A few years ago they replaced the radiator in my minivan. The next day while driving to work a nasty noise started and smoke started coming out from the engine compartment. They didn't tighten the transmission hose connections. My newly rebuilt transmission was trashed. The BBB ruled against them. I have been coming here for 15 years and will no longer be a customer due to my latest experience. Looking at some other reviews, it seems like others have had similar experiences. Jeff has been here the whole time I have been bringing cars by and is always pleasant to work with. He will sometimes make suggestions fixing things yourself to save money, which I appreciate. However, I don't have a lot of confidence in the shop fixing any problems that I couldnt fix myself as a DIYer correctly. Major repairs seem to cost more than others in the area. Appointments seem to be more like a guideline than a time your car will actually go in, and I have learned that waiting with the vehicle will cost you your day. With all this in mind, I would recommend going elsewhere for service. Drafted two experiences below that come to mind: Latest issue: I scheduled an appointment for 11:00AM for safety and emissions. They don't get my car in until 12:30 and immediately tell me it will fail due to the horn not working. Fair enough, although I will add that the horn on this vehicle has never worked since I had owned it and this same shop had passed the vehicle 4 years ago.. but understand it is supposed to work for safety. Thinking fixing a horn on a Chevy couldnt cost more than $300 and take more than an hour-ish, I give the ok to diagnose it and fix it. 4 Hours later they charged me $600 for this horn. The horn worked after this service. One week later I lock the doors and don't hear the horn. Check the steering wheel button, no horn. I scheduled a 9:00AM appointment and take it back to have it fixed under the 12 month warranty. I get notified at the end of the day, it would stay overnight and that it would be parked under cover (I appreciate that), but think that with a morning appointment it should have been fixed that day. Luckily, I didnt need the vehicle that day, so I did not need to make arrangements to get a ride or rental car. The next day I get it and get charged another $50. A different part had failed that they had not fixed the first time. $50 alone is not an unreasonable amount of money; However, I am now $625 into this horn and have lost two full days. I also have minimal confidence it will make it another two years to the next inspection. If it breaks again, I am not taking it back out of fear it will somehow cost even more money. In a prior experience, I took an Acura in and they recommended a transmission fluid change. It had never been done before, so I went ahead and did it. After dumping the original fluid, they told me they don't have the right fluid to replace it with. They offered to order the correct fluid and in the mean time, replace it with a different fluid that they said was "within spec." I had mixed feelings about this. I appreciated the transparency because they could have filled the transmission with the other fluid and not said anything and I would likely have never known. But it also seemed incompetent to suggest doing the service if they did not have the right fluid to begin with. read more

I woke up and discovered a screw that was stuck in my tire this morning. Jeff was so warm and friendly when I arrived and then assured me he could have me moving within an hour. They let me know that I really needed new tires but I didn't feel pressured to get them right away. It ended up taking twenty minutes longer than Jeff originally quoted me so they ended up patching my tire for free! Totally unnecessary but so very kind. Absolutely turned my morning around! My son brought his vehicle to them to have the tires rotated, a tire patched and an oil change. My son is young and doesn't know much about cars. I will admit he should have maintained his vehicle better, but JEFF was the absolute rudest/belittling person I've encountered! The repairs came up with $3,000 & when my son said he couldn't do it right now. JEFF talked to him like he was an idiot...very condescending. He said "Well, if you want to keep this vehicle you have to do these repairs today!" Then said "Well (son's name), we have a CREDIT CARD you could get...HOW'S YOUR CREDIT?!" There is NO REASON to treat a customer like this, especially when my son didn't say he wasn't going to do the repairs, he just couldn't afford it today! Went here for an emissions, they were fast and efficient. Great at their job, but I was greeted by someone at the front counter. He seemed friendly at first, but I do not appreciate trying to be unsold on any products or items for my vehicle. Also, any comments about your personal appearance or smiling because he said "oh we have so much fun here". Inappropriate comments made just because I am a woman is COMPLETELY not okay. Took my car in to have a sleeve welded in the exhaust; I already have a mechanic but he's not set up to weld. They came at me with a list of repairs needed and said the exhaust would fall apart if they tried welding; it needed to be replaced. I told them I'm not putting $1500 into a 99 car with 200K miles; it isn't worth that. Jeff said "sure it is!" I said I'm not doing it so picked it up. He offered to buy my car for $500. I strongly advise anyone to avoid this location specially for a major repair, took the car in for a check engine light issue in January 2021, the diagnostic was it needed a tune-up and a cat converter replacement, even though the tune-up was ok , the cat converter they put in failed after 2000 + miles. read more

