I am surprised at the poor ratings this place has gotten. I guess as consumers, when it comes to something other than great food, people are quick to write about their negative experiences but no one writes about the positives one. So, I will take my time and give you a very honest and well-deserved review. Over the past year and a half, husband and I have purchased MANY fixtures from this location - sconces, a large entryway chandelier, hallway chandeliers, track lighting, vanity lighting, pendant lighting, light switches, plugs, the list goes on.... And we keep coming back for more. I would be lying if I said there have not been ANY hiccups - item arrives to our door missing a part, maybe the specs are off - HOWEVER, they have typically been the fault of the manufacturer. Capitol Lighting has been quick to resolve the issues efficiently. We were lucky to have met Debi on our first visit and continue to work with her. Husband and I are very picky and (husband) more involved and well versed in construction than the average consumer, and Debi is VERY knowledgeable (re: transformers, circuits, voltages, wattage, etc), responsive, takes her time helping us find the perfect piece, and makes excellent recommendations. If she doesn't know the answer, she will find out. I also can not say enough good things about Manju (who is not on the sales floor but works in billing/customer service), she is the sweetest and has been so quick to resolve and follow up on any hiccups or questions we may have. On the one occasion we had a larger issue, the manager Elijah voluntarily stepped in and offered a very amicable and hassle free resolution. (Again, this issue was the fault of the manufacturing company - who inaccurately described their product as dimmable even on their own website). Yes it is true, they do get quite busy, especially on the weekends and you may feel a little overlooked. But its because (from our experience with Debi) they will take their time helping you find the perfect piece and answering all your questions. They have a huge selection and yes, while there are many items that they offer but don't carry in store - that is to be expected when you realize just how many options are out there and its just not feasible to have them all on the floor (ceiling/wall ha) - they can typically obtain it from another location or have something in the same line so that you get an idea. On top of all this, I always shop for the best prices and Capitol Lighting's can not be beat and can not say enough good things about Debi and Manju. read more

Don't buy from this place please. I bought a $2,750 ceiling light and after 13 months the light is defected, 2 of the metal wire was broke and fall, half is still hanging on the ceiling. Try to contact them for help with order parts and look like they don't want to help because of little thing like this. And they told me to call direct to the factory to order and i did, but the factory said they don't sale for individual customers, i have to order thru the company that bought from and i got back to them and asked for their help but no one answered. Ordered from their sister company, 1-800-Lighting. Unfortunate mistake! First, the website said limited stock, but they shipped me floor samples from one of their retail stores! No advise that I was buying floor samples, of course, no discount for such. Next, they packed the items poorly, and one of the 2 fixtures which has glass parts, had 1 glass part that arrived chipped! Next, I called and was informed they would ship the part on the next business day, and it is now one week later, and they still have not shipped the part! They are compounding the misrepresentation of the condition of the items, with extremely poor customer service. Already 2 phone calls today requesting a customer service manager return my call, and still waiting for a call back! My warnings to all considering purchasing from their internet/phone side of the business! read more

OK so these guys I guess did not make the terrible products they sell so I can't say they are responsible for the trash that came out of someone's factory. However they do sell said products so I can label these guys quite easily as deceptive and with zero quality control. If you say a light is oil rubbed bronze I don't expect to see tin painted black then a bronze paint pen used for accents on the edges. Quality exists - I bought a beautiful oil rubbed bronze door handle which sitting side by side with this terrible thing looks laughable. If you advertise the light as outdoor use then I should not be able to see a gaping gap accessing the internals from the FRONT! If I actually installed the product sold from your store I would get someone killed if it even looked like raining. If you are going to sell something for $170, make sure it does not arrive looking like $25. Bent, scratched and unusable - by the way it was beautifully packaged so it was not damaged in transit so bonus points for you (lets call that the 1 star above). It is too late for me, my friends and family - I/we/they will never buy your products again. Wake up, stop accepting junk from your suppliers, do some actual quality control checks on the junk you sell and you might actually stop getting terrible reviews. I am not returning this - the cost of return postage and the inane discussion I will need to go through with "customer service" will be not worth it after the first 10 minutes. Instead I plan on mounting it like a trophy to show people just how terrible, 1800lighting can be, as I doubt, unless you saw it, just how many defects can be in a single light. read more

