The search for the elusive Best Breakfast Burrito in the San Clemente Area continues. I read some reviews about Captain Mauri's Counterculture on Yelp when I searched for breakfast burrito near San Clemente. I wanted to try some place I had not been, and frankly have never heard of. I've only lived in San Clemente for 24 years, so I'm still exploring. Ha! Hidden away on Del Mar, I actually passed the place when I first drove by trying to find it. I've been on Del Mar many times and must have seen it, but had not stopped in. No wonder so many reviews had "hidden gem" comments. Yelp guided me to Cap'n Mauri and I walked in at about 7:30am on a Saturday, since I read that they open at 7:00am. I really liked that, since a bunch of places where I want to try their breakfast burritos don't open until 9am or even 10am. For me 10am is too late for breakfast. I'm just weird that way, certainly not a brunch guy! When I entered the lights were low and the outside umbrellas were on the floor inside, so I asked if they were open. The person said "yes, it's OK". When I asked about the opening time she said 7 or 7:30. Ok, that's good to know. I didn't see any breakfast burritos on the menu hanging above the counter, so I asked and was told the breakfast burritos have eggs, cheese and choice of carne asada, bacon, sausage or turkey. I think there were more choices, but can't recall. Also, you can add hash browns or avocado. Assuming the kitchen was open, I put my order in for a burrito with hash browns AND avocado added. Stand back, serious business happening here. I had a choice of mild or spicy salsa. I asked for both on the side to give them a try. I sat in the empty restaurant and checked out the paintings and other cool parts of the interior. They have a small counter area where you can sit and also some tables out on the patio. I was liking the place and the vibe was very mellow and laid back. Would be interesting to come when there were people hanging out. The burrito was ready and while I kinda wish I had eaten it there, I had asked for it to go so I headed out to try the BB at home a couple minutes away. The bag had some heft, so it was a good size burrito without even seeing it. The total bill was about $20, so it felt pricey, but I did have a Diet Coke and had added the potatoes and avocado. Wish I had taken a copy of the bill to show the breakdown. At home I freed the burrito from its paper and plastic wrappings, cut it in half and posed the burrito for the obligatory photo shoot. Nice looking burrito. While not long, it was densely packed with ingredients. It was a beautiful sight to see and thus the heft of the bag. It makes the wife laugh and cringe, but I popped open the little salsa containers and took a sip of each one. I like to try the salsas in their raw form before I put them on any foods. Both delicious and neither one very spicy. I did like the mild salsa's taste better than the spicy one. The spicy one could have used more kick, but I do know that spice levels change with each batch of salsa made so I will try again next time. (Spoiler alert, there will be a next time.) After the tasting, I will be using both salsas on the burrito as I consume it. That's why I do it. Full disclosure, I also drink the rest of the salsas if I don't use them all during the eating phase of my breakfast burritos, or any food served with little containers of salsa. Not from the bottles, I'm not an animal. This also makes the wife laugh and cringe. If you have read this far you must be asking yourself, "is this guy gonna review the dang burrito itself or just keep on rambling?" I will review the burrito, but first a message from our sponsor. Just kidding, here we go: The eggs were cooked perfectly. The avocado was nicely ripe and the hash browns were awesome. I didn't get that much taste of bacon, but it was in there and cooked great as well. The eggs and the avocado dominated the taste and the hash browns gave a nice crunch without being over cooked crunchy. The tortilla was slightly dry, but not completely falling apart dry, so this would have been a 5 star breakfast burrito if the tortilla would have been a bit less dry. Captain Mauri's Counterculture (not sure how counterculture fits in) is one of the best breakfast burritos in San Clemente. Top five, from my experiences, for sure. As always, I will come back and give it another try to check for consistency and as I mentioned earlier, I will be coming back. When I return, I will likely not add the avocado and I will try the sausage. Don't get me wrong, the avocado was fresh and delicious, it just overpowered the rest of the burrito and I usually don't have avocado in my breakfast burritos, I was just trying to be wild this morning. Do yourself a favor and head over to Cap'n Mauri and get yourself a tasty, almost perfect breakfast burrito. A hidden gem for sure! Go. Eat Well! HAVE FUN!

Chorizo and Potato Breakfast Burrito - customized :)

I wanted to try something new this morning and was craving a great breakfast burrito. I checked out yelp and stumbled upon John M's review and it sold me to walk across the street... haha, yes I had just parked my car and coincidentally I parked directly across the street so I said "why not" let's try it. Only one other customer was inside when I arrived which would normally make me second guess if this was the right choice but I proceeded with my order. I ordered the chorizo potato breakfast burrito and the menu said it has 3 jumbo eggs for $12.99 + tax ~ I'm not a huge eggy burrito fan and so I modified my ordered... I requested 2 eggs + add hashbrowns. The chorizo mixture she said has potatoes mixed in but I was really wanting a good "potato burrito" hehe. I promptly received my order and it was piping hot with two hot sauce sides. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! Thank you John M. for your review and swaying me towards Captain Mauri's. Honestly, 9.8/10 guys! I know your gonna be like whatttt that good. Yes guys, it hit the spot... just what I needed, a classic burrito.

