Although I was underwhelmed, by their Boston Creme their Old fashioned is definitely the way to go. I can see why this is their best seller. The Boston creme here lacked the umph I was looking for when I had a sweet tooth craving for a sweet treat and need it to hit the spot. BUT the Old fashioned does not disappoint. I specifically asked what was their best seller and they unequivocally said the "Old fashioned" so I listened and will keep getting that until I find another go to donut. It tastes similar to a glazed pound cake, soft of the inside crisp and sweet on the outside. Their chai latte is also very good. One suggestion I would have is for them to add cinnamon, nutmeg, and similar spices to add to the coffee or tea selections like what Starbucks has. What is super cute and unique about Cardigans is their pretty display, cool decor, chic style, lounge area with greeting cards and Minnesota memorabilia. A recently established donut shop at City Center sky level is open from 6:30am and a great place to satisfy your sweet cravings. In the morning, they have pretty much all the selections available. I love their french cruller. Old fashion, was moist and good but a little too sweet for me. They have daily specials and my favorite is strawberry champagne. If you are not buying many pieces, they will use a paper bag. But I recommend to bring your own tapperware or something, because their donuts tend to break apart or smushed. Workers are very friendly and helpful. I love coming here and get nice fresh donuts for my coworkers. read more

Disclaimer: this is a retroactive post, so be considerate of the unreliability of memory. Cardigan Donuts is located in a downtown building that has other restaurants and shopping stores. Despite being downtown, their space is pretty big and comfortable. There were long tables and smaller tables for patrons to sit at. The interior design was warm, modern, and homey. It's downtown, so basically street or ramp parking. COVID Precautions: Staff and patrons all had to wear masks. Food was served with disposable utensils (ie, paper plates). There was hand sanitizer accessible, as well as packets of disposable wipes for patrons to use. Tables were arranged to allow for as much social distancing as possible. October 2020: We went after lunch downtown, so it wasn't super busy. The unique aspect of Cardigan Donuts is their "Donut Schedule," which is a menus of various flavors of donuts that are only available for less than a week. This differs from a seasonal menu because not all the donut flavors are brought back, nor do we know when they will be back on the schedule. We tried out several items: - Coffee: they gave us free coffee with our donut purchase! I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so I can't really describe it. It just tasted like regular black coffee. - Jasmine Milk Tea Donut: One of their flavors on the Donut Schedule. It was very very good, and I still check the site occasionally to see when it ocmes back so I can get it again! The jasmine tea cream was delectable. It was very fragrant, yet not too sweet. It paired amazingly with the soft and flaky glazed donut. It was incredible, probably the best flavor of donut I have tried. It was subtle, yet addicting. The one thing I didn't like about this donut was the popping boba (too tart) topping, as I would have preferred regular boba instead. - Churro Roll: I did not like the chocolate sauce as it has a little spice in it. While we were aware that there would be pepper in the sauce, I didn't like how it tasted. It wasn't spicy, there was just a jarring feeling on the taste buds. The donut itself was yummy though, with the taste and consistency of an actual churro. I wouldn't get this flavor again, but it was a unique flavor to try! - Jam-Filled Premium Bismarck (Blueberry Lemon): Another flavor on the Donut Schedule. I was not a fan of this one though. The jam was a little too tart for my taste and it overpowered the sweeter accents of the jam. Because of the tartness of the jam, I felt that there was too much jam and not enough powdered donut to offset the tartness. I ended up scraping some jam out to enjoy the donut more. Overall, a nice donut place with fresh donuts and unique flavors. However, the flavors can be hit or miss. It also is a more expensive donut place ($5-9 depending on the type of donut, with the Donut Schedules being the most expensive), but it is a nice occasional treat. read more

Stopped into Cardigan before attending a conference and was shocked to see the line to order all the way out the door. Of course we knew this could only mean the donuts were heavenly, and we weren't let down. Even though the line was long, it was moving quickly so kudos to the staff! We just got a few donuts, the classic old fashioned and one bourbon apple fritter. The old fashioned donuts were exactly what you'd want, a bit thicker than your standard KK donut but the glaze was just too good! The bourbon apple fritter was also really good, I'm a purist at heart so it can't compete with the old fashioned... but it was very different (in a good way) from a standard apple fritter from anywhere else. We made the mistake of not getting enough, and didn't want to stand in line again... so pro tip, just order one or two extra. It'll be worth it! read more

