Made an appointment for an appraisal to sell my car. I was clear and upfront that I am not buying a new car, but was told over the phone and read on the website that they are still happy to appraise and make an offer that would be good for 7 days. I showed up to my appointment and the person I met with asked me once again if I was looking to trade-in for a new car... when I said no, he said he could save me some time and took me over to a computer. He pulled up Kelly Blue Book... I told him I had already looked at the KBB value but he insisted that I had not done it correctly and he would show me the way it needed to be done. He then proceeded to select every option that would devalue the car as much as possible and showed me the range that my appraisal would come back at and asked if I would accept the worst possible offer for my car. Obviously, the answer is no when private sellers are selling my exact make and model with similar mileage for 3X on average the range he showed me. If it was 2X, I probably would've proceeded. I thought the whole point of an appraisal was that they actually inspect your car, make evaluations, enter into a computer system, and determine a value. If all I needed to do was enter my info into KBB online to know what CarMax would offer, why don't they just link to KBB before they schedule an appointment? Aren't they just wasting everyone's time? Here's what I think actually happened: I think when he learned I wasn't a buyer and he would not be making a commission, he was too lazy to go through an actual appraisal for the quoted 30 to 40 minutes. Instead, he put in the least amount of work possible by taking me to a public facing consumer website that literally anyone who owns a car already knows how to use, and discouraged me from even getting an appraisal. CarMax lost by business FOREVER. I figured part of the business was them making money on buying and re-selling cars, but I guess not. read more

I was car shopping a few months ago and the first place I visited was my nieghborhood Carmax. The day of my first visit I talked to a great car salesman "Ron", he ran my credit and told me what I can afford. I was a first time buyer so he told me what was best on my budget. I even offered a greater down payment and he explained that wasnt necessary as it was not going to make a significant difference on my monthly payment. Everything turned out great, I picked the car I wanted, with a great monthly payment. However since I was a first time buyer they wanted proof of income that I could not provide due to the fact that my job didnt open on weekends. So I left empty handed. )-: A week later I showed up again with my proof of income and down payment ready to pick up my car. Ron wasn't there so I was helped by another sales person. I was very excited, I was greeted by the manager and all he was very friendly (then). We started the process again and the car sales person took my proof of income to the manager twice and her screen would lock when we tried to make the purchase. Finally the dealer manager came to our cubicle and he started yelling at me asking me if I had manufacture my own proof of income. I said no I had gotten it from payroll at my job and he keep on yelling at me asking me " are you trying to commit fraud" i said "no why would I" *remind you this is an old man who had greeted me earlier* and then he throw the paper at me and told me he did not want my business because he knew I was a lier and a was trying to do fraud. I did not get his name but he is the old man that stands in the door way greeting people. I was very shocked and embarrassed, never have I felt soo bad for something I had no intention in doing. I do not recommend this place to anyone.. they are very fake and will change their attitudes based on what they believe. I texted Ron to tell him about the situation and he never replied back, I just felt victimized and very dissapointed honestly I felt like crying. My husband was about to go off on him but I told him to save his words that manager had already made a scene. However, that same morning I visited the dealer next door and got approved with the same proof of income on a very nice car. Low mileage, great monthly payments and soo far I feel like it was fate, I've never been soo happy with a purchase. read more

I was downright appalled at the offer I received from CarMax. After a long conversation with the gentleman helping me, he explained that the usual margin between what they purchase a vehicle for is maybe a few thousand dollars. After doing my research, CarMax is selling my vehicle in a lower model, with higher miles for $12k-$13k. CarMax offered me $5,500 for my vehicle. That is an OVER 50% mark-up, and $1,500 LESS than what a dealer had offered me. CarMax values themselves on transparency and no games. As a potential client that walked out the door after an hour of wasted time, I don't see those values translating to the customer experience. read more

I wish I could give zero stars! I bought a 2006 BMW 530i in July. I have had to take my car in for service every month since for the same issue which was tire pressure. I was told my tires were checked thoroughly and tested. However, my tires ended up shredding while I was driving. Clearly the inspection was never done or I should have been notified of the bad tires. I was reimbursed for my tires. This morning I go to start my car and nothing happens. I had a 13 year old Toyota that never gave me problems but in the last 6 months I have had more issues with this car than it is even worth. I want out of this car! I have called and left messages for sales managers but my calls go unreturned. Customer service does not exist at Carmax LAX. I am so upset that I am consistently inconvenienced because of this vehicle. read more

