My husband is generous tipper & in the 45 yrs we've been together I've only seen one time he was upset enough not to leave a tip. Tonight was #2. The service was deplorable. I had to leave our table & walk up to a group of 4 Carlos employees to ask if someone would please come and wait on us. (it was a hot day & we asked for water which was never brought to us) When we did finally place our order the food was passable at best. Date night out usually consists of heading down to Carlos' with their large Margaritas and incredible taco salads or nachos. Just moved to Winston and was unpacking boxes, got hungry, and ordered some takeout from this place. OH MY GOODNESS! It's AMAZING!!! No kidding it's excellent food. They have the best salsa. Their chili verde is to die for. The carnitas are wonderful. I pretty much order takeout from here at least once a week...and now I need a membership from Pacific Fitness so I can continue this habit. Seriously, they're the best. It hurts me to write a negative review of Carlos'....it has always been a "go to" place for good food and drinks. I'm hoping my experience yesterday was a fluke so I gave three stars instead of lower and that the restaurant manager sees this review and makes corrections.Firstly, the service was so slow. This was acceptable to us because we know many places are short staffed. What really was disappointing was the food and drinks. I'll start with the food; Luke warm. There were 4 of us, all ordering something different. A couple of us thought the food and/or sauce was tasteless. Now, the drinks; I always enjoy a Mojito there but I couldn't drink mine. It was like mint-flavored water. I'm sure the soda water used was completely flat. We returned the drink and I ordered a basic vodka (Ketel One) and tonic. This time, the tonic was flat. The guys had Margaritas and the were fine. The fourth in our group had a virgin Mojito that had a bit more "fizz" than mine, but she ended up ordering a beer. We weren't even comped on the returned drink and the total bill with tip was well over $100. It had been some time since we'd gone to Carlos' and as I said, I hope it was just a fluke. I cannot understand how this place has 4 stars!!!! We just spent $60 on inedible slop. My daughter's quesadilla was an uncooked tortilla just microwaved with cheese. We came here on a Saturday night after driving from Portland. We were only going to be in Winston for 1 night to visit the Wildlife Safari on Sunday and then head home. I'm so glad we found this restaurant! Service was outstanding! We were seated immediately at a properly spaced out distance from the other diners. Water, chips & salsa came out right away. Our waiter was attentive and answered our questions but did not rush us. Our Cadillac Margaritas were so good. Definitely rival our favorites from home which are delicious (strong and bold). One and done. We had been looking for authentic Mexican food since moving to Roseburg from Arizona, and heard amazing reviews for this place. When we arrived to try it the lot was full, thought this is a good sign. We were seated in a booth with our 2 daughters. When the waitress brought the chips and salsa I asked for the hottest salsa (as we are more accustomed to heat). The regular salsa (if you can even call it that) tasted as though it came from a can. A bit metallic and overpowering tomato flavor no spice and definitely no flavor. The hottest salsa the same it really wasn't salsa. The chips were not homemade. I ordered the enchiladas the girls bean burritos and the husband chile relleno. Everything was not authentic, not even close. I did read a review about the staff and their attentiveness or lack thereof. We would have to agree on that, as we experienced the same treatment. Our sodas came out in margarita glasses full of ice and we wondered why another table had regular sized cups. We had to ask at least 2 different staff members for our check (other than our waiter or waitress because the two serving us came for drink and food order another served us). The food tasted like something us "gringos" can make at home. Coming from a very diverse family and Hispanic heritage and culture, absolutely loving food from south of the US boarder, this place was highly disappointing. The staff here were nice and I had no problem with their service, I'm writing this review about the food I ordered. I am vegetarian and I chose this spot along our drive down to California from Seattle because they had vegan/veggie options. I ordered the zucchini burrito takeout under recommendation from the cashier and I have literally never been so disappointed in a restaurant meal. It can't really be called a traditional burrito - it was simply a tortilla wrapped around cooked (canned?) vegetables. There was no rice in the burrito, or cheese. Literally just a wet tortilla stuffed with subpar veggies. Checking back