Got a 10 PC dark. Got home 15 minutes away to find re-fried chicken hard as hell. Manager said I can get a replacement whenever I come back. I went back a week later after calling to remind him of my issue. He said 10 minutes. I get there, checked the chicken and it was the same. Fried very hard. I complained and he acted like he didn't care at all but started to fry more BUT I realized he was just re-frying more chicken. I complained again saying I don't want re-fried chicken. He said "you want it in the flour?" I said yeah. He walked in the back like he really didn't wanna be there. I told him to just give me a refund. I stopped here on my way to my family's event to grab some fish. It is located off of Evergreen in a plaza. There is eating, but most seem to do take out. I tend to go to another place and this was the first time i've come here. I saw that was close to where my destination was gonna be. The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and took my order quickly. She even regularly updated me on when my order was gonna be done. I checked out the desserts that you could and some of the sides. There is cake, peach cobbler, cole slaw and other sides. The fish was good and very well seasoned. The customer service is the worst ever at these places. Ordered a pan of 50 wings for the Super Bowl, call prior to going to make sure they will be ready. Get there and tell them my name then the girl asks for my number, then asks if I have a different number. She finally finds it and tells the young dreaded/braided guy to ring me up, he rings me up for 100 wings, I tell him I ordered 50, he's looking clueless. The girl tells him and he fixed it. The kitchen staff if trying to figure out what's needed and they're thoroughly confused, I yell 50 wings! They send the pan out to the girl, she asks if I want lemon pepper and I say yes please. She boxes the wings and I get home with them for guests. Open the box, no lemon pepper on the damn wings ! I go back the day after to get lemon pepper the young girl working there wants to give me 3 small sparsely filled containers, I say I still have over 30 wings! X she asks what size I want, tell her enough for the 50 wings they missed, she goes in the back and comes out wanting to ring me up for $10!! I paid $69 for the 50 wings!!! Why in hell would I pay them another 10?!! Save your money and come the wings yourself. I've been to 5 different locations over time hoping for different results, but clearly it's insanity at this point!! Never no more!! read more

When you say "Crack chicken" everyone knows you are talking about Captain Jays! Once you eat you always want to go back! You must tell them to put the lemon pepper seasoning on it too! This place has several locations, I happen to pop at the one in Southfield. I will say always call in advance to order. These are whole wings that you getting and the crunch factor is on point! The shrimp is not over breaded so you can taste the shrimp! You have your choice of the regular pop, Faygo and kool aid just like home! I didn't really get a chance to take a pic of the food because I went to town as soon as I got it! Lol! The staff at this location was nice I had no complaints. This place is very inconsistent. I've gone times when food and service sucks, I've gone times where it's all good. My advice, don't go with high expectations or to hungry. This time, my husband and I went and service was solid and food was excellent. I had three chicken tenders and macaroni and cheese. The chicken tenders were so juicy and filled me up. I wasn't crazy about the macaroni and cheese but my husband said it was okay. Of course, lemon pepper is bomb and you should always get a healthy shake over everything you order. In the past my husband has patronized this business. We live around the corner, frequent the Summer concerts on the Civic Center lawn and order food for at least 6-8 ppl. On the first day of Fall we ordered 20 wings ...that's it...20 whole wings. We sat in the parking lot for the 15 minutes it was supposed to take to fry our wings...went inside and the idiots told us that they lost our order slip! Wait! What? I called on Saturday the 28th to place an order for NYE. I went to pick it up around 6:30 (the time I was told it would be ready) and everyone stood there looking confused. I explained that I placed the order in advance and that someone told me that it should be ready. The manager (I guess she was the manager) told me she couldn't find my order and offered to make my food. I declined because I was already irritated with this location and I didn't want them making my food. Someone in the back snidely said 'did she call the right location?' I left after that and sat in my car. I then googled the number to this location and cross matched it with my call history. I then went back inside to ask again if they could find my order. I stated that I called on Saturday morning at 11am and the manager says "oh I wasn't working that day." Are you kidding me? The unprofessionalism was so upsetting. The least she could've done was apologize or offer a discount on my order. But her attitude was so nonchalant that I was completely turned off to her. read more