Pleasantly surprised with my visit here. They were very helpful on the phone when I made my appointment and when I arrived today for a emissions and safety inspection, they were very courteous and honest. It took them about an hour to do the inspection and then brought me back to tell me about the maintenance they recommended on my transmission fluid and air filters. The thing I appreciated the most about them is that they checked to see if I wanted to get these things done today (which I didn't--wanted to wait a bit longer and compare prices elsewhere) instead of just charging ahead and trying to pressure me into getting it done NOW. I've had a bad experience with Jiffy Lube where they pressure me into *having* to get the best oil for the oil change and *needing* to get things fixed pronto, but Car-X was much more laidback yet sincere/honest. And it was pretty awesome that they're doing free safety inspections (still charge for emissions inspection). I'll be back here again for other car maintenance! read more

Do not go to Car-X in Ballwin for tires. They damaged all 4 of the rims on my 2017 Dodge Ram 2500, and would not admit to it. When I say "damaged," I don't mean a couple of small scuffs. I am talking about deep gouges and scratches all the way through the paint to the primer and circling most of the perimeter of each rim. (The below photos -- taken immediately after they installed the new tires -- show sections from different rims.) Daniel Keown, the "10 year technician who admits to all of his mistakes" blatantly lied, claiming he didn't do it. Jeff Rickermann, the District Sales manager, seemed empathetic (he knew exactly what happened), but was powerless to make it right, and pushed me quickly off to his boss in corporate who he says will call me. I seriously regret choosing them, and would strongly advise you to go to a tire center that has better equipment, more honest staff, and with an onsite manager empowered to make things right. I am confident I will get my money out of them, but "doing the right thing" shouldn't be a battle. Nothing I hate more than a liar. I will update this review to let you know how much effort it took to bring them to the table to pay for the necessary repairs/replacement. read more

While Jeff is a nice guy, I had them order a part for me. It took 4 weeks of me calling them to remind them to check on my part. 5 weeks later, they finally got the part (sent to the wrong location to begin with, apparently they didn't check). I told them when I dropped off my vehicle that I thought my issue may not be the part they were replacing (the blower motor). They placed the motor and I get my vehicle back ($250 less in my pocket) with the same issue as I started with and absolutely no warning that it hadn't fixed the issue. They were a little cheaper, but it's not worth it if I have to remind them to do their job and then they replace the wrong part, but don't tell me they didn't accomplish anything. I'm not giving them more of my money. Going somewhere that will get the job done and communicate. read more

I really like the service here. Jeff is very helpful, he explains everything and I find him to be an honest mechanic, he also seems genuinely concerned for his clients/customers. I've had new tires put on from this CarX and also had a transmission and power steering flush done, I think their prices are reasonable as well, they have discounts and perks, for example every time I need a rotation they do it for free since I bought tires from there. They keep track of it so I don't have to, which is nice. Oil changes are very reasonably priced as well. I will continue to use their services in the future. Horrible service. Over-priced. Take it from someone who knows how they do business. The pipes are not OEM spec. They are cheap Chinese aftermarket and worse quality than the original exhaust systems. The brakes with the "Lifetime" warranty are just that. They cover the pad. And the pad comes for free in that caliper they recommended you buy. So, they cover only what they didn't have to pay for anyway. Steer clear. Find a good private mechanic you can trust. Brex owns most every one of the Car-X stores in STL. Stay away. read more

