Table abandoned with some eaten, but some crabs left behind
    Maria M.

Horrible! The service was lacking due to being slow. And the service unfortunately affected the quality of the food. The food was cold and appeared old when it arrived. Please refer to the pic of the food once it was placed on the table, without a smile. There was no check in to see if I needed anything or how I was "enjoying" my food. I watched as others who were seated before me, wait for their orders. I also watched as other tables, non too thrilled about their food, wait for their checks. And sat sadly amongst them with my cold, and questionable old small crabs. Upon eating the first leg of my small crab, it was cold and dry as if it had been reheated. And so were the other 1 of my 6 crabs. The loose crab legs weren't dried out though. I asked for another "sweet" tea but before I could ask her for more sugar packets she disappeared. I went to retrieve some from a table that had left and saw that they had left 4 uneaten crabs on their table. There was another unsatisfied table who tracked down the server for their check, and when she asked if they wanted a bag for their crabs, they responded by letting her know that they didn't like them enough to take them. Another table had the Ultimate Feast with Crab legs. When I asked them about their experience, i was told that they were cold and appeared old when she received them. So, that was 4 tables, including myself, that were unsatiafied with the quality of food. I tracked down my waitress and paid the check before speaking with the manager, Walter. I explained to him my experience and the experience of other diners, of which 2 tables remained, and he blamed the kitchen staff. Stating that he would speak with them. He also offered that thwre were only 2 servers on duty, and they were unexpectedly "slammed" while having to service both the inside and outside diners. As I explained to him, that as a diner, I would have preferred to know that once seated or some time during my experience. Unfortunately, Captain Billy's is a no for me. And sadly, when I posted about my experience on my facebook and Instagram pages, others were shocked and some were not as they referred me to one of the competitors in the area.

    Shrimp basket

The location is peaceful, and located on the river. The shrimp basket has nice deep fried jumbo shrimp, which was nice and hot; the french fries were not fresh and tasted like they were under the heat lamp or leftovers fries. This put a damp on my meal.

This Maryland girl (now in Virginia) makes several trips a year to Captain Billy's for crabs. Always good, always! Service is great and friendly. Get there early and grab a seat on the water.

Sunday morning drive from Richmond to Maryland. Got there and the views of the Potomac are stunning. We sat outside to enjoy the views. The service was awesome. The food was very good, no complaints. Would come back with more seafood lovers. A must try for sure.

It's hard to separate the food from the view. But really, the view really stole the show. Hanging out on a Friday afternoon outside was lovely. I ordered a crabcake sandwich and corn fritters (with honey). The fritters reminded me of something you get from a carnival, but the crabcake was good. I wish more options were in season when I visited, but what they had available was still plenty good. But more than anything - sit outside!

The crab cakes had no filler. We could only eat one apiece. The service was outstanding.

Great location with outdoor seating right on the water! Food and service were excellent. Our waitress went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience and everything we needed. The seafood dip and hushpuppies are a must!@

Captain Billy's is a beautiful scenic place to enjoy seafood with both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a little chilly for us, so we decided inside at a table with a waterfront view. We were greeted when we came in, and our party of 5 was immediately seated. Stephanie was our waitress today, and she is amazing. Lively, friendly, helpful with suggestions. She made sure we had our drinks taken care of and our orders in a timely manner. Our table tried quite a bit of food! Appetizers: Captain Billy's Seafood dip - we loved it, and we definitely saw the crab and shrimp throughout. Bread was perfectly toasted and buttered. Jumbo steamed shrimp - they were great. Containers of seasoning were at the table for use along with cocktail sauce and lemons. Mains: Crab cakes dinner - crab meat no filler with fries and veggie of the day (mixed vegetables) Jumbo fried shrimp - perfectly crunchy served with tartar cocktail and fruit-cantaloupe and orange with coleslaw and potato salad. Coleslaw was the perfect amount of sweetness. Potato salad is simple and delicious. Rockfish - our table tried the grilled and fried. The grilled had more seasoning and was more flavorful. Fried was ok, but go with the grilled! Couples feast- pefect amount of crab legs and shrimp for two or a hungry person who wants leftovers! Parking was plentiful with some parking in front of the restaurant and plenty across the small street. Gratuity is included for orders $200+ or parties of 6 or more. Nice spot of you're looking to impress. It's a nice scenic drive if you're coming from the DC metro area. Enjoy!

I have no clue where these 4 and 5 star reviews are comming from. We spent over $200 for a table of 5 people , for the blandest non-seasoned reheated and refried food. The crab did not taste fresh. Even hot sauce, salt , pepper, tarter sauce , cocktail sauce, mayo, ketchup and old bay didn't help. If you have to drive far, the view is definitely not worth it, unless you just want to order bottled beer and watch the sun set. For a positive, I did not have issues with service. Our waiter Seth was kind, professional and curtious.

This is a real, no nonsense Maryland Crabhouse. We ordered a dozen crab and they threw in extra for good measure. Being April and right at the beginning of the season, the crab was fresh and flavorful. I enjoyed the old traditional salty vibes. The servers were great and left us alone to do what we do best.. crack some crab shells! Great mixed drinks too. They even had frozen drinks. We will return in the summer, sip frozen drinks and eat more crab.

