Excellent Burgers, onions rings to die for, fish n chips are excellent but the fish tacos are the killer dish here. AMAZING!

Fun spot but the food is average. I wish they had a hot lobster roll with drawn butter instead of just the cold one with Mayo.

What a great little find. I drive by a few weeks back but had already had lunch so when I knew I'd be in the area again I went hungry. Ordered the fish tacos which were incredible. The fish itself was flavorful, fresh and delicious; the cold slaw they pile on top was perfect and really made the tacos a great lunch. Saw other people enjoying the chicken sandwiches, lobster rolls and burgers, all are now on my list of things to try on future visits. The guys working there were great too.. They happily gave their suggestions and feedback so I could decide what to try first. I will be back and I will bring friends who enjoy great food. read more

This review is long overdue .. I've been to busy to type away .. you know the drill. This is a divey/casual roadside place with outdoor seating only. Therefor now that the weather has changed plan on munching in your vehicle. We went to Captain Jack's about 8 weeks ago because of all the good reviews. We went out of our way to go there too. It was better than most really a 3.5 star experience. The Great ! The Portobello Sandwich, hands down one of the best ever! Perfectly cooked with a good portion of mushroom to the rest of the ingredients and a great twist of adding Brie cheese instead of the usual makes this a kick butt sandwich. I will go out of my way to swing by for this again! And if you like mushrooms take my word for it and do the same! The OK ... Scallop's - they were good not great. C. Jack's uses a very light cornmeal coating and we like our's with a heavier batter. The scallops were also on the small size and the portion was small vs the price. The onion rings .. they were kinda like shoe-string rings and to me a great onion ring is a think sliced one with a great bear batter coating. Obviously this is a personal preference = the Ok rating. The not good: Fish sandwich was monumentally disappointing. We could tell the fish (cod or haddock) had been previously frozen because it was very chewy. Normally I would have taken it back but because the place is so small I decided to let it go, we only ate half of the sandwich and gave the rest literally to the birds! read more

They also have awesome thin onion rings - huge portion. Not great reheated so just get them to share and eat them in a single sitting.

It's not everyday that poor customer service trumps good food. When placing an order, we were told the cups for wine were .50, by the way "BYOB is encouraged" but you pay for your own cup?. When we got the order, there was another .50 cup on our tray with our food which we returned. While eating what was great food, we went to ask for one extra tartar sauce which we were told would cost .25. We said "how about the fact i brought you back the cup" and the kid responded with his hands in the air and a bit of a tude "I don't make the rules" You know a little customer service could go along way and in this case i think there could have been an exception to the rule " i don't make the rules", not only was it embarrasing being told that in front of the other patrons waiting it was the second time he said that. We all know you can go to cosco and buy a boat load of cups for dirt cheap along with a huge container of mayo and relish. I've been to alot of fish places in this area and never have had to pay extra for tartar sauce especiallly being a fish place! really? Its just the principal of the whole thing. When a friend suggested Captain Jack's for dinner, I was dubious. I don't usually do takeout food like burgers and fries because I generally associate it with low quality, overly greasy food as such was the regular fare at takeout places in my last hometown. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised with the quality and value of Captain Jack's. My friend suggested calling ahead for the order, which was wise given the temperature and the fact that there is no indoor seating. There are two takeout windows much like what you'd see at many fish fry or ice cream places only open in the summer- but Captain Jack's is open year round. A sign by the window proclaims that patrons are encouraged to BYOB beer and wine, and there's ample outdoor seating for warmer weather- picnic benches and an area where, in the summer, badminton tournaments take place among groups of people looking to eat some good grub and get some activity or just watch can partake of a fun evening. For less than $27, we got 2 cheeseburgers with all the fixings- onion, lettuce, tomato, and ketchup- a hamburger, two fish tacos, a large order of french fries, and an order of onion straws. I was impressed with the extreme friendliness of the man working the counter, who wore a wide smile on his face and was extremely prompt in grabbing our order, despite the fact we'd only called about 10 minutes ago. The food matched the service. The burgers were tender, made with "all natural" beef, and were well cooked to a medium-well; they were juicy and tender patties although the fact they weren't thick burgers, and were amply filling for the size. The french fries (cut thinner than how most restaurants would prepare them) and onion straws were hand cut and good, despite the fact that like most fried sides, they lost much of their crunch and heat during the trip back home before we ate them. I would imagine that the quality of the french fries and onion straws would be far improved if they were eaten within minutes of coming out the fryer, instead of over 15 minutes later. It should be noted that the large fries was enormous- divided among us with the main dishes, one order was able to feed all 3 adults who were splitting the order that night. My fiance, who had never had fish tacos before, proclaimed them to be delicious, and seemed to very much be a fan. I don't doubt he will have them again when we return. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who is seeking a good value, sinfully delicious takeout meal. I very much look forward to returning, particularly once the weather is nicer and the food can be enjoyed immediately after cooking. This is the type of place that adults and children alike, even the pickiest, will have no problems finding a good meal. read more