It is very difficult to find a consistent mechanic, and one you can trust. We have been taking two cars to Scott and his team for over four years now and we swear by no others. If they can fix it, they do; if they can't, they don't blow smoke but rather recommend you somewhere else to get the job done. To be clear, the latter is very rare. And when it comes to evaluating your vehicle, to confirm what other posts have stated, they give it to you straight. If something needs fixed sooner rather than later, they recommend it; if it can wait, they let you know too. Major rip off. I needed a basic spot weld and they quoted me 87 bucks and said it would take 45 minutes. I knew that was an unreasonable price so I drove right down the road to Midas and they did it for 52 bucks and it was done in 15 minutes. CarX is a rip off. I havebeen coming to this Car-X for years when i lived and worked in Ballwin. But my experience last week is the reason that I will not only continue to drive to see them, but will recommend them to anyone that I possibly can. I had been in there the week before to get an oil change on my Jeep and to get an oil change and new tires for my wife's Honda. They did a great job as usual. That afternoon, on my way home, my window on my jeep got off its track. Of course, I knew where to take it. On Monday November 21st, I stopped by in the morning. Scott Yankey (who is an amazing guy to work with, by the way) let me know that they would need to remove the door panel to see what was wrong. After it was removed, they informed me that they would need a part from the Jeep dealership, and it would be done in the late afternoon. I am a business banker, and I live in my car, essentially. I informed your team that there was no way I could be without my car that day because I had appointments to keep. Rather than put the door panel back on, and then charge me to remove it again when the part came in, Scott gave me the keys to his PERSONAL car for the day!!! Are you kidding me??? No one else would do this!!! Granted, I understand that he would not do this for just anyone that walks in, but there was NO reason that he had to do that. Thanks to him, I was able to keep working that day without interruption. When I returned, Will (who is also great and personable) informed me that he fixed it without having to use the dealer part saving me $100. All in all, I have NEVER received this kind of service anywhere else in any industry, much less a car repair shop. In the banking business we know, that if we don't service our clients the right way, there are plenty of other banks that will. I had a 1:00 p. m. appointment today for a simple state auto and emissions check and arrived 10 minutes early. I was told by Mgr. Jeff Rickermann that it would take an hour or so. I had no reason to doubt him because I had made the appointment with him early today. After ONE HOUR AND THIRTY MINUTES, during which they NEVER touched the car, I was told they should get to it in 15 minutes or so....and that it would still be at least another HOUR. I would give a zero review if I could. Total cons. They lie. Whatever they tell you that you need make sure you get a second opinion. We waisted a lot of money here before we realized who they really are . We fell for the credit card and so many months same as cash. The last time we took our car in they quoted $1200 worth of work, we finally wised up took our car to someone we trusted, cost us $98 dollars. Totally not worth 12 months same as cash. I decided to take my car here to get new brake pads based on the good reviews on Yelp. The owner John was very pleasant and personable. Before charging me he pulled my car in the garage to inspect my breaks at no cost. I expected this would be when he comes back trying to up sell me but quiet the opposite. He assured me that my brake pads were perfectly fine and recommended just cleaning the rotors to correct the squeaking. I'm not very mechanically inclined so John took the time to bring me in the shop to look at my pads an rotors and showed me what new brakes and rotors looked like and how mine compared. He also showed me what to look for in future wearing of the pads. I took his advice and cleaned my rotors and so far the squeaking has subsided. Very awesome to see an honest business man that takes pride in customer satisfaction. I went there for an oil change. They told me I needed new struts & shocks. I thought, that's weird - they told my daughter the SAME thing! We have both had our vehicles inspected and we do NOT need struts or shocks. I guess it works for some people and they get a big (expensive) job out of it! They are scammers, stay away!
