It has been over 2 years since our last visit here at CAPS and we have family visiting so this place is a great dinner spot to choose. Of course, there are no reservations. Valet only parking, 10-minute wait on the parking lot which is alright. But we had to wait another 20 minutes at the new waiting area to order drinks. The new pier is a good idea so that guests can chill while waiting. Be prepared to wait as it really does fill up on the weekends. Got the Vilano Shrimp for the appetizer as it is sautéed in spicy Thai garlic sauce paired along with olives and Asiago cheese and spinach. It was tasty, but the shrimp was a bit dry. Crusted Catch was delicious-just right with the texture of the fish with mashed potatoes and a variety of greens blended very well. Nice ambience, good food, great service - what's not to like?? We went to Caps on the Water on a slightly chilly Saturday for dinner. We opted to sit inside, they have heaters outside by the water which would have made for a beautiful scene as we ate but it was just too cold. The inside is cozy and tables well spaced out. We shared a beet salad, which was so simple yet excellently prepared with the goat cheese and vinaigrette really helping the dish shine. We also shared a tuna tartare which was also well seasoned and the chips were good and crispy! For entrees, the blackened catch (grouper) with curry, pickled veggies, and brown rice was so delicious - the seasoning and cook on the fish was amazing, and the curry brought some luscious flavor to the dish. The fish and chips were also great, all well seasoned, although the fish could have been a little crispier. The fries and hush puppies though were great as-is, and the tartar sauce brought the whole thing together. Our server was super friendly and answered all our questions with a smile, just the cherry on top! A nice place for a nice sit down meal. read more

This is a local favorite and a great place to enjoy lunch. There is only valet parking which is complimentary. There is indoor and outdoor seating although the indoors is all opened to the outside so it is really covered seating. The FL weather is obviously hot so if you aren't under a fan it can be a humid experience. The servers are all great and the food is delicious. On this trip we had the shrimp skewers which are delicious! It is blackened shrimp with andouille sausage. We also shared the fish and chips which was plenty for two people. I had one of the best Aperol Spritz. Our party of 6 was seated right by the water, which was nice. We enjoyed the ambiance of the sunset while dining. Our server was great and provided good information on the dishes we had questions about. I ordered the Jambalaya, and it was TOP NOTCH. The flavors were so good, and there was a plentiful amount of shrimp and sausage with every bite. A show stopper was the 2 cornbread muffins served with the dish. I could eat those every day! Save your money and your time. The view isn't worth the meal. We had one of the worst seafood experiences we've had in a long time at Cap's on the Water. Our fish and chips came out soggy, wet, and literally swimming in grease. The fried items were cold, the hush puppies were burnt, and the plate looked like it had been sitting for a while before it reached the table. Nothing was seasoned and there wasn't even salt on the table. Salmon was dry. The Gumbo was swimming in a bland tomatoe sauce. Inside the restaurant felt more like a diner than the coastal dining experience we expected. The chairs were uncomfortable and the quality of the food just didn't match the price point at all. There was Heinz ketchup on the table, but after tasting it we all agreed it definitely didn't taste like Heinz. It felt like it had been refilled with something else, which added to the overall impression of cheapness and corner-cutting. To their credit, our waitress handled the situation really well and was kind and responsive when we raised concerns. She was the bright spot of the experience. The view outside is beautiful, but it comes at the cost of food quality. And to top it off, they add an extra 3% credit card processing fee because they're struggling with business challenges. Definitely a place to go to watch the sunset, have great drinks, and eat some of the best food on the water! We started with a rum runner and gin and tonic. Soo good and strong! Ordered the truffle fries and pesto Caesar to start with, they both were delicious! Then we decide to get some more apps and went with the pear ravioli and the beef tips. Sooo good! Unfortunately this used to be a great local spot, but the ego's from the valet parking to the hostess stand have become quite the turn off. In particular the man guarding the front gate like it's a concert venue, cursing people out for walking past him, is quite the example for how they treat customers here. With numerous new local water front spots, I'd highly suggest checking out any of the other spots. As this restaurant has certainly hit its peak and is going downhill. There is no reason to deal with attitude and rudeness from staff, especially as a customer. I'd give Zero stars if possible. read more