Spinach Feta Avocado omelette with hash browns.

Great place, tucked back on a busy street. Breakfast served until noon, but we were able to order two delicious omelettes at 12:15pm. Both came, piping hot, with generous slices of perfectly ripe avocado on top. My spinach feta omelette was so good. My husband's ABC (avo-bacon-cheese) was also delicious. A lot of people came in to order food to go. Many regular customers. The service was really good. Plenty of seating. Clean interior. Very homey and warm.

I love this place. I've been coming here since it was captain culver's.... Over 20 years ago... and the things I'm obsessed with are: 1. Bombay Melt (curried chicken with secret Bali sauce, tomato, onion, and cheese atop an English muffin) served with soup of the day, green salad, or potato salad 2. POG- passionfruit, orange, guava juice. They also have delicious smoothies. The place is owned by Mauricio but you'll often find his daughters working the restaurant. :) They are lovely people with excellent customer service. You can sit inside or outside. It's a very laid back vibe. You order at the counter, and then they will bring your food out to you or call you when it's ready. The only thing you need to know, is sometimes they close a little early.. even though their hours are usually till 16:00, I've found them closed at 15:00 or 15:30. I suspect it all depends on how busy they are. So, if you want an afternoon snack, I recommend you call ahead to make sure they are still open.

Oh Captain My Captain - this is a true San Clemente gem. The signature chicken salad, juice drinks, soups, breakfast - all served by the same family that have operated for years. Open most days from 7:30 am to about 3:30. No Door Dash or Uber eats to slow down the service. Call ahead or walk in and order. Ask for Janey and tell her John sent you.

I love this place and think the food is GREAT and FILLING AND HEALTHY! HOWEVER!!!! They do not take any form of payment besides CASH! This is annoying, and many time I pull up to get a sandwhich, and notice I dont have any cash on me, and decide to go to another restaurant down the street. Great little spot for lunch, but I'm not sure that the lunch special is very special. It was a 1/2 of a little sandwich and a heaping mountain of potato salad. It was only $7.50 so I'm not really complaining, but I left a little hungry. Probably great for somebody who's not super hungry. The menu looks like it would be fun to explore. I love Captain Mauris! The healthy juices are so fresh and amazing - the "Tonic" juice is healing and my body literally craves it. The breakfast burritos are excellent, and ask for a side of hot sauce! Coffee always great. The staff and quiet, humble and very good at their jobs. They go the extra mile when it comes to service. It's a weekly spot for me, as I live on Del Mar. read more

Not a regular in San Clemente but a local recommended this place for Sandwiches, Soups and Salads. I'm glad I stopped there, I got the Chicken melt sandwich and garden salad. It was delicious, exactly what I was looking for. read more

I haven't been here in a while and everytime I come back hoping Captain Maurie would have figured out how to make the Bombay melt as good as it was when Captain Culver owned it. But once again I was terribly disappointed. The chicken was dry, the cheese wasn't substantial like before and it was missing that tasty green sauce touch. I paid around $12 bucks ($14.50 with tip) for the 2 halves of the English muffin with a potato salad that was beyond sour I couldn't even eat it. I'm hardly in town and when I am I hope to grab those flavorful foods that are solely San Clemente. This is like my 4th attempt over the years and I have been disappointed everytime. My hope is that the quality improves and the attention to the flavor and detail when serving these dishes Captain Culver entrusted the new owner with will be renewed. Overall this place has always been super pricey but for what I got I have to say definitely not worth it. read more

I only give them 3 stars because they don't have very good customer service. Not very friendly and definitely not welcoming. But they also have never been rude. Just very boring personalities maybe? Or too cocky as if they don't need your business.... I don't mind as I learned to just order to go. However, the food is amazing! Great soups and great smoothies. But my all time favorite is the Bombay melt. They never disappoint with this dish. The chicken curry in it is absolutely amazing and full of flavor. read more

Everyone is right about the Bali burger sauce being totally awesome! They should sell it at the farmers market. I'm not a huge fan of the veggie burger patty, though. Same ones Costco is selling now after pulling the good 'ol Morningstar originals, but I'm assuming that's just their lot right now if they source from Costco. Lovely little alcove patio on Del Mar where you can sit with your pooch, watch the foot traffic & nosh on yummy food. The potato salad has a unique undertone I can't quite identify... Didn't blow my mind, but it was good enough to save the leftovers for later. All in all, fresh, clean, quality food with a different set of flavors than a typical "healthy" joint. The burger is huge, so I really don't think you need any side to fill you up. I'll be back for sure! read more

