In my two-star review of Cappy's, I was particularly critical of the food, which I considered uninspired, underseasoned, outdated, and overpriced. Paradoxically, its less acclaimed, less expensive sister restaurant next door, Cappyccino's, succeeds where Cappy's stumbles, with a concise menu of colorful, creative, full-flavored dishes. You won't find Prime-graded steaks, U10 diver scallops, or trendy cooking techniques at Cappyccino's, only salads, soups, burgers, and pizzas prepared with finesse, a feat for an open kitchen the size of a broom closet. I've never been a soup aficionado, but consider me a fan of the rich, wholesome cups and bowls at Cappyccino's. On a recent visit, my waitress tempted me with a Korean pork soup du jour with house-made kimchi and slow-braised pork shoulder. The thick, perfectly seasoned broth tasted strongly of marrow, the shoulder meat rivaled the moksal I've sampled at Korean restaurants, and the kimchi provided a crisp, sour, pungent kick that complemented but didn't overpower the broth. My only regret is that I ordered a cup instead of a bowl. Burgers are a hit as well, my favorite featuring an antelope patty sourced from Broken Arrow Ranch, a reputable supplier based in Ingram, Texas. Antelope is extremely lean and can go from moist to dry in a matter of seconds, so I was pleased that the kitchen honored my request for a medium-rare patty. Any gaminess present in the South Texas antelope, or Nilgai, was cut by a dollop of smokey, savory tomato bacon jam. The slightly sweet buns are soft but sturdy enough to retain the juices from the meat and toppings. The burger is fine on its own, so I suggest discarding the accompanying vegetation, namely the boring shredded iceberg, overpowering raw purple onion, and pale, mealy tomato slices. All burgers come with a choice of potato salad, house-cut potato chips, or a generously portioned house salad with a creamy citrus dressing, tortilla strips, and cotija cheese. The tiny brick oven in the heart of the kitchen bakes a delicious rectangular pizza/flatbread available in several iterations, including a traditional Margherita and a "3 Little Pigs" pie with bacon, boar sausage, and speck. The poblano shrimp pizza won me over with ten medium-sized Gulf shrimp, Jack cheese, cilantro, red onion, and thin slices of roasted poblanos. The dough tasted proofed, as evidenced the airy, tender internal crust that held its own against the weight of the toppings. Fish tacos are a cliched vestige of 90's hipster haute cuisine, but Cappyccino's treats them with reverence. A lesser restaurant might include frozen tilapia, but Cappy Lawton and company use fresh drum sourced from the Gulf. The thick, moist corn tortillas are undoubtedly homemade with a robust masa flavor. Given the constraints of the kitchen, the tortillas likely come from La Fonda on Main, the third restaurant in the Cappy's family. The fish is lightly fried and topped with a crispy slaw, a bright tomatillo-avocado salsa, and a squirt of chipotle aioli for creaminess. My only complaint is that two tacos is not enough; I could devour four easily. Desserts include a passable sticky toffee pudding, a comforting chocolate sheet cake with fudge icing, and a selection of homemade crepes. Try as I might, I cannot order anything other than the comforting black forest crepe; the promise of bing cherries and creamy milk chocolate folded into warm crepes is simply too alluring. At $6, it's also a great value. Service can be hit or miss depending on the time of day. Arrive for an early dinner and expect attentive waitstaff, but drop by during the lunch or dinner rush and expect long stretches between courses and overwhelmed, overworked servers. This is undoubtedly a management issue, as the servers perform admirably under the conditions. Adjust your expectations accordingly and your patience will be duly rewarded by a tasty meal at a reasonable price. read more

Service is wonderful. Food came very fast, although that could've been because they weren't too busy. Don't get a salad. Waste of $14. There's not much to them-- the chicken is those little cubes and the portion is a bit small. Cute atmosphere, definitely leans more heavily on the sandwich side. There's plenty of seating. I've heard parking might get hard on a busier day, but we were able to park in the back lot no problem. There are a few cute shops around, so if you have time to knock around, I'd recommend exploring. read more

Have to say the parking and the wait slightly dampered my experience. Small joint with couple seating is nice, service was great food...not so much. I had the turkey breast with cranberry dressing and chips. Chips were cold and stale, the Turkey breast may have come from the Central Market next door, cranberry didnt taste like it should, very sweet. My partner took on the grilled ham and cheese with the tomato soup. She enjoyed it, but commented that it wasn't anything special that couldn't have come from WDs down the street and parking would have been better. Overall, just a bar turned into a lunch spot that you can easily pass by if there is no parking. read more

