Len's favorite grilled cheese and french fries
    David M.

I've been eating at this place for several years but I used to go with my friend Len. He introduced me to it even though he doesn't eat BBQ! He always would get French fries and a grilled cheese. Well the ribs are really good and the fries are outstanding. Sadly, my friend Len has passed away. I will always think of him when I eat at Carlile's.

I came here for lunch recently. Mainly in part due to me not wanting to driving anywhere far. I also remembered that Carlile's BBQ has a pretty good burger and it had been awhile since I ate here. I ordered one of their ten combos available; I was amazed at the number of options available! I went with the #2 (Fresh Ground Chuck Cheeseburger w/t no mayo) which came with two sides for $8.29 plus tax. Yes, you read that right!!! $8.29 for this meal! I had sweet tea to drink, so that made the price increase. The burger is well made and the toppings (lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles ) all were fresh. I had to take some of the onions off because there were just too, too many! I also requested extra pickles. The french fries were fresh , not frozen. I didn't care for the baked beans since they were mushy to me. I definitely think the portion sizes were well worth the price! I really liked the two different sauces available on the table . One is vinegar based and the other is not... both tasty! The service for the most part was good but some parts were annoying. This is an older restaurant so it has that feel to it and the floors were extremely greasy to me!! Ewwww Whether you are craving a burger , bbq , meat and 3, etc. Carlile's has a solid menu and offers a down home experience.

BBQ pork, turnip greens, mac&cheese, fried pickle

I was brought here by a local and if it was not for him, I would never have found the place nor visited. It's a local's favorite for a reason, great, tasty, BBQ at an affordable price. As I got out of my truck, I knew that it would be a great place because the scent of wood burning permeated...hmmm, wood fired fueled BBQ, oh yeah. The décor is old school, from the 1970s maybe, but don't be fooled because it adds to the reality ambiance of the place - you go for the BBQ and it does not disappoint. As soon as we sat, our server stopped by to take our drink orders. Sweet tea please - along with the tea came some fried pickles and white sauce. Great contrast in flavors - the sourness of the fried pickles with the white sauce (goes great with chicken). I ordered the pork BBQ plate with sides of mac&cheese, turnip greens. The pork BBQ is slathered with vinegar-based sauce, I do not think that it's needed because the BBQ is moist and flavored enough. The mac&cheese (considered a vegetable in the South) was okay, the greens can be flavored a bit more, but the BBQ was great. A bit out of the way from downtown Birmingham and easily missed if not looking for it, Carlile's BBQ is a local favorite. Among the diners were men in coat and ties, ladies in dresses, as well as construction crews...and tourists like me! My next visit to Birmingham will include another visit so that I can try some other BBQ, with the sauce on the side.

    Pork Sandwich

Stopped for lunch during the week because it was close. I love trying local BBQ. I wanted to sample a few items to see how they were. The Rib Sandwich came up way short. These were not the kind of ribs that work on a sandwich, the meat did not want to come off the bone. Fatty and not good flavor, I was not impressed. The Pork Sandwich was decent. I felt it could have used a little more smoke flavor. Plenty of meat and the bun was soft. The staff was very friendly and they had great customer service. The BBQ came up short on flavor and quality.

What more do you need to know?…read more We have been wanting to try this food truck for awhile as we have heard good things, but they are a little hard to find as they don't have a regular operating schedule as a food truck. Finally found them in a neighborhood market pop-up a couple of days ago...sweet! Ordered pork, ribs, and, of course, brisket. Also got their potato salad, cole slaw, and baked beans. They also added in some of their sausages for us to try as well. Here is a tip - if you want brisket, go early. I got the last of their brisket and the pop-up market was only halfway through! Took everything home and we had a FANTASTIC dinner. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was good! It's crazy!! Party of 6 in our group and everyone loved it! Everyone had different favorites, but all agree everything was excellent. Going to have to hunt down that food truck again soon!

I have worn the same Pepsi hat to every restaurant, gas station, casino, gift shop, and livestock auction from Missouri to Montana. It's basically my formal wear. So naturally, when I saw a place called Eugene's, I nearly drove into the parking lot before I finished reading the sign. The young man taking my order immediately complimented my Pepsi hat. Folks, that bought more goodwill than any rewards program ever could. I told him I've worn this hat across 47 states and through three separate back injuries. He nodded like he understood the responsibility. I ordered the hot chicken. Now listen. I love chicken. I don't mean normal people love chicken. I mean if chicken ever ran for president, I'd volunteer for the campaign. This chicken was good. Real good. Crispy, juicy, enough heat to remind me I'm alive but not enough to make me start seeing old ex-boyfriends. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because I built it up too much in my head. A restaurant named Eugene's serving chicken to a man named Eugene? That's a lot of pressure for one meal. Cooked to perfect and it was coming off the bone with my fork. The cornbread was phenomenal. I usually don't like cornbread because it can be dry but let me tell you, Rodney's was far from it. And good thing I did! I looked at the menu and honestly wanted to order everything cause it all sounds good. I don't eat much so I went with the two piece chicken tenders kids meal. The lady who took my order said they have a regular chicken tenders meal but I said I wanted the kids meal cause I don't eat a lot. She then said "It's the same amount of food." which, ok cool, but I don't think that should be said cause they can lose out on money. Just my opinion. And FYI, I very often get kids meals cause I really don't eat a lot. Not trying to save money or anything. The meal came with two chicken tenders, sauce, fries and a drink. Fries were good. Nothing to complain about. Those tenders tho.....YUM!!! So much flavor. And the ranch I got with it....yes! Not sure when I'll be in Birmingham again but I will 100% go back and try other items!

A menu board sitting in front of the truck had their menu for today. They had BBQ pork sandwiches, pork plates, rib plates, bbq nachos, wings, roasted corn, bbq beans, pineapple lemonade, and more. The service here was fast and friendly. The prices are about what you would expect for bbq. I got the bbq pork sandwich for $9, the rib plate with two sides -roasted corn and beans- for $18, and a pineapple lemonade for $4. Two people for $36. The amount of food you get is very generous. The bbq pork sandwich was pretty basic, just pork and sauce, but it was huge. Pork and sauce poured over the bun to fill the biggest portion of the to go plate. The meat was tender and juicy and is somewhere between pulled and chopped. The bbq sauce isn't overly sweet and has a spicy kick. It's not a hot sauce but if you are sensitive to heat, you may want to choose something else. There is a bit of after burn. My mom couldn't eat it due to an extreme aversion to spice but I had it later for dinner and I enjoyed it very much. The real star for me was the rib plate. These ribs were huge, tender, and moist, with just enough bite to keep them from falling off the bone. They are rubbed with spices and you have the option of bbq sauce, which I got. Get plenty of napkins because you will need them. These are some of the best ribs I've had in a while. I wanted to suck the bones. My sides were roasted corn and baked beans. Both of these had a little kick of heat to them, so once again, if you can't stand spice look out. Both side items were delicious. Let's talk about the pineapple lemonade. When I saw it was $4, I almost skipped it, but am I ever glad I didn't! This lemonade is so refreshing, sweet, and smooth I could have happily finished off a gallon or more. It's very sweet and there is little tang. It was so worth it. If you see this truck, get over there quick, you don't want to miss out.