Great stuff! Lobster was overfilled with goodness! I really enjoyed the lobster rolled but the scallop was a bit salty. It was good and the weren't greedy with it at all. They gave more than i ever expected but it was just a bit salty on the scallops. The fries were okay, but i do recommend you eating it was duck sauce. Them two together was just marvelous. I had the fish tacos - not bad, but WAY TOO MUCH cole slaw underneath them; could have used less slaw and more fish. I think they need a more efficient ordering and pick-up system - seemed a little haphazard to me. Stopped in between rain showers on Sunday. I asked two people in line for their thoughts on the best plate to order. The scallops were recommended so I ordered the Scallop Plate with fries and coleslaw. I asked for it "To Go" as the weather was iffy. I opened the $19 scallops to find about a dozen scallops over a soggy bed of fries and two small covered containers of coleslaw. The scallops were hot and tasted pretty good, but not Top 10. The fries were dark and appeared to have been double fried? They were warm and salted properly, but greasy. I would have preferred to wait for fresh fries had they asked. I will return during future visits to try other dishes and always offer to wait for fresh fries. Coleslaw could use a little more mayo and some celery seeds to make is five stars. read more

Ate at Captain Jack's with my wife September 9th. I had been there maybe 3 times since they opened years ago, and early on, I had mixed reactions because one time i remember it being very good, and other time (way long ago) i thought the fries were a little too soggy/dark colored for my liking.. However, I decided I really wanted to go there last Friday so we went. Got the Fish and Chips and the wife got the Fish Tacos. She loved the tacos and i'll admit they looked awesome. Grill-marked tortillas, super fresh cilantro sprigs on top, etc. My fish was excellent and I was extremely surprised to see how much I was given. I swear there were 6 huge pieces in there (I feel like it would have been the equivalent of $20 alone in white fish filets at the supermarket). Box felt like it weighed a ton! Fries were clearly hand cut and on the thinner side and nicely crisp. What I really enjoyed about the fish was that they use a very very thin dredge on them. It lets the quality of the fish shine. Once in awhile I get a craving for the rich double battered fish and chips, but the way Captain Jack's does it is vastly superior. As someone who needs to watch my salt intake, I found my entree to be slightly lacking in the salt department (that's my inner unhealthy-person coming out), but there are salt and pepper laid out beside the malt vinegar and various hot sauces so I don't see it as a detraction mark whatsoever- in fact, it's probably a good thing. I'll definitely be going back. Still shocked at how fresh the fish was and it was a good value for the $. read more

Customer's Beware!! Today I ordered a hotdog and asked for the bun to be toasted crispy. I also asked for the sauerkraut to be on the bottom of the bun. Once my order was ready, the bun was cold and only barely toasted plus the kraut was not in the bottom of the bun. When I said to them I didn't order the bun this way nor the kraut. All they kept saying is "sorry this is how we make it. That there isn't anything we can do about it." It would have taken a measly two minutes to re-toast the bun and replace the kraut. But they obviously did not want to do that. At that point I gave the food back and got a refund. I gave this place one star but would have given them 0 stars if I could. The cook was very unprofessional by the way he acted. Also this place does not accommodate their paying customers at all. Go to Hungry Hound instead. read more

We have visited before, and the great food brought us back, however, the poor service we received this last time will keep us away. People working here, who serve the public from this outdoor trailer, need to remember that the people they are serving are supporting the small business they work for. The food is good, but it's not cheap and I won't sacrifice my self respect for a lobster roll. The way the staff treated my husband last week was absolutely uncalled for and blatantly disrespectful. I realize that there are policies in place due to Covid, but there is a way to request patrons follow them... especially since there is no signage posted, and there is no longer an outdoor mask mandate in MA. Demanding that a customer not touch a counter is absurd, especially considering that counter is 5 feet in the air, where you need to strain to pay with any type of card. Before you reprimand your customers and decide to bark orders at them, as if your a drill sergeant, perhaps you should pay closer attention to the fella handing out the food - who touched literally everything, including the garbage, and did not change his dirty gloves once. This place has really gone downhill! Lobster roll used to be $13 and all lobster with great fries, now the price has been raised to $18 and they have added surimi ( fake lobster) to their mix. Tasteless! Do they think their customers won't notice? The price is ridiculous, even if all lobster! The Northampton hotel is a classy place and their all real lobster rolls are only $14! On a recent visit, we were served their fake lobster rolls along with over cooked, soggy French fries! Cap'tn Jack has gotten greedy! We won't be back! read more

