The chicken was fried in old burned oil, Cole slaw was in a small soufflé cup, one slice of bread and the fries was the only thing that was decent. They had several young kids working there. The employees at this location do not care. They prioritize answering the phone over taking orders from customers in line. I witnessed this for over an hour. I bet you want to know why I was there for over an hour? Me too. I ordered 10 whole wings at 3:07 and was quoted 20-25 minutes. I came in a little early and sat and waited for 10 wings while countless orders were incorrect. When I finally received my food, at 4:16 it was cold. WHY? How is that possible? This is one of the many Captain Jays around the Detroit and metro Detroit and the chain is steady growing. I have visited this location numerous times and I have the same experience every time. Some Captain Jays have mini grocery stores inside of them and this location does. This can be very convenient if you do not want to visit a grocery store for basic items. It's always pretty clean here and they have tvs to watch while waiting for your food. The service is always fast and the staff is quick and polite most of the time. The women behind the counter can have an attitude sometimes. I have yet to have a bad meal from here. They fry the fish perfectly (not too hard, not too soft) and the fries are wonderful. They dust the fries and fish with lemon pepper and they charge you $1 if you want extra, which is kind of extreme. You know how with some places, the food is great one day and the next, it isn't? Captain Jays is pretty consistent. This is the only location is Southfield (which is where I live now) so I will definitely continue to come here when I'm craving catfish. read more

I decided to try this new location on the West Side of Detroit off 8 Mile the other day. After getting past the lemon pepper breading (there was way too much on there) the chicken was surprisingly tender. I was also happy they placed the hot chicken on wax paper instead of on the bottom of the Styrofoam box. One of of their other locations didn't do that and the chicken melted the Styrofoam. The customer service was actually decent as well. Hopefully it will stay that way. read more

An hour later the order was ready and the food wasn't made according to my request. I go back to the location to speak to the manger who doesn't turn to face me to converse but rather holds the conversation leaning on his elbow as if we were chillin and shootin the breeze. When addressed about the situation his only response is "what am I supposed to do, give you free food? He then states that in his 8 months of being the manager I'm the only person to complain about an order not being correct. It is obvious that this location doesn't believe in customer service and disregards customer complaints. I ordered ahead at 9:15 (chicken tenders and fries) and was told 15 minutes; got to the counter after 9:35 (after a lady went on a rant about waiting an unreasonable amount of time herself....not a good sign.) and paid for what I thought was completed food, turns out the order hasn't even been started. For one of the dinners we substituted fries for okra, which was a dollar extra. However, it was well worth the extra buck. The fish was fresh well seasoned, and the okra was too! First time at this location and initially I was impressed. It's a lot cleaner than the other locations and the selection of groceries Is awesome. I order some jumbo shrimp and fries and my boyfriend ordered tilapia and fried mushroom. We placed our order, paid, (when she handed me my receipt, she circled my order number and told me to listen for it) and sat for a bit. Taking longer than expected, I decided to pick my daughter up from school (less than a mile) and swing back by. The building is very nice and tidy but the service was terrible. The first time i ate there i didnt like the food because it tasted as if they fried everything in the same grease. I decided to give them a second chance because their other locations have very good food. When i called to order the girl who answered was talking in her background, when she finally took my order she took my number and said "we will call you when its done". After almost an hour I called them and the girl gave me attitude saying to just come get my order. Once i explained I never got a call she acted as if they couldnt find an order under my name, once they finally found it she gave no apologies and just expected me to come get the food. I realized that my food would either be reheated or they just forgot to make it so i decided not to even pick it up. The building is nice and the TVs are a nice touch but they should hire more professional cashiers because they were loud and ghetto acting. I was told to call 2 hours ahead and that it would take about an hour to prepare. I called the day before my party and was told the exact same thing. So, on the the day of my party I decided to call extra early anyway just to ensure my food would be ready. I called at 10:40 am to order my wing dings for pick up at 4:15 pm. The young lady on the phone took down my info to call me if necessary. Needless to say, I spent my whole day preparing and setting up my venue. On the way to pick up my wings at 4:00 pm, my husband suggested we call so they would know we were on our way, only to find out that the wings WERE NOT ready! In fact, they hadn't even been cut or prepped! After asking to speak with a supervisor, the manager proceeded to tell me that their "cutter" didn't get in until late and they were just extremely busy. Well guess what, that's not my problem if your "cutter" didn't show up or you were extremely busy! I put my order in more than 5 hours ahead of time after 2 prior calls to inform you of the large order that you insisted you could fulfill! Furthermore, no one even attempted to call and let me know there was an issue with staffing or completing my order! I was told there was no compensation for the error and I had to just suck it up. I was rushed off the phone, disrespected, and left high and dry! Thank the Lord I was able to order wing dings from chicken shack! They were more than helpful and had my order ready in 20 minutes!
