I'm so happy to have this place in Easthampton! We are so lucky to have a bunch of new and wonderful businesses like this, in a relatively small town. This is a fresh take on the New England fried fish place. What makes it fresh is their use of modern flavors and ingredients. It's all done very well, except the fries are kind of soggy and greasy. I personally would love it if they would add some non-fried fish to the menu. However they deserve high praise for what they do, and I will continue to eat here regularly. Food was good and plentiful but service was very rude. I wanted to like it but my friends and I felt like we were bothering them.

3 visits so far this summer with my lady. I have tried a few things, fish tacos were amazing. Scallop roll was good, but I have never had scallops with bread so I didn't love it, just ate the scallops out of it. Not their fault at all, just not my dish i guess. Quality road side grub! This guys nail it with a variety of great options. Of the few times I've been I've had the lobster roll (lots o fresh meat, light on the mayo, nice toasted roll) the fish and chips (fresh fish, light batter, crispy, not at all greasy) and their fries and onion straws also crisp. Everything is well seasoned and they don't over cook their seafood.. cooked to temp just right and still very moist. Price worth the value. they take CC too! read more

My wife and I have been very happy with the food and service at CJ's; however today something happened that made me feel disappointed with our experience there. I ordered a clam roll for my wife and a (so I thought at least) BBQ chicken sandwich for myself. Most likely the cashier did not hear the order clearly but I didnt think anything of it and paid. When the order came out there was no chicken sandwich. I asked if there was some mistake, but they said that was all that was ordered and apparently it was too late to get another sandwich made. n the staff person's defense, it was a very busy night so he may not have heard me correctly, but on the other hand, isn't the staff supposed to be trained to repeat the order back to the customer to make sure it is right? Perhaps I just need to ask them to do so in the future...... read more

Guy walks up and makes sure the window is locked, ignores me completely and walks off. Very rude and will never be back and tell everyone else not to. I'm kicking myself in the rear for not eating here sooner! I remember when it opened years ago I said to myself it wouldn't last. There are no good seafood joints in MA....let alone in Western MA! Man was I WRONG! Me and the wife have recently started going out again to eat out. The kids are all older now and we'll basically go out on a "date" to eat. I drive by all the time and they would always have customers so I figured they must be okay. I asked my wife if she'd like to try the place out and she said "sure, I heard they were good!" So we rode by and I saw there were many people there and kept driving because I didn't feel like waiting in a line. Twenty seconds later I turned right back around because I really wanted seafood and my stomach told me to deal with the wait. GUESS WHAT! That line moved right along and by the time I parked and got to the window there wasn't any waiting. My very first visit and I went right for the lobster roll with a huge side of fries ($20) and my wife wanted the fish tacos ($6.50 for 2). I could not be more happier! That lobster roll was HUGE! I'm not talking lots of little pieces of lobster....I'm talking lots of big chunks of lobster that were stuffed into the roll. I probably should of brought a couple of extra rolls with me because I could of made FOUR lobster rolls with that amount of meat! The fish tacos were also huge and when my wife asked me to taste it I wanted to eat the whole thing and my own! My stomach wouldn't be able to handle it though. The lobster roll came with a huge side of thin shoestring fries that was more than generous. All of the prices of the menu were good. All seating is at picnic tables with canopies. Kid friendly place because you can let the walk around as long as you watch them. Again...the food was delicious and if you've never tried them you need to! I mean, the place is called Roadside shack so I don't know why I was expecting better seafood fare. The fish tacos were alright, definitely not something I'd have to go back for. My wife got the scallops (as a second option since they don't have clam strips, only whole belly). As a side note they also don't have cocktail sauce, only tartar. First, the scallops came out of the fryer and apparently right into their cardboard serving dish, as there was a literal soup of fryer oil in the bottom of her container. Gross. Then, I could hear her crunching on sand across the table. Not the occasional grain that gets lost in the scallop, but as if she took a pinch of sand and just ate it. Every single scallop. By the time she got to the third one, I took them back to the counter. The guy simply said they're scallops they're meant to be sandy. Seriously? Capt Jacks isn't fine dining, but they have a limited menu based on seafood, they should know better. I've never had that much sand in scallops. He then proceeded to ask me what I wanted to do about it (terrible customer service) and begrudgingly reimbursed me. I mean a 10 dollar plate of scallops probably would've just got dumped in the trash, but this was $20. No thanks. I'll drive to Petes in Greenfield any day. read more

Yep, this is the local place for take-out. I highly recommend their clam chowda, full of seasonings, onions and red potatoes. Fried foods are done in a nice, light coating. During the few months in the winter they are not open, I get withdrawal symptoms. read more

