    Cheesesteak

Food is fresh and cheesesteak was good. Friendly staff, worth checking out if you like the dive feel and supporting local.

Classic menu, if you can read it

Several reviews mention the lack of cleanliness. Now I'm not saying there hasn't been a dip in cleanliness standards since the captain helmed this ship, but they've been cooking greasy stuff here for decades and its never seen a remodel, so yes, the walls are a bit yellow, and yes, there are dirty random rubber containers, so if you want john j Jeffries and be able to eat off the floor, drive 3 minutes north. The clientele hasn't aged or changed a bit. The dudes next to us were hoping rancid and drop kick open up for guns n roses. The food is average dive stuff. The cheese steak is not real flavorful and the buns get soggy but hey, this is still one of the best steaks in lancaster. And if you've been around for 48 years, you must be doing something right.

a bicycle parked in front of the counter

I had a great time and great food at Gus's (my first time there). First - I rode my bike there and arrived early. Nick, without hesitation, let me bring my (fairly expensive) bike inside the store for safekeeping which was much appreciated. Second - I got there around 9 am before the grill opened, but that didn't stop him from firing it early and getting me a deliciously prepared cheese steak with sauce, onions and mushrooms. I gobbled that down like no tomorrow. Nick is very customer oriented....we talked about values and how everyone should treat others as we would want to be treated. He (and Joey - the real Commander-in-Chief lol) are great guys - coupled with great food - no wonder they have been in business so long. I can't wait to bring my friends and go back for another sandwich!

1st time here and it's their 50th anniversary, The food tastes great. Definitely a warm family place to eat. To 50 MORE years!

Lancaster staple. Love coming here for a cheesesteak and fries when I'm back visiting home.

My favorite place to get a cheese steak since I was little. The people are always friendly and the food is always hot & fresh.

This place is overrated... Nothing special about the cheesesteak at all. The cheese wasn't even melted a little. Barely any steak on it.

I looked on Yelp and quickly pivoted here and I'm glad I did! The woman behind the counter was very kind and personable to everyone who walked in, there were free cookies that they were testing out that customers could take, and the seating was limited but clean. The big windows give nice views out to the parking lot and the rolling hills beyond. I ordered a "Rancher" which was one of the hot sandwiches. A bit like a cheesesteak but with ranch dressing and bacon. The sandwich was ready in no time at all and tasted great! Could definitely see myself coming back next time I'm in the area.

Definitely a top choice if you come here. The sandwich tasted great. The main problem I have is that I am not a fan of their rolls. The rolls are very doughy and seemed like there was too much roll for the sandwich. The service was quick and fast, the lady at the front register was very kind. Great service is always a plus in my mind for a restaurant. The location was clean, easy parking, and setup nice on the inside with plenty of seating. The price per sandwich is a little bit expensive.

We ordered the New Yorker sandwich this time (had the Don last time). It was good but not great. The spicy mustard was unevenly applied so was missing on my half and was badly needed. The Don sandwich last week had meat spread throughout and the fries in the sandwich were crunchy and not limp like today's sandwich. We also had naked BBQ wings that were good, but again, not as good as we had last week. The wings were bigger, meatier and better sauced last time. Apparently didn't take pics last weekend for comparison, but it was noticeably better then so would suspect that cooking is uneven. Last week was a 5, today was just a 3, so I averaged.

I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw. Very different from any coleslaw I've ever had before. Not saying it wasn't good. Just wasn't my thing. The sandwich was good. My son ordered a huge sandwich (can't remember what it was called) and it has coleslaw and fries inside. I snatched a fry and they were so good! Three people, three sandwiches and under $40. Good deal! Especially when two of those sandwiches could have served other people. They were huge.

Stopped in to Mad Chef unexpectedly while traveling through Lancaster…read more My wife and I were hungry and tired from traveling through Pennsylvania. Thankfully Mad Chef was open later than most places so we got in before the kitchen closed. I enjoyed the low lighting with the brewery equipment shining in the background. Having the Phillies game on the tv's only added to our experience. Our drinks and food were excellent. I always like to enjoy a local craft beer, having it paired on site with fabulous eats is even better. I ordered Mr Dynamite Brown, their American brown ale which was fabulous. We ordered a small Pommes Frites (French fries) that were cooked in Canola oil. While light in color, these fries were cooked to perfection. Crispy outside, fluffy inside, salted just right. My wife ordered the pretzel and said it was her type, buttery, salty, and doughy. I ordered the Korean Pork Nachos, by far the best nachos I've ever had the pleasure to devour. I can't begin to describe how well the roasted corn poblano medley brought this plate together. Every bite had an explosion of flavor with the Korean glaze and Gochujang aioli. This dish blows Guy Fieri's trash can Brisket nachos out of the water. If ever in Lancaster don't pass up on the Mad Chef Craft Brewing gem.

This was my 2nd time coming to Mad Chef!…read more The first time I came here was about 2 years ago (before doing yelp reviews). I was not very impressed. This time around I cannot complain! Their specials are all revolving around the Masters which was unique! We tried the Pimento, Fried Green Tomato, Chicken Sandwich (The Pimento Birdie). This was a delicious sandwich that just screams Georgia! We also tried the Madfather Chicken Sandwich! Pesto, Vodka Sauce, Mozzarella, this thing was outstanding! The fries are always a highlight here! We got the bucket (had a bigger group) and it came with 3 sauces. 1 tiny little knock on the fry bucket....the entire bucket was not filled with fries. The bottom of the fry bucket had about an inch or 2 of crinkled up paper..... All of the food was outstanding. The beer was good. Tons of space and seating. Very easy ordering process. Go up to the counter, tell them your table number, and your food arrives shortly! Prices are high here! Expect a larger number on your check if consuming both food and alcohol!