This is one of my favorite lunch spots in town. The family that runs this business is very friendly. My dad and I come in here all the time and they greet us by name. All of their food is delicious and fresh, but their veggie burgers are to die for. Definitely try the Bali Burger, the Bali sauce is a super yummy lime ginger concoction that I could drink from the bottle. Their chicken curry salad sandwich is also soooo good. read more

Ate a quick bite for lunch here with the wife today. I got the turkey sandwich while my wife got the veggie burger. Service was quick, we got there early and it was easy to get in and out, but saw how quickly this small place fills up. Sandwich was fresh and light, my wife's veggie burger was impressively good, as someone who never orders veggie I was impressed! Lunch was affordable for 2 (something others on Del Mar ave should consider) would come back again and recommend to others looking for a good quality lunch. I heard breakfast is pretty legit too. read more

This review is solely based on the customer service. We went a few days ago for Mother's Day and were really excited to try this place based off all the great reviews. When we walked in there were a few people eating inside and some on the patio. One of girls working there happened to be walking in the door the same time we were and awkwardly looked us up and down before walking in front of us. We get up to the menu board and start looking at the menu for a small amount of time. All the while the cashier is standing there watching us look at the menu. When we try to begin our order she just says "we are closed". I was kind of surprised, given that other people were eating around us. So we stood there in awkward silence for a few moments before I finally said "is there a reason you are closed?". The cashier was obviously annoyed and said to my husband, daughter, and I that today is Mother's Day and we would rather be home with our families then working. Okay ... so we left without trying the food and ended up going to our normal sandwich shop, Board and Brew over off of Pico. The reviews sound great and the food looks awesome but their customer service needs some work. I'm a mother and I understand wanting to be home for special holidays, but I would never treat a customer that way. It would be have nice to be told that they were closed with a sign or politely when we walked in. Instead she allowed us to stand there and decide what we thought sounded good before telling us they are closed. Overall it was just a weird experience read more

I work on the street so I visit Captain Mauris at least 3 times a week! I've tried a good amount of their breakfast, lunch and beverage options. I don't think many people are aware they're open for breakfast, because it's rarely ever busy in the mornings, but it's amazing! For vegetarians you have to try the life extender sandwich it's filled with loads of veggies and cheese. They have by far the best acai bowl in town and the mango ginger smoothie is amazingly yummy too! For a "health conscious" option in San Clemente, Captain Mauris is a must! WARNING: They're cash only, but they do have an ATM near the register that charges a dollar to withdraw money. read more

2 eggs - over-easy, hash browns - extra crispy, bacon - extra crispy, coffee - black. Thanks. This is what I order for breakfast, anywhere. Hash browns and bacon rarely come out even just a little crispy, eggs are under/over cooked. They don't have my hot sauce. Coffee is hit or miss but it always does the job. Captain Mauri's may seem unassuming walking by but by golly, they are the best kept breakfast secret in San Clemente (maybe the world?). This place has mastered what TV restaurant critics say is crucial to restaurants - consistency. I've come sporadically over the past couple years and every single time, the hash browns are extra crispy with a thin layer of steamed fluffy potatoes inside (lots of 'em, too). The bacon slices (also a lot of them!) are always crispy crunchy just like I love, the eggs are always perfectly runny. Add to it the 15 hot sauces at your fingertips and I'd call that a perfect breakfast. In fact, I'd call it the best breakfast in San Clemente. They're good for your mouth and good for your wallet. Their breakfast menu has multiple options to choose from, ranging from Huevos Rancheros to Omelets to Bagels... The Hanalei Dream smoothie is a favorite of mine along with the Chunky Monkey. Parking can be a hassle at times. Seating inside tends to get warm. Over all it's a delightful experience, the customer service is very unique. One of a kind. read more

My favorite place for breakfast in San Clemente (this review for breakfast only). This is a family run place and I've always found the staff to be sweet and the service just right and friendly. They make delicious fresh fruit smoothies with soy milk options, a great organic Acai smoothie and have fresh veggie juices. If you're into super health food, they also serve fresh wheatgrass juice. The breakfast options are straightforward: huevos rancheros, huevos mexicali, breakfast burritos, eggs how you like them, pancakes and good sides of avocado and different salsas. The black beans are amazing. Everything is made fresh. Your orange and grapefruit juice (and watermelon) juice are made in front of you. Coffee is good too. I love the simple, homey decor but I can see how people might not like the atmosphere. They could benefit from a cosmetic make-over but for the reasonable prices, fresh and delicious food, it's a little gem near the beach. read more

The food is great, the employees are nice, and helpful if you're not sure what you want, and it's a really great place to sit outside and people watch. Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day. This place is delicious. The hash browns are actual grated potato not frozen and everything is good with care. The lunches here are great with fresh made soups daily and big sandwiches . I don't eat meat but I always see people with Bombay melts and the smell so good. Anyhow the owners are a super solid family that all work to make this true home style cooking. Enjoy your meal read more

I will ask for less mustard next time since it overpowered the meat. I did enjoy my food.

