Friend ordered an iced honey almond milk matcha latte which was filled so high she spilled it while trying to put on the lid ("give them an extra star for that"). The barista and a random customer were both so nice to her offing to help her clean up. Another friend got the leg warmer latte (pumpkin + cinnamon + espresso) which was AMAZING! So smooth and warm and she said "latte art 10/10". I got this green juice that was way overpriced ($11.25!!?) and it didn't taste bad but it had no citrus so it just tasted sweet in a flat boring way. We swung by our hotel, the Colton Inn on Pacific St (https://www.yelp.com/biz/colton-inn-monterey), and asked the lady at the front desk, Christine, if she knew of any good local coffee shops nearby. She said she hadn't been, but it was "new" and everyone had been "raving" about it: "Captain and Stokes," she thought was the name. Close enough. :) I guess you could say Captain + Stoker is still relatively new. It opened in March 2018. Maybe she was referring to and/or conflated this location with Captain + Stoker's newer, but smaller, second location in adjacent Pacific Grove (https://www.yelp.com/biz/captain-stoker-pacific-grove). The Pacific Grove location opened in April 2022. The two locations are only about 2.5 miles (10 minutes driving) from one another. This Captain + Stoker location, at the corner of E Franklin St and Adams St (across from the Monterey Sports Center and Jacks Park baseball field), was only half a mile (10 minutes walking) from our hotel. During our visit, there was a nice selection of espresso drinks and tea plus a house drip coffee, pourover coffees, and more. They also had light bites like toast (different kinds, e.g., avocado, banana peanut butter), bowls, and pastries. We got two iced vanilla lattes with almond milk ($6.44 each; $0.52 for the housemade vanilla syrup, $1.03 for the almond milk) and one bottle of Central Coast Juicery's "Juice 2" ($11.85). The juice consisted of apple, kale, celery, lemon, and ginger. Both the lattes and the juice were cold, delicious, and refreshing. Christine at the Colton Inn gave us a great recommendation. If you're visiting Monterey like we were, I recommend you come here too if you're looking for some excellent local coffee. My wife is picky about her coffee and she thought the coffee here was "really good." She liked that it wasn't too sweet and she thought the layered presentation was eye-catching. I agree. The coffee was well-balanced. As for the juice, it was flavorful, nutritious, and quenched our thirst. In Pacific Grove, Captain + Stoker actually took over the space previously occupied by Central Coast Juicery. Service was great. Our server, Hannah, was very friendly. My wife struck up a conversation with her after I drank all the coffee and she went back to the counter for more. I really liked the space, inside and out. It has a cool, contemporary design. Nice big block letters, simple black and white paint, and lots of light fixtures on the outside. Industrial, exposed, loft feel on the inside. Three garage doors face the ballpark. Bicycles, used for decor, are a reference to two-person tandem bicycling where the front rider is the captain and the rear rider is the stoker (hence the business name, Captain + Stoker). The vibe was hip and laid back. The front door was propped open and one of the garage doors was retracted up, creating a breezy, comfortable, and relaxed open-air feel. I really enjoyed it. We got there at 10, and they were almost out of the pastries, which was a bummer, but they did have their kougn aman and it was really good! Had a bit of an orange flavor, which was unique. I'm normally not a coffee drinker but I stopped by Captain + Stoker for an afternoon pick-me-up to get energized for some evening festivities. The coffee shop was a short, breezy walk from the Convention Center. I arrived around 3:30 PM and it was buzzing with energy despite being close to closing. There was a line but it went fairly quickly. I got the Mocha with macadamia nut milk. I appreciated that they offer non dairy alternatives but it was a bit steep at $1 for the swap. But at the end of the day, the price was acceptable given it's a bit of a tourist spot. My drink came out pretty quickly too. It's definitely interesting in terms of decor inside. They have a big, live edge table and bicycles hanging from the ceiling. They have a single occupancy bathroom which was clean.
