly return when in Montpelier, VT again! read more

Really great cafe, love the atmosphere. I needed coffee before a 3+ hour drive home and everything was closed. This shop actually didn't open until 11:00am but they opened the doors for me at 10:46am. It was an incredibly nice gesture and I truly appreciate their kindness! It's a small space at first. You might think for a moment you've wandered into someone's foyer. As you take it all in, you realize, no. This isn't a home. This is a little slice of heaven! You have to go early in the day. Their amazing selection of sandwiches, snacks, desserts, smoothies, hot & cold beverages! And of course the wines and cheeses! Oh my! Will run out right before your eyes. They know exactly how much to make everyday. It's always very exotic combinations of sandwiches & wraps. If you are timid you should order something you'd ordinarily avoid. Because they made it delicious. But if you are very timid the bialys and knishes are delicious. It's a bit of luck to find a seat indoors and out. Inside is very intimate and feels somber. It's wonderful for the meditative eater. Yet conversations feel best hushed. But across the street there's a church wall to sit on. They sometimes have live music there. Which is enjoyable at the North Branch's patio next to the river. read more

After awhile the cookie was delivered. After 30 minutes, wife checked on status of wraps and was told they were making them. After 45 minutes, checked again and found wraps waiting inside for us to pick up, not delivered to table. North Branch adds 10% to bill for "service". read more

What a treat to find this place! Stopped by Montpelier at lunchtime, on our way to NH. Many thanks to the other Yelpers who led us to this place..... Wow! Unexpectedly unique and thoroughly delightful. Friendly, helpful staff and cool, leisurely vibe (great place for anything from working remotely, catching up with an old friend, or grabbing a bite on a busy day). I had the Cheddar and chicken Flatbread sandwich, which was perfection: crisp lettuce, perfectly prepared chicken, and a zing of apple cider chutney that all melded together wonderfully, wrapped inside a perfectly soft-yet-crunchy fresh baked bread. My partner had the Masala roll up, which was nothing short of *exquisite*. Indian food baked into a light, airy bread of some sort.... I've never tasted anything like it and I'm sure I could have it every day without ever getting tired of it. We both washed down our lunch with the ginger hibiscus iced tea. We followed the server's recommendation to get it with agave. Oh but wait, I'm not done yet! Had the rugalach for dessert and..... holy wondrousness. Just the exact right amount of melt-in-your-mouth, buttery, goodness wrapped in a perfect pastry dough. Had to hop onto Yelp right quick to post about this place, partly so we can remember this amazing meal when we think back on our trip, and to help others find their way to this perfect little spot overlooking the river. Just the light lunch we needed after a scone-filled morning at Red Hen Baking Co. up the road. We both ordered the veggie quionoa, one with a side of cheese and the other with hummus (which tasted like the white bean variety). Our orders were rounded out with an iced chai tea and lemon, chili powder tea combo (perfect for my cold - I'm going to say it healed me;) . The experience was both recharging and healthful. We loved the natural light that poured into the room and the ideal location on "Main St." in Montpelier. Now, if only we had room for those gluten free cookies and slices of shortbread in the dessert case.... Note: they have wine available by the sample and full pour size is an automated dispense machine. This is a great spot for tea junkies. read more

Beautiful new addition to Montpelier's downtown scene -- what a gem! There's an extensive variety of tea (which you can smell in jars by the front entrance) and tidbits to go with them, like cheese plates and hummus plates with cute, creative Vermonty names. And there's a wine dispenser that allows you to try all sorts of wines in all sizes (you can even sample some of the wines you normally wouldn't try!). I had a 1 oz. sample of 8 different wines and, even though I'm no wino, by the end I felt like I could actually taste the difference and decide which ones I liked best from there. The aesthetics of the space were lovely, and I truly felt at ease sitting in the back room overlooking the river flow by. Lots of great art on the wall and some local crafts for sale in the back corner! But my FAVORITE part, of course, was all of the gluten free treats! Where else in town can you find gluten free cupcakes and cookies?? They're held safely in a glass jar so as to prevent cross contamination. AND, the staff told me they can make any of the cheese/hummus plates gluten free by substituting the bread for rice crackers instead! A celiac's dream! In sum, I found the North Branch to be a super gluten free friendly, relaxing social gathering space, good for any occasion both day and night! This is a very cozy, comfortable, and cute cafe! I first time visited Vermont and stopped here at 7 p.m. Saturday. There was a guitar duo live concert. I really enjoyed with a cup of tea here. I had SoHo tea. Here over 30 kinds of tea are available. The cup is really nice, it double glass, so easily can touch the cup, but the tea is hot. I will definitely come back. read more

Thank you for your response. A few clarifications. First, my prior visits were also during the pandemic and during those times I was never prevented from using the restroom nor ever told it was for customers only. The only difference with those visits was that I was either with my anglo friends or in-laws. Second, I didn't ask to use the restroom as I simply stepped out of the line and headed to the restroom knowing that it wasn't in use when I was suddenly stopped and interrogated with regard to my intent. Yes, the same restroom your friends were allowed to and later used. Third, as the owner of the cafe, apparently on location on the day of the incident, and witnessing it first hand, it would have helped if you had handled the situation and perhaps spoken to me directly. But it would seem that an issue such as this wasn't even worth your time. While I appreciate you taking the time to respond, I'm not sure it really helps since it simply brings up the negative emotions felt during the incident. Perhaps a simple and sincere apology like "We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding our policy may have caused and have updated our policy to apply to all patrons and customers going forward... hope you return to experience..." instead of hiding behind "covid rules" might have been a better approach. Sadly, I will never return to your establishment when in Montpelier since being treated a lesser paying customer is something that I like to avoid. Just a note that I frequent numerous establishments in Vermont and somehow, this is the first that I've ever experienced such biased treatment (even during a pandemic). I'm also an avid tea and wine drinker so you've lost a potential repeat customer due to the unfortunate way your restroom policy was implemented. read more

