I had been back east for a while and was searching here and there for some famous Maryland crab cakes. If you like crab cakes, go to this restaurant and nom-nom-nom to your heart's content. Each cocktail I ordered was way too sweet for my liking, and the steamed veggies weren't very hot, but the crab cakes were absolutely to die for. The crab cakes here are glorious. Glorious, I say. The BEST CRABS I ever had! My family took this summer trip 2 years ago and drove all the way from NYC to Baltimore and spent 2 days there mainly to FEAST on their famous crabs and lobster and WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED! We went to other restaurants too but this place has no comparison. The crabs were just so perfectly cooked. I'm salivating just looking at these pictures again. Planning of going back very soon. (minus one star) However, they have outdoor seating over the water and on a nice day, it is quite fun to sit out there hammering away at crabs. We were a party of four and ordered a dozen of the medium crabs at $49.50, 3 corn on the cob, one cream of crab soup , ocean fries, a beer and a soda. They do not serve tap water and will charge you for bottled water. (minus one star). The bill was approximately $76 before tax and gratuity. The food was quite enjoyable but definitely on the pricey side. If you do order crabs, I recommend asking for the old bay seasoning on the side as your mouth will start to numb and you'll get extremely thirsty after your 2nd crab. I visited during the Pandemic 2020. They have outdoor seating and since I ride a motorcycle, I needed to eat there. The wait time was quoted at 45 min, I'm not sure if that was an average Saturday - nice day outside eating area wait time, or was it Pandemic 2020, I'm sick of looking at my apartment's four walls seating time, either way my wait time was what was quoted. Outdoor umbrella benched seating with brown paper to catch the mess that is to ensue, humble but gladly welcomed. All sides/fixins are a la carte, (you want it, you pay separate for each item), the prices are reasonable and they serve hearty portions.I was there for the crabs and that they delivered. Fresh, steamed X Jumbo blue crabs, covered in old bay goodness. Cooked to perfection with my a la carte corn and fries, which both were very good. I enjoyed myself so much, I rode down again during the week and had a better experience!!!! Mon - Thur is all you can eat blue crabs for 2 hours $40 per person, this deal included soup and corn. (9/17/2015) The update is that the place is so popular now that I would def call ahead before you head down to check if they are open to the public and if they still have AUCE crabs. We tried to go on 9/16 and the whole restaurant was shut down for a private event. Traffic and parking were already impossible, and to be rudely turned away (by the event people not the restaurant people) was just salt in the wound. Since I was playing tour guide and host to out of town relatives, I def wanted them to have a Maryland-style crab experience. We (like suckers) came back the next day to try again for AUCE crabs (yes, I did call ahead this time). The place was full, but at least open and we shared half a picnic table with a lovely couple visiting from Chicago. The crabs were awesome, they were enormous, and our server kept us well-stocked. FYI, Captain James is no longer the only place in the City on the water, I can think of at least Phillips and Nick's now. read more

This restaurant has an amazing view. Sitting on dock and eating crabs is so much fun. It is so cool. If you order the crabs, they just come out with a bucket of steamed crabs covered in old bay seasoning. The only utensil they give you is a hammer. You have to use the hammer to open the crabs. It is messy and hard to eat but still a lot fun. The wait staff is pretty nice. You will probably have to wait for a table though. Both times we had to wait at least 30 minutes. This is fun place to sit and eat on spring day. Depending on the size of crabs you get, the price can is pretty expensive. read more

Surprisingly, I never knew this place existed although I have parked in the parking lot and patronized Captain James Landing across the street. For some odd reason, I may have assumed that the Crab House was a loading dock or something. Anyway, on to the review... My friend and I decided to stop by Captain James Crab House on Labor Day. It was a last minute decision due to a suggestion from family members. It was a beautiful day, so we immediate went to the outside seating area. We opted for a seat right by the water. Service-wise, everything was awesome. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive to our needs. He recommended the $34.99 all-you-can-eat deal which included a cup of Maryland Crab Soup, an ear of Corn and of course unlimited Crabs. This was a great deal, seeing as though we would have paid $65/per person for a dozen small male crabs alone. The Maryland Crab Soup was decent. It could have used a little more seasoning. The corn was sweet with a good crunch, and the butter and Old Bay made it pop even more. My friend got the Cream of Crab Soup, which she didn't care for. She stated that it was too thick and needed more crab meat. The crabs themselves were pretty small and bland. Only a few of the crabs were actually meaty. I'm not sure if they had a bad batch that day, but I wouldn't recommend. Captain James Crab House gets three stars for free parking, ambiance, service and the corn. Came at 5pm on a Friday and the outside picnic tables were about a quarter full. Come with a big group and a want to work for your food...in order to get a liiiiiittle bit of meat you have to de-crab your crab. However, I am from here and I grew up here and I've been going to this place for the crabs for quite a long time and I've never been disappointed. Great night out with my son while staying in Baltimore. We were staying at the new Hyatt Place in east inner harbor and caught a taxicab to this place which was about $5 which we could have walked if we really wanted to. We had all you can eat crabs which include corn and crab soup; all which were good! The steamed crabs were really good as I am from Baltimore and know my crabs. I have been traveling past this place for years while I was living in Baltimore and never stopped but decided to get away from the Harbor and Try some locals place. What a way to start! We started at the main restaurant (the boat) and they told us we needed a reservation (even though it was pretty empty). No problem there, because they pointed us directly across the street at a second smaller location directly on the water, that could take us right away. So off we go.. As we were being seated the hostess asked if we wanted to put our tables together since we had a large party. However the guys that came over to put our paper down stated that we could not do that. This actually wasn't a big deal because we didn't ask it was offered but we quickly noticed