We ordered a dozen crabs, a pound of jumbo shrimp, a bowl of cream of crab soup, an order of hush puppies and an order of fried pickles. The soup had plenty of lumps of crab meat and a nice flavor, and the portion was ample. The crabs were described as jumbo but were closer to large. At $115 for the crabs, a dozen was enough. (Side note: when the market price is that high you really should disclose it on a specials sheet or chalkboard or something. The first mention of it was on the final bill.) The crabs were steamed well and did not taste muddy at all. The shrimp likewise was perfectly cooked. The pickles and puppies were delicious. Total bill before tip came to $200. On the high side versus expectations but not alarming. Service was worse than spotty. At times it was clear that the server had tables in multiple areas of the restaurant and needed roller skates to keep up. And there were times that she was sitting talking to other employees or with her regulars. Several things we had to ask for multiple times (melted butter for crab, drink refills, a few crackers) some of which we finally gave up on ever getting and went to the bar to request. Things like silverware had to be requested. Getting the bill took longer than necessary. All in all, service was 2 to 3 stars. Setting: Worn chairs and tables. Many televisions, all set to Maryland Lottery channels for fake horse races and keno that ran nonstop. Large lottery machine near the bar that did a steady business. This was distracting and not conducive to pleasant dining. Overall the food made the trip worth it. Will go back but not for the atmosphere or the service.

I had a nice seafood platter with haddock, oysters, scallops, shrimp and a crab cake. The hush puppies are the best I've had since Chesapeake Seafood House. Pretty good potato salad and a large salad are side options. The coconut cake was good, moist, flavorful and large. The drinks were not a strength maybe beer is more of a safe bet. It's on the water eith indoor and outdoor seating in a very casual environment.

It is a seafood restaurant and we expect to pay more for good, fresh seafood. We cannot do that often and it had been a year since we had been there. Our experience yesterday was so disappointing, I doubt we will be back. First, little things: there was no beer on tap, the cold cases were not labeled correctly with dessert names holding wine and other unknown items. The sign outside with the name of the restaurant is long past time to be refreshed. It was barely readable. The number of tables had been reduced and there were pieces of tables outside and in the dining room. It appeared that there was only one person in the kitchen and the TV blared some "reality" show instead of music playing. It still was cute and clean but it felt like something that was nearly ready for the final lap. Second, the food: the pictures shown here are "before" pictures. The crab cake sandwich, for example, was the cheapest crab meat you can buy (yes, bordering on "goo") breaded and fried. It had more binder than crab. Unlike the pictures, you could not see pieces of crab and you could not taste crab. Let me recap in order. We ordered steamed spicy shrimp. They came out and looked great. Something was wrong. I've never needed so much effort to peel a shrimp. Husband used a fork to split the shell off of the shrimp. I ended up chewing a lot of shrimp shells because I could not get them peeled off. We also ordered the Captain's Platter to share. It is huge and that's the best thing I can say about it. They were out of scallops so we substituted fried oysters and picked catfish and our two sides. The catfish, oysters and hush puppies were fine. The crab cake was, as mentioned above, terrible. Not 'disappointing.' Not 'not good.' Not 'room for improvement': terrible. Embarrassingly terrible. Our meal came out without the sides. Our waitress was busy with the one other seated table in the place having a long conversation about tattoos and tattoo places in Fredericksburg and was heading back to the kitchen when we flagged her down. By the time our sides were out, we had finished the main course. The mac and cheese and the twice baked potatoes had just come out of the oven so the were blazing hot. Let me be clear: they cooked our main and sent it out and then started firing the sides. Actually they probably cooked some else's food and then fired our sides. The mac & cheese was fine, the twice baked potato skin was so charred, it was inedible and the inside of the potato was, well... mush. It looked like they had put it in a blender resulting in a tasteless paste consistency. And then the too-hot-to-eat food was presented to us after we had finished the main. Hubs ordered iced tea, I ordered water to drink. They were nearly the same color. To describe his tea as "weak" is a kindness. Something nice: The person who waited on us was very nice and did her best. Here's the best part: we dropped $60 for two people sharing app and entree. For $60, we could have had a nice meal served in proper order that had texture and taste. Instead we got unseasoned, tasteless gruel (with the exception of the catfish) that was way below "not good." Randolph's On The River will now just be a fond memory and not a special place to go. That makes me very sad.

Nothing really stood out, but nothing was terrible either. The restaurant has the typical crab house setup with brown paper covering the tables, and everything was spaced out nicely. We decided to sit at the bar, which is fairly small. I'd estimate there are only about eight bar stools. For drinks, I had two Moscow Mules, and my friend ordered two Lemon Drops. Both were good, especially for happy hour, and the prices were reasonable. The only food we ordered was the fried calamari, which came served in a small boat tray. The bartender also handed us plain white paper plates.... the same disposable plates you can buy at walmart. I'm definitely not someone who expects fine dining at a crab spot, but it felt a little lazy. Most seafood restaurants at least use branded paper trays or sturdier disposable plates that fit the experience. I completely understand that restaurants are dealing with rising costs, but this small detail took away from the overall presentation. Since we only ordered an appetizer, I can't fairly comment on the rest of the menu. However, I noticed several tables enjoying steamed crabs, while most of the people sitting at the bar had fried seafood platters with shrimp, fries, and hush puppies. Everyone seemed happy with their meals, so that's always a good sign. I did make a trip to the restroom, and while it was clean enough, the stall door was difficult to close and lock properly. I actually had to hold the door shut while using the restroom, which is something I hope they fix soon. We ended up staying for about two hours, and the atmosphere was relaxed and easygoing. Another plus is the large parking lot, which made parking convenient. Overall, Crab Boat was just okay. The happy hour prices were good, the drinks did the job, and the service was fine. I don't see myself going out of my way to return, but if I were in the area and wanted to grab a reasonably priced drink or it was one of the only available options, I wouldn't mind stopping in again.
