I think I've been to another store in the Cardenas chain years ago. My long ago impression was an interesting market with some nice produce, and a startling range products from Mexican, American, and for some reason Asian products. That hasn't changed. I got all excited when I saw the spices in the store. Lots of items that I've never seen in other supermarkets. Items that are scarce to none even in specialty markets, Cardenas stocks, almost casually. Once again, I like the produce section. It was reasonably fresh although I did spot a few tired items. The meat prices were reasonable for a supermarket, but I'm spoiled by Costco prices. Of course I could jam a large variety of meats and produce if I shopped here, but I've gotten used to managing Costco sized food items. Some of the Mexican spices were only available as a sauce. I looked up spices diligently using Google before concluding it was just not available in that particular section. So I wandered through the store two times until I found the sauce section which answered my needs profusely. Since I had gone shopping only yesterday and was stocked up on produce, I ended up purchasing many many spices. Just tried some of them and I'm all excited. I will have to dig up my Mexican cookbook and start working on some recipes. I also purchased some fried pig skin. Insanely heart, unhealthy, and yet keto. Funny, I used to get these as a kid in Chinatown and they were Asian brands, not Mexican. Lest I give you the wrong impression, this supermarket does not focus exclusively on Mexican products. It actually stocks many standard items. So if you're cooking Mexican/American, this is pretty much a one stop shop. Overall, this store was very neat and clean. The shelves were reasonably stocked, although I did notice some sale items were completely missing. I made a quick pass at the prepared and hot foods. Although I did not partake, I noticed the prices for the food were slightly more competitive with other low cost options. I was sorely tempted by the delicious odors, but I had just eaten lunch and this is a situation where my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Overall, I'd like this market and now that I've seen it in more depth I think this will replace Safeway as my alternative supermarket to Costco. read more

This Sunday morning, I went to Cardenas Market to buy a birria combo meal. When I ordered my combo, it was supposed to include an agua fresca, but I never received it. The combo was advertised at $12.99, but the employees insisted that the birria was not a combo, even though the sign clearly showed the birria for $11.99. Despite that, they still charged me an extra dollar. I know it's not a lot of money, but please be very careful because they overcharge customers, and that is essentially theft. I came here today July 8 2026 around 630pm and it just happened as i was paying on self checkout witch I always use snd totally know how to use, (i use them all the time) so the screen had like a twitch and some skinny girl comes over and almost runs me over if id didn't get out the way fast enough and I lost sight of my groceries for a second while she typed her code or whatever to unlock the screen and im really unsecured about my food and my god forgive me if im wrong but I suspect my food may had been quickly tampered with as she fixed the screen and its a horrible feeling having to consume my food now, so my advice uf this happens to anyone else stay close ti your food never take your eyes off of it ir simple grab it telm that employee go keep her distance and move on to a different checkout machine, weird drama going on now a days, stay safe anc God bless!! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. My mother went to Cardenas Market to exchange her coins for cash using the Coinstar machine inside the store. She forgot to redeem her ticket that same day and came back the next morning. When she tried to redeem it, the employees told her the ticket was invalid. We immediately called Coinstar directly, and they confirmed the ticket was absolutely valid. The issue was Cardenas Market refusing to honor it. After being passed around by employees, my mother was finally directed to the head manager and that's where this situation went from frustrating to disgraceful. The head manager was completely disrespectful, screaming at my mom, raising her voice, and showing zero professionalism. Instead of helping resolve a simple matter, the head manager treated my mother like she was a burden. No customer should ever be disrespected like that, especially a mother! The head manager made the situation humiliating and hostile to the point where my mother felt like giving up. It wasn't until I personally stepped in, demanding in a professional but firm manner, that my mother finally got her money. The fact that it took this much effort for a customer to receive what was rightfully hers is unacceptable. Cardenas Market should seriously question why this head manager is representing their store. Someone who screams at customers and refuses to handle even the most basic issues should not be in a leadership role. The head manager here clearly needs anger management training, customer service retraining and a reality check on how to treat paying customers. If you're planning to use the Coinstar machine at this location, redeem your ticket immediately the same day because if you have to deal with this head manager, prepare for a nightmare. read more

Cardenas Market -- please, for the love of God, start checking your stock regularly. This is now the third time I've gone grocery shopping here (because it's the closest store to my home), and I've had to pull expired items out of my basket. Not one, but TWO things this time. My husband told me to just leave them on the shelf when I got to checkout, but I said no I wanted to let the employee know so they could take care of it. And mam ... why did the cashier look at me and say, "Pues ni modo, qué quieres que haga?" and then toss it straight into the trash under the register?? Like... what? Also, since when do y'all not accept WIC? The same cashier told me, "We're not accepting that right now because something's wrong with the system." No sign, no explanation, nothing. I'm honestly tired of shopping here. That was the last straw, so I'm leaving this review and taking my business somewhere else. This is unacceptable and honestly gross. Since my last visit things have changed. Customer service has improved and I feel more confident coming to shop here over the local grocery stores. The female butcher is my go to person. All of the butchers are good but she seems to understand what I'm looking for. The produce if very fresh and I love the tortillas and pan Dulce. I'm coming back to shop. I came in because you were open early one day on my way into work and I needed to pick up something for my students. I'm glad I did. And I'm glad things have gotten better. read more