I expected a low ball offer, which was less than half of what I eventually got privately. But sabotage? They had their 1/2 hour inspection, and when I got home, it started to drip oil for the first time ever. A friend discovered that the oil pan cap has been installed very loosely, causing it to drip. It's clearly not a case of 'forgetting to tighten it', rather an attempt to make me think it was worth less, and give up trying to sell it elsewhere. SABOTAGE! It's illegal. I should have reported them, but the evidence was sold off. The leak almost cost me that sale too. read more

Witch sounded crazy but agreed and had to literally dispute with the service parts Lady's to get a loaner car since the car was nearly bought less then a month ago! I bought a 2011 BMW from CarMax in Escondido, CA just a few months ago and had a wonderful experience so I am very disappointed that I have to write this negative review. The dealer in Escondido, Riverside, Orange County all didn't have the vehicle we wanted so we were forced to go further north to another Carmax. Goes to show how satisfied we were with Carmax before this experience unfolded. Went into the CarMax near LAX last Sunday (4/26/15) after driving 2+ hours from San Diego to look at a 2010 Ford Flex. We already had our financing in place and everything was ready to go. I ended up with a salesman whom had no idea what the hell he was doing. We started the sell around 3:30pm. Every time we would ask him a question, he would have to leave to go find out the answer and would be gone for 15-20 mins each time. By 4:30pm we had only gotten 2 questions answered. By 5:00pm we still have not gotten all our questions answered and my bank is USAA which is on the east coast so being it was Sunday, and it was after 8:00pm eastern time, the bank had closed. Had the salesman not have had to leave for 20mins after every question, we could have had the deal done before the bank closed. We finally got upset and went to the business office where the salesman kept running off too. The rude lady working there told us that we needed to call USAA to verify something they were unable too(because the bank closed). I told the lady she already has the bank check, and my down payment, can't we finish the deal today and they could work on the logistics tomorrow (Monday). She said with a very rude voice, "well you ain't taking the car". I told her if we couldn't finish up the deal now, we were going to walk and go elsewhere. She replied again in the very rude voice from earlier, "Ok"! I couldn't believe they were going to let me walk out the door and let a $30,000 sale go with it, but they did. Their loss is another dealers gain. I'm very sad to say, I will not be going back to CarMax and its very upsetting because the dealer in Escondido, CA and the salesman made it such a pleasant experience for us. After receiving an appraisal from a different CarMax location, I sold my car to the Inglewood location. Although in the end, the sale was completed, the process was annoying and slow. They don't take appointments so I arrived promptly at 10 a.m. when they opened. The woman at the business office took my car keys, registration, driver's license and asked me to take a seat. I sat in the waiting area for nearly 45 minutes before someone finally called me. I'm glad it worked out but it shouldn't have taken so long. read more

Horrible customer service in the service department. I left message for 2 weeks to get a service appointment, when I finally did reach someone they didn't have any appointments open for 3 weeks. They have had my car for 3 days for an obvious warranty issue and they are still trying to figure it out. Every time I call for an up date they don't answer. Meanwhile I have no car and no estimate on when they will be done. When I finally did speak to someone they had an attitude and they are trying to charge me extra. I will not be returning. read more

I took my car here to sell because I heard CarMax gives you a reasonable quote, and I felt too lazy to sell the car privately. Not sure what happened, but the quote they gave me was $5.5K. The KBB private party value of my car was $6.5K for "fair" condition and $7K for "good" condition. I was actually considering selling it for $6.5K even though I knew my car was, at minimum, in "good" condition. I ended up listing it on craigslist the next evening for $7K, and selling it the day after for $8K which is the KBB value at "excellent" condition. I only showed the car to the first three people because I was lazy, and definitely could have got a little more than $8K if I really tried. CarMax's greed worked to my benefit, and I got $1.5K more than the $6.5K I was willing to sell to them for. Overall, I got 46% more money than the $5.5K CarMax was offering, and all I had to do was list my car for 24 hours on Craigslist and let three people test drive it. read more

She got me orders to fix all three and when I hadn't heard from service after six weeks, she got them to set up an appointment. When I showed up they were missing the two more expensive orders. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO CAR MAX to sell it. At least, not this one. I brought my Audi in here for them because I was hoping to get a fair offer. The guy told me that their mechanic would look at it right away and they'd have an offer for me in 30 mins. These jerks made me wait two hours, not giving me any info on why it was taking so long. I was worried there was something wrong with the car or they had wrecked it on the test drive. So after waiting two hours without any updates, the guy said the car looked great, no problems, and handed me an offer for 50% of the blue book value and $2500 less than I would have gotten on a trade in. What a joke!!! I told him I wasn't an idiot and this was an insulting offer and a waste of time. If it had taken 30 minutes, it wouldn't have been as big a deal, but WHAT A RIPOFF!! know your car's value before you take it in there. read more

