If you're looking for quick taste of seafood on the fly, Captain D's is a good choice! Now, I'm no stranger to Captain D's. I previously had them while visiting Georgia a few years ago. I can't remember how good it was but I do remember being satisfied, so I was pretty excited to hear that a location was opening in the Bronx. After tending to an errand in the area, I decided to stop in for lunch. The restaurant is located right within a small shopping plaza off Gun Hill Road, which hosts other fast casual restaurants and local businesses. Parking was a bit tough and I ended up double parking close to the sidewalk. It also doesn't help that there is a school located across the street, so be mindful of timing. Upon walking in, I was immediately greeted and asked for my order. The restaurant is brand new, fresh, and modern. In terms of sizing, it's small. There were not chair to eat-in, so I'd say it mostly takeout.
The menu is different from what I remember, but in a good way. They feature a host of seafood options including shrimp, cod, and even salmon! in addition, there are options for fried and grilled seafood. The value meals deals caught my eye. I went with the fish and shrimp deal which included 1 piece of fried cod, 3 pieces of shrimp, 2 hush puppies, and a side (I chose fries). I also purchased a drink. My meal was ready within a few minutes. Unfortunately they were missing my fries but I caught it before taking off. Nonetheless, my food was hot and crispy. In terms of taste, the fish and shrimp were salty. If it weren't for the tartar sauce somewhat calming it down, I would've been very disappointed. Visually and texturally, it reminded me of frozen seafood you purchase at a grocery store, except the food is prepared with better equipment than just your microwave or air fryer. The fries and hushpuppies were good. The hushpuppies are exactly how I remember them years ago. They have a nice, slightly sweet taste to them with a cornmeal-crisp texture.
In terms of service, the staff were kind and welcoming. They apologized for the mix up with my fries and gave me a little extra to make up for it. I do believe my meal came at a great value, so I would say it was worth the price but the quality could use some work. Overall 3-stars for good service and an adequate meal. I'm curious to return and try some other menu items but I wouldn't be running back immediately. read more
