Amazingly good coffee. I was staying in the downtown area and was happy to find this place near my hotel. I order three hot vanilla lattes for myself and two other family members. Oh my! The coffee was rich, velvety smooth while the milk was steamed just right. Specialty coffee takes time to prepare so it was worth the wait. Staff didn't cap the lattes which I appreciated. I take that first sip before I cap when taking it to go. I wish I had time to sit down to enjoy it. There was plenty of seating. I will definitely come back when I visit Monterey. I did grab one of their pins for my coffee apron at home.

Took a day trip out to Monterey and had to stop by Captain + Stoker. Heard good things about this spot and it didn't disappoint. We ordered the golden latte and vanilla latte. Both were good but would definitely double down on the vanilla lattes next time. We showed up in the afternoon on a weekday and all the pastries were out, so I'd recommend coming early to try any of those. Parking was easy and the employees were super nice!

Everything about this place was amazing! I got an oat milk cappuccino and their espresso was so smooth and delicious. The ambience was clean, inviting and made me feel so happy just walking in there. The service was great. They were super fast despite being incredibly busy. Even if you had to wait a little bit, it is so nice in there that it's relaxing. It's a vibe, definitely a must try.

This coffee shop is so beautiful, I loved that bike hanging there. Super creative! Their coffee is really good. I tried their Colombia and Panama pour over and the Colombia is my favorite one. You should definitely try that one. The pastries were not that great, I didn't like the one made with peanut cream, and muffin was whatever but I'm here reviewing the coffee:) the service was amazing, the girl that took my order was very nice.

Captain + Stoker is one of the premier coffee shops recommended by Yelp users, so I had to try it! The interior is cute and bicycle decorated, and there's tons of indoor seating with people crafting, working, and engaging in pleasant conversation. There's a long street bordering Captain + Stoker with lots of parking alongside it. It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Monterey, so I would highly recommend this for anyone coming from out of town who wants good coffee and something nearby the tourist attractions. The hot latte was yummy and frothy, I see why this location has the hype that it does.

Local coffee shop with beachy vibes and random bike decor. They have some seasonal drinks in addition to the standard menu. I also saw quite a few bottled juice selections which seemed pretty interesting. Got an iced coffee for $4 and an iced seasonal gingersnap latte for $6.75. Quality was good and the flavored lattes aren't too sweet! Staff are friendly and the hot drinks come out in cute custom cups.

Popped in here last Tuesday morning after yoga as it was across the street from the Monterey Gym. We found across the street parking and didn't have to wait too long for a table. I went for their croissant sandwich (forgot the name) but they gave me extra veggie instead of the ham. I love that avocado is everywhere in CA. The croissant was fluffy and buttery and delish! The matcha latte was more of a green tea latte. They use an organic blend by Rishi. So it's not a traditional ceremonial grade matcha. But it was fine. My husband liked his coffee and croissant sandwich as well. I liked the vibes of this place, not too touristy, beautiful decor. Good drinks and food. Perfect spot post workout!

We came by early on a Saturday before our whale watching tour. I found myself saying "if I ever owned a coffee shop, I'd want it to be just like this..." that's how much I loved this spot. Ok so we shared an avocado toast which was divine - super fresh avocado, the right amount of olive oil, flaky salt and red pepper flakes. Yummm! Then we also got a pastry and their special "peach be with you". I will say - as much as it was tasty - the thickness of the bread vs toppings just wasn't quite right. I won't ding stars though for my preference. Overall we just loved this spot and great to come by with a dog too!

Absolutely love Captain + Stoker! We had stayed in Monterey for a night and needed a pick me up before a long day, and thankfully found this spot. There was a line, but it was well worth the wait! The baristas were friendly and the atmosphere was so good. Stayed in to enjoy our lattes and pastries. We got iced vanilla lattes with macadamia milk, and arguably, it was the best latte we've had in a long while. Also got a couple of morning buns and an almond croissant. The pastries were elite. Great texture and flavors. Loved our visit so much that we snagged a tee and some beans. Can't wait to come back again and support an awesome cafe!