on the menu, all of their meat burritos comes traditional with beans, rice and cheese but that sentiment was not shared in the vegetarian burrito.. To Carlos Restaurante: for your future vegetarian/vegan customers, I would highly recommend you include a veggie burrito option WITH rice, beans and optional cheese, and fresh vegetables in your menu. I'm sure your meat dishes are wonderful, but no one wants a wet tortilla veggie pocket with no substance (rice) after a long drive. We stopped here while on a road trip across the state. I eat a plant based diet and was so excited to see a full vegan menu! Our waiter came and said that he would get our order in quickly because there was a big group for Dollar Taco Tuesdays which we did not know was happening. 45 to 50 minutes later we had to ask when our food would be coming out. My father has back problems, was just released from the hospital, uses a walker and he cannot sit for too long, especially in a booth, so by the time the food arrived we just wanted to eat and leave. The food was not very good, my dad only ate maybe a bite or two. The vegetables were hard. Extremely, extremely disappointed. Even complained to the waiters, front house girl and they didnt really do anything except offer 10% off our order. We were asked 5 or 6 times if we wanted a to go box. Really? I am not going to say this was my worst dining experience, but I would rather have a meal with Hannibal lector than come back here. Not for anything TOO extreme, but for a lot of little things that all accumulated to an experience that I would expect from a McDonald's, not a "restaurante." When we first arrived it took my family and I to be seated around 10-15 minutes, all while a waitress is walking around staring us in the face but continuing to do other tasks, then when we were finally seated I ordered a beer and did not receive a glass to accompany it. (I did not particularly care but it is still a courtesy to even offer a cold glass) We ordered our food and the waiter was in such a rush (it wasn't even busy) that when the rest of my family ordered a carne asada burrito and I ordered regular carne asada he assumed that I was talking about the burrito as well. On a good note when they brought the food out it was replaced with exactly what I wanted very quickly. Hence the 2 stars instead of 1. About halfway through the meal I asked the waitress (who was extremely rude and standoffish) for another beer. She pointed to another waiter and said "he will have to get it" and then walked off. I understand if somebody is underage and cannot legally serve alcohol, but at least inform somebody who is that somebody would like another drink. My 3 year old daughters water glass was never refilled the whole time we were in there, we never officially got a check delivered to our table so we had to go up to the counter to finally get our check, and on top of all of this the food was extremely bland. There was almost no flavor to anything that was put on our table, even the salsa. How does one make a tasteless salsa you ask? I have no idea, but this place sure does. All in all it was a pretty terrible experience, and I will never come back to this place again, and I recommend that anybody thinking of coming here, should just turn their vehicle around and find another place. read more

Over the years I've heard a mixed reviews about this place, and since I got some $10 gift certificates for Carlos from a local radio station. I figured I would give them a try. I was surprised by how good they were. The chips and salsa were good. The chips were very warm, thick, and crunchy the salsa was pretty good. It's little on the mild side for my taste, but OK for those who can't "eat a flame." I had the 2 enchilada combo meal. I really liked the beans and the spanish rice was more than acceptable. My enchiladas were good. They weren't buried in sauce or cheese like some places. I also ordered some chili fritos (grilled Jalapenos). I found them to be very good not under grilled or overly cooked with sauce or oils. I found it interesting that the tables are stocked with blue agave sweetener, which is great for those needing a gluten free diet or wanting a low glycemic index sweetener. If I could I would give them 3.5 stars. There are other places in the Roseburg area I prefer to Carlos, so I can't give a full 4 or 5 stars. If I did want a change of pace from other Mexican restaurants I like, then I would definitely go back to Carlos. read more

FIVE trips there, and I love it. I ALWAYS start by tasting the beans. Usually they're plain, canned, reheated, nothing. THESE ARE GOOD. The rice is usually not something I care much for, but theirs has great flavor. Salsa is spicy, but doesn't knock you out. Chips are kinda ordinary. Understand, I'm from Modesto, CA, where there is huge competition for great Mexican food. I can't say this is the best I've ever had, but I believe it's as good as it gets in the Umpqua. Chile Relleno made from a real pepper, great Chile Verde and Carnitas. The one negative is that their Taco Salad has too much beans and not enough salad. LETTUCE HOPE they change that! read more