Cardenas is great for meat and produce. The food line is horrible and could be better with customer service. The people working the food lines could be nicer. Tamales are good. First and last time I ever purchase from this bakery! I purchased 2 of the long rectangular cakes today from the bakery one chocolate it had oreo cookies and strawberries on top the other white with strawberries and peach slices on top. I asked the lady behind the counter " when were these cakes made?" And she just looked at me... I asked again "Were they made today?" After a few seconds she replied "yes" The cake only had 3 strawberries on top so I asked if they could put more strawberries on top and to charge me extra. The lady that was helping me turned around and asked the other lady that was there frosting a cake about extra strawberries... she rudely replied "No!" I said I'll pay extra. She said "that's the design of the cake". I said ok. I told the lady that was helping me "I would like a cake with strawberries in the filling" so she pointed out the cakes that supposedly had strawberries in the filling. I picked out the 2 cakes and asked again just to confirm if they had strawberries in the filling and she " yes they have strawberries". Both cakes were very dry and they did not have strawberries in the filling they had a thick nasty frosting as filling it must of been over an inch thick. No one in my family liked the cakes not the adults not the kids it ended up in the garbage. The cake tasted old and nasty. NOT FRESH AT ALL! And she lied about the strawberry filling. Went in for the first time recently to buy things for a bbq dinner. They have a minimal variety of goods. The store has an empty dark feel and had homeless people hanging out in the entrance. Not sure why everyone seems to be leaving some pretty poor reviews here at Las Cardenas Market in San Rafael. So far my experience here has been pretty good. I was looking for a taco catering package and doing some comparison with restaurants and found that Las Cardenas Market really has a pretty good deal. For under $200 we got a Taquiza package which included a ton of food. I went a few days before to place the order prior to pick up. The $189 package was enough for 25 people. It had 2 packs of corn tortillas, 2lbs freshly made tortilla chips, red salsa, green salsa, tray of rice and beans, tray of protein of your choice (you can choose 1 or 2) we picked Carne Asada and Pollo. Grilled Peppers, chopped onions and cilantro. Pick up at 9am (my request) was pretty good and everything was packed and placed on heated area waiting for my pick up. Of course the salsa, chips etc was placed elsewhere because salsa probably shouldn't be heated like that at all. Very pleased about this package and the service. I most recently had a really bad review here. I emailed the company, but there was no response. So I'm just going to post the email I sent. I just left your Vallejo location, I placed an order for Togo food. I waited in line, and Maria was preparing another order.  I guy walks up and waits behind me. She says something in Spanish, I thought she was talking to me so I told her I would like chilaquiles, she wasn't. She then asked the man what kind of meat he wanted. She starts working on his food. I'm surprised because I was next. She starts working on my chilaquiles. When it's time to pay, a cashier comes, and she can not find the chilaquiles item to charge me....she is looking for around 3 minutes.  Then she says that will be $10.....the screen doesn't say chilaquiles, it's says Plata, and I don't understand the last part. So I asked why it was $10 when the sign above me said $6.99. Maria, the lady cooking says if u want eggs, u pay more. But the picture on the menu shows eggs. And I say that, I have gotten this dish before from Cardenas so that's why I was so surprised.  Maria says if u want it, that is what it is. I was so confused because I had never paid for eggs before. It's in the advertised photo. She jesters me to move.  She goes to the back and gets a supervisor #9011. She finds the correct button, and it's $6.99. As I'm standing there, I'm thinking how a place of business can charge you what they want to charge you, that has to be illegal. The man waiting next to me says, "That's crazy."  I start to cry cause I don't understand why someone would be so mean, rude, and unprofessional. Im a paying customer who always comes here for breakfast. I was just there yesterday getting a breakfast burrito that she also made. I order and pick up food once a week for the office. I knew when I was told to order from Cardenas I would need to do so in person. I unfortunately do not speak Spanish. I stood in line at the deli and I had the taco platter I wanted to order up on my phone. The nice woman didn't speak English and went to the phone and called someone one. I waited 15 minutes and when no one showed up I called the number that is listed in the company responses here on Yelp. I got a recording and left a voicemail asking for help ordering because I don't speak Spanish. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. I finally found someone who spoke English and he was very helpful. My order was ready when I arrived the next day. I was not offered help out and it was a large order (over $300). I placed everything in my trunk just in case and lo and behold the beans leaked out all over my trunk. I did not eat any of the food, so I can't speak on that. She spoke to her coworker in Spanish instead of talking to me. I'm a delivery driver and it was nearly impossible to communicate. Is anything made in house anymore? Got some refried beans and they are legit right out of a rosarita can - disgusting. Same with the salsa; I thought by getting it behind the counter it would be fresh, but it's the same shit as the packaged salsa. Which is super misleading cause the pre packaged salsas list all the preservatives, but the behind the counter ones print a label without all that- but it's the SAME salsa. If I was desperate I would have went to my local grocery, not an authentic market. Or maybe Cardenas is mainstream and I don't even know it lol. read more

I feel like I am on holiday in this Mexican market. They have produce a prepared food section, salsa bar, beautiful meat section and their produce is fresh and inexpensive. There is a bakery and they make fresh chips. They have piñatas hanging from the ceiling which make it very festive. We will be back! read more

I really only come to this store for a few items so my shopping trips aren't long. I do think the service in the prepared foods section leaves alot to be desired so I havent gotten tacos/burritos etc since it's changed into Cardenas. I recommend going earlier in the morning if you can because they will have lines to the back of the store and still only have two cashiers. They do offer self-check out but at least one of those machines is down every time that I go and that line can get long too. The biggest complaint I have about this store is that you have to pay extra attention to the expiration dates. I have seen expired salsa so many times (the Cardenas brand) so be sure to check. The prices are good on produce but certain things always look old. I know that there are nation-wide food chain issues but other local grocery stores still have fresher options. Grocery bags here are also 5 cents higher than the other grocery stores in town. read more