Utterly marginal. As none of the combination plates had anything other than chicken wings as the chicken portion of the combo, I ordered the two breast meal, while hubby ordered the catfish meal. We swapped a piece of catfish for a chicken breast and both had a decent combo. I thought the catfish was far better than the chicken. The chicken was far too salty, and the breading wasn't all that. The catfish, on the other hand, was fresh, hot and delicious. The coleslaw was okay, but the potato salad was utterly miserable. Way too sweet and way too much mayo to potato ratio. Both the coleslaw and potato salad were ridiculously miniscule portions. Maybe 2 tablespoons in each container. Hubby referred to them as shot glasses, which was fairly accurate. The fries were ok. The piece of bread underneath was a regrettable afterthought. Of interest, the fish was not served with tartar sauce. And the condiments are kept behind the counter, with the employees acting like each ketchup packet was coming out of their personal paycheck. I tried this place, but doubt I'll be back anytime soon. Used to be a good place to eat. I would give this place negative 10 stars for the sheer ignorance, nastiness and laziness of the staff tonight. Don't ever waist your time or money here. After waiting over an hour and having to correct the ignorant staff who overcharged us for the meal, we get home to find out the order is horrible and a waste of $40usd. In my fish meal there was hair in the fries(see photo), the fish was dried out and disgusting, there were mystery rocks on the very dried up biscuits which had absolutely NO butter or honey on them as advertised. We tried calling numerous times to speak with management and when a very rude female finally picked up she put us on hold for 30 minutes without ever picking up. When trying to call back we figured out that she took the phone off the hook so it would just ring busy. I hate the food and the staff as they are a waste of energy and space, and this was a horrible experience. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. read more

So now there's another chicken place on Evergreen. I think the overall quality and food is okay. The service is underwhelming. I had a combo with catfish and shrimp. The food was prepared hot. In fact, you're best taking a bit of pause and letting it cool off to not burn yourself. The fish was crisp and moist. The shrimp wasn't that great. Overall, though, I like fried food. I eat it a lot. But this fryer felt a bit more greasy and heavy after you eat it. I'm not sure what they use as their oil, but maybe that's what's causing it? So it's a decent place, but with so many more options in this area, this is in middle of the pack. read more

I have come in twice in the past week and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Per the other reviews, yes, whatever music or satellite radio station they have on is pretty loud and mostly rap, but i don't really care about music when i'm on my lunch break... but if you're easily offended by loud rap music, then skip this place. Overall i had the shrimp and the fried chicken breast and they were good. I would give the shrimp 3 stars as they were breaded evenly and cooked well, but the size was lacking (which isn't always the cook's fault). The chicken was tender and juicy and came hot and fast, and the breading was crispy and seasoned well, maybe just a tad bit too much salt. The fries were lackluster and kind of limp though- need to cook them more or at a higher heat; maybe they were under a heat lamp for too long or something too. I definitely prefer this place's chicken over KFC but the salty chicken breading probably would lead me to only come here maybe once or twice a month. They do have lunch specials for $5 - but the savings you get is only from a smaller entree portion. You're better off getting the numbered combos on the regular menu rather than the lunch combos- you'll get more food, and still a soft drink for only a dollar more than the lunch special. 4 stars for food, 2 stars for atmosphere and service- it would be easier to have the condiments and plastic silverware and napkins in the dining area rather than having it all behind the counter. I ordered a 2 pc Whiting combo (fish and chips). They do not have tartar, lemon or Malt vinegar available. It comes dusted with lemon pepper-EVERYTHING does. They breaded two skanky pieces of fish skin in cornmeal, deep fried it until it was tough to chew and served it to me dry with no tartar, lemon or my favorite, malt vinegar. They do give you a slice of sandwich bread- dry, right out of the bag. Not even toasted. I was so excited a fish and chip place had opened locally. Wont be back. read more

I visited Captain Jay's on Saturday. Had not gone there in a while but I remembered how delicious the food was and decided to get my regular order. The wait was not too long but I was so disappointed with the food this time. It was perfectly fried but not tasty at all. Even the addition of the lemon pepper could not improve the taste of my food. I was so disappointed I submitted a complaint online and 10 minutes after I hit the send button, the General Manager called me back. Very courteous and understanding.