3 of my friends and I came into this restaurant on 08/07/2021 after being at the Dunes for several hours. We were starving! The man at the front was very kind. Our waiter Carlos on the other hand was very rude. First, he did not bring out my first order (I had ordered 2 plates for myself) Carlos brought everyone's food including my first plate but did not bring the 2nd dish I had ordered. After waiting for nearly 30 min for my 2nd dish, I asked him and he responded, "Oh I didn't note down the 2nd dish since there are only 4 of you!" I didn't see a sign that said one single dish per person? so I then asked to get my 2nd dish to go since they had taken so long to prepare it. Food is not good at all. Salsas seemed canned and as if it has been sitting for hours. If you are Hispanic, do not come here. Food is not fresh nor good whatsoever. My boyfriend and I just happened to drive by this place on a road trip up North. It's right on the main drag, so you cannot miss it! If you do, you are skipping out on some good eats. We ordered blackberry margaritas - new menu item, and it's a keeper. We finally decided on the burrito zucchini - it might not sound like much, but it killed basically every other burrito I've tasted. It was smothered in green sauce and topped with sliced avocado, and boy oh boy was it good. And because we like lard-o mexican food, we went with the staple of a cheese enchilada, a la carte. this is an extremely authentic mexican food restaurant! i absolutely love it!! i miss the people that work there, taco tuesday...tacos are 1 dollar each, in bar only...as well as, missing the fantabulous food & cocktails...big selection of margaritas !! they have a large menu, but i have my favs! i will tell you that their chile verde (*lean, tender chunks of pork, simmered in mild green sauce..) it is just 1 dish, that i judge for authenticity & whether the pork chunks are lean, tender, marinated in the mild green sauce, must be tender & absolutely no fat on the meat!! the chile rellenos are stupendous!! i am really missing this place badly !!!! they even have "mole", it is delicious, as well!! I do like Carlos's It is close by my house and I am basically lazy so that is why I go there often. I love the chicken tacos there. They are partially deep fried and then the lettuce cheese and sauce put on. I love that sort of taco where the shell is fried but not like a crunchy taco shell. It is in between crunchy and soft. I also like the shrimp enchiladas. Basically a corn shell with shrimp inside with a green enchiladas sauce on top with I think some white wine in it. Comes with beans and rice, sour cream, and some avacado slices. My favorite dish for sure. I did have one lame experience there. I ordered a to go order for my family. I personally ordered the shrimp enchiladas. The girl taking my order seemed new as I had to help her out with the menu a few times. When I got home, my shrimp enchiladas was actually a shrimp enchilada and nothing else. Normally it is two shrimp enchiladas, rice and beans and the garnishs. I only got one shrimp enchilada and nothing else. So I called them on the phone to let them know. They I think apologized and told me I could come back and get it replaced. No problem I said, I will come in at a later time but not that night. 2 minutes later the girl who took my order calls me back and says she only charged me for one shrimp enchilada. In other words, I got what I paid for. I was a litle ticked that she had the nerve to call me to tell me that. It was like she was saying I got what I paid for. Either way, she screwed it up. Hey things happen but you do what you can to make it right to the customer. I have not been back since so I am not sure what will happen next time. I know for me, I am expecting the shrimp enchiladas for free. Yes, I may have got what I paid for but had I went back I would have had to spend extra time making another trip back to get my food replaced. We will see. If they make it right for me, they will keep me as a customer. If they do not, I will still go there, but it will be less often. read more

A much needed end to a loooong day of moving our daughter into the UofO. Stumbled across this (thanks to Yelp!) as we began our drive back home to SoCal. Was a bit concerned that it wasn't right off the highway but we stuck it out for the 3+ miles. So glad we did as it was "Tip a Hero" night and the local Police Department was the wait-staff fundraising for abused children! It was such a fun atmosphere, the officers were friendly and outgoing, and the food was excellent! I mean, really, really good Mexican food!