Wow. If you're looking for a great traditional clamshack, just drive to the coast of Easthampton and stop at Captain Jack's. We stopped for lunch there today and thought it was great. The whole belly clams were amazing: just the right amount of breading, not oily at all, and most importantly tender and sweet. The fish in the fish and chips was a great blend of crunchy on the outside and yet moist and not overcooked on the inside. The handcut fries were delicious (and plentiful). I thought that the cole slaw was a little bland--a mashed clove of garlic or two would have given it a little zip--but it was good otherwise: crisp, a good mix of veges, and not drenched in mayo. Not a place your doctor would recommend you eat at every day, but they'll definitely be in our rotation of local spots we get excited to go to. I look forward to warmer weather and their outdoor seating. read more

Thank you yelp!!! Found this by the reviews and we were not disappointed! It is seasonal and we both had the lobster salad! It was light on the mayo and did not have any fillers- all tender meat! We have been on a lobster roll adventure this summer and this by far was the best and had plenty of meat for a reasonable price $20! It came with hand cut French fries which were also good. It is outdoor seating with umbrellas and canopy- one review said it was byob so we stopped at Dunkin just before going. However they did have a variety of beverages available. read more

My sweetie and I were at the national square dance convention in Springfield, MA, but we left just as the next tip started because we had built up powerful hungers, us being from GA. We Yelped "seafood" in the area, and Jack's popped up, so we went. My oh my. You know how hard it is to make great scallops, and how easy it is to ruin them? These guys did it perfectly - sweet, tender, busting out of the bun GA mountain style. My honey had her fish and chips with fried onions rings instead of french fries: excellent choice, sweetie, as generally you make. Fresh lemonade. Friendly folks in the kitchen engaged in getting you the best meal for your needs rather than just "blah blah blah lobster blah blah." Great fried clams -- not just "great for an inland restaurant." Because the fried clams were so good I tried the clam chowder, and it too was excellent: tasty, with plenty of clams, potatoes, bacon, and a broth -- not the thick, creamy mix that has come to be a standard measure of a clam chowder, but rather a real broth, real clams, potatoes, etc. Very, very good. Each time I've been there I've been sorry to have topass up the interesting-sounding options they also offer. It's easy to like this place and recommend it; I wish I got here more often. read more

Stopped in yesterday because it was cold and rainy and they had whole belly clams. As anyone who is a fan of them knows, whole belly clams are easy to screw up and are usually mediocre, so it was with great trepidation that I lifted the lid on this container once I got to my destination, but holy cow was that skeptical look turned into a smile. Nice light, airy and crisp..... but when I bit in, a flood of fresh clam juice... just the way it should be! They came, of course, with a lemon wedge and some tartar sauce, I did use these, but they really didn't need either. I will admit, this review is based solely on one dish, but they got it so right that they deserved the 5 stars. I'll update next time I'm there to try something else. read more

It's charming and if it's a sunny warm day then definitely worth the trip. That said...the food is road side shack snack bar food. Some items are over priced. Today was very busy and it took almost 45 minutes to get our food but they did warn us. Fish tacos are ok and a good value at 6.50 for two large tacos. A grilled chicken sandwich with Brie and greens was odd and well not so good. Greens were way over dressed and frankly the flavors did not work. I'd come back to sit in the sun have some fries n a burger and bring my own booze. Just don't expect much more and save your money to buy seafood closer to the coast. read more

Stopped by while passing through on the way home from VT and it was worth the detour. We both ordered lobster rolls and beverages. At first we thought the rolls were a bit pricey at $20 each, but once we got our order we realized that they're huge. Given that there must have been 1/2 lb of meat on there it's very reasonable. We didn't even finish the fries that came with it, though those were also good. The lemonade is very tart, which I personally love but if you're used to sweet lemonade you'll want to add sugar. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Captain Jacks. I visited today as a special treat to help usher in the joys of spring. The crispy chicken BLT I had was positively memorable, and the fella that took my order was very nice. I wish that the picnic tables weren't wet from the melting snow, but that just means I'll have to go back again and try more food.