I'm so annoyed with this place. I went in looking for a vehicle of course. I told the sales lady before we started that I will be starting a new job this upcoming Monday. She says to me, oh it's ok we can use your previous employment because we need proof for 3 months of income. I specifically said, ok but I worked there from April 2018 - December 2018. I told her my last day was December 13 which was mid pay week. She said that's ok. So we went through the ENTIRE process, picked out the vehicle and everything. I purchased insurance like she stated and everything. In the end she comes back and says, I'm sorry we need a check stub no older than 30 days. Do you know how unprofessional that was. She had the "sold" tickets out already, I purchased insurance and the insurance had already faxed over the binder. I was approved just for her to say no due to not having a check stub. I was so upset and to top it off the supervisor says, I'll have to see what I can do so it won't happen to future customers. That's fine but what about it happening to me right now. I am so disappointed and annoyed and my credit was ran for no reason. HORRIBLE!!!! read more

I'm surprised by some of the reviews on here regarding customer service. I guess I got lucky. I worked with Luz to purchase a car. The car I wanted needed to be transferred from another location but because of the wildfires it was taking longer than expected. Luz kept me posted on the progress every step of the way and seemed genuinely excited to help me through the process. When my car arrived and I was able to purchase, Luz and Jessica were so kind and helpful. The whole process took about an hour and was absolutely painless. I'm so happy with my purchase and the service I received. I would recommend Carmax to anyone and will absolutely be back for future purchases. read more

I have previously bought a car in the past (at the LAX location) and then it ended up having multiple problems and I brought it into the LAX service center and I dropped it off for them to fix the problems and it ended up staying there for my whole 30 day warranty where "Andrew" was in contact with me telling me "parts were on there way" and "I would have my car back soon" and "service is working on the problems and we are having outside sources to check on it as well" and other this and that when I the end I went to go pick it up there was absolutely nothing done to my car (receipt as proof!!!) and he was lying to me the whole time he kept my car!!! I was pretty speechless at the time looking at the service receipt. To ask if my whole 30day-warranty was gone I contacted the service department and they gave me some bs response for that and for "Andrew" lying to me and then I contacted the CEO about the problem and about my 30-day warranty and I never received a response. 2015- I recently I traded in the car that I bought from here because it was having clutch problems (after owning it for less than a year) and of course MaxCare does not provide service for that! I went to the South Bay Carmax to trade that car in. I love the car that I got and there have been no problems so knock on wood nothing happens to it. But while this time my experience with buying a car recently was good, it cannot erase the past. My family has bought about 5 cars from Carmax and honestly I cannot recommend Carmax in general to anyone, we won't be going to Carmax to buy anymore future cars. read more

We have now taken two cars to CarMax LaCienega to sell, NEVER AGAIN ! Both cars were appraised with "body work done on rear passenger panel." The "offer" was $2500 low because of the trumped up "damage" This 2011 X3 BMW with 17,60mi was a custom order delivered from the factory and never had any paint or body work. This review is more about the Carmax concept and message versus this particular store. They promote themselves as a place to get a fair deal on trade ins (higher side of whole sale or trade in value) and a better used vehicle value. The problem with this is I have personally had two vehicles appraised for not even close high whole sale and if you really look over the cars they sell, they are usually dirty. I have been to the Inglewood, Torrance and Costa Mesa location and found that they really have no idea the history of the vehicles and again not clean. Don't promote yourself as the better option and then not live up to that promotion. That's like McDonald's saying they are the best diet option and then you eat there and gain weight. You are always better off selling your car yourself. That in itself is a no brainer but you can also find better cars by looking and asking questions then you can from Carmax. Just like the Saturn no haggle option years ago this place is a bad option. read more