I've been here a few times as I visit from New York. I love The North Branch. They have a tremendous selection of teas and wines. The lovely women there are always ready to make a suggestion of something I might like to try. The desserts are delicious. Went in before the holidays to pick up some local "sweets" as gifts for visiting relatives. Was greeted in a cold fashion and shrugged it off as maybe they were having a long day even though it wasn't very late. Paid for my selections and felt as though I was the one providing a service versus the woman at the counter. She was quite pretentious and really soured my experience here. Definitely will not be visiting any time soon, and as a reminder, to those who own small businesses/eateries, a "thank you" or "thank you for coming by" goes a really long ways towards repeat customers and a positive word of mouth regarding your establishment. read more

This place is great! My wife and I came to Montpelier for our anniversary. Unfortunately I had to work the first day of our trip. I went online to find a cafe in the area from which to work. I was really excited to find a place that caters to tea drinkers! I have never liked coffee, but picked up an appreciation for tea over the past several years. The North Branch did not disappoint. They have a great selection of tea to choose from. The staff is also very knowledgeable about tea. With so many choices, it was nice to be able to get recommendations from other tea lovers. I noticed that they also had wine, and a cool wine sampling machine. I asked about it, and they turn into more of a wine bar at night. On this night they were having live music. Since it was our anniversary, my wife and I came back that night to enjoy wine samples and listen to music. It was weird spending the whole first day of my trip in one cafe/wine bar but we had a lot of fun. Great place for lunch date/meeting, working from home, reading, or tea sampling during the day. And at night, I could see coming here before or after dinner to have a glass of wine and just enjoy the atmosphere. read more

This is a really charming café with delicious wine and a nice selection of teas. My partner and I ended up here because our car broke down and needed some work done in town but I was pleasantly surprised with the detour! It's a very comfy spot. The best! We were so happy to find this cozy place. The homemade gluten-free wrap was amazing. We loved the selection of teas (the green sencha and black Himalayan we tried were fantastic; so 2 out of 2). Smoothies were excellent and everything is made from fresh ingredients. Golden coconut milk was my favorite; made from fresh turmeric, ginger, cinnamon sticks, etc. to maximize health benefits and yumminess factor. And I almost forgot, we tried and loved these little green matcha-coconut baby cupcake things--they are not too sweet; just perfect for a bit of energy anytime of the day. We live in Virginia, but wish we lived in Vermont so we could come here every weekend! read more

What a quaint little cafe! Decent prices, wide variety of teas, wines, and snacks. Free live music can bring quite a crowd. My husband and I had 2 oz samples of wine, then chose glasses based on our preferences. Was so nice to be able to sample the wine first and avoid being disappointed with a glass (not that this happens often ;) ). One of the servers convinced me to try a sample of a rose wine, which I would NEVER had done if I had to pay for a full glass. The sample portion, however, was perfect, and she was right-- it was much better than I expected! Wish we lived closer, this would be my go-to date night spot. read more

Weak tea. I got it to go, 5 bucks for a little cup, very very slow service, like ten minutes to get tea in hot water. They weren't busy. And the guy who took the order also forgot my cookie and walked away. I walked back to my car, let the tea steep a good 10 minutes...it was very weak so I looked in it. There was hardly any tea in the bag! After it expanded in the water it was still a tiny amount. I wish I could attach the picture. It's just tea, in a tea shop, how did they get it wrong? This place is very cute - nice atmosphere and everything is very tasty. Great selection of wines where it is always fun to tey new things. However the hours during thr week are weird - as is pften typical of Montpelier - so I can never actually make it here when I'm in the mood for it! Wine and tea at eight am? I'm thinking more like 8 pm. I was going to go there again tonight (a tuesday) with friends after work around seven but realized it wasn't open. North Branch Cafe is everything you want in a dining experience: excellent food, attentive and considerate customer service and a pleasurable atmosphere. Mid-afternoon on Monday I went in looking for takeout for a gathering of 10 people. The staff recommended a quinoa-veggie salad, which had beats, carrots and other goodies ($6). They portioned out enough for 10 of us. As it turned out, there were only 6 of us, so everyone in our group was able to have a small second helping. I added to the order two of their small plates ($15 each), the Champlain, which came with two kinds of cheese (chevre and brie), local honey, olive tapenade, crusty bread and dried figs, and Hunger Mountain, which included two dried meats, cheese, castelvetrano olives (divine), crusty bread and more crackers. Did I mention the divine olives? Even though the food was takeout, the staff carefully arranged the plates and covered them with a tight wrapping for an attractive presentation. The portions were generous and their claim for locally sourced foods must be true, because all of the food was very fresh and intensely flavored. Since the restaurant had run out of disposable knives, the staff kindly gave me two of their stainless knives and said I could return them at my convenience. While my order was a takeout, so I didn't dine there, I sat and enjoyed the peaceful ambiance of the restaurant while I waited for them to prepare my food. There are booths, tables, and counters. Magazines and newspapers allow clients to catch up on the latest local news and events. I look forward to another trip to North Branch Cafe.