She seemed genuinely concerned about my problem and helped me out tremendously! I then had the pleasure of speaking with and meeting Ben Fressola. He went above and beyond to meet me at my property to exchange my light fixture. He arrived with a very pleasant gentleman named Dave. They were both extremely friendly and courteous and showed very professional behavior. I have to tell you that I am a small business owner and I would hire any one of these fine people in a second based on their social skills to interact so nicely with customers. Wish I could give zero stars! This store has caused me nothing but headaches- I was shipped an incomplete fixture, then after wasting a ton of my time tracking down the store manager I was shipped replacement parts which again were not complete. Now the store manager is either in a meeting, having car trouble, in the bathroom etc every time I call. Save yourself the trouble and shop somewhere else where you can actually receive customer service ! read more

I had a wonderful experience today at Capitol Lighting. I knew that I wanted to order a Kovacs LED swing lamps. Gayle Van Dunk greeted me immediately, listened to me, and directed me to the fixtures. When the lamps weren't available there, she immediately contacted the manufacturer to confirm they had stock and to have them shipped as a rush. Also there was a manufacturers sale which was not told to me from any other store. I received the same wonderful service paying for my purchase as well, confirming the rush order.. This will be sent directly to my home, so unless their is a delivery problem, I am very satisfied with the service I have received. read more

She's totally inconsiderate, rude, rushed, uninterested, and all around horrible; should never be in the retail field or near a sales job. I'm in the retail business and would never act like that to a customer. We ended up leaving and buying from the lighting store on Rt4 in paramus. I have looked at several of the other reviews and can only say that my experience was great. We are doing a remodel of our upstairs and have found that selecting appropriate lighting is the most difficult task. Initially we looked at the stores in the lighting district in Manhattan. The sales people, even though we informed them of the room dimension, pretty much tried to sell us light fixtures that were, as we subsequently learned, very inappropriately sized. This was especially true at Lighting by New York. We then saw several fixtures online that we thought might work, and through a series of phone calls, discovered that some of these fixtures were on display at Capitol Lighting. The store, by comparison with those in Manhattan, is huge, and there were so many lights on display. We spoke with Ariela, who helped us tremendously. First, she educated us about the size considerations for a fixture and suggested that several of the fixtures we liked would not work well with our space. One of the fixtures we were interested in and subsequently purchased, she managed to have the store display as we were coming to have a first hand look. Every time we called, she returned our call very promptly. She was very patient with us, and when we visited the store, she stayed beyond her work time to help us. We purchased a living room light and a wall sconce.The wall sconce was defective (not the fault of Capitol Lighting). Ariela helped us to arrange a return and the purchase price was refunded the moment the sconce was received at the store. The light we purchased was large, and to insure that it would arrive in good condition, the service people decided it was better to put it on their truck and bring it to Manhattan than to send it Fedex. It was wrapped up very nicely, and the delivery guys arrived right on time and were nice enough to bring the fixture into the apartment. All in all, a 5 star experience--Thanks, Ariela! read more