I was trying to sell my leased car here on a Friday and when we got there one of the salesman helped us with evaluating my car and he told me that in order to sell the car we needed to come Monday - Friday before 2 pm because east coast banks close at 5 pm or what not. So we came back a few days later before 2 pm and somehow the bank was already closed.... and couldn't sell my car, at this point i can't take days off anymore for a vehicle I'm trying to sell and so they did accommodate and tell me that it's ok to just come the next day in the evening to turn in the car because the paperwork should be done by the time I drop off my car and GUESS WHAT! I get a call and Apparently now the bank didnt send a certain paper work on time and the person has the dignity to tell me that NOW I have to start all over from re-evaluating my vehicle... like are they kidding me? I understand that with COVID 19 going on, people are working hard and doing their best to fulfill their role. However I was very displease and dissatisfied with the way that Carmax handled my recent visit. I simply went to browse for cars and get a simple quote for my trade in value. They told me that there would be a wait time of about 45 minutes to an hour, which doesn't bother me. I had a book, my phone, I was good. After about an hour passes I checked to see how much longer the wait might be, I was told by an employee, I think his name was Christian, that my wait would be about another 20-30 minutes. Ok. Cool. Still no problem. I knew they had COVID rules to follow plus there were quite a few people there. However, after 2 hours and a half I got a bit fed up. I asked the employee if I could reschedule my appointment and he told me that I would either have to make a phone call or do it online, which I think is redundant because he had a computer sitting right there and front desk people should be able to book appointments in addition to being able to search for peoples names and everything in the likeness. I told him that I would continue to wait but I'm gonna try to switch my appointment dates over the phone. As I went through the phones menu and procedures I ended up 2 hours on hold and another 4 hours waiting in person just to be seen for what should have been a simple visit. Again, I understand that businesses have to maintain COVID ruling and must stay socially distanced, however this does not justify having poor and inefficient customer service. I feel that no other person should go through this and I hope in the future the problems with Carmax can be resolved. read more

They drew up new paperwork saying it was the same car, which I found out later it was not. Bait and switch. The car engine blew after 11k driving miles. So do you give them the okay? After 3 days De'Vaughn calls Ken. 4 times. Ken calls back right before closing hours. Ken says that's not the case. Michael never called us and told us you gave the okay so your car still hasn't been looked at and it will cost you $250 to start the process. De'Vaughn attempts to get Michael on a three way call after asking Ken to stay on the line Ken agrees De'Vaughn makes three way call Ken hangs up Michael says he DID tell Ken to do the diagnostic Ken says okay And if the problem were the SAME CM LAX/Inglewood would cover it while Torrance did the repair Three weeks, De'Vaughn calls Ken everyday. De'Vaughn was told Ken would call him back after leaving messages every single day. Never received a phone call. De'Vaughn calls Torrance to speak to Ken. Told his case is handed to Roger. Not given title of employment. Roger says CM Torrance can't start anything until given the "okay" to start diagnostic De'Vaughn replies with "I said yes a week ago. You still haven't started. May I have a rental?" Roger says "no we can't give a rental until we do the diagnostic and figure out what's wrong with the car. Do we have your permission? Roger says if it's the same issue, Inglewood will cover it. If not, there is a $250 deductible." De'Vaughn says "yes". Again. Roger requests two days for the process. 2 days later, De'Vaughn calls Roger. Roger says they can't find the issue. De'Vaughn requests a rental again. Roger says no. We've done the diagnostic but we cannot give you a rental until we find out how long it will take to fix and what the problem is. De'Vaughn says ok. Roger says give me a couple of days and we should have it all figured out for you. De'Vaughn says ok. Two days later De'Vaughn calls roger. Roger says they're not finished with the diagnostic but they think it's something electrical. De'Vaughn requests a rental. Roger says let me call your insurance and see if they will cover a car while we figure out what is wrong with yours. De'Vaughn agrees. De'Vaughn calls roger the next day. He doesn't answer. De'Vaughn leaves a message for Roger with a female employee who agrees to give the message to Roger. De'Vaughn goes to Torrance CM with friend, Jacoby Duke. Asks Roger about diagnostic. Roger says there is an electrical problem that they can't fix at their location, so the car is being sent to another location today to be looked at. Roger and De'Vaughn speak about deductible. Roger informs De'Vaughn that Ken and Michaels information was invalid. Roger tells De'Vaughn to come back the next day to pick up the rental one roger gets ahold of De'Vaughn's insurance. Next day De'Vaughn goes to CM Torrance with Jasmine. Speaks to Roger. Hasn't spoken to insurance. Roger says to give him 15 minutes. Roger directs De'Vaughn to break room. De'Vaughn waits 45 min. De'Vaughn goes back to Roger to find out what's going on. Roger says he's waiting on insurance to respond. Give us 20 minutes and you'll be set. No apology for time spent waiting without communication. 35 minutes pass. No word. Goes back to Roger. Roger says they just got back to him. Proceeds to get De'Vaughn's rental keys. De'Vaughn receives keys. Roger gets another attendant to walk De'Vaughn to car. De'Vaughn's told he has the rental until car is fixed. Receives 2014 silver Honda Accord De'Vaughn notices his car is still at Torrance in the same spot after being told it had been taken to separate repair shop De'Vaughn is in rental Roger calls De'Vaughn the next day and requests more time to find the problem. This is not the way car buying should be. We reserved a car this past Friday to pick up today on Monday. We get here for our 12pm appointment and and aren't seen until 12:20 and told 5 more minutes which ended up being another 25 min. We were told the car we reserved wasn't ready and they were detailing it. We met with an appraisal consultant and by this point it was 1:30 and still no car. We ended up running a couple errands until the car was ready and got back around 2:30. We gave them an hour. And to our surprise.. it STILL WASNT READY and waited another 20. This whole time to we see groups of reps standing around and talking. Finally we see the car and trying to close the deal in their dingy cubicles. That took about a little over an hour to do. And it wasn't even closing the deal.. it was just trying to see what our monthly payments could be. It is now 6pm and my husband and I are still here waiting for the slow business center to get our paper work together. I can't even tell you how many times we've heard "you're next in line, or just five more minutes ". We loved the car we are purchasing but the hustle that these sales rep lack is unacceptable and extremely frustrating. Fire all these employees standing around, and keep the ones who really do their job and appreciate it and pay them more. read more