Smokey, salty, tangy, plenty of umami with cilantro and pickled onions. Fire! The only thing i would have loved was some sort of salsa. Maybe there was and I missed it. Caesar salad wrap chicken - this was a sleeper hit. My daughter is a Caesar salad conissuer and this was right up her ally. And with avocado oil Caesar dressing, no garbage! Comeon. Still skeptical, I took the cup home, emptied out the ice, and measured it using my Pyrex measuring cup. 10 ounces filled it to the brim. It is a 10 ounce cup. I am greatly disappointed that when I asked about the size of the cup, the gentleman flat out lied to me. I find it hard to believe that when he tested the volume of the cup he didn't notice that 2 oz of his soda overflowed from the cup. The Picnic Cafe--please change your menu to reflect that you are selling 10 oz drinks, or change your prices to reflect that you are serving a smaller size. It is disrespectful and dishonest to continue doing business this way.

I hope this is just a one person issue or maybe a bad day but I would strongly encourage the business to take some time for some additional customer service training with this particular staff member.

Some parts were definitely a 3/5 but my chicken thigh was so good and the portions are *huge* so I feel like they deserve a 4/5? All in all, I think I'd come back if I wanted to go out with someone but save some money and we'd split one of the plates (the portions really are huge).

They've got indoor and also great outdoor seating depending on what is available or your preference. There is also a heater installed on the patio to make the outdoor dining comfortable. However, coastal evenings can turn chilly even in summer so bring a warm jacket or sweater. This will be very helpful to make a significant difference in your comfort.

By the time we got there (around 10am) it was packed and the rain was just picking up because before we got here, the car in front of us hydroplane and skid off the road and hit the curb. Yet, this place was still pack and parking was full. (We found street parking near Starbucks) I had my staff placed our name down since she lives closer, but they won't see you until all your party is here and that's fine. We ended up seating at the bar and left the booth for other parties. Love the teamwork, the staff were super stars doing a rush like that, let me tell you it PACKED HOUSE and we got our food and drinks on time, no one in my party had to wait to eat and I forgot to take pictures of my staff meals, only took mines and what I got for the table to share was a croissant french toast, which I believe was their special of the day. I got the chicken fried steak and the portion are MASSIVE!!! All of us took our food home because the portion size are insanely big and bang for the buck!! Great place to eat breakfast or brunch or even a 'Team Building Breakfast Time' LOL Just happy to treating out my amazing staff on their work. I will be coming back again to try out their lox bagels and chai tea. (It was in a massive cup that reminds me of the show FRIENDS.)

Despite that, she remained calm, polite, and handled herself with grace. If anything, she showed remarkable composure under unnecessary pressure. Service jobs aren't easy, and it's disappointing when unfair situations get misrepresented online. Based on what I personally observed, Tatum did nothing but her job and did it well. I've been a patron at this establishment for over 25 years, dating back to its days as Captain Culvers. However, in recent times, I've noticed a decline in the quality of the food. On my most recent visit, I ordered a chicken salad to go, and unfortunately, it will be my last time here. The cost of the salad was $15, and to my dismay, it contained a mere half-cup of chicken salad along with a few carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Notably absent were the sprouts, cashews, and avocado that were promised in the description. Adding to my disappointment, the owner (who also served as my server) neglected to use gloves while handling the food. I observed her using her bare hands in direct contact with the lettuce. This lack of adherence to basic cleanliness standards, coupled with the insufficient amount of chicken salad for the price, left me thoroughly dissatisfied. LOVE IT... LOVE IT... LOVE IT... What else can i say, the food is great, people are really friendly too. I live here in San Clemente and never ate here before so much great choices to choose from that I could not only get one so i bought lunch and dinner. For lunch I just had to go with every body else and have that BOMBAY MELT MM MM Delicious and for dinner I brought home a veggie wrap which is really good too. I cant Believe I have never been here before, but i definitely know where i will be eating alot more .Oh I forget to mention that very good veggie juice that i had it had apple and carrots and OJ oh my cant go wrong with this place its definitely a winner !! read more