I am writing to report a serious and concerning incident involving a beverage I purchased today. Earlier today, I ordered a coffee and also purchased a pressed juice called "Recoverade." The coffee was fine, but I consumed the juice gradually throughout the day. When I reached about one-third of the bottle and attempted to drink the chia seeds at the bottom, I noticed the texture was unusually chunky and felt extremely strange--similar to shards. I immediately spat the contents back into the bottle and inspected it. Upon closer examination, I discovered what appear to be shards of glass inside the drink. This has caused me significant distress and concern for my safety, as I may have unknowingly consumed some of the contaminated product. This situation is extremely serious and poses a major health risk. I have a little cut in my lips I am requesting the following: An immediate investigation into this incident

My partner and I visited this open-to-air coffee shop after seeing it on Instagram reels. I ordered the avocado toast and an iced Captain's blend, and they ordered the banana and peanut butter toast, and an iced vanilla latte. Our coffees were yummy and our toasts were very fresh. Came here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The shop is super cute with lots of open space to get work done! We got an iced mocha and iced dirty chai on this trip, and were slightly underwhelming. The chai didn't quite taste like a traditional chai and the mocha lacked in flavor. Second time going to this coffee shop and will definitely be the last. Mainly because one of the staff members likes to talk down on people like they're stupid. Not all of us have the knowledge of a barista. Be more patient with customers if they don't understand the menu. Do better. The customer service ruined this place for me. read more

After posting about this coffee shop on Instagram stories, my most coffee loving friend (who also works at a coffee shop) immediately replied that she LOVED Captain + Stoker. I knew I was in for a treat. I ordered an iced mocha and a slice of avocado toast, and my boyfriend got a vanilla latte and a slice of their PB and Banana toast with honey. Everything was super fresh, super well made, and the giant wood table meant that everyone had a place to sit. I was really glad there was fast wifi and I loved the bicycle theme! Will definitely be back for more coffee and toasts! I'm honestly tempted to drive back to Monterey from SoCal just to go back to this place. read more

I went to Captain+Stoker while working in Monterey based on a open coffee shops besides Starbucks. I decided to give it a try and went in at 6:30am. Once inside there were no menus available to see what they had. The only menu I saw available was the one in front of the cashier, who did no seem too happy to be there. Once it was my turn, I tried not to take too long as I did not want to hold the line of two other customers behind me. As I was trying to decide, the cashier asks me "what are you mumbling about?" Instead of responding rudely back to the cashier I informed that I was trying to decide. The cashier was very rude and not helpful. I ordered a pour over and found that they had forgotten and it was lukewarm when I immediately tasted it. They also had forgotten to give me my danish which I had ordered and once I brought it up to their attention, the cashier just put it in a bag and did not even offer to warm it. I believe in customer service and this place has lost my business. read more

This was a very cool AM stop the other day. Fresh air, indoor outdoor element in what looks to be a converted service station or auto service place. It took awhile to get the order but it was for ten drinks so maybe that is alright...I was not overly impressed with the drip coffee but perhaps my taste buds were off due to the prior night's overindulgences. Cute coffee shop close to restaurants and downtown Monterey. We stop to get pastries at Paris Bakery Cafe and walked a couple blocks to get some coffee. I can see this place getting really crowded during the weekend because of the location, great drinks, and they serve food. I got their seasonal spring oat milk lavender honey matcha latte. It wasn't very sweet which was perfect for me. I could taste both the matcha and lavender, nicely complimenting each other nothing overly powering. My husband got the vanilla latte and mentioned that he would like to come back when we're in town. read more

It's hard to find decent coffee outside of Sacramento. We are spoiled...But this place is legit. The beans are high quality and roasted correctly, so you're getting fruit, acid, or mellow chocolate flavors depending on the type. The decor is cool and I'm sure the espresso drinks are fine too. But you truly know a good place from their coffee! read more

You know when a place is just trying too hard to be organic it becomes - overly organic? This is one of those places. You might get hit by something nice tasting but mostly it'll be the aforementioned -overly- organic blandness. Not sure if this is better alternative to Peets, Coffee Beans and Starbucks of the world but sure is more annoying. read more