My husband and I love to dine at Cappycino's. They have wonderful drink and food options to satisfy most any customer. For dinner, they offer soups, flatbread pizzas, and to-die-for burgers. I think their best option is the Broken Arrow Antelope Burger with tomato-bacon jam. Burgers and sandwiches you can have with potato chips, potato salad, or house salad which comes with ranch dressing. Personally, I prefer their vinaigrette. If you want a hearty meal, steer clear of the fish tacos. They're good but served with the tiniest piece (yes, singular) of drum. Another good option is the Southwest Cobb salad but be warned it's dressed with ranch as well and it's not noted on menu. The dessert menu is noteworthy with several crepe options. My personal favorite is the Cinnamon Sugar. Creative, delicious, and some boozy coffee options are the perfect complement. read more

This chili bowl is a perfect balance of healthy with a dash of treat yo self with the ample amount of jack cheese they top the bowl with. The white chili comes in two sizes but I opted for the smaller one. BIG MISTAKE. I should've gotten the larger size. The seasoning was great and it's definitely some solid comfort food. Cappyccino's menu is American comfort food situated in a relaxed dining environment. This is the sister restaurant of Cappy's without the fine dining nuance. They have a great cocktail menu here and their signature drinks are fun! They also have cheese bread that's made with their focaccia bread. This is a great little place to grab a bite to eat for dinner or brunch. They have a quaint little area and a bar for seating as well. Their portion sizes are pretty decent so depending on how hungry you are, you can share some dishes. They have a pretty good selection of bar options as well. I like the ham and cheese with basil. Good spot for a casual lunch. I went for lunch with my coworkers. Parking could be limited during the busy hours. Luckily we got parking relatively quickly for a Friday lunch. There were open tables so we were self seated immediately. I had the soup and sandwich lunch combo. I chose the soup of the day (cream of sweet potato and potatoe with pork) and a chicken salad sandwich. The combos come with chips. Portions are decent and the sandwiches are good. The soup was a bit salty but flavorful. My coworker said that the pozole soup is addictive there. A lot of older people come here for the healthier choices of fruit and salad dishes. It's covered in sautéed mushrooms and you can get it with their house made chips - definitely choose those over the potato salad. This is a great spot for lunch or happy hour after work. They offer a smaller menu, but the offerings are pretty diverse. They have a wonderful turkey sandwich and their house made potato chips and homemade ranch dressing are to die for! They also have a wood burning oven and delicious sour dough pizzas. I have also had their Elk burger several times and it does not disappoint. They offer a full bar and made mean after dinner drinks. We love stopping in after a movie on a dare night for a quick drink without all the hassle of a traditional bar. There is ample seating and the ambiance it casual yet intimate. I enjoyed it. That said, the last four or five times have been very poor. Service has been on the downturn for quite some time now. Even beyond that is the food quality. The menu has not changed in a very long time. There is one special usually and then the same repeats the rest of the way. The quality of those repeats just keeps going down. It's almost like they are not trying anymore. It used to be a more casual place to visit than cappys, which is amazing. It used to be a great neighborhood spot that used to be a consistent good time. Absolutely terrific neighborhood bar with pub grub. Small friendly very helpful staff of charming folk. Bar drinks are first rate. This is not a place to go for the house exotic "lullu badullu" cocktail invented by the bartender last week. They stick to the standards - but the bar is solidly stocked, and execution is excellent. A plus that is especially helpful for a bar selling "standard repetoire" mixed drinks ... a full printed multi-page menu of everything they can mix and everything the bar stocks. This is totally useful. Why doesn't everyplace do this???????? The food menu is small but high quality. A good selection of desserts for late night (plus the bar is open late to justify going there for desserts - a big positive in a town where off the Riverwalk they often roll up the sidewalks at 9 pm. It is tough to find snacks and dessert in San Antonio late at night.) and the desserts are interesting and solid. (they do a lot of crepes). there is a lively array of appetizers (good to have drinks with) - and a decent selection of burgers and sandwiches. i am a particular fan of their white chili (and they "chicken-based chili concoctions a number of ways). they also try to have something rotating and odd on the menu to keep interest. (recently it was a brie and peach sandwich). AND they keep the TV at one end of the restaurant ... so you can have a classy place to dine and converse in the remaining 85% of the establishment. Overall - this is a superior version of a Chili's style place with a smaller menu but better execution. It certainly has WAY more soul than Chili's. Thumbs up. read more

It's ironic to note that I ate here recently with my running partner and the meal went as follows: 1 Large order White Bean Nachos 1 Shrimp and Spinach Quesadilla 1 Poblano Shrimp Sandwich 1 Real Ale Lost Gold IPA 1 Bud Light Yes, two ladies who have run marathons together ordered that spread. And dominated most of it. Every bite was delicious and totally worth the hours of working out that will follow burning the calories. The waiter was friendly and attentive but didn't hover over and get in the way of our catching up. He showed us some highlights of the menu and told us about the different beers on tap. We placed that order above and got our food hot, cheesy and totally tasty. We sat and talked and munched and enjoyed the setting. Great music plays in the background. The space manages to feel both intimate and also like you have a fun party there. And the service is top-notch.