another party had two tables together. It was awkward after i pointed out (to the waiters) the tables together next to us. They literally shrug shoulders (yup just like the emoji). Anywhoo... as we waited for menu's I noticed that the guys that put our paper on our table left some small news papers. I picked up to read through and noticed that this was our MENU's.. They never mentioned that (& yes we did mention that this was our first time coming here). This is something you guys would want to mention as your guest are seated! Our table had ordered as much variety as we could from the limited menu: Wings & Fries, Crab Cake and Corn and, Crab Cake and sweet potatoe fries. I didn't have the wings but from my sister (who was from out of town): "The wings were done very well, it seems as if they were brined, because the meat actually had flavor". The crab cake was 'meh'. I literally had to POUR old bay seasoning on it for me to enjoy it. A lot of breading throughout the crab, we wish the lump meat was as noticeable (sad face). The corn seemed to be straight off the stalk from the field of the farm, not season nor buttered. Very boring and way too much work peeling it like a banana! Didn't enjoy that part AT ALL.. The atmosphere was great, our waiter was awesome (even though he dropped vinegar down my sons back), but we were with family so we didn't complain. Insert "I'm with crabby" here. I feel like crushing some all you can eat crab, on a Friday night, right on the water is a moment of passage for those who live in Baltimore. Although, it took my beautiful girlfriend and I over a year to make the leap, we finally did it. It was an overcast Friday evening which made for a less busy crowd and we were able to walk right in. While sitting along the water and the help of our waiter explaining to us the valuable technique, we were able to enjoy enough crab to the point where were both happy we didn't wear tight clothing. Although half of the crab got all over my polo, we were still able to enjoy it until our stomach's couldn't fit anymore. Lucky for us we had a great waiter who was extremely helpful and made the experience easier for us. He also hooked us up with a great deal since the docks were a bit empty that night and man did that help us get our money's worth. Cool spot to come to, especially if you live in the Baltimore area. Does this make us true Baltimoreans now? Do I start putting old bay on everything or have the Maryland flag on everything I own? Captain James Crab House is a great place to go with a group. There is plenty of outdoor seating with a nice view of the water. They also have pitchers of Boh and delicious hush puppies (both a must), as well as corn hole boards which always seem to be occupied. The menu is very limited at the crab shack, which might pose a problem if someone in your group doesn't eat crab (full menu, minus the steamed crabs, can be had across the street at the main restaurant). However, the Asian Spice wings might just be fantastic enough to satisfy these people. Also important to note: this place has a free parking lot. Which of course kids find to be pretty cool. Why lose 3 stars? 1. It took awhile for someone to greet us when we walked in. 2. When we were greeted we were told we had 90 minutes to order and eat because a reservation was scheduled. This definitely didn't sit well with me. Who wants to have to rush through their meal ***3. GRATUITY is ALWAYS included no matter how small or large your party is. We were a party of 4 and our gratuity was $20 and definitely wasn't worth it service wise****also this should be stated somewhere in the restaurant for customers to see. 4. Service was terrible. I couldn't understand our server. He literally had to write everything down word for word which took forever. On top of that he kept forgetting things we asked for. We didn't get our drinks until our entrees came out. 5. Don't ask the water boy for anything apparently he can only serve water. We asked him for napkins and a straw and his reply "I can only refill water." Totally unacceptable. When it comes to amazing customer service everyone should chip in. Overall, the food is amazing, service is lacking majorly. I wonder if the automatic gratuity has anything to do with the lack of amazing service. Their secret ingredient is cream cheese. It was used to excess in their market price crab cake. It was also used excessively in their fries. I was in Baltimore for a conference for work from Cleveland. I have been to Maryland several times and loved it every time, this time I came to Baltimore and all I ever wanted was all you can eat crab before I left! I researched before we went and came across this place. I said lets go and we fought the insane traffic by our hotel and made it. We originally were sitting outside before it began to rain, then asked to be moved inside. (within a few minutes it was pouring and the rest had to be moved). Our waitress was so incredibly rude! The manager didn't even seem to care that everyone we came in contact with was so nasty. We get the mallets and start getting excited, the corn comes and we get nothing for it just the corn which was not great. The soup came and it literally was vegetable soup (from a can) with crab in it!?! I mean I loved the stuff as a kid I knew right away. The crab came and it was very good except we didn't exactly know what we were doing so we looked around and started to wing it. Crab was good the only issue was the there was a little more Old Bay then what I can handle. (but I am a wimp) the waitress had a terrible attitude and forgot everything! I had to remind her to bring me my water and someone else's drink, I even had to remind her to give me a bill when she gave it to everyone else. I have higher morals then anything. This weekend, I went to Captain James's Crab House for the first time with my boyfriend and his parents. We ordered a dozen of Maryland blue crabs, and wow. They were so incredibly fresh and perfectly seasoned, and it was so nice just eating crabs with a beautiful view of the harbor. We took a family trip and it was my first time eating crabs... Especially the desk for all u can eat was a great deal. The meal came with two corn of the cobs and I had their specialty drink that came in a fish bowl.. Delicious.. Definitely worth the wait. For the kids they had french fries, sweet potatoes fries and wings. We ate inside due to having children with us but everything was great asking with the view. Went here to try the notorious Baltimore crab during my visit. The atmosphere was amazing! We got lucky, a nice outdoor bench with a view of the waters. The crowd was fun and loud. I ordered calamari and hush puppies...loved the hush puppies. Calamari is okay, I am usually not a fan anyways. Now for the crab, I don't know the first thing about eating crab! But the waiter kindly showed me how to go about it even though he was allergic...and whatever I managed tasted fantastic. Their seasoning is really good!
