A seafood place with a breaded tenderloin
Richard P.

If you've ever driven down Pendleton Pike and done a double-take when you passed by what looks like another Caplinger's location, it is actually a Caplinger's location. Officially known as "Caplinger's Fresh Catch Seafood Kitchen," this spot semi-resembles its sister locations - the original spot on Shadeland Avenue and the Whitestown location. In case it's not obvious from the name, Caplinger's specializes in seafood - dinners, sandwiches, etc. Unlike the sister locations, Caplinger's is not a sit-down joint. They offer carry-out or delivery. I placed my order this evening via GrubHub, a rather dastardly way of having dinner given the upping of the price but a nice option for someone recovering from surgery and wanting a decent meal. Also unlike the other locations, this location obviously doesn't have any retail options. Essentially, as has been pointed out, it's rather like a food truck but in this case it's in a set location. You pull into the parking lot and order at the window. You wait for your food. They do have a loudspeaker, so you can wait in your car if desired. As they prepare the food fresh, the wait can be 20 minutes or so. For some odd reason, mostly because I have a friend who blogs about tenderloin, I opted to go away from their seafood options and order their hand-breaded tenderloin. It comes with the usual toppings, though they were delivered on the side. They also have a variety of side options - I chose an order of waffle fries. The entire meal came in at just over $12 for the base meal, but by the time you add in delivery and tip you definitely go higher. While I'm rating the meal a 4-star, I'll add a slight disclaimer that I doubt I would actually order it again. The Caplinger's specialty is seafood and this meal wasn't really good enough to make me deviate again. It was fun to try, but just a touch disappointing. The sandwich is huge - it's on the thinner side, but not too thin. It definitely has a meaty taste to it with some strong seasoning. I would almost say a bit too strong. I'd almost gone for their hush puppies, which I'd tried at the Shadeland location, but opted for the fries. Again, I'd probably go for hash browns next time. The waffle fries weren't much more than warm by the time they arrived, though the serving size was plentiful. If I could, I'd probably go 3.5. However, I'm going up primarily because service is always solid at Caplinger's and this is a side item outside their specialty. It's a solid value for the price. It is noted that they have sandwiches, dinners, sides, desserts, and drinks. I did not see drinks on the GrubHub menu, though I doubt that I'd have ordered a drink anyway. The only two sandwiches that are not fish/seafood related - chicken and tenderloin. Among the dinners, the only things not fish/seafood are chicken. They do also have frog legs and alligator tail. Since I just had my leg amputated, I didn't have the heart to eat frog legs. I'm kind of being serious. Anyway, I'm going with a 4-star rating while acknowledging that upon a future visit I'll likely stick to their seafood menu specialties. If you're in the area and looking for something to take home, it's a terrific option but definitely not a destination spot. I should note that there's a wheelchair ramp that goes up to the order window - it's a touch steep, but its presence is appreciated.

Fish and Shrimp combo with Buffalo Fries and Candied Yams

I came by this week to pick up dinner. It's typically busy here with a line and I was able to come at a rare non-busy time (score!). The gentleman at the counter was patient with me as I asked questions about the menu (I had only been to their other location once years ago). He explained that the fish they are known for (basa) was brought to the area by the Caplinger's and very delicious. I decided to try this with the fish & shrimp combo. I got the fish fried and the shrimp grilled (they give you a variety of seasonings to choose from). I ordered buffalo fries and candied yams as my sides. My wait wasn't very long and it looks like everything is made to order so I didn't mind waiting (only about 5 min). As I waited, a lot of people poured it. It's obvious that this location is booming and I'm happy for them! Support local businesses!! When I got home with my order, I quickly realized I had no hush puppies, sad day. I dug in to eat and was not overly impressed with the small shrimp. They were underwhelming. The fish though- that was the best darn fish I had ever had in my entire life. I would give that fish 100 stars if I could! The buffalo fries were okay, a little softer than I prefer fries, and the yams were pretty good. I tried to call about the hush puppies but the line was busy (likely with orders). I messaged them on yelp and the owner got back to me within a couple of minutes. He was very kind and apologetic. I was not upset, mistakes happen, I just wanted my hush puppies on my next order, which he guaranteed to help make happen. Overall, this is a great place that deserves continued support. If you aren't into seafood, or have someone in your party who isn't, they had other options, such as chicken and pork sandwiches. Otherwise, you better try that basa - you'll be SO glad you did!

I had heard many times about this restaurant and have to admit I was skeptical about ordering from what looked like a shack on the side of the road. I am glad I decided to try it. I ordered the catfish dinner and it was really good. Came with plenty of food and sides. I will definitely be ordering there again and want to try the main location now. If you are on that side of town, I highly recommend you give Caplinger's a try! Keep up the great work and the good food.