i had a car transferred from a different carmax facility to lax and they went to the trouble of trucking it in for an almost certain sale. they also set and confirmed an appointment for me to come in to purchase. i checked in at the lax facility and waited ONE HOUR with no one acknowledging my presence so i left. they disrespected my time and their own effort. this experience was EXTREMELY disappointing. why even bother making an appointment that you cannot honor? read more

Years ago I sold my Honda Odyssey to CarMax at a great price. It was such an easy experience that I came back a few years later and sold my Lexus 400h at a decent price. This time around I needed to purchase a car as I was at the end of a lease (just for the record...never never never leasing a car again) and was looking to buy an electric car. Oscar helped me out and was so easy to work with. When I needed to continue shopping and came back the next day Oscar set me up with Tim who was great. I purchased a Leaf and a few days in realized that it was too small for comfort. From the comfort of my home I began shopping for larger electric cars throughout southern California...via CarMax, of course. Meanwhile, Tim was at CarMax researching possible matches for me as well. I texted him when I found the car I wanted at the price I wanted and with the mileage and features I wanted as well. Tim ordered it and it was on the lot and ready for me to drive home by the end of the week. I highly recommend working with CarMax for your car purchasing and/or selling needs. They pride themselves on being hassle free and they have consistently proven themselves to be just that! read more

So I have driven my car for three years 25k miles, now up to 70k total. The initial problem I had was that the head gasket needed to be replaced. It's been an issue for three years and took an outside mechanic to figure out. Oh and another small thing, I have also has to replace the transmission. Oh then the car died again and I had to replace the transmission cable. Oh and then the car died again and they said it's the battery and charged me $280 to replace it. Oh and now it is dying again. So it wasn't the battery. This car is a piece of crap. It is clear to me that it was so when they sold it to me. I brought it to them and they ignored me. Head gasket, transmission, electrical problems, I've been back to Carmax 7-8 times at least in 2016 alone and this car has 70,000 miles on it. read more

Had to wait two hours to have our car checked-out, in order sell to them. They totally low balled us saying the frame was worked on. We are the first and only owners, never been in an accident. When asked to show us what they saw to indicate this, they pointed to a tiny spot of rust no bigger than a speck and called it a weld. Either he was unqualified to inspect cars or ordered to make stuff up. Avoid this place. They offered us 3k, we sold it to another dealership for around 6k. Time wasting cheap skates. read more

This location has the WORST CAR REPAIR CENTER EVER!!!!!! very unproffesional , the first time I took my car to replace a headlight only took them 8 hrs for them to tell me it was not cover under warranty . The second time my car was in for a break pad and oil change and my car was in the shop for 6 days and counting still . Nobody was calling me to update me . I had to give them a call to see what was going on . I had to speak to the Manager which he helped after I keept calling them over and over , but even after speaking to him I still have no word about the status on my car .WTF!!! carmax this is a big company not any little car shop you find in any street corner !!! if you are thinking about taking your car directly to Carmax beause you think by purchasing your car they will do a better service , think again you are better off with that cousin that claims to be a mechanic ! read more
