This review is based on my first-time experience with Carmax and selling my car to a company like this. All this while during a pandemic and social distancing procedures. After going to a competing car-buying company for a free inspection and receiving an offer on my car, I decided to try Carmax to compare. I made a same-day appointment online, arrived with a quick greeting, and checked in. While waiting at my car in the lot, the process of appraisal took about an hour. The final offer amount was calculated based on a visual inspection, photos, and details of the car's history. Carmax's offer was surprisingly more significant than the other car-buying company but also fair based on my research on the car's value before getting quotes. After a couple of days deciding, I went back to Carmax to take their offer. I went directly to the service area, where they processed the documents required to finalize the paperwork. The closing process took another hour or so, which included a quick test drive by an employee. After signing a few papers, the nice lady handed me a check of the offered amount. My only issue was the waiting times. And because of the social distancing procedures, it can be a little confusing where to go. Just have to be patient during this time. Overall, I was pleased with my experience at Carmax. The helpful staff was friendly and professional throughout the selling process! I'll consider Carmax again in the future to sell or when I'm in the market for a used car. Note: I attempted to do my final sale process during the weekend, bad idea. The wait time was around 3.5hrs! A year ago I bought my first ever car from this CarMax and I have to say it feels like a big mistake. I absolutely regret buying the car I did from CarMax. When I took the car back just a few weeks later after buying it for alignment problems, the employee in the service department, Roxanne Mayoral, was completely uncaring and had a serious attitude problem. Months later, the car had an issue that CarMax did not want to look at even though I paid hundreds of dollars for the extended CarMax warranty. I was told to go to a Toyota dealership. The Toyota dealership wanted to stick me with an almost one thousand dollar bill for repairs that they claimed were not covered by any warranty. This was the first car I ever purchased on my own and I paid cash for it. I feel completely ripped off and taken advantage of. A car with so few miles and just a couple years old shouldn't have that many problems in less than a year. They are no different than every shady car dealership that the average person fears. First and foremost, don't come here to get your car appraised. They will cheat you out of what your car is really worth. I'll get to that in a minute... My mom passed away a year ago and we need to sell her cars to settle her Estate. Before we even went to Carmax we called to make sure they COULD buy it with the lean on the title. They said yes as long as Toyota gave us the car payoff amount so that they would receive the title. GREAT. Made an appointment, along with arrangements with our Estate lawyer to be there to sign the paperwork. They appraised one car lower bc they said it didn't have the TRD package as originally stated. I'm sorry?? Does Toyota just place TRD stickers on their trucks and not have TRD ?? Do your appraisers NOT know the difference???? Are you kidding me? NO I have the original sale sticker that says the TRD package was added to this base model. That's strike one. Two, then this lady tells us that they can't buy the car because the title is not under the "heirs", that there is a lien . What? We made sure before we came here that you could do this .. AND now you're saying you can't? And then she wants to be a smart ass and outline shit with a highlighter and says .. it's right here .. yes we can read .. thanks . Took our vehicle, which was purchased from Carmax, in for an oil change. I was advised the mechanic, who allegedly had 20 years of experience, could not remove the oil filter after trying every technique and trick he knew of. Since the oil filter could not be removed, they advised the engine oil pan would have to be replaced for the cost of $550. The vehicle was inspected for other service needs and the mechanic advised the car checked out. I declined the offer of an oil pan replacement and took my vehicle to another mechanic, who I watched remove the oil filter in less than 5 minutes. He inspected the vehicle for additional service needs and found the air and air conditioner filters absolutely filthy. Very disappointed with the Carmax Buena Park Service Department. read more

Other than appt was very late- had to wait 50 min after our appt time came and went (we were on time, they were running behind) but everything else went well and was very easy. Carmax made me an offer on my car, when I took it there for inspection it was exactly how I described it. While we were there we dealt with a fool named Duy. He gave me some weak sauce excuse that it would take 15 days to snail mail a check to pay off the balance. Since the quote they gave me would expire before the payment could reach the bank, they couldn't guarantee the quote. I didn't realize that Carmax was stuck in the 90's. What's the point of getting a 10 day payoff from the bank if they can't get the payment there within 10 days. read more

Selling car-decently done but could be more efficient. Total time about 5 to 6 hrs-many employees standing around socializing. If have accident or altercation on Carmax's grounds between customers-carmax is unresponsive, turns blind eye, even if situation is overheated and may put into danger clients health or well-being. Understandable why they don't involve themselves but they should at least make an effort to deescalate without getting involved in the argument. read more

He seem fine but you could tell right away that he was being homophonic and not trying to help at all. They are the worst!, again I had to DRIVE Myself to their facility to actually speak to someone. Got the run around again!!. So I decided I would call and complain to their corporate office. Just a few months ago we went to Carmax with a vehicle in mind along with our budget. We were greeted by the front desk & then Luis (who has been working with Carmax for 10+ yrs) assisted us. He was very helpful and allowed us to take our time. We test drove a vehicle which ended up to be a heavy possible "yes". We ran into a situation where the info that was left in the vehicle ended up to be for another car, so the price was different. We spoke to Art, a manager there at Carmax explaining the situation and we were told that it was a human error & that the price was not negotiable, therefore the price stated on the information sheet would not apply to the car that we were heavily considering. Now given the circumstances, the answer provided to us was not sufficient at all & therefore we wanted to further the discussion to corporate. We explained to Art that this was an " exceptional situation" & that we were long time returning costumers and had have family/friends that were referred by us as well, so we really needed him to see what options we had and how he could assist us so that it would not affect our future relationship with Carmax. After that conversation with Art about our history with Carmax over the years, he felt more compelled to help & offered that he would look into it and make calls to corporate to go up to bat for us. We provided our info & Art stated he would give us a call with the outcome. The reason this is a five star is because it is really important to see how the customer & seller work together. I am a buyer car dealer from Carmax. Every time I go to purchase cars here there is no one at the gate to release me to pick up my vehicle. This is true to all Carmax centers except for Temecula. I've seen 10 employees and they all say that they're going to call someone but no one ever shows up. Carmax takes you through the experience that everything is easy but to get a vehicle out the door is stupid. I haven't bought a car from Carmax, but I have now sold 2 cars here! I would suggest making an appointment, and if possible go early on the weekdays to avoid the crowds. If it gets crowded, even if you have an appointment, you may be waiting around a pretty long time. The workers here are all pretty friendly and professional, and they try to be as efficient as possible. If you're there to sell your car, they will thoroughly inspect your car and offer you a deal. The nice (or not so nice) part of it is that there is no negotiation. What they offer is their final price, and they tell you that the offer expires in 7 days, after which you have to get a new appraisal. The offer would likely be the same or lower at that point. The offer they give you is reasonable. It's not the best deal of course, but it is pretty convenient and and definitely saves you time from having to sell the car on your own. If you're looking to sell, consider CarMax! They'll give you a free appraisal of your car, and you can either take it or leave it. read more

Warning! Bad Customer Service!! I wanted to sell my car after buying a new car and made an appointment at this location at 4:30 pm. I arrived early around 3:45pm and went to the front desk to check in. The employee at the counter confirmed my appointment and told me I was checked in and that I would receive a phone call when they were ready for me. I went to the waiting room and waited and waited. Finally I went to the desk at 5:00pm to ask how much longer only to find that I had never actually been checked in, despite what I had been told. There was a whole process, 2 forms and giving them the car key to actually be checked in. Had I not gone to the desk to check I would have been waiting indefinitely for a phone call that never would have come. Absolutely terrible customer service.