I enjoy the food here. It should be known that this is an outside eating establishment and therefore if its cold prepare to eat in the car or take it home. The only negative I have about the place is the fries. They are soggy and burnt. Either the oil needs to be replaced or maybe they need to cook longer. I went there for the first time today and it was OK. The clam strips tasted extremely fresh but were a little soggy and the coleslaw was bland. My fiance got a chicken sandwich and while the quantity of onion straws on it was great, the chicken itself tasted as if it had been microwaved (not saying that it was in fact microwaved that's just what it tasted like) The thing that turned me off the most though was their order taker who was not customer orientated and just seemed very grumpy and mean. Went there on several occasions. Always get the fried clams. They are always great. I just wonder why they serve those skinny small fries. They get cold and soggy way to fast. Just OK. Whoever processes their lobster doesn't do a good job. I think it comes out of a factory processing plants because it includes unconventional parts of the meat like the legs-- and the flavor is so watered down. We went here twice and won't go back again. read more

My girlfriend and I moved to Western MA 2 years ago from the South Shore (Marshfield and Plymouth). We were excited to see a little fried seafood spot pop up out here, but must admit were very skeptical of how good this place could really be. Skepticism confirmed! If you aren't from near the ocean, and have fond memories of summers spent down the Cape/Northshore spending your hard earned money on tourist-trap fried seafood, this is the place to go to relive those days. However, if you have ever been to an off the beaten path "real seafood" establishment this place is going to leave you disappointed. I never will though, because the owner's catering company bailed on us 3 weeks before our wedding last year (after he agreed to do it months before), after not returning my phone calls for a couple of weeks, and then not apologizing or offering an explanation for any of it. I stumbled upon this place driving around with a friend this afternoon looking to grab lunch, and wow, I was pleasantly surprised by this shack, no pun intended. I ordered the scallop platter, which came with about a dozen decent size sea scallops, which tasted very fresh and had a nice light batter on them instead of the typical heavy batter seen on fried fish. The platter also came with a gigantic helping of fries which I couldn't even finish. My buddy ordered the fish tacos, and I wish I had done the same because they looked amazing. Loved Captain Jacks...seemed like every time I went by lately they were closed so surprised that they were open tonight. Ordered two hotdogs and a fish and chip dinner. Got home...hot dogs were burnt both of them - black you can not get any more burnt then this - so whoever was cooking was not paying attention...and they still served these burnt hotdogs that should have been thrown away... extremely disappointed! Husband had the fish and chips and said the fish was dry....surprised at this since we both love the fish and chips here....either a new cook or employees were not paying attention when cooking...never had this happen in the past....still cannot believe that they served burnt (black) food that was not eatable...will think twice before going back. read more

I guess I should have know better...having grown up on the shore I know what good fried seafood is and Captain Jack's hasn't got it. The Fish 'n Chips were a disappointment all around. Fish was several thin over cooked pieces and the onion rings were more like strings. Don't get me wrong,I love thin onion rings, but these were so thin they tasted like strands of batter. No onion flavor at all. And they were greasy! I don't think the oil temp was high enough or maybe they don't drain the baskets enough. Let me start by saying, I love the food here, always yummy, the fish tacos are my favorite in the surrounding 3 towns! And the fried scallops are what I get cravings for all the time, and I was craving them yesterday evening and so looking forward to picking some up on our way out of town. So,I called to place my order, the girl answering asked if I could hold, I said sure, and she laid the phone down , I could hear her taking lots of orders, it sounded very busy, not surprising on a pretty Friday evening. I waited patiently for 7 minutes ( I figured I would be waiting that long in line anyway) and I hear a man say " is someone still on the phone?", so she picks it up and I'm ready to order, but the man tells her to tell me it's too busy to take my order, that I should just come there to order and that they are open til 8 tonight---- I tell the girl, " but I have already been waiting on the phone for 7 minutes" can't I just order, this is a takeout restaurant , etc. The guy keeps telling her to tell me no, just come in, that I will have to wait in line anyway, the food will be cold (?), bla, blah,blah- and they WOULD NOT take my order- so of course I am now pissed with this crappy customer service , and I don't get any scallops! Sad story, not a way to run a business, I got the feeling that they did not care if I came or not as they were busy enough without me- not the kind of feeling you want your customers to have . We passed by several days and the place always seemed like it might be a favorite of the folks. My sister-in-law and I shared a fish and chips - - yes there were that many pieces of fish. My wife had a kraut dog and after eating about three inches of kraut she finally found the hot dog. We will definitely eat here again when visiting MA. read more

The fish may have been fresh but the oil it was cooked in wasn't. The grease from my scallops had started to pool in the bottom of the cardboard basket by the time it got to the table. And our fries were a really dark brown, they looked burnt but didn't really taste burnt just greasy. read more