We had a perfect evening. We had a drink at the bar and waited for a waterfront table. Our server Marissa was exceptional! If I could describe Our ideal version of a server- it is her-the timing, spacing of drinks and food was outstanding. I got the steak frites special with a side of carrots. The flavor was good but the cut was not. It was difficult to cut (medium temp) and a bit chewy. Not what I'd expect from a $50 steak. Hubby got the sea bass special which was great. We shared a side of hush puppies which were almost as good as a dessert. We tried the lava cake and key lime desserts. Both were just okay. Some of the best catch of the day I've ever had paired with delightful cocktails, friendly, welcoming service and a stunning, romantic setting on the water under twinkle lights. Each oyster was large enough for 2 crackers. They were insane! I chose the vanilla crusted grouper with mashed, and dried spinach for my entree. Hubs chose the Jumbalaya...yes, I was shocked by his choice as well haha My fish was absolutely perfect. It was paired with a vanilla rum sauce and it gave it the perfect amount of smooth factor with a hint of sweetness. The piece of fish was also HUGE. A very nice serving size and my hubs was happy to help me finish it. His jumbalaya was fantastic. The flavor was spot on from what we favored in NOLA. ZERO STARS! Tried to dine there tonight as a new local resident. Wait list is turned off on website. Arrived to find out valet parking only with 15 or so cars in line to valet. Our daughters got out to go see the sunset from the dock and get a drink while we waited to valet. They were told to get back in the car. Because they questioned the guy in the lot as to what he said and why they couldn't get drink until we parked, he told us to leave. So, we backed our car out, turned around and went to The Reef. We will NEVER try to eat there EVER and will make sure everyone knows it's run like an amusement park. BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES. Plenty of other good restaurants to go to. EDIT: No one cursed at restaurant staff, and by "staff" meaning you. From the MANY similar reviews specifically talking about the manager running the parking lot not allowing guests to get out and use the restroom and not allowing service animals (illegal, by the way), I'm shocked ownership allows this to happen and hasn't been sued. It's clear your parking lot "manager" gets his jollies by this behavior. That's okay, we'll never be back and will tell everyone who asks for a local recommendation. They gave us a nice table with a view in their indoor pavilion. We shared the shrimp skewers appetizer, which was really tasty. Our server was so pleasant. My husband ordered the fish & chips. We went here for dinner on a Sunday and it was quite busy but definitely worth the wait! It was about a 20 minute wait before we got to the front of valet and about an hour wait for a table for two by the water. We expected it to be busy since it was dinner time on a weekend but we didn't mind the long wait since we weren't in a rush. While waiting for your table, you can order drinks and some appetizers to enjoy on the dock. We ordered raw oysters as an appetizer, sesame seared tuna and the vanilla grouper as entrees, and creme brulee for dessert. Everything tasted amazing especially the creme brulee, do not skip out on the creme brulee!! The only reason I knocked one star off was cause of the semi slow service. After we got our food, our server checked on us twice but then it took a while to order dessert and get the check. We got there around 5:30 pm and didn't leave until 9 pm, so definitely don't recommend stopping by if you're in a rush...but if you have time, the food is definitely worth the wait! read more

So friggin good! You know this place has fresh seafood when it's right on the water like this and everything is delicious. The only thing that maybe wasn't as great was the jambalaya that my husband had, but maybe it's because we live in Texas and right next to the next jambalaya state around - so if it's not jambalaya from Louisiana, it's not great jambalaya! I had the seared grouper and it was heavenly. The view is breathtaking. We went right around sunset and I wish I had taken a picture of when the sun actually started to set, but my hubby and I were too busy gabbing away with my aunt & uncle that brought us here. Tha ambiance is very nice. It's fancy but is also tropical. I did not get to view the inside part much, but from what I saw it was also quite spacious. I've lived in St Aug and Jax for a decade and somehow never made it here. Reviews are mixed from locals, some saying the place is "all about the view". In my experience last night, that is very much not the case. We were a party of two, seated outside on the river, and we decided to order a few things and share. We started with the pesto salad which I will now be craving. Not a single piece of lettuce inedible, all fresh and delicious. Perfect little tomatoes and shaved Parmesan with crystals. Next came the garlic shrimp app. This was tasty, albeit small for the price, and the sauce was broken upon arrival at our table. It tasted very good but the texture was oily. Still, the shrimp were great and the toast points a fun crunchy element. Next we got something off the Specials menu that was stuffed with crab. I'm forgetting what the original fish was even supposed to be because they ran out and we were informed by our very attentive server, Claire, that it was being swapped to grouper and that it was very similar. We were thrilled with that dish and practically licking the lobster sauce off of the plate. The asparagus was well-cooked and the micro greens were a delight. We ended with one more app, the scallops. What a unique combo of flavors and it works, blue cheese and all! For us, the scallops were slightly underdone, but not worth sending back and risking overcooking. We also had a cocktail with mezcal and orgeat that really blew us away. And of course the view - we went at night and enjoyed the lights of landing planes in the distance and the cool green glow under the piers, with schools of fish surfacing in a frenzy now and then. Really stellar ambiance with old trees that they chose to build around instead of chopping down, incorporating them into the natural beauty of the establishment. Spanish moss, resurrection ferns, unique lighting, all really a feast for the eyes. There's a different environment in every part of the restaurant, which is much larger than I ever realized. We left content with happy bellies. Additionally, yes, there's complimentary valet required for all cars, so know that in advance. The parking lot would be a madhouse if they didn't have this well-oiled system. Valet staff were quick and courteous and I never felt nervous for my vehicle. Bring some cash for tip. As for table wait time, it's a large and bustling restaurant, so this is totally understandable! We went at 7pm during Nights of Lights. I arrived before my friend and put in our name, but they only seat when the entire party arrives. Once he did arrive, we had a table within two minutes. If the wait is longer when you go, pack your patience and then enjoy the experience that follows. read more
