We came here to celebrate mine and my grandpa's birthday with the family. I ordered the fried catfish. The food wasn't the best in my opinion. The catfish was pretty bland and not very flavorful. And the rest of the food was just 'okay'. A few hours later, my stomach was unsettled after eating here and I also learned from my mom and sister that they also were having trouble with their stomachs after we left. Enjoyed our meal. Not much to say about this place but remind me of a mix between a Libby Hill and a Mayflower.

I truly have to say that there were two things about this place that I enjoyed: first, the company I was with that night and two: the water -- best thing I tasted all night. They serve it chock full of ice in a fresh glass every time -- though I would have preferred that they just use a water pitcher so the table wouldn't be congested with 9 water glasses simultaneously. I like a lot of ice in my drinks, but there should be some space left for beverage in the glass. The waiter was young and not too attentive, and the other waiters were busy mopping floors and running the vacuum cleaner. It was an hour before closing. The food focused on quantity rather than quality -- hushpuppies shaped like peppers. All fried food -- under fried -- dumped on top of fries. I noticed this place was packed right off the bat, that right there speaks volumes!!! Once seated, friendly waitress came over promptly and took my drink order. The menu has lots of choices and combo platters also. I chose the first mate with a little bit of variety....I also choose it broiled. We come here for the service and it's one of my favorites in town. I've been coming here since I was a kid. Within the last 2 years I have had nothing but good experiences with food and staff. Sometimes it's not the cleanest by the kitchen walkout into the hall (watch your step due to water sometimes) but it's not enough to leave less stars. They really try to keep up with orders and keep wait time downs along with cleaning. The staff always works hard when I'm there. Love you all! As far as the food, I love their newest item, the ribs. We were visiting for a wedding and were told by a hotel desk clerk that the food was greasy and not to eat there. A different hotel employee said she eats there all of the time and it was very good. She said if you want a smaller portion at double the price go further down the street to another seafood restaurant. We decided to give Captain Tom's a try and were glad we did. portions were oversized, prices were great and the pineapple/coconut cake was exceptional! Of course the food is mostly fried unless you ask for it to be cooked another way! I forgot to mention the "fried" hush puppies (how else can you cook hush puppies), they were elongated slightly sweet with onions and fried to perfection! The service was fantastic. ... Recently dined at Captain Tom's. Ordered the fried white fish dinner. Recalling that their portions are enormous, I ordered off the Senior Menu. Though it seemed to take quite a while to receive our entrees, all of our food arrived piping hot. I sampled the fried trout that someone else at my table ordered. It tasted exactly the same as my white fish. My friend, who's a frequent diner here, indicated that there is there is consistently no difference in taste among their fish selections. Perhaps the restaurant should investigate this. Anyway, the prices are fair and the service was pretty good, albeit slow to deliver the entrees. The server was very friendly, but slightly forgetful. We ended up canceling something after not receiving it for a long time because we had finished our meals. The server did not offer us dessert, and we didn't ask to see the dessert menu. We paid our bill at the register and left. I like that you can tip on the bill at the register if you want to do so using your credit card. My only recommendations for this restaurant are: --The tables are way too close together. They are hard even for a normal or small-sized person to walk between when no one is seated, and impossible when people are seated. I cannot imagine how larger people can navigate through many of the tables in the main dining area. --They need to get real butter and stop serving the community toxic hydrogenated margarine. This restaurant has been around long enough to be able to afford this upgrade. --They should consider adding greens to their iceberg lettuce salad. Not only is it healthier, but it will help offset the guilt of eating the fried dishes available on the menu. My husband and I were traveling home and stopped at Captain Tom's Martinsville location. The waitress, who was new, couldn't answer any of our questions about the food because she was "new". I ordered the fried scallops plates. Big mistake. The scallops were large and very uniformed. If you are familiar with scallops,you know that no two scallops are the same. When pulled apart, they split in a seamed grain, taste luscious and delicious. The scallops Captain Tom's served were choppy, tasteless, and tough. Captain Tom's Seafood is not a very baby friendly restaurant. We often eat here after church each Sunday.We usually have either our granddaughters or other children with us! Today the 18 month old I had with us actually needed a high chair. Yet to get seated in our preferred seating ( booth) we were forced to use a booster seat! So lunch was not enjoyable. The either use the cubby booth area , only on either end to seat you. Supposedly due to fire regulations!The other seating are is in the far corner of the rear of the restaurant. Capt. Toms is decent but nothing remarkable. When we ordered our salads some of the lettuce was wilted. Fish was cooked to order and good. The menu has 'heart healthy' items which is nice, not everyone wants everything fried. The waitress was very nice and came back to check on us often. The atmosphere here started off well. A time later after we got our food, some family members from out of town stopped in to speak before they headed back out. A friend of the family members dropped by to let her two kids seem them before they left back out. She decided her two kids and herself would eat. I had driven by this place numerous times and never ate there until tonight. Everything on the menu look good and all the food coming out from the kitchen looked amazing but I went with a choice of two entrees and got the scallops and catfish and they were both delicious. Plenty of food to fill me up and got a salad as well and it was good size. The only bad thing was my server seemed clueless about the menu in about the food but she was pretty young and she may have been new but really it wasn't a big deal.