I stopped into C+S Saturday the 5th right as they were closing, I was on a late drive out to BigSur and wanted to grab an Avagato. It was a few min after closing and after some clever banter I talked the barista into making me one (ok so I pulled the its my bday card!) but it actually was my birthday and they were more than happy to oblige. Oat milk latte was exactly what I had expected! I drove down to Monterey this past Saturday morning and stopped by Captain + Stoker before going through the aquarium. The casual and clean cafe was filled with customers by 10:30am, their garage style vicinity is on the corner of the block, walking distance to the wharf. As a home amateur barista, I love trying different beans from different roaster! The shop looked nice from the outside but the coffee and the service is otherwise I asked for a regular coffee and the batista looked irritated it tasted terrible it had lemony citrusy burned taste, I then asked my wife for her opinion and she said the same all in all don't try the coffee thankfully there was another shop around the corner with a much better and needed coffee taste and experience read more

Hands down the smoothest espresso I've ever had! They have it down to a science and the baristas are freakin MASTERS. As if I couldn't love this place enough, they always have a jar of treats for your dogs. That's always a plus in my book. I've been here multiple times and have not had a single bad experience. My favourite coffee spot in Monterey. My ONLY coffee spot in Monterey! I live in LA and if Monterey's not on a scheduled trip, on my annual trips from LA to Santa Cruz...and back...I'll stop here for coffee. Don't tell me that's ridiculous, I look forward to it every time! EXCELLENT espresso. The best affogatos. (So good I had two doubles in a row last time...four shots plus all that sugar...I felt like Beavis as Cornholio!) the line was sooo long but we got an iced vanilla latte and it was very yummy! coffee was not watered down at all and still very strong flavor profile! i saw that they had macadamia nut milk and that sounded sooo good ill definitely try that next when im in town! overall, great spot with solid coffee and a bit out of the way from all the commotion but i like that! read more

We were looking for some decent coffee on a Saturday morning and found this place on Yelp. We were able to find close parking on an adjacent street and walked over. The atmosphere and decor is great and the I loved the music they played. There was a bit of a line when we got there, but there wasn't a long wait for the staff to take our order. The staff was very friendly and gave us some good recommendations on our coffees and their baked goods. Our coffees were beautiful (see pic :), tasted great and the baked goods were awesome. Super cute coffee shop with delicious drinks! We stopped by and tried two of their lattes, the iced macadamia nut latte and iced vanilla oat latte. They were both great but I liked the vanilla latte more since it was creamier. My boyfriend enjoyed the macadamia nut latte more because the coffee was stronger. The service here was friendly too so we'll definitely be back! I heard some of their food options are also great so we'll try those next time! read more

Captain + Stoker’s journey began right here in Monterey in 2018, when owners Kelsea and Tyler took a leap of faith and transformed a closed coffee shop into a thriving hub for locals and visitors alike. With zero experience roasting or running a business, they learned everything from the ground up—pouring their hearts into every cup and building a space fueled by community, creativity, and care. Despite only ordering a cereal bowl, which requires minimal preparation, we had to wait for 20 minutes. What was even more frustrating was the staff's priority system. It was clear that the employees prioritized serving themselves over the customers. Staff members would order their food and receive it before us, even when they ordered after us. We ordered something simple, and it still took a long time to arrive. 20minutes for a cereal bowl, that's way too long for something that should be quick and easy. What really bothered me, though, was how the staff seemed to prioritize themselves over the customers. I watched them place their own orders and get their food before us, even when they ordered after. It just felt really unfair and unprofessional. C + S is by far my favorite local coffee shop! The coffee and hot chocolate are always delicious, and the latte art is beautiful - how they create flowers and hearts on top of a latte is amazing! I have enjoyed the seasonal drinks they've had over the last couple of months - so tasty! The staff are so friendly and really know how to care for their customers. COVID precautions are always followed, signs are up to show you how to line up, the floor is marked, everyone is masked up, and it is super clean. Very poor experience with the cashier who took our order. This place was very popular, so we were very excited to try it. But based on interactions with our cashier/barista we will not be patrons here again. The avocado toast and coffee were fine, but difficult to enjoy after the service we experienced.