So I was trying to decide what to have for dinner on the way home when I suddenly remembered that I'd be going by Caplinger's! I see it often, but for some reason, I could never remember it was there! Well, I finally did. This is more like a food truck setup. You order at the window, and then you wait probably 20 minutes or so for your food, depending on how many orders are in front of you. You can actually wait in your car with the window down if you want. They announce your name over a loudspeaker. I realized they didn't ask my name, but just used the one on the card I paid with. With cash, I imagine they ask! I got the catfish dinner which was a serious amount of food! Two large filets, 2 sides (slaw & mac 'n cheese), and 2 hush puppies. The mac 'n cheese was amazing and well seasoned! The catfish was perfectly crispy and great by itself but also tasty with the tartar sauce or hot sauce. You can eat there if you want as there are picnic tables, but it's not the most scenic/restful place to do so since it's next to Pendleton Pike and currently next to an active construction site (for Belle Tire). I'm a happy camper, and I'm sure this will solidify my memory that although this location is unassuming, it's still amazing seafood! No more forgetfully driving by this one!

This one is outdoors, a get it and go place, but the same deliciousness as the one on N. Shadeland. Maybe they will add picnic tables in the future? That would be a great idea in my opinion. Also, Greenwood needs one!!

Ocean Perch Dinner

The perch is amazing. Seasoned, crispy, and the white meat is so soft! Waffle fries better than chick fil a! Just hurry up and place a order!!!

Is that worth $13?

The fish is decent. But def not worth the price. I've tried this place 4x. Each time they've been hella rude and always make it so hard to order. I will say, someone besides the cashier always try to help me. Today is the day they lost me though. I paid $13 for barely a filet of catfish. I feel like I'm getting robbed everytime. This is not worth the money. And the sides are very mid. And I mean veryyyyy mid. Not only that they tricked me and had me thinking they'd fix my order. I waited an extra 10 mins for literally no reason at all. Highly do not recommend.

a sandwich in a plastic container

Disappointed is an understatement... yesterday my boyfriend and I were absolutely at a loss for words. This was our first time trying this place and we were so excited because Indy rips and raves over this place, but I am most certainly confused as to why. Small shrimp on a bun with no toppings, Kraft, nearly neon yellow mac and cheese, and a solid, dense crab ball that cost $11 before taxes for a single dough ball with crab. Come on... this cannot be real and this place cannot be serious. People, please save your money on this one, or maybe try different menu items, but with caution. Capilinger's Pendleton Pike location, do better.

Green beans and candies yams I had to make myself stop eating so I could take a picture!

I recently tried Slap's Fish Market and sampled a little bit of everything--lobster roll, burrito,…read morecheesecake, and their lobster deviled eggs--and overall it was a really memorable experience. The service was very helpful deciding what to order. The setting was fun down town indanopolis feel. The lobster roll was definitely the standout. It was packed with fresh, flavorful lobster and had a nice balance of buttery richness without feeling too heavy. You can tell the seafood is high quality, which makes a huge difference. The lobster deviled eggs were super unique and honestly one of my favorite bites. Creamy, slightly tangy, and topped with lobster--it's not something you see everywhere, and they executed it really well. My husband tried the shrimp burrito, which was great for a seafood spot. It was hearty, well-seasoned, and filled generously. It didn't feel like an afterthought on the menu. To finish, the cheesecake was a great choice it was from the cheesecake factory is what the offered for my birthday smooth, rich, and just the right level of sweetness with a strawberry topping to end the meal without being overwhelming. Overall, Slap's Fish Market delivers on both creativity and quality. It's a great spot if you want fresh seafood with a few fun, unexpected twists. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.

Not gonna lie, my work group really likes coming here when we have lunch outings. My only problem?…read moreI very much dislike seafood to any capacity. Yet, I still eat here just fine. I feel like most seafood places will have vegetarian options by way of removing the fish from pasta dishes or salad, but it's also nice to know that you can get chicken as a substitute on most of these kinds of dishes, too. Granted, it's just like chicken tenders, but still good nonetheless. I really like their firecracker pasta, which is moderately spicy in my opinion. There's no particular fishy smell here, which is always a good sign that the seafood they serve here is freshly prepared. Our food always comes out quickly for lunch and we've been a group as large as 8 or 9. I do believe that ordering is mostly done online in their mass Ave location, though. I don't really seek out a place like Slapfish on my own (no offense at all, just not a seafood girlie!!), but I would assume that it's a rather popular establishment as they recently opened a fifth location in the greater Indy area. If I did like fish and such more, I'd probably be here on a more regular rotation.