My husband and I went to Capitol Lighting this weekend to buy lighting fixtures for the exterior of our home. Ariela was very helpful without being pushy. We had a pretty good idea of what style we were looking for and she did a great job of showing us what they had on display and on their website. We were there for a long time looking at different lights and brochures. When we finally made our decisions, she wrote everything up and we paid. Shortly after we left the store, she called us because she remembered that I wanted 36 inch units for the front entryway and she realized that she mistakenly quoted and entered the smaller units on our order. She fixed the error quickly and gave us the pricing for the smaller unit, which was the price she quoted and that we already paid. She could've told us that she realized her mistake and needed to charge us more, but she owned it. I was so impressed with the customer service, the quick response, and the professionalism of Ariela. I am so surprised at the reviews. I had such a great experience with capital lighting and especially with their customer service department. We bought sconces for over our kitchen island and they came from California 3 days earlier then expected. The other day we bought a Murray feiss bathroom light and we paid and then I realized I had a 10% off all Murray feiss fixtures. I went to customer service and she was so nice and said " I don't need to see your e mail I took the 10 percent off" a few days later I went to install the light and one of the glass fixtures was broke. I took it back and again everybody was so nice and ordered me a new one to be shipped to my house. The girls in customer service are the best!!!! read more

paradise when it comes to the illuminate world or ones desire to illuminate their humble or not so humble casa. every style of lighting from the excellent collection of contemporary design, sparkling dramatic and sometimes funky/cutting edge chandeliers, Mediterranean (the polite way to say Italianate glitz) and more. the selection is fantastic and you will get what you want! sales help not at all pushy and it's not one of those over-lit boiling hot lighting galleries. you can see what they have, turn it on and get an accurate picture of the glow. we went for a knockoff george kovacks lamp- floor model- was $150....reduced to a WOW- $59!!! i'm sure that they are other bargains like that. worth the venture !! read more

About five years ago I purchased over $20.000 in lighting products for our new home, well while cleaning one of the chandeliers I dropped a piece of crystal, when I called the store the representative was very rude and was not concerned or care at all about helping me buying a replacement part. I was very disappointed and visited the store, of course I recognized the voice of the person I spoke over the phone and steered myself to another representative. I was fortunate to meet Ms. Marnie Safran, what a difference, she went out of her way to help me and located the broken part,which we ordered. She took ownership of my problem and help me, knowing that she was not getting any sales commission . In the future, when we need lighting products I will only deal with Ms. Safran. I purchased all my outdoor lighting and some of my interior chandeliers from them but I will never buy anything from them again. I chose to overlook the "salesperson" nasty attitude at that time but it has come to the point where I can no longer overlook their lack of customer service. I purchased a mirror on their website in the beginning of December and it arrived broken. The same day, I requested a replacement after dropping off the item myself at the local store. At the very end of December I got a call from their so called customer service supervisor with a horrid attitude telling me that the PO for the order could not be found and they gave me the option of cancelling the order or placing it all over again. The whole experience was ridiculous and I felt like I was jerked around and lied to by all the people I spoke to (more than 5 different people at their so-called customer service center). Do not waste your time with this company and their staff. They will surely anger and disappoint. I am blown away by how little companies value their customers. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STORE. read more

Went in on Friday. Spent an hour in the store, was never even greeted. My interior designer called and made an appointment for Saturday. After spending over an hour in the store again and being totally ignored, we asked a woman Gayle for help. She was beyond rude. She told us she had a client and her facial expressions and body language was enough to indicate she was not interested in assisting us or finding us assistance. I told her I had a 7,800 sqft house I needed lighting for, which she seemed to care less about. She said "I have a client and if you want to be mad be mad at whomever your appointment was it-were short handed today...not my problem." And she walked away. She then proceeded to stare at me for the next hour and talk poorly to her clients about me, loud enough so I could hear her. Finally when I said to my designer I wanted to leave, she got up and came flying across the showroom and verbally attacked me. She told me "there's plenty of other lighting stores in the area, why don't you go to one of them!" When I told her I would be speaking with the store manager on Monday she said "she how well that does for you! This is my store, I'm the employee!" Customer service was so appalled by her behavior they came over and asked for my name and number to give to the manager. Needless to say we left and took her advise and went to 2 other lighting stores in the area....to the tune of almost $30,000. Hope Capitol and Gayle are happy. Great employee you have here! I will tell everyone not to shop here and my designer has already told both retailers of our experience and sworn never to shop your store again! read more