I appreciate Cardigan Donuts for always making the skyway smell amazing! I have made bulk orders for my office a number of times, and they handle it all very well! You order a variety pack, but they have always been very considerate of my preferences. They also have a great rewards program for people making large orders for their office (or home). For every 10 dozen you order, you get one free. The rewards card also offers a free drink for every 10 ordered, although I have yet to try any of their drinks. When making large orders, they have always packaged them well for me to carry to my office. Pick up is a breeze even when the morning rush hits if you prepay by ordering online! I ordered these from Bite Squad yesterday, and I would walk miles to have them again. Heck, I wish I still worked in downtown so I could have a reason to wander here daily. It's just me, so on the first day I was good and had only one. It was a long john, filled with this light and airy vanilla cream I can only describe as addicting. Then, the toasted coconut on top provided a little crunch and a nutty island explosion. Wow. The dough itself was also airy, a nice bit of yeast flavor, ultimately the perfect way to transport all that crunchy, creamy goodness. I hesitantly closed that box, and I went about my day. Yet the other five treats called me me all day. I should have just given in, as the party pizza (gasp) and ice cream I tried to substitute them with only filled me with regret. Today, i woke up determined to eat better, but as you can see from the carnage of the box, my discipline quickly faced. Even a day old, and the glazes a bit softened, each was delicious. I walked past the backdoor of this place in a MN skyway on a super snowy day and thought I'll be good, no need for a donut. Then I looked them up on Yelp and realized they had yogurt and oatmeal bowls and convinced myself that was a healthier option I needed to try. This place is so cute! Super simple menu (you can get a bowl with various toppings or a donut, easy peasy), but lots of flavor combinations. The staff was nice and indulged all of my questions. They have a solid coffee, tea and kombucha offering too. They even sell small retail good like birthday card and chocolate bars (though I would pissed if I found out someone bought me a chocolate bar instead of a donut for my birthday.) Whenever I travel to a city, it's a necessity to find a place to get donuts. I always try to find "the best" one but because I don't actually live here, I have to rely on Yelp to help me out. My husband and I picked about a dozen and a half of these delicious doughs to enjoy with my family. The best by far was the old fashioned glazed donut. It has the perfect amount of fried but it's not overly saturated in oil. For some odd reason, this donut has a slight candy corn taste. And although I hate candy corn, I did not hate this donut. The blueberry cake donut was also yummy. It is not the best blueberry donut I've ever had but it was very good. The runner-ups would have to be the pecan/cream-filled donut and the apple fritter. If you want to die and go to heaven, throw that apple fritter in the microwave for 20 seconds before digging in. These aren't the best donuts I've ever had and I don't know if they're the best in Minneapolis...but they were pretty damn good and I would enjoy them again for sure. Dropped by after work right before the closed hoping to try their bacon donut, but I guess they're pretty popular because they only had a few donuts left over. I compromised with the Jam filled Bismarck. It was a strawberry rhubarb jam filling donut with lots of confectioners' sugar on top. The filling was pretty sour so the powdered sugar balanced it out, very fluffy donut! Super nice interior, the white and wood made it look super clean. I have been wanting to try Cardigan Donuts for over a year now, but as it's closed on weekends and I work nowhere near downtown, I have not had the opportunity. On a rare day off during the work week, I took advantage of my time and made my way to this adorable spot at City Center. The girl behind the counter offered up some recommendations and I took her up on the French Cruller and also grabbed a Fluffer Nutter. The French Cruller was still warm and it was melt in your mouth amazing. Some may say I'm prone to hyperbole, but this was seriously one of the best donuts I've ever had. The Fluffer Nutter had a delightful peanut butter cream in the middle and was top notch. The coffee was stout and fresh. The seating is plentiful and cheery, and there's also a little gift area to browse while you wait. Perhaps it's best I don't work close to downtown. I would probably be in there every day. read more

It's my mother in law's last day in the Twin Cities so we wanted to try something special. To that end, I ordered Cardigan Donuts since I'd read so many great things about them. They definitely didn't disappoint. Everything we tried was great. I was really impressed with the maple bacon oatmeal with dried cherries. Picked up an assorted dozen for the office! They not only looked great but they were fresh, delicious, and not overly sweet. A friendly worker brought them right out to my car as soon as I made the call that I had arrived in front of the City Center Marriott. Oh the let down! I was so excited by the descriptions of the donuts but my dreams were dashed after the first couple bites. I opted for the churro roll and a seasonal blueberry lemon cruller. The dipping sauce for the churro roll was too heavy and thick to really dip the donut in, I imagine it would be akin to eating cinnamon paste, bleh. Crullers and blueberry donuts are my absolute two favorites; so the blueberry lemon would be the best of both worlds. But alas, you couldn't quite distinguish the flavor of either fruit and the texture was heavier than I most love about that type of donut. 2 stars are for the unique flavors that go beyond just super sugary icings and a mount of toppings. But looking forward to making it back and seeing some of the execution misses improved upon. read more

