I have been going to Fresh Fish, west 8 mile/Wyoming location for years. I would normally highly recommend. Not anymore! They continue to increase prices. Do you know how much fish I could have bought for $30. Then for my fries to be refried & hard was a great disappointment. I drove 10 miles and order a quart of Gumbo and drove back home. Upon opening it the gumbo was thick and had a strong odor of mussels. It was over cooked Fresh Fish House gumbo substance is thin. There was no rice or seafood except for a few mussels. It looked like oatmeal. I called Fresh Fish House Eight-mile location. The guy who served me answered the phone. He told me to bring it back. I drove back to the store and the cashier with the short hair sometimes blue other times pink took the gumbo looked in the container and said loud in front of the customers," Did you put water in this?" I said, "No!" Then she said," are you sure?" her question surprised me because the gumbo was thick as oatmeal. She has worked there for a good while and knows how the gumbo supposed to look. She was putting on a show in front of the customers. Then she takes the gumbo to the man who served me the gumbo and said, "Look at this water." He didn't lift up his head. He knew the gumbo wasn't right when he put it in the container. The cashier tells me, "I'll give you another order" and walk to the back. She returned without the gumbo because the entire batch was over cooked. I ask her to return the gumbo. I didn't like how she tried to make me look like a gumbo thief who ate the gumbo filled the container with water and returned it and the gumbo was my proof it was over cooked. She refused to return the gumbo and walked to the cash register and returned my money. This is the type of employee that gets the company food inspected and shut down for an untrue laugh. read more

I ordered an ocean perch dinner. The food was not hot. The steak fries were too hard to eat. The fish pieces were so small that I could fit 3 pieces on a single slice of bread. The fish was fried with and soaked in some old grease. You cold see the old grease on the fish. The smell of fish was very loud and made me want to upchuck. The staff was nice, but that was it. I don't know who their cook is, but they need to get another one. When I gave up trying to find anything salvageable in the meal, I gave it to my dog, and she looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I have always enjoyed going to the Fresh Fish House, since everything is always fresh in there (like the name says), and they have quite a variety of seafood. If you want, they can also fry the fish however you like, and it always comes out delicious. I have never had a complaint about this establishment. Fair warning to all who wish to visit: Parking is rather limited, and some weekends, they can be rather crowded. So, put on your walking shoes if you plan to visit on a weekend, especially toward the beginning of the month, since you may have to walk a block or two from your vehicle to them. Also, if you walk-in and order your fish dinner, there is very little space to wait for them to prepare it. There have been times when my mother and I stood for nearly an hour inside here because there was little space and hardly any seating. If you're looking for that good ol' crispy, salty, greasy Southern Fried Catfish, this is the place right here. Bar none the best fried catfish in Detroit!!! The place is also very clean. Hardly a dirty spot was to be found on the floor or the glass where the fish sits. I actually witnessed the owners checking the fish to make sure they were still fresh with gloves on. The employees were also very cordial. They didn't come across as if they had an attitude or didn't want to be there. Lastly, it's not like a lot places in the city where you're speaking to people through plexiglass. The transactions are face-to-face, hand-to-hand and over the counter. It's a little pricey (for a few fillets, you're going to be spending at least $10-15), but it's very much worth it. The fish is always fresh and they have a nice selection, but the later you come he less fish you have to choose from. Not all of their locations have whole fish to choose from, however the 8 mile and highland park location does. The fish eyes are clear and plump, and it never has a "funky" fish smell.