The rating is based on the 2 donuts I purchased. I just wasnt a fan of these 2 particular flavors. First, the actual donut(s) itself was really good. Fresh and classic tasting. It was the toppings/flavorings that were disappointing. I got the raspberry lemon bar and a peanut butter bar of some sort. Actually, the peanut butter one wasnt too bad. It came with dollops of 2 different flavors. I actually cant recall if there was some sort of cream in it. That's how memorable it was. Now, the raspberry lemon bar had a great raspberry filling. Then you get to the "lemon". Not actually sure what this was. Very artificial tasting. Kind of ruined the donut. I would definitely go back, because I love donuts. How have I not already reviewed Cardigan Donuts?! This is one of the best donut options we have in the city. The biggest issue, for me, is the location. Cardigan is in the Skyway system of downtown Minneapolis which is great if you happen to work in one of the connected buildings, but for me it just means that finding street parking is a pain OR paying for parking is expensive. However, even with the annoyance of their location, I've still driven down there specifically for their donuts. I've dragged my dad, my friends, and gone on lone missions for their donuts. They are great. The old-fashioned are in my top five old-fashioned donuts. They have a great crust with a heavy-handed glaze on top. I was in downtown MSP to drop off some stuff at UPS and stumbled upon Bogart, I have been wanting to try their donuts for so long but since I am not in the area very often, I haven't found the chance to. It was 50% off when I was there, probably due to the late time in the afternoon. I got two donuts the original and I think coconut? I couldn't remember exactly. But they are very average, it's very dense and thick, unlike the light and fluffy Krispy Kreme donuts I normally love. It was soft and messy and sugary sweet without crossing that line into being saccharine that so many chains do (looking at YOU Krispy Kreme). The cake donut was where we lost a star. The chocolate frosting was good but nothing to write home about and the cake donut itself was super dry. A good cake donut with a chocolate frosting will complement each other but the dryness of the cake and the mediocre chocolate just didn't do it for me. Located inside the City Center Skyway, a location likely known to Minnesotans looking to avoid frigid Winter weather but not entirely obvious from the address on Google Maps, it was as part of a search for The Twin Cities best Donut that Monday led to Cardigan, the shop now open for just over a year found largely empty save for employees though a few professionally dressed folks en route to the office did stop by from time to time. Opened in May 2017 by Justin Bedford and Jeff Bull, two downtown denizens who tapped the skills of baker Daniel Rosene to create recipes focused on classics it is on the right side of a substantial space that guests will find rows of Fried Dough, the additional offering of Greek Yogurt and Oatmeal topped to order an interesting addition as is a collection of locally produced goods lining the opposite wall. Somewhat stark in terms of decor besides the aforementioned, a situation probably less noticeable when the place is more busy and the only focus is not overhead Pop Radio, it was after surveying the day's line-up that six items were selected, a free cup of Coffee from Black Eye Roasting Co. showing well with good body and Caramel notes that paired well to first bites of an Old Fashioned that was sloppily glazed and far less impressive than that at The Bachelor Farmer Café, though admittedly over $1 less expensive. Moving next to a Cruller, good amounts of Egg appropriately still tasted throughout its wispy interior, it was next with a crumbly Cake Donut topped in Coffee Frosting that Cardigan stumbled, some reprieve found amidst a Fritter described as "Bourbon Apple" though a dearth of Fruit rendered the center somewhat dull in comparison to a crisp and sugary exterior. Rounding out the morning with two of the more expensive "Inspired" options, a Bismark stuffed with rich housemade Custard and topped with a candied Orchid Blossom easily Cardigan Donut's best option on this day, it was finally with Lemon Meringue that curiosity was satisfied, a poor piping job seeing only perhaps half the Longjohn actually filled with Lemon Curd and telling once again of a place that doesn't pay attention to small details despite premium pricing. read more

I was visiting from out of town and this space was across the street from my hotel. Not to visitor, this place is inside the building in the hallway walk-through space upstairs. You have to go inside this door next to the hotel and then go up the elevator. I have no clue where you would park as I came here on foot. Now on to the donuts. They are beautiful but some of the flavor combinations need a bit of work. I got 2 specialty flavors and one normal flavor. The normal donut was good but not great. Great open space layout and very friendly staff. I didn't realize it was upstairs inside the mall, so it was a bit hard to find and we passed right by the mall entrance at first. I'm not a local to the area, so other people might know better. Their yogurt and oatmeal bowls are amazing, with many different topping flavors to choose from. I had the baked apple bowl and it was very good! Not too sweet, and the small donut hole was a fun touch! The french cruller was also good, but I'm not sure I would pick it personally. The hype is real, ya'll! Due to my work schedule, it's quite difficult for me to get to downtown on a weekday. It tasted just like Krispy Kreme (sorry you Krispy Kreme haters). Their dough is super soft, airy and fluffy (if you've had Krispy Kreme before, you know what I'm talking about, and it's a good thing!!!!). Second favorite was the apple fritter. Big fan of anything apple + cinnamon. The rest of the donuts were pretty good as well. What I like about their donuts besides their texture is that they are not overly sweet like some other donut shops.